The documentary is beautiful and non judgemental. Please create more features like this one. I have been to Bulgaria many times to visit my parents - in -law, and this brought rosy memories back.
Since they also rebel against it, it tells you enough. It's perfectly ok to judge this. What do you think happens to those who don't agree with this? Do you think they have free will?
It is quite judgemental, as is the majority of Documentaries from DW, you just need to learn to read between the lines. Their western propaganda docummentaries are par excellence.
Why does Western media always have to present Bulgaria in the worst way possible?? That’s not at all what the reality looks like for the average Bulgarian(these are Roma gypsies and they’re a minority. So, their traditions have nothing to do with the centuries-old Bulgarian Christian traditions) Why don’t you make a documentary, for once, about all the ancient civilisations that have inhabited these lands or about the natural resorts that are protected by UNESCO, for example - basically something educational that will change the way Bulgaria is being perceived by the rest of the world?? I mean let’s face it, the reason why the Western world think so less of Eastern Europe is exactly because of such documentaries …
You can tell its a joke, he says it with a smile on his face. It reminds me of mexican culture, the men might joke about their wives being big but its better than modern guys. Who will up and leave no matter what the girl looks like. Besides, rosie has very nice features , you can tell she was very pretty when she was young. Still is , tbh.
Watching documentary and cultures of other people, I realized that I'm lucky enough with my job right now. Hope all the people that are having a hard time in their job will find success.
Its not about a job misi, its about how society is sustained , male and female getting married and reproducing and creating security for the old , ring any bells .

I’m now remarried to someone completely different and he loves me and takes care of me. I’ll never live for the approval of a man and I don’t want my daughters to live like that too.

@@ferencfarkas2729 That's not what I saw in this film. I saw a girl who repeatedly said she wished her life was different, but had no efficacy or autonomy in her culture whatsoever. It's a way of forcing women into slavery and servitude. It's no different to selling a breeding cow, and it values them about as much.
Family: buy new clothes for bridal market Boy: *picks the t-shirt with the exact same blue colour he is wearing but with slightly different print* i'm guessing his closet is full of blue shirts.
I worked with a guy in India who’s marriage was arranged by his and his wife’s family. The way he explained it to me was that it makes you focus on your family more and a marriage isn’t just about two people liking each other. It’s how their family gets along with yours.
I think it’s important for husband and wife to like eachother. They may have different views and want to raise their children differently from one another. Lots of fighting isn’t good for a child, it will make them stressed. Even if the parents don’t fight, if they are cold to one another it can make the child feel bad. I’m not saying arranged marriage is bad but I think it’s still important for them to like eachother.
@@MONIKASINGH-dl8iw the increase in divorce has nothing to do with the decrease in arranged marriages. In the modern world we’ve learnt it’s important to be happy and safe. In the past couples were expected to stay together even if they hated each other as getting a divorce was considered bad. Divorce rights are higher but you will probably find that more couples are happier now.
@@rachelcookie321 You are delusional.... These documentaries are extremely biased... And in community culture you have duties and responsibilities towards families and focus is on the happiness of family......How can u hate each other if both are fulfilling their duties.... They r born privileged and their ego is to the moons, they think they know everything about life which is far from reality. That's why they are depressed
I know that this is an unusual method of finding love, to those of us in western countries anyway. But I really do hope that these two young people find partners that make them happy! Teni seems like a hard worker who is prepared to support his future wife and children. He also has much respect for his family. Maria seems to be very sweet and kind and she’d make a good wife and mother. Both of these young people have so much respect and I truly wish them the best!
Well youtube not always show good stuff, but in this case it was good. But open your eyes, in a second you're watching this, in the next you're watching trash celebrity news.
This illuminates the struggle of young Roma against an age-old tradition. Their quest for love and self-determination is both inspiring and thought-provoking. Thanks to DW Documentary for sharing this compelling story of change and hope.
actually... it is not a forcing thing! there is many thing also 1. non of non-roma bulgarian would accept the roma (may there is excepts but very rare) 2. again it is not a forcing... they will meet for a few months before do anything and can say no... 3. the ''selling'' work as a trial... if the guy have serious intentions then will not sorry the money... 4. it is also mostly bulgarian roma thing... in rest of the world we dont do that for a long time... (of course there is some families but more like the 10%...)
Well my boyfriend once tried to complain that I always wear the same outfits lol but then he does it too, so I started to point this out to him and he realized that yeah he was an asshole for saying that. He doesn't care anymore, but I also made a point to change it up occasionally and so did he lol.. this is why communication is so important lol but yeah when they paid for a new Tshirt instead of a suit.....makes no sense
True but if she doesn't have a medical condition then she truly is as wide as a barn door and she knows it and doesn't give a damn about looking like one in public and no guy not even a noble person would want his healthy wife to quadruple in size, if you know one then please tell me and if you are one then you are the only one.
oh come on! you westerners or Europeans think your sentimental thoughts should apply to all other cultures. Most of these comments of "fat shaming" are applied as a form of friendly banter between family members and close friends. We don't take it to heart and get offended also the offender (in your perspectives) don't mean it in a bad way.
Thank you for this great documentary. I am originally from Afghanistan and I am aware of such traditions to have the family very involved in selecting a spouse for their children. I lived in Bulgaria for several years in Varna in the 90s and I met many Roma Bulgarians, who struggled with holding a job and making a living. Hope things are getting better for the younger Roma population.
As a Bulgarian (not Roma) I can say that once in 1990 I was offered to buy such a Roma wife. The "seller" was her brother with whom we were serving together our military service. The price was about 1500 DM, which later became 750 EUR. I usually don't like Roma women, but that one was really, really beautiful. But this was out of question - my family traditions don't permit such thing, so this never went further than a joke and exchanging some nice smiles.
good call, to make her happy you would first have to understand where she's coming from to know what she wants in life. And there is no happy marriage without a happy wife.
Thank a million Dw's authorities for making such types of documentary. I,m the regular viewers of DW documentary. Almost every next night I watch at least one or two documentary. It enhances my knowledge along with English learning
Yeah, the concept is barbaric, but fortunately it looks less so in practice. If the girl's not interested it doesn't seem like she'd be forced to marry. As they said, she can run away at least. Realistically I would hope merely voicing her objection would be the end of the conversation.
It’s kind of the same thing in western cultures. If a man has money, it opens up an entirely new catalog of women to choose from. And even more so when it comes to reputation or prowess.. for example if a girl is the daughter of a doctor, she definitely won’t be marrying a poor man.. money means a lot. The only difference is the man isn’t paying her parents. The one he’ll be paying is his wife because she will use him for his money.
I've always head the "dating market" and the "sexual market," I wonder what their devorce rate is? With about 56% now in the west and so many kids not having both parents in the house... Perhaps we should learn rather than criticize.
It is e lie 😳 The Roma are a minority in Bulgaria and live in their own mini societies. Bulgarians and Roma have different origins, language, traditions, religions, customs. In Germany, as everywhere, there are also Roma, but you do not call them Germans.

