that's because the Maul from TPM is not the same as later Maul. He changed. Once he was nothing but an assassin, a tool to be used, a weapon to be wielded. Sure he had skills of manipulation and tactics, and he had knowledge of the Sith, but he was never supposed to continue the Rule of Two and be Sidious' successor. So he was never taught the higher mysteries, and he was never given enough power to overthrow his master. This all changed after Naboo, where Maul had to fend for himself, and had to learn. He became more proactive, became less of a weapon and more of a wielder. Nowhere near Sidious' level but he managed quite well.
I think you've got Black Sun and Death Watch confused. Black Sun were a crime syndicate like the Pykes who assisted Maul, however the Death Watch were the Mandalorian traditionalists in the Mandalorian armour
Rats, you beat me to it. Kudos to your comment. Since I started watching Rob's Star Wars Comics Explained series, this marked as his "second" mistake I discovered and commented on. The first was the on Vader's Secret Plans storyline in which Rob mentioned incorrectly that the planet Genonsis was where Darth Vader lost his remaining limbs to become the cyborg villain we all grew to love. Me and others correctly commented that it happened on Mustafar, and that Genonsis was the planet that he lost his right arm in his first battle against Count Dooku. Good job!!! And may the Force be with you... always!!!
Man, Darth Maul is my favorite Sith Lord based off expanded universe alone. It's hard to bring it up too to other Star Wars fans who've only seen the films and think of him as a one note sith guy
*Read if you want to know what happened to Maul in canon after this comic book arc* After the Son of Dathomir comic arc, he returns in the end of season two of Star Wars Rebels in the two-part finale Twilight of the Apprentice. It is revealed that a now wiser and more level-headed Maul (yet still insane and powerful) planned to use an ancient Sith weapon activated using a Sith Holocron to "destroy his enemies" (most likely both the Jedi and the Sith as he no longer associates himself with either end). He flees the scene after blinding Kanan Jarrus and manipulating Ezra Bridger to look into the dark side of the force as Ahsoka Tano battles against Darth Vader upon the activation of the ancient Sith weapon, which turned out to be a life-ending pulse built upon an ancient Sith pyramid. We later see him in season three where he and Ezra combine the Sith Holocron from the season two finale and Kanan's Jedi Holocron to show them both infinite knowledge. Maul is then seen fleeing his space-lair and boarding a ship repeatedly saying "he lives!" (referring to Obi-Wan Kenobi most likely). He will appear in the upcoming episode this week.
I know for a fact that I'm not going to be the only one to point this out, but I have to get this out or else Its gonna bother me. The Mandalorian Splinter group was called Deathwatch. Black sun is a crime syndicate who are some of the galaxies leading slavers, and who have roughly the same influence as the Hutt families. Granted, Maul allied with them to, during the same story arc, but the two are different groups. Also, the Mandalorians helping Maul in this comic, are actually a splinter group, of the splinter group Deathwatch, as not every member of DW wanted to remain loyal to Maul, after he killed their leader and attempted to claim Mandalore for himself.
Giving other “TH-cam” people acknowledgement was a classy thing to do. Respect & humility are important values for me personally and seeing it in others always impresses me. Great job
great video Rob but what made it great was the acknowledgement of the reference materials and where you got them. Good on yah for that and hopefully they appreciate it
Robbie Davies I really hope they keep going. I only recently this past week even started watching the animated shows. Great writing and story telling. I can see why, with XD animation and video game tech and stuff, that robots are going to replace actors, too. I think I might now already have that preference. Just after this week.
The mandalorians weren't called black sun they're called death watch. The shadow collective is all of the crime organizations together and Black sun is mauls crime organization specifically which only included the mandalorians because he was the leader of deathwatch as well. Mandalorians weren't actually part of the criminal element.
Finally some more Star Wars. I wish you did more Star Wars comics as they are brilliant mate. So do more Star Wars, lots and lots of Star Wars with a little bit more Star Wars👍🏻
Love your normal show but I think running through Star wars ain`t so easy. You gave a brief story that would normally take days to watch. Thank you though
I've been a subscriber of your channel for a while, as well as the two Star Wars channels you mentioned, but PLEASE do more Star Wars stuff. You do it better than anyone.
I don't wanna be "that" guy but I have to point out the Mandalorian organisation is called "Death Watch". An awesome video as usual keep up the amazing work!!!
Hey mate just discovering all this cool Star Wars content out there and found your channel. Love the fact you started the video playing respect to other channels, liked and subbbed bud.
Great video Rob! Even for a hardcore star wars fan. Just to let you know, Maul has a major arc in the Rebels tv series, and also Mother Talzin will return in a few weeks!
Kenobi vs Maul. The final battle in Star Wars Rebels. It was short , but if you noticed, Maul tries to use the same move on Obi-Wan that he used to kill Qui-Gon according to Dave Filoni. Good stuff. Would have loved to see that face off between Maul and Ahsoka pre-Order 66 as well.
JB JG maul sucks in rebels in CLW he was awesome his skills in the darkside and Rage, hate for Kenobi was the only thing that kept him alive. He was ruthless aka a badass and in rebels he is an old sissy that cry's alot like luke in TFA and TLJ
Really crazy that you upload this today because last night I was watching the Darth Maul part of the show.. Great show may be kiddy at first but at Season 3 and up things get serious.. Also the Mando group was called The Deathwatch not The Black Sun.. good video I want more of this story..
Maul shows back up in the Rebels TV Show, hes also in the Ahsoka Novel. He makes a return at the end of the Clone Wars attempting to take over the Planet Mandalore .
He comes back in Star Wars Rebels, which is also cannon. Weird you didn't mention this. He's also mentioned a few times in passing in the cannon book Asoka.
