This chemistry is it! It's like a kid and his cool uncle that share the same passion. Grat back and forth and you can feel the love they have for these sounds
I was working at MAHLE when they started putting TDI into upperclass and didnt want it to sound like tractors. No active sound but frequency filtering, resonance, dampening... BMW Z4 and VW gti already had sound modules from MAHLE i think... The Ford Focus RS had a different style membrane one.. We did a setup for an Audi A3 ranging from two stroke chainsaw to nasty racing engine. Biggest bonus: you get a nice motor sound and feedback, while not annoying every living beeing around. Volume and noise doesnt equal sound. If your engine needs that to get down your road at walking speed its broken..
The samples they used here for the 787B were awful, totally did not do it justice. There is a drive by YT vid with over 4mill views and it sounds better than the Zonda IMO.
The British V12s have a unique sound that I like a lot. Another British car maker, TVR, make great sounding engines. All the way from their I6 to their V12, all their engines sound like they want to kill you. They have such a raw sound.
Ford also made a V4... though the brand most known for using it is not Ford, but Saab x) but yeah, V4's got a distinct sound. but when it comes to italians... to bad they didn't add in a Busso based Alfa in this clip... good holley molley a tuned Busso V6 sounds good.
He just perfectly described the 4AGE and it's reliability, power and "protagonist" thing! And he didn't even know Initial D or Keiichi or AE86 racing heritage. Damn, this man is terrifying.
Great video! You made one thing about the RS3 wrong thow. The rev fotage was an RS3 but the flyby was an Audi S3 with a 4 cylinder. The Rs3 sounds amazings on flyby💥
I think this is one of my favorite videos you've done so far. I could watch Sandro and Angelina all day, but this scratches a different kind of itch I didn't know I had.
There are just so many things going on within LFA's noise, it's so refined, yet so distinctively organic, it also doesn't shatter your ear buds or tear up your brain like a lot of high-pitch engines, it's literally an instrument, and is being masterfully played by something alive.
the LFA and Zonda R really are some of the best sounding cars in the world. the zonda r sounds so good i thought it was an F1 car, and i know how beautiful the zonda r sounds. the LFA is just majestic, not a car sounds expert but just the sheer whine of that v10 is just so beautiful. it raced for first place in terms of sound and it is up there!
We all know the LFA is the best, but hearing it back to back with all of the other cars shows just how clear and beautiful the sounds it makes really are
I saw the LFA for the first time at the 2011 Nürburgring 24H in it's GT3 Version ran by Gazoo Racing. Dude...those two cars where sounding even more mental than the street Version. That Engine is a Marvel of Engineering and I am in love with it ever since. Unfortunately they had to muffle it the year after because it was too loud lol.
The secret of the Pagani isn't just in the V12 (although it always helps), it's the equal length headers, who ensure that all equally spaced pulses keep being equally pulsed when they exit out of the exhaust pipes. Which makes for an ever smooth note, and keeps the pitch very high up. Also helps with power! But props to the engineers, the Pagani geniuses being given one of the best canvas to work on (AMG is nearly systematically known for the amazing sound of their engines), and the result is definitely at the level of our expectations.
Yup it's all in the headers on the m120 V12 , stock headers are terrible, zonda used equal length 3-2-1 headers then merged the banks at the tips. I am using the mercedes m120 (OG zonda engine) for my V12 build 😎
That RS3 segment most certainly didnt have a 5 cylinder engine at the guessing stage. 5 pots have a very distinctive sound and that wasn't it. It might have been an exhaust note from a GTI or S3, but not RS3.
You can actually see around 10:35 that the flyby was definitely from an S3 The idle WAS an RS3, which is part of why the idle sounded good and deep while the flyby felt more tinny and lackluster.
I know this is late but as a car audio guy, not just the loud boom boom but sound quality car audio guy; you tend think about more then just what's appeasing to the ear. Harmonics, balance of frequencies, tone depths. Likes there's so much to sound that tbqh, normal car guys don't get but that's the angle this guy is taking. Just a perspective to point out, that is all
The first sound they played was absolutely and without question a Honda 4-cyl engine. I guessed the B18C from the Integra type R, but thought it might also have been the F20C from the AP1 S2000. I knew the GT350 the moment it started. The sound is very identifiable, even though the driver wasn’t taking it up to 8200RPM. I would pause and write my guesses down as they went along, and was appalled that they tried to claim both clips came from the GT350. Somebody screwed up their game!!
The LFA, Ferrari F40, Mazda 787B and Porsche GT3s are some of the best sounding cars imo. But the RS3 has a great sounding engine, most of why I wanted to buy one. That clip was such a bad example, there are way better clips out there for that 2.5L 5 cylinder. Also, the Audi Sport Quattro has a similar engine and sounds AMAZING. Yamaha also harmonically tuned everything in the LFA but they specifically tuned the exhaust to make it sound good, unlike the 4AGE and JZ engines, where they designed the heads. And how can you say the 787B is not a good race car? It was a fuckin BOSS, the engineers stripped the engine down after the race and said it could've done ANOTHER 24 hours, as the wear was so minimal! Respect -100 for James Pumphrey 😂

