Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 มิ.ย. 2012
- In rural Kyrgyzstan men still marry their women the old-fashioned way: by abducting them off the street and forcing them to be their wife. Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that's made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow a young groom named Kubanti as he surprised his teenage girlfriend Nazgul with the gift of marriage/kidnapping.

The Little Blerdmaid I bet you she wasn’t crying when they took her, a mother should always be protecting her kids at all costs no matter what culture or religion bs you deal with. She let them take her away knowing she didn’t want to, she failed as a parent in my opinion.
You’re wrong. In my country they also used to kidnap brides but nowadays they do it less because they pay a fine for that now, which most of them can not afford, although some pay it willingly. Anyways, you’re wrong about what you said about her mother, she probably didn’t think it was necessary or good for her daughter when they gave her back to the kidnapper. She says in the video, the cousins etc put pressure on them, telling the « it’s tradition ! You’re wrong you shouldn’t take her back ! ». She didn’t develop it but as it was also in my country’s tradition to kidnap brides I can tell you for sure that she didn’t want to give her daughter back but couldn’t do otherwise because she’s a woman and she has to OBEY. So when the male cousins / older men in the family got angry about them bringing their daughter back, when they scolded the girl’s dad for doing so, when they brought up « it’s tradition! » the girl’s dad probably felt ashamed in front of the elder men (cousins, uncles..) and in those societies you HAVE TO respect older men and DO what they tell you to do, the dad probably decided to give the girl back to the kidnaper and the mom couldn’t do anything about it but accept it because SHE IS A WOMAN and she CAN NOT argue with her husband and other men in the family. If she talks back or disobeys she can be beaten or anyways, the men can just bring the girl back to the kidnaper’s house forcefully even if the mother is against. Anyways, I can guarantee you that this mom wasn’t happy about giving her daughter back autherwise they wouldn’t have even brought her home in first place. She just had to accept it because she’s a woman and she can not do anything because men decide and she has to obey. No one can understand her sorrow except those who went through the same thing. That thing happened to my aunt, she was kidnapped and run away but her uncle forced her to get married to her kidnapper whom she didn’t even knew.
That is WILDDDD. Can you imagine you're just going to get some milk and bread and someone just kidnaps you and takes you to their family and tries to marry you in your errand running clothes? I cannot believe this is a real tradition.

I've read that the tradition of bride kidnapping which is widespread not only in Kyrgyzstan but Central Asia in general comes from times when the grooms family had to pay a dowry to the bride which was negotiated with her family who of course wants a high price for the woman. So when the negotiations failed because the price was to considered to expensive the groom's family started kidnapping the woman, marrying her immediately after that to the groom, I think oftentimes rape included. Because afterwards she was considered unclean which meant the price would drop. Afterwards the grooms family knocks on the door of the brides family as thieves with lots of gifts, a sheep etc. as a dowry to appease them and make it easier for them to accept the merging of the families since the groom is now probably the only man willing to marry the unclean woman.
Since this method proved to be very effective in finding a bride and have her cheaper (bc maybe she is more beautiful, better chef, cleaner etc. than the groom could afford), it became a widespread tradition to first kidnap and marry the woman, then bring the gifts and over time the practice of paying dowry upfront vanished.
Of course the woman or girl is treated like an object to sell and buy but also as human as she is welcomed to the new family where traditionally she is in a weird position having to prove herself to the family as a good wife to the groom, which is basically being a good servant in terms of cooking and cleaning. And since she fought and cried on the wedding day she now has to accept her life as the wive in the new family with whom a good relationship is now desirable. So she proves herself, the groom and his family has managed to achieve better leverage first over the the brides family to accept the wedding and secondly over the bride to serve as a good wive in their household. She pushes away her trauma and powerlessness from the wedding and tries to achieve a good standing in her new family. Her needs and emotions are not addressed and consequently everybody can make a little fun about the kidnapping, wedding and call it a happy marriage and happy tradition since the now wive fit in and made the best out of it since traditionally she most likely has to live in that marriage for the rest of her life. Even for the wives laughing about the wedding kidnappings even their own helps them accept their own fates and see it as something positive if they don't want to cry about their trauma and life situation for the rest of their life. Also they have learned through their own wedding and marriage that the brides emotions, needs, trauma don't need to be addressed.
It's a tradition that creates and maintains a clear power imbalance and serves primarily men, but also families, it's patriarchy at it's best.
Please don't use the term "power imbalance" it's cringe, otherwise good post.

