Brides for sale - Bulgaria's Roma marriage market | DW Documentary

  • The Kalaidzhi bride market takes place in the southeast of Bulgaria every year. Unmarried women are often paired off with financially strong men.
But more and more young Roma are rebelling against the old tradition. For young Kalaidzhi the annual bride market at Bachkovo Monastery is the only chance to find a partner. Their Orthodox Christian faith and traditional code of conduct prohibit them from dating, flirting or having any other pre-marital relations. The Kalaidzhi - a name meaning tinsmiths or boilermakers - marry only within the group. Finding a spouse from outside - and in particular a non-Roma Bulgarian - is out of the question. Love is only a secondary consideration. What matters is the dowry. A growing number of young Roma, however, are rebelling against the traditional marriage market. They want to make their own decisions, and to love and marry the person of their choice. For girls especially - some as young as 15 when they are put up for marriage - the wedding is the end of self-determined life. They will subsequently be housewives and mothers. The film accompanies 17-year-old Teni and 19-year-old Maria in the week before the market day. For them it means buying a lot of new clothes and masses of other preparations. Can this be a way to find true love? And how is the outdated ritual affected by the Internet and social media?

DW Docs, you should re-do a documentary on them, as on this one, the brides market did not take place (because of some stupid gangs). I would be interresting to see what a real market would be like.

My best friend who was Roma was sold at 10 years old she just disappeared one day from school and no one cared I went out looking for her and found out from some of her siblings the man took her to a different country. I still look for her on social media 14 years later but I don’t even know her last name or if she is alive. She wasn’t the fists girl to disappear a 8yo form a different family was also sold. I know these Roma are different from her family but it still disgusts me that a family would do that to their child. I really hope she is alive and well and maybe we will meet again.

The same thing happened to my friend who was 16, and I was 10 at the time. She was so scared and I didn't know what to do. I never saw her again. Many claim that it's just traditions, but if it causes so much pain it's not worth it

Why does Western media always have to present Bulgaria in the worst way possible?? That’s not at all what the reality looks like for the average Bulgarian(these are Roma gypsies and they’re a minority. So, their traditions have nothing to do with the centuries-old Bulgarian Christian traditions) Why don’t you make a documentary, for once, about all the ancient civilisations that have inhabited these lands or about the natural resorts that are protected by UNESCO, for example - basically something educational that will change the way Bulgaria is being perceived by the rest of the world?? I mean let’s face it, the reason why the Western world think so less of Eastern Europe is exactly because of such documentaries …

Teni seems like a hard worker who is prepared to support his future wife and children. He also has much respect for his family. Maria seems to be very sweet and kind and she’d make a good wife and mother. Both of these young people have so much respect and I truly wish them the best!

      1. non of non-roma bulgarian would accept the roma (may there is excepts but very rare)
      2. again it is not a forcing... they will meet for a few months before do anything and can say no...
      3. the ''selling'' work as a trial... if the guy have serious intentions then will not sorry the money...
      4. it is also mostly bulgarian roma thing... in rest of the world we dont do that for a long time... (of course there is some families but more like the 10%...)

  • @zzip0
    @zzip0 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +51

As a Bulgarian (not Roma) I can say that once in 1990 I was offered to buy such a Roma wife. The "seller" was her brother with whom we were serving together our military service. The price was about 1500 DM, which later became 750 EUR. I usually don't like Roma women, but that one was really, really beautiful.
But this was out of question - my family traditions don't permit such thing, so this never went further than a joke and exchanging some nice smiles.

I think it’s important for husband and wife to like eachother. They may have different views and want to raise their children differently from one another. Lots of fighting isn’t good for a child, it will make them stressed. Even if the parents don’t fight, if they are cold to one another it can make the child feel bad. I’m not saying arranged marriage is bad but I think it’s still important for them to like eachother.

    • @rachelcookie321

@@MONIKASINGH-dl8iw the increase in divorce has nothing to do with the decrease in arranged marriages. In the modern world we’ve learnt it’s important to be happy and safe. In the past couples were expected to stay together even if they hated each other as getting a divorce was considered bad. Divorce rights are higher but you will probably find that more couples are happier now.

It’s kind of the same thing in western cultures. If a man has money, it opens up an entirely new catalog of women to choose from. And even more so when it comes to reputation or prowess.. for example if a girl is the daughter of a doctor, she definitely won’t be marrying a poor man.. money means a lot. The only difference is the man isn’t paying her parents. The one he’ll be paying is his wife because she will use him for his money.

Thank you very, very much for adding English subtitles when the people are speaking in their language. I am completely blind and I cannot see the video at all. So I appreciate the voice overs so that I can hear the girls stories as they tell them. Thanks bunches. I wish more documentaries did this particularly those that deal with exotic customs where the people are non-English speakers. I really do appreciate the voice DVBBS. Thanks. I hope it inspires more.

      Oh Great! .
Just asking for the info out of curiosity.
How do you type this message then?

Pоl Кноl are use the dictation program in Siri to type my messages. It is easier than using the on screen keyboard, as there is no home row for me to rest my hands on. The computer keyboard is still better for that. Only I use my portable devices so often I hardly ever use my computer.
Siri is not good at taking dictation, so please pardon any typos.☺️