Robb, you are incorrect on one major front: The Mandalorian subsect refers to itself as Death Watch, not the Black Sun. The Black Sun is a criminal orginization that has political and military ties to much of the Outer Rim of the Galaxy. The Shadow Collective was a criminal Alliance of the Black Sun, The Pykes (another criminal orginization), Death Watch (they would splinter off when Maul took full control into two groups, his supporters in Death Watch and those who protested his rule) and they were also funded by the Hutts.
a couple of errors in your retelling, The Black Sun Mandalorians where from Death Watch (death watch was the anti-peace militaristic movement you mentioned) first and then joined the black sun criminal empire due to a plan made by Darth Maul after the comic book, Maul now under the guise of the old master (he has given up on being sith) reappears in star wars rebels, which takes place around 10 years after the forming of the empire. It is revealed that he is looking for a sith holocron and "Some Guy" (he say's "I've found him" after using clairvoyance).
hey rob markymark here luv your stuff you're definitely a comic genius but i have been waiting on more history of marvel are u done with that all together just wanna know cuz that is some of my favorite shit peace n love brotha
can you do "how to kill superheroes" about these characters? Hawkman/Hawkgirl Dr strange Sentry Phoenix Hulk Silver surfer Susan storm Wonder woman Thor Ghostrider Hellboy Etrigan Shazam Scarlet witch Raven Hyperion Juggernaut Nightcrawler
The Legend stories have so much awesome info in them. I can understand why The Dis, didn't want 40+ years of story lines(may be too much for a younger person wanting to get into Star Wars) Star Wars fans just need to chill(happens to comic fans all thetime), this is no different than if your favorite Spider-Man is from a What-If, or not the 616 Spider-Man. They can't take your memories from you(you loose those all on your own)
I love this channels content but this video is full of misinformation. The Black Sun is a criminal syndicate, not at all related to Mandalorians or the group that saved Maul. Sidious is not a body hopper, not even in Legends and Luke doesnt really turn to the darkside. These are amateur mistakes that would be easily corrected by any knowledgeable Star Wars fan.
I would just like to say that Luke did turn to the dark side by the influence of Darth Sidious, Sidious himself after his death on the second Death Star came back in spirit and was able to inhabit a multitude of clones that he made of himeslf before his first death (I say first death because he would killed multiple times after that in his cloned bodies by the jedi), and in the end Luke does come back to the light with the help of his sister Leia, and the two along with others of the Skywalker lineage are able finally defeat Sidious by destroying all of his clone bodies hidden throughout the galaxy (so he cannot come back) and defeating Sidious for one last time. (I cannot go too much into details other than that because I have not studied enough for that but that's the essence of what I know on the Luke going to the dark side and Darth Sidious "body hopping" topic)
to be fair, sidious did hop into a new body in legends after his death on the deathstar in episode six. His spirit was held together by the darkside and he then took over a body of a clone as a means to "live forever"
The Madalorian group was called Death Watch. Sidus did use clones of himself to swap bodies in Legends. His dark side power was too strong for them, though. So they degraded quickly. He was going to use one of the kids as his final host body since it could hold up to his power. Also, Luke was turned tot he dark side by Sidus in Legends.
Brice Gonzalez Yes and no. Because of Palpatine's apparent immortality, Luke pretend to become his apprentice so that he could learn the Dark Side's secrets to destroy him. He had thought that he had overcome the temptation of the Dark Side and could safely learn from it, but in doing so he had started to walk his father's path. Leia reminded him of this and he quickly abandoned this course. So you can say that he somewhat turned to the Dark Side for a time, but it is not exactly what people think.
Rob, its not the Black Sun. The faction that you are referring to is Death Watch. Black Sun is a criminal empire that Maul used to expand his influence in the galaxy
I never comment but just wanted to say I love when you branch into other comics, and would love to see you do watchmen or sandman some time. Plus for the vs series I'd love too see Dr. Fate vs Dr Strange and Shazam vs Thor
Maul turned from a wasted character into one my favorite Star wars Characters, Clone Wars and Rebels make him more compelling
Howard The Duck I sometimes think he talks a little too much
RaginDXDemon Nice joke, I laugh a LOT
that's because the Maul from TPM is not the same as later Maul. He changed. Once he was nothing but an assassin, a tool to be used, a weapon to be wielded. Sure he had skills of manipulation and tactics, and he had knowledge of the Sith, but he was never supposed to continue the Rule of Two and be Sidious' successor. Howard The Duck eyyyyy that name
Behemous I'm pretty much a hardcore star wars fan, and. Maul is my my favorite, I knew everything you said, but thanks anyway
Bruh...time to collab.
listen to him! SWT is one of the best channels around!
Star Wars Theory I agree Rob the other guys are good but SWT player all day!!
Star Wars Theory yess
Star Wars Theory Epic😱, if two of favorite channels do ... Do it. 🙏😎
fuck off
I think you've got Black Sun and Death Watch confused. Black Sun were a crime syndicate like the Pykes who assisted Maul, however the Death Watch were the Mandalorian traditionalists in the Mandalorian armour
Just want to add no hate, I love your style of presentation and narration so thank you for the video
Omg thank you
Rats, you beat me to it. Kudos to your comment. Since I started watching Rob's Star Wars Comics Explained series, this marked as his "second" mistake I discovered and commented on. Man, Darth Maul is my favorite Sith Lord based off expanded universe alone. It's hard to bring it up too to other Star Wars fans who've only seen the films and think of him as a one note sith guy
Maul isn't the only sith lord to use the darkside of the force to keep himself alive, see Darth Sion from Knights of the Old Republic 2
maesematias no it isn't and neither is Darth Sion so no as far as we know Maul is the only sith lord to use the darkside to stay alive.
Maul was trained as a sith assasin, so during the final duel on naboo maul was still a sith
why wasnt maul a sith? he was the old mans apprentice and had the darth title. am i missing something?
blackvial
He is DARTH Maul and was given that title. He was a Dark Lord of the Sith, an apprentice but he was still Sith.
Sword of the Morning
Read MSmart 19, he's the one who is saying that Maul isn't a sith
*Read if you want to know what happened to Maul in canon after this comic book arc*