When your priority for your daughter is how rich her spouse is, rather than how he'll treat her, you know there's something seriously wrong. The same goes for guys whose priority is 1. virginity, and then physical looks. The first lasts a few seconds, and you wouldn't even know if they were or weren't, so it makes no difference. The second also fades fast, and is hardly going to ensure you're happy, even before it fades.
John Wayne you are impressed by the fact that he can tin a pot without safety equipment but those guys do far more impressive things like stealing high voltage wires while the electricity is still on and then they get chased by the polices and eventually when get caught up also get the shit beaten up out of them. And the same thing happens over and over again. So yeah those guys are crazy as hell. 🤣🤣
Used to live in Serbia for a while and i saw a lot of gypsies, so their culture is almost the same and from young age they are thought not to brake the tradition cos it will bring them bad luck in life and their god will abandon them in some way(do not know for sure sorry if im ignorant of the matter only my opinion on based what i have seen and been told), very superstitious people.
For real right... I’m sure life is better posting provocative photos on Instagram, blowing a guy in the nightclub parking lot and getting excited about how many people are following you on social media. That’s where the real happiness in life comes from.
Am I the only one who got disappointed from this documentary? Didn't get to see the bride market, didn't get to see how it's the afterwards. How is the offer and the wedding. Instead i get some social workers in another city and supermario on the roof. Pretty disappointed.
Harshajyoti Das fuckin a nailed it on the head. Oh people would talk, but if we had 6 sons it wouldn't be shit cuz we'd just cast that son the fuck out and call it a day here in wonderland
Lol, UC Berkeley and Antifa are what happens when children's happiness trumps everything. High divorce rates happen when personal happiness trumps social responsiblities and sensibilities. No one forces you to get married and they find happiness and purpose inside a system that works. Let em be, with the way feminism is going, I can see the next gen of men gettting dowries to give these "independent" women a shot.

Agreed. I get that their society makes that stuff matter, but at the same time you can teach your kids to do what is right for them while being aware of the cost of bucking tradition. As old ass adults, they’ve had enough life experience to see that tradition isn’t the best or only way to live. Just blindly forcing their kids to adhere to what public opinion says as though it is the gospel is sad and does no one good.

Tin coating copper utensils is an ancient tradition in India too and the process is called Kalai. References are found in ancient Sanskrit texts as well as those from the Mughal Empire and the East Indian Company. People doing this work are called 'Kalai wala' or 'Kalai kara'. Around a decade ago the art nearly disappeared with nonstick utensils entering our kitchens, but now the tradition is being revived. The Roma people have for long been associated with the Banjara community in India and its fascinating to find their customs so similar to those still seen in Indian villages.
These documentaries are very well done and informative. I feel as if I have travelled the corners of the world and met all matter of people of different colour and creed.

