Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan

  • In rural Kyrgyzstan men still marry their women the old-fashioned way: by abducting them off the street and forcing them to be their wife. Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that's made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow a young groom named Kubanti as he surprised his teenage girlfriend Nazgul with the gift of marriage/kidnapping.

This’s shocking how u ppl would shamelessly accuse islam of the things that happens routinely in ur non muslim countries in my muslim country it’s a CRIM to even cat call women even asking for a woman’s number is considered illegal us muslim women feel the safest in our countries unlike the women in western and non muslim countries the statistics of sexual assault are over the roof yet u have the audacity to make these videos against islam i mean we know it’s a propaganda but unfortunately many ignorants believe it

I imagine the “kidnapping” where the presenter was witness to was consensual (in the video, the men are seen to instruct the woman how the kidnapping will unfold and that she can beat them if she likes) but she is putting up some resistance to keep the appearances I guess (so that it does not seem to be preplanned to the rest of the community). I cannot imagine the camera crew being willful participants in an actual kidnapping of a stranger as it happens in other cases, just for filming purposes.

This so-called kidnapping is just a game. The bride and the groom already know each other and they make the plan. Different countries have different traditions. Indian brides are suppose to be shy and cry before leaving their houses for the groom's. If they don't, aunties talk behind them. I think it is similar in Kirgizstan. Brides are suppose to throw tantrum during kidnapping or aunties will gossip. That girl was also putting a show. But when the food is served, it means the show is over. Girls are just dramatic no matter where they are from.

I've read that the tradition of bride kidnapping which is widespread not only in Kyrgyzstan but Central Asia in general comes from times when the grooms family had to pay a dowry to the bride which was negotiated with her family who of course wants a high price for the woman. So when the negotiations failed because the price was to considered to expensive the groom's family started kidnapping the woman, marrying her immediately after that to the groom, I think oftentimes rape included. Because afterwards she was considered unclean which meant the price would drop. Afterwards the grooms family knocks on the door of the brides family as thieves with lots of gifts, a sheep etc. as a dowry to appease them and make it easier for them to accept the merging of the families since the groom is now probably the only man willing to marry the unclean woman.
Since this method proved to be very effective in finding a bride and have her cheaper (bc maybe she is more beautiful, better chef, cleaner etc. than the groom could afford), it became a widespread tradition to first kidnap and marry the woman, then bring the gifts and over time the practice of paying dowry upfront vanished.
Of course the woman or girl is treated like an object to sell and buy but also as human as she is welcomed to the new family where traditionally she is in a weird position having to prove herself to the family as a good wife to the groom, which is basically being a good servant in terms of cooking and cleaning. And since she fought and cried on the wedding day she now has to accept her life as the wive in the new family with whom a good relationship is now desirable. So she proves herself, the groom and his family has managed to achieve better leverage first over the the brides family to accept the wedding and secondly over the bride to serve as a good wive in their household. She pushes away her trauma and powerlessness from the wedding and tries to achieve a good standing in her new family. Her needs and emotions are not addressed and consequently everybody can make a little fun about the kidnapping, wedding and call it a happy marriage and happy tradition since the now wive fit in and made the best out of it since traditionally she most likely has to live in that marriage for the rest of her life. Even for the wives laughing about the wedding kidnappings even their own helps them accept their own fates and see it as something positive if they don't want to cry about their trauma and life situation for the rest of their life. Also they have learned through their own wedding and marriage that the brides emotions, needs, trauma don't need to be addressed.
It's a tradition that creates and maintains a clear power imbalance and serves primarily men, but also families, it's patriarchy at it's best.