Obi wan kills maul in the next episode
I love this era in your channel. Really, my favorite.
Darth Maul's in Star Wars Rebels
Right, know I. He mentions the series, but knows not its contents, quick to publish this pupil was, unless comics he meant only.
FU6 - C: Drive Not Found The channel is Comics Explained not cartoons explained
He should have mentioned it.
he mentioned the clone wars cartoon. so this point is already moot.
But not Rebels... it's misleading to newer people who are going to walk away form this thinking that Maul's story ended where the video did.
I know for a fact that I'm not going to be the only one to point this out, but I have to get this out or else Its gonna bother me. The Mandalorian Splinter group was called Deathwatch. YES. Thank you for the Star Wars, Rob. You're easily one of my favorite people, ever. Keep up the great work!
Man, Darth Maul is one helluva guy. I always liked him since his first appereance, glad that they've done more with him. So epic!
Giving other “TH-cam” people acknowledgement was a classy thing to do. Respect & humility are important values for me personally and seeing it in others always impresses me. Great job
great video Rob but what made it great was the acknowledgement of the reference materials and where you got them. Good on yah for that and hopefully they appreciate it
Darth maul is also in star wars rebels. And he tries to seduce ezra.
Jalapeño go out of context that could be seen very differently 😂😂😂
That episode was so badass. Rebels is better than the new movies.
I'm just envisioning a cross-dressing Maul "why hello there big boy Ezra."
Robbie Davies
I really hope they keep going. I only recently this past week even started watching the animated shows. Great writing and story telling. I can see why, with XD animation and video game tech and stuff, that robots are going to replace actors, too. I think I might now already have that preference. Just after this week.
Rob! Dude...your Star Wars videos are KICK ASS! Awesome that you gave some shoutouts to the other channels I subscribe to! :D
Robbie Davies somebody didn't get laid last night.
Well that's started quick
My favorite part in Son of Dathomir isthe droids going "Negative". Never stops cracking me up.