Mr Mangini needs to listen to that clip of the Ferrari F40 LM driven by Jacques Lafitte. It's insane.
I always loved the 787, Pagani and the LFA. My favorite sounds out of motors ever. I will always appreciate Ferrari, Lamborghini and any and all V8’s, and nicely tuned 6 cylinder exhaust tones though.
The fact that you didn't have: - the Busso V6, - the F130 V12 (Ferrari F50) - the F140 V12 (Ferrari F12berlinetta) - Lamborghini's 6.5 V12 - Dodge's 6.2 supercharged V8 (Hellcat, Demon) ... makes me severely question the amount of thought put into this video. At least you got the LFA's V10 & the F136 in here.
I would definitely rank the 787B higher. And you don't give it enough credit as a race car. True, it did run at a lighter weight than the other cars in group C at LeMans that year, but it was also the most reliable car there that year, and the most fuel efficient. Two things that you wouldn't normally associate with a rotary, unless you truly know rotaries that is. I think if you heard these cars in person, you would find it much more dramatic than in the audio clips you provided.
Awesome game to play! It's amazing how our sight can play a role in how "good" a sound is! This guy is like my hero as music nerd, I would love the ability to switch off outside 'interference' and hear what he hears

Mark is the coolest! An absolute legend in the filmmaking world. Good get!
The 787B is my favourite sound from a car by far. I love how rotaries sound, especially racing ones. Also really enjoy the Zonda R noise
Didn't know the zonda r had a clk gtr engine, what a throwback! The clk gtr is one of those forgotten legends today unfortunately
The samples they used here for the 787B were awful, totally did not do it justice. There is a drive by YT vid with over 4mill views and it sounds better than the Zonda IMO.
Lancia Fulvia has an interesting soundtrack with it's unique V4. The V12 from an Aston Martin is quite mesmerizing as well.
Strongly agree.
The British V12s have a unique sound that I like a lot.
Another British car maker, TVR, make great sounding engines. All the way from their I6 to their V12, all their engines sound like they want to kill you. They have such a raw sound.
Yup fulvia is such a good car
Ford also made a V4... though the brand most known for using it is not Ford, but Saab x)
but yeah, V4's got a distinct sound.
but when it comes to italians... to bad they didn't add in a Busso based Alfa in this clip... good holley molley a tuned Busso V6 sounds good.
The V8 in an Alfa Romeo Montreal is also quite nice.
My personal list for street cars only!
1st : GMA T.50
2nd: LFA
3th: Ferrari 812 novitec
4th: Zonda R
When I heard the Pagani I recognized it immediately, man the sounds they got out of the Zonda line were incredible.
I know right. For me it was the way that the engine turned on was an immediate sign
7.3L N/A AMG derived V12, right?
Incredible.

Definitely 😍 Mercedes v12 💪 I am building my dream V12 supercar with the m120😎
He just perfectly described the 4AGE and it's reliability, power and "protagonist" thing! And he didn't even know Initial D or Keiichi or AE86 racing heritage. Damn, this man is terrifying.
And perfectly describes the unreliability of an audi.

The LFA is what we all thought cars sounded like when we were 5 and what we thought our first car sounded like in high school
Great video! You made one thing about the RS3 wrong thow. The rev fotage was an RS3 but the flyby was an Audi S3 with a 4 cylinder. The Rs3 sounds amazings on flyby💥
Yeah that makes sense. I was baffled bc I had a jetta with an 07k and a borla and it sounded way better in the flyby than that.
I believe they went for the worst RS3 sound clip available on youtube. That engine sounds so much better than that.