You’re wrong. In my country they also used to kidnap brides but nowadays they do it less because they pay a fine for that now, which most of them can not afford, although some pay it willingly. Anyways, you’re wrong about what you said about her mother, she probably didn’t think it was necessary or good for her daughter when they gave her back to the kidnapper. She says in the video, the cousins etc put pressure on them, telling the « it’s tradition ! You’re wrong you shouldn’t take her back ! ». She didn’t develop it but as it was also in my country’s tradition to kidnap brides I can tell you for sure that she didn’t want to give her daughter back but couldn’t do otherwise because she’s a woman and she has to OBEY. So when the male cousins / older men in the family got angry about them bringing their daughter back, when they scolded the girl’s dad for doing so, when they brought up « it’s tradition! » the girl’s dad probably felt ashamed in front of the elder men (cousins, uncles..) and in those societies you HAVE TO respect older men and DO what they tell you to do, the dad probably decided to give the girl back to the kidnaper and the mom couldn’t do anything about it but accept it because SHE IS A WOMAN and she CAN NOT argue with her husband and other men in the family. If she talks back or disobeys she can be beaten or anyways, the men can just bring the girl back to the kidnaper’s house forcefully even if the mother is against. Anyways, I can guarantee you that this mom wasn’t happy about giving her daughter back autherwise they wouldn’t have even brought her home in first place. She just had to accept it because she’s a woman and she can not do anything because men decide and she has to obey. No one can understand her sorrow except those who went through the same thing. That thing happened to my aunt, she was kidnapped and run away but her uncle forced her to get married to her kidnapper whom she didn’t even knew.

See one way to get this tradition stop is to twist into something similar.
Where instead of kidnapping, the wife gets picked up in a nice vehicle and she voluntarily gets in. Making the Guy look like the biggest badass in the village and making it go viral.
Essentially, the man courts the woman so much so to the point she that does want to get married to him. So they both plan it out.
Then the guy simply arrives to, "steal the bride", but everybody will be in awe as the guy sings a song or something and she voluntarily gets in happily with no assistance.
The whole town will be like no F*cking way and all the guys will want to do the same as a sort of subliminal dick measuring contest.
The problem is that she needs to go into hiding until the time they planned out to stop the chance of having some guy actually kidnap her.

The cast members learned about bride kidnapping and they used this video as an example. They downplayed it and made it seem as if she knew what was happening and was a willing participant. When they showed how she was doing at that point in time (2018) she said that she was very happy and was in love with her husband. Despite her saying that, seeing that happen and hearing her call out to her mom and cry while everyone around her is laughing just really makes me sick to my stomach

This has nothing to do with islam. Actually this is forbidden in islam and they do so much stuff that are haram jn islam they drink vodka like water while drinking any sort of alcohol is as it is widely known strictly forbidden also touching a non mahrim man or women is also forbidden let alone the scene we have watched where more than one man was touching the girl and here naked legs (which is also a sin since that is clearly not a hijab) multiple times. And marrying someone without their consent is also not allowed. So yes as the professor said this is a violation of islam. May Allah guide them to quite these traditions and follow the right path

love does not stem from kidnapping. A consensual, dignified, mature relationship cannot bloom from a couple that was created as a result of violence, not as one where the victim calls for something that was forcibly taken away from her and not one where the girls' screaming, kicking and protests are invalid.

@@THELASTREALKING93 ...i dont know. I've heard this arguement made a lot of times and it always confused me. And i always ask them this quiestion-"Do you believe men and women should be given equal opportunities in life, career wise, job wise, etc"
Because if you dont think that women should be paid the same as men for the same job, then you dont get to make that arguement. A lot of women choose to quit their jobs and stay at home to raise their kids,in which case they are trusting their husbands to take care of them financially.
Now if the man decided he wanted to divorce his wife, but the wife had not been to work in years cause she was busy taking care of him and his wife, she would not have the financial stability to live a normal life.
I agree that there are a lot of gold diging women who are terribe people. But the same goes for men. There are men who are terrible people who would do unspeakable things to women(dont deny it, )
and also, there is also the problem of maternity leave. Do you have any idea what kind of toll pregnancy takes on womens bodies?? And now imagine having to go back to work before youre fully recovered.
P.S, if she wants a divorce after putting up with him for 12 years, then theres prolly something else to it