Like how you laid the schedule out in the description. Thanks.
The mandalorians weren't called black sun they're called death watch. The shadow collective is all of the crime organizations together and Black sun is mauls crime organization specifically which only included the mandalorians because he was the leader of deathwatch as well. Mandalorians weren't actually part of the criminal element.

Maul comes back in Star Wars Rebels. A lot of people want him to come back in an Obi Wan stand alone movie too.

Love your normal show but I think running through Star wars ain`t so easy. You gave a brief story that would normally take days to watch. Thank you though
"Deathwatch" Bro, "Black Sun" was another crime syndicate that they worked with within the "Shadow Collective"
I pray they make Son of Dathomir into the new episodes coming out
*doubt*
Hey mate just discovering all this cool Star Wars content out there and found your channel. Love the fact you started the video playing respect to other channels, liked and subbbed bud.

Darth Maulis in the Star Wars Rebels. His story continues :)
"Battle of Attrition" and "Cutting A Swath" are my two favorite things rob says...
Maul returns in Star Wars Rebels and its canon
This is true
Spartacus of Thrace No
JB JG maul sucks in rebels in CLW he was awesome his skills in the darkside and Rage, hate for Kenobi was the only thing that kept him alive. He was ruthless aka a badass and in rebels he is an old sissy that cry's alot like luke in TFA and TLJ
JB JG this comment is 3 years old I know but it’s a travesty that you really said that...
Big fan of this comic. Glad you covered it
Freaking love star wars @Rob keep these vids coming
Really crazy that you upload this today because last night I was watching the Darth Maul part of the show.. Great show may be kiddy at first but at Season 3 and up things get serious.. Also the Mando group was called The Deathwatch not The Black Sun.. good video I want more of this story..

You should definitely do videos like this rob Awesome video
Two questions: Does this story take place before or after his fight with Sidious in the clone wars series? And where in this is Mauls brother, Savage?
Rob, the group were former death watch not black sun.
SWNerd97 thank youuu
well done sir, the SW universe feels more complete
thank you so much for clearing up the difference between canon and legends. saying for a friend.
I just watch whatever you upload; to hear your voice and forget the rest of the world is going on. Go Rob-corps! Ooo-Rob!
Maul shows back up in the Rebels TV Show, hes also in the Ahsoka Novel. He makes a return at the end of the Clone Wars attempting to take over the Planet Mandalore

Please do more star wars!!! Your voice is the story telling voice
Thank you for explaining canon to me I honestly didn't know.
a couple of errors in your retelling,
The Black Sun Mandalorians where from Death Watch (death watch was the anti-peace militaristic movement you mentioned) first and then joined the black sun criminal empire due to a plan made by Darth Maul
after the comic book, Maul now under the guise of the old master (he has given up on being sith) reappears in star wars rebels, which takes place around 10 years after the forming of the empire. It is revealed that he is looking for a sith holocron and "Some Guy" (he say's "I've found him" after using clairvoyance).
finally!!! more star wars videos!
Thank you for all your hard work and research, you rock.
Great video, the only thing is the "Black Sun" is a criminal group. The Mandalorian group was called Death watch ( idk correct spelling sorry).
Have you made a video on The Endless from the Sandman series?
love your star wars videos(the mistake are obvious, but hey you tried to shake things up a bit) :D
I didn't know Prince Xizor worked under Maul. That's very interesting to see in the panels!
Darth maul has always been my favorite character ever since I saw him bust out the double blade in star wars ep. 1. and now I have more reasons !

Can we see some Dark Horse comic reviews? I'd love to see review on Madman.
Lenox W Yeah, death watch is the group he's thinking of.
I would just like to say that Luke did turn to the dark side by the influence of Darth Sidious, Sidious himself after his death on the second Death Star came back in spirit and was able to inhabit a multitude of clones that he made of himeslf before his first death (I say first death because he would killed multiple times after that in his cloned bodies by the jedi), and in the end Luke does come back to the light with the help of his sister Leia, and the two along with others of the Skywalker lineage are able finally defeat Sidious by destroying all of his clone bodies hidden throughout the galaxy (so he cannot come back) and defeating Sidious for one last time. to be fair, sidious did hop into a new body in legends after his death on the deathstar in episode six. His spirit was held together by the darkside and he then took over a body of a clone as a means to "live forever"

Philip Guitar Music no that was her sister tiplar
Maul was in the end of the Han Solo movie!!!
Rob, its not the Black Sun. The faction that you are referring to is Death Watch. Black Sun is a criminal empire that Maul used to expand his influence in the galaxy
I love all your vids man!
I never comment but just wanted to say I love when you branch into other comics, and would love to see you do watchmen or sandman some time. Plus for the vs series I'd love too see Dr. Fate vs Dr Strange and Shazam vs Thor
It looks like she has a pokeball on her forehead, mother tousen go!
Fantastic!
N1 Rob ... Enjoyed this
i think you've greatly underestimated how dangerous General Grievous is. I've seen him take out like half a dozen well trained Jedi at once.
we see him again in star wars rebels trying to overthrow the emperor
Have you already covered Quantam and Woody? If not, that would be pretty cool.
Rob, I think you mean to say Deathwatch, Black Sun is a criminal syndicate rival to the Hutt Cartel
You cant just gloss over Chewies death, its one of the most bad ass deaths in any sifi anywhere.
Hectorzeroni chewy and getting planet crush was cool.
Truth....