i started crying when she screamed for her mom
The worst thing is the fact that those old grandmas besides her are taking it as a some sort of joke even though they've felt the same feeling of being kidnapped without you knowing anything about it before.
Brainwashing.
I don't think they were married the same way since, as it was mentioned in the video, due to communism such traditional/religious practises were forbidden. Although, I think they actually knew that girl wanted to marry him in the end (since they were already a couple) and she was just pretending to not want to get kidnapped in order to not let others believe that she was desperate to get married by complying from the start (again I'm not entirely sure that is 100% sure about this but, in the end, I think the girl was smiling and accepting the whole thing...)

I hope she is doing ok now, I hope that bride can give us all a life update
Wow I'm genuinely shocked of the striking resemblance. I'm from a North-eastern state of India called Manipur, and we also have such tradtition of kidnapping brides but not directly from homes, rather when going on dates or casual meeting and will take the bride home and in most cases the couple then stay the night in a friend's home but can also directly take her in his home. In the next morning, the groom's father and 2 or 3 uncles visit the bride's home and formally ask for the girl's hand in marriage to their son. We can conclude that we all have the same ancestors I believe😁

@@THELASTREALKING93 ...i dont know. I've heard this arguement made a lot of times and it always confused me. And i always ask them this quiestion-"Do you believe men and women should be given equal opportunities in life, career wise, job wise, etc"
Because if you dont think that women should be paid the same as men for the same job, then you dont get to make that arguement. A lot of women choose to quit their jobs and stay at home to raise their kids,in which case they are trusting their husbands to take care of them financially.
Now if the man decided he wanted to divorce his wife, but the wife had not been to work in years cause she was busy taking care of him and his wife, she would not have the financial stability to live a normal life.
I agree that there are a lot of gold diging women who are terribe people. But the same goes for men. There are men who are terrible people who would do unspeakable things to women(dont deny it, )

I watched a Japanese reality show called Ainori. It’s about Japanese singles who travel across certain countries and fall in love. One of their trips was in Kyrgyzstan. The cast members learned about bride kidnapping and they used this video as an example. They downplayed it and made it seem as if she knew what was happening and was a willing participant. When they showed how she was doing at that point in time (2018) she said that she was very happy and was in love with her husband. Despite her saying that, seeing that happen and hearing her call out to her mom and cry while everyone around her is laughing just really makes me sick to my stomach

I was explained this tradition by my Jordanian foreign exchange student-sister. This is so much more terrifying than she explained. Probably because she didn't want to
Its not that she had ‘accepted’ her fate when she gave in and ate whatever the mothers had offered. She was exhausted
Nope. Everyone can have their own beliefs but no one can force their own beliefs on others in actions that affect them like this. Nations don’t matter. Otherwise, if the man’s tradition is kidnapping the bride, then the bride can say that her tradition is killing the man who kidnapped her.
@Yunus Hailey You can continue your tradition in a way that affects only yourself and those who wants to be affected. Just because you care about your national identity doesn't mean others in your country do, and they have a right not to subscribe to the identity and abandon the culture. I know I don't care about my country and its culture, and other people in other countries can also choose to feel the same way if they want. No one should be identified by their country anyways, unless they as an individual wants to.
@Yunus Hailey Your tradition is cruel and evil. Every tradition is just an idea that began in the past. Once we used to put black cats in a wooden box, and smash the box and the cat because of superstition. That nonsense was repeated for hundreds of years, and it even lives on today, but the wooden box is now painted and the content is candy. Still utterly stupid. Just because an idea is old, it doesn't make it good. On the contrary, it's stupid not to take old ideas up to revision. That is how a society and a people improve themselves. That is the very reason every country - including yours - has extinct traditions in the first place. Otherwise, we would still perform some stupid nonsense going back to the stone-age, simply because "Well it's tradition".
@Yunus Hailey shut tf up it’s disgusting
@Yunus Hailey I don't think that's how you got your whole population from Asian looking people into European

Lets face it, in Islam, like in many religions, women are classed below men, and mistreating them doesn't quite have the same gravity as mistreating a man.