Yeah defo cause in my head i thought it sounded like the 4 banger VAG engine
This is one of my favourite Donut videos. Being an audiophile and a car guy at the same time is such a bless. Love u guys. Greetings from Romania
I really can't imagine driving a car, no matter how fast, without the sound. It just makes it so good!!
I am V10 and I-5 man, but v12 always has that special something. New Murray T50 has amazing tunezzz.
I think this is one of my favorite videos you've done so far. I could watch Sandro and Angelina all day, but this scratches a different kind of itch I didn't know I had.
It’s great to see this guy is back. Absolutely banger video idea, and I love to see he earned another Oscar for Dune
Dune is a boring movie.
The sound you guys used for the 787b didn’t give justice to it.
Love Mark being on the show!!
Some 1998-2010 Audi Quattro engines make very pretty sounds.
I didn't even recognize the RS3 in the clip because it is all pops and bangs and no real 5 cylinder sound anymore
@@Alexx120493that’s what I’m saying. They should’ve used a Volvo
@@Alexx120493 I didn't recognize the RS3 as an owner. Sounds nothing like what I'm driving :(
They should troll next one with hayabusa turbo
@@jkliao6486the sound from the inside is often different, and a lot of brands pump engine noises into the interior through the speakers
There are just so many things going on within LFA's noise, it's so refined, yet so distinctively organic, it also doesn't shatter your ear buds or tear up your brain like a lot of high-pitch engines, it's literally an instrument, and is being masterfully played by something alive.
@apophisstr6719 nice profile picture! where's it from?
Im sorry lost one. Carrerra GT did it first, and better.
I hope I can guide you to the right path
the LFA and Zonda R really are some of the best sounding cars in the world. the zonda r sounds so good i thought it was an F1 car, and i know how beautiful the zonda r sounds. the LFA is just majestic, not a car sounds expert but just the sheer whine of that v10 is just so beautiful. it raced for first place in terms of sound and it is up there!
Bring this guy back. So cool. Really shows another level of engineering
That LFA sound clip was way better recorded than some of the others though
@@PalpatinesPlumber true, some of those recordings were trash
That Pagani is #1 for me 😊
LFA is not the Best Sounding Buddy Sorry.. It's Sounds good, but I think it's Overrated...ever heard a Lamborghini v12 or Ferrari V12 😅
Surprised you didn't mention the Delta S4's twincharged engine.
It's incredible in sound, very unique.
It’s also got 8 exhausts with 4 cylinders!
Called the LFA straight away. I knew the Ferrari brand, but that Lexus is so unique that it stands out beyond the others. Incredible engineering!
Best V6: 2020 Ford GT
Best V8: Hennessey Venom F5
Best V10: Lexus LFA
Best V12: Pagani Huayra R
That RS3 segment most certainly didnt have a 5 cylinder engine at the guessing stage. 5 pots have a very distinctive sound and that wasn't it. It might have been an exhaust note from a GTI or S3, but not RS3.
It's definitely the sound of a 5 cylinder ... but with stock exhaust, soft limiter to 3000rpm and other limitations ... a very bad sample video !
The Audi RS3 soundtrack was not a RS3. It was definitely a 4 cylinder which means the sound was from a S3. 5 cylinders sound like mini V10's
You can actually see around 10:35 that the flyby was definitely from an S3
The idle WAS an RS3, which is part of why the idle sounded good and deep while the flyby felt more tinny and lackluster.
sounds 4 cylinder when he goes wot
No kidding. Definitely was a poor representation of 5 pots. Should have been a tuned up rs3 or TTRS (maybe the twr 850 racecar)
I could listen to Mark talk about sound for hours and hours. Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Fury Road, Fifth Element, some of the best sounding movies ever.
Just a perspective to point out, that is all
You guys really did the GT350 Dirty. That first clip was with exhaust valves closed. And that was stock exhaust. Need to do one with full exhaust
And the RS3 one was most definitely NOT an RS3, sounded more like a Golf GTI than anything
okay i also thought it was a honda engine, glad i'm not the only one
@@initialdfan8352GTI or s3 (same engine) was my guess aswell. The 5 banger sounds way better.
I'll be honest, I'm butt hurt that the Mustang got shafted
THAT
The LFA, Ferrari F40, Mazda 787B and Porsche GT3s are some of the best sounding cars imo.
This guy is really good he is deserving of his awards. Yet another great video from donuts.
The 787 got done dirty here. It's an epic sounding car.
This guy is great. He sounds so passionate about sound, and probably is really interesting to listen to
I always loved the 787, Pagani and the LFA. My favorite sounds out of motors ever. I will always appreciate Ferrari, Lamborghini and any and all V8’s, and nicely tuned 6 cylinder exhaust tones though.
The fact that you didn't have:
- the Busso V6,
- the F130 V12 (Ferrari F50)
- the F140 V12 (Ferrari F12berlinetta)
- Lamborghini's 6.5 V12
- Dodge's 6.2 supercharged V8 (Hellcat, Demon)
... makes me severely question the amount of thought put into this video.
I think if you heard these cars in person, you would find it much more dramatic than in the audio clips you provided.
they did the 787b dirty for sure.
it was lighter but don't forget they were lumped with hundreds of kilos of ballast as a punishment for being old-school Group C cars..
@@cj09beirathey provided shitty sound clips

