I find it hilarious how Jean Grey is one of the most powerful characters in the marvel universe in terms of comics, but in the X-Men animated series, she would pass out after reading a single person's mind.
Yeah, in the comics she was super weak too due to lack of control. The Phoenix Saga allowed her to gain higher levels of power in the comics.
Not so much in the 90's cartoon.
@@harley8047 they had to reduce her power because she had two of the most powerful abilities of all: telepathy AND telekinesis. who needs cyclops and storm and rogue when you have a very powerful telekinetic?
she's currently very powerful in the comics (even without the phoenix force), and i honestly find her annoying. she's just one-shotting a lot of people.🙄
i liked her when she had omega-level telepathy and normal telekinesis, but she now seems to have near omega-level telekinesis as well.
@@thispersonrighthere9024 you realize, Jean Grey can't multitask? You never see her use telekinesis and telepathy at the same time! She has to focus more mental energy into 1 or the other.

I don't really like this story or Grant Morrison that much, but Xmen 97 has been handling these stories in a very short and tasteful manner so i'll bite into it.
Feel the same but the story is what brought me back to the comics in the early 2000s
Chris Claremont, Grant Morrison, and Joss Whedon runs are my favorite X-men runs ever.

The art work always reminded me of the Captain Stern story from the Heavy Metal animated movie.
At first everybody kinda looked like sylvester stallone, but it grew on me. I'd say it's great art; just different.

Man I remember picking this one up when I was 11 as one of my first ever experiences with comics. I had no idea what I was getting into. The art style made it a-lot more grotesque, it worked well for this story but not many others.

"A bit" too dark storyline for me, and if I remember right I soon after the appearance of Cassandra Nova I quit reading the X-Men (I remember Cyclops being possessed by Apocalypse being some of the last stories I really read). 70's, 80's and early 90's joyful Chris Claremont times for me, thanks.
And I'm not also fond how 16 million mutants were OK to wipe out in story purposes, but Wolverine etc. can't be killed off no matter what. (In The Days of The Future Past he was killed by a Sentinel, but what I've heard he can now regenerate from a single drop of blood. Okay, the excitement and drama is that old Logan is OP as f*ck?)

Rob, I'm one of the few who loved the "Here comes tomorrow" storyline. Since it touches on Sublime, Cassandra Nova, and what's left of the Mutants race, I think it'll be a great addition to throwback Thursday.

Ugh... I hope one day we actually get a movie that showcases Cyclops and Emma Frost, they're so interesting.
I was lucky this is the era of comics when I was a teenager, x-men at this time was absolutely amazing.
Another job well done, Rob. I love how detailed your backgrounds are on your stories. There's a lot of comic book guys out there, but you are certainly one of the very few that give full backgrounds on the environments of the stories. Such as what's going on in the development of the comic book, but also the supporting storylines that help better understand the contexts of these runs. Kudos, dude. :-)
And though I'm not a fan of the art work here with Grant Morrison, I do really like his writing.

This is the first x-men story I ever read, and the artwork gave me cancer, Jean looks like a guy xD.
When I first red it, I hated E is for Extinction. But now after years and after the enthusiastic introduction of the story anew... I somehow ....still don´t like it :P
Hey Rob, anthropology major here. Just wanted to let you know what Morrison actually took the more scientifically accepted depiction of prehistory. As humans pushed out of Africa, competition pressure actually did push the neanderthals to extinction. Yes, there was a small amount of admixture between the two, but it was minimal as it only accounts for 2-4%, at best, of an individual. That means only a very small subset of neanderthals had the chance to mate with humans. Also, neanderthal DNA is not present in many groups of humans. You're doing great, but I figure you'd appreciate clarification when possible.

Depends on what their powers are. Able to read backwards or forwards man probably won't help much against a tank. A girl who can hear the sound of any garage door opener within 10 miles probably won't do much either. That person born with 10 thumbs though, absolutely going to solo a sentinel...
16 million civilians really isn't a threat to 40 foot tall tanks that can fly and incorporate parts from nearby vehicles to repair damage. The things are walking war crimes...

90s Marvel was basically ONLY X-Men.
Jim Lee came onto the Scene in a HUGE way and his art COMPLETELY changed how we saw the X-Men.
Everything else; Avengers, Defenders and Spiderman were all being written and drawn very poorly.
It's no wonder that they almost went under. Now MCU Dominates the general public.

I warmed on Grant Morrison's run overtime but I don't regard it highly, there are some good changes he made but there are so many bad ones too, This run marked a sad turn for Beast. Where as before he was a lovable likable poetic bouncy blue furball, Grant Morrison made him cynical, depressing, and most certainly unlikable a trend that would continue from every writer since this run. I miss the Beast of old, not the look, the secondary mutation thing was fine, but his character is what I felt got stripped away by Morrison. I just miss when Beast was fun :(

God the art in Morrison's run was awful. Hated those movie inspired costumes, yuck ...
Homo sapiens and Neanderthals did interbreed to an extent, but it was far from an even merger. Something like 2-4% of human DNA is Neanderthal, the rest is Sapiens. And even then, that’s for Eurasia, where Neanderthals originally evolved, people from other parts of the world have even less Nea DNA. Though it is sometimes swapped out with other near ancestors - Native Australians for instance posses up to 6% Denisovan DNA instead of Neanderthal.

Has anybody every thought that, if Marvel wants to bring mutants back, all they have to do is evoke Chaos and Order and have them realize that the "No more mutants" chaos magic spell disturbed the balance and that, while history can't keep the event from happening, the fact that chaos magic was used could mean that the meaning of the spell could be altered to restore order through chaos. Thus the new meaning would become "No, more mutants."
Of course, by them Disney will have a deal with Fox over the X-Men movies...

Kyle Shepherd this storyline came out in 2001. none of the mutants who died in this story are important to the greater marvel universe.
Also this run was right after the 2000 X-Men movie, the film that pretty much saved superhero films.

The story was good but the art style bugged me.
This was the deathknell for my love of x-men comics, Grant Morrison's tone just ruined any enjoyment, the artwork was appalling, and it just felt like the comics never really recovered since this time period.

One thing which was creepy at the time ( which may be lost on many due to the way marvel listed this
Issues release month ) was that this issue came out around 911.
Later in the issue,Breast and some men as seen in panels eerily similar to the destruction televised on that terrible day.
Pure coincidence, but a shock at the time.

As a massive X-men fan I cannot fathom why many X-men fans regard this series so well. I positively despise this run. It reads more like, well, the Ultimate comics where everybody is ugly and unlikable. And the artwork matches that ugliness.