Awesome game to play! It's amazing how our sight can play a role in how "good" a sound is! This guy is like my hero as music nerd, I would love the ability to switch off outside 'interference' and hear what he hears
The Zonda sound REALLY nice... but nothing beats the LFA.
😍 Both nice but different 👍
The 5 cylender was a horrible example 😢
I know, right?! That was easily the worst exhaust kit I've heard on the RS3/TT RS
Because the flyby was a 4cyl s3 not an rs3 lol
wasnt even a 5 cyl lol they used a s3 on the flyby

They could not have found a better expert for this series. We all hear, this dude *dissects* sound. No wonder he’s won Oscars for sound design. Seriously, a car/exhaust manufacturer should hire him for exhaust sound, much like what Lexus did with the LFA.
I would love to see how he would recreate these sounds.
You really need to record the cars in the same way. The variations in equipment and techniques makes this apples and oranges.
That's not up to them. They get the clips from TH-cam and social media
@@user-so9cy7ec8z I get that this isn't old school Top Gear where they get their hands on about every car. My point is that this is very impartial based on the recordings used.
The Ford Cosworth DFV and BMW S70/2 V12 are almost supernatural in terms of pitch, resonance tone, All Of It. remarkable.
You brought him back!!! The first video Mark did with you guys has always been a personal favorite of mine. 10/10.
I am so glad there's a second one of these. Loved the first one.

I like my m52 with no muffler. It’s quiet with the variable valve timing until I want it to be
This guy is so amazing and it's a joy to watch him react to these beautiful sounds . Glad to see him back for another episode
I really like this guy's passion. Paired with James' knowledge of engine layout, this was a really fun video.
Bro talked about Yamaha for the AE86, which is not commonly known. But, he failed to mention the greatest well-known fact, which is that Yamaha also perfected the LFA's sound. (He should have told that guy).
the V12 sounds of the f1 in the late 80's and begin 90's sounds perfect all the way ❤
It's so cool seeing Engine Simulator to demonstrate how the engines work.
man i love listening to people talk about things they are passionate and informed about. Really feels like they got excited, and thats just good content.
Mark is awesome!!! So glad you could have him back on the show ❤️❤️❤️
A channel with great plans! I love the Lexus LFA V10. LFA's V10 sound is an "angel's roar".
As a sound designer and audio engineer, it's fun hearing folks chat about noise
its even better with mark mangini in it
I've said it before but it's interesting listening to people talk about things they are both knowledgeable in and passionate about.
But, are you actually? Everyone claims job titles and then you realize they work at Home Depot.
@@ChainsawChristmas yeah I've worked in recording, composition, acoustics, and mixing/mastering
It's even more fun to talk about sound. Noise is background or unwanted sounds. All noises are sounds, but not all sounds are noises. Seems like a SOUND engineer might know that.
I KNEW IT WAS THE GT350, that special flatplane is so iconic, and gotta give HUGE credit to yamaha they made the trueno and LFA so good. this video is just so fun
That GT350 got shafted.
There’s no way that was a gt350 revving stationary.
You ought to put the 1950's BRM V16 on the list. I love the LFA sound from the day it was made. Hearing the BRM makes my heart race like no other engine sound.
The Carrera GT is also a legendary car both in looks and sounds which could be included in this list at least as the Porsche candidate
V10 all the way, pick any of them. Totally unique sound in every rev range.
Some LFA downshifts would have been amazing to hear
I'm seriously missing some F1 engines here. Probably the best sounding power units in existence

Mark is amazing here :) The Zonda R sound is fantastic, but it is clearly not as refined as the LFA's sound. The amount of engineering that went into that car is mindboggling. The LFA is and will always be the absolute number one on this list.