Their saying they want to uphold tradition can seem backwards and primitive until you realize that what they're really saying is that they want to maintain family relationships and community ties (I majored in cultural anthropology). The poorer the people, the more they have to rely on each other.
Does not matter. None of this matters when it comes to someone's life/feelings WHICH should be the source of any culture. To respect one another, not treat them like tools.
Possible but I might disagree with with your closing statement "the poorer the people, the more they have to rely on each other." I'm from a minority community - a pretty successful one at that - but the urge to maintain community ties in the garb of tradition, is just as strong! Nothing to do with relative wealth

I don't understand where the market really takes place. Documentary says August at Bachkovo Monastery (which is closer to Plovid than it is to Stara Zagora). Internet says the market is held in Stara Zagora on the first Saturday of Orthodox Christian Lent, this year 23rd of March 2024. Anyone can help with this?
Being Indian, I can relate to many of these customs. Although the world is changing and young people will not continue with many of these traditions much longer. Modern women are career minded and have their own goals and aspirations.
@@preoximerias7366 i agree, although I am neither from North India nor from a lower caste. Pot and pan menders were a common profession among the poor. However, genetically these people are more Eastern European than Indian in features and appearance, probably from generations of intermarriages. Plus, Indian customs do not allow for flirting/ dating rituals and today's Indian woman is very independent and career minded.
@Azack I agree with you but humans distinguish from group to group based on wealth and education. I've lived in the US for past 50 years, they have an unspoken caste system too. So does every country on the planet. Wealthy people usually do not socialize with poorer people. People generally stay within their own social group. That's just the way of the world.

they probably spend even more than that. usually their weddings last more than a fortnight. and yeah, the only thing they do is steal and sell drugs in Bulgaria. Oh and of course also breed 15 children for which they claim child support and then later unemployed with children support. Let me tell you, its great being a Bulgarian tax payer.
George Bush I guess you have a point there Mr. Bush... regarding where are the WHITE WOMEN? Especially due to the fact that as a child you were raised in the city of Compton in the Santa Fe Garden Apartments... I'm sure there wasn't a lot of so-called WHITE WOMEN available in your neighborhood at that time LOL.
It's uncanny how similar they still are to Indian culture! Arranged marriages, marrying within the community, similar family dynamics, flashy clothes, reputation being important, showing off relative wealth, etc. Even the whole thing where you can't wear the same fancy dress more than once lol
You don't want to raise your wife's confidence. Raising her confidence will mean she will think she can do better than you, and eventually cheat on you and divorce you.
It is also said so in the documentary, if you didn't watch it completely. All people that practices this for preserving their wealth or "tradition", including royalties are influenced heavily by this. The people in this documentary are like 15k, they are probably all cousins.
It is not a problem as long as cousins up to the third degree are not allowed to marry. The habit of marrying first cousins is usually the main cause of genetic problems.

I worked with a guy in India who’s marriage was arranged by his and his wife’s family.
The way he explained it to me was that it makes you focus on your family more and a marriage isn’t just about two people liking each other. It’s how their family gets along with yours.
Exectly but Nowadays Arrange Marriage is Rare and Divorce is no more Rare 😀
I think it’s important for husband and wife to like eachother. They may have different views and want to raise their children differently from one another. Lots of fighting isn’t good for a child, it will make them stressed. Even if the parents don’t fight, if they are cold to one another it can make the child feel bad. I’m not saying arranged marriage is bad but I think it’s still important for them to like eachother.
@@MONIKASINGH-dl8iw the increase in divorce has nothing to do with the decrease in arranged marriages. In the modern world we’ve learnt it’s important to be happy and safe. Just the word BRIDE MARKET sends shivers down my spine.
Seriously I feel bad making it look like women are a commodity it sucks
Yeah it’s super gross
I've always head the "dating market" and the "sexual market," I wonder what their devorce rate is? With about 56% now in the west and so many kids not having both parents in the house... Perhaps we should learn rather than criticize.

Tin coating copper utensils is an ancient tradition in India too and the process is called Kalai. Being Indian, I can relate to many of these customs. Although the world is changing and young people will not continue with many of these traditions much longer. Modern women are career minded and have their own goals and aspirations.

really? did you go to the hospital for those?
Would it be embarrassing if noone will buy you? 🙁🙁🙁
dyaki Aqui dont think anyone will like me
rsr somebody will..dont lose hope.. 😉😉
Yes, and they’ll probably be abused by their parents aswell
dyaki Aqui lol 😝
That is not necessary, nor do i find it funny. Just Bulgarians know
I have already watched a documentary about this topic & the people, so I’m excited to see more about this.
I would've preferred subtitles rather than the lifeless voice-overs.
Stalini Naufahu these people are half I iliterate I prefer vo
I can't read. So the voice over serves me well
I know. So darn weird. I would have preferred to read what they were saying.
I kind of like the voice-overs, they're relaxing
Samee 😂🤦♀️
it made me so sad when rosie said she would be embarrassed to wear a form fitting skirt :( she just wants to be comfortable in her body but her husband just has to fat shame her apparently
Nah, women in the East in general are pretty realistic about what looks good and what doesn't. They are not insecure like in the west and they can admit their faults. Men on the other hand are a different story lol..
And I'm sure she got fat giving him all those babies, and he's on camera running his fat mouth.
@Kiran Kumar Tamarapalli You have kind of a twisted view on marriage. I feel bad for you significant other.
@Kiran Kumar Tamarapalli Even if you have a sarcastic sense of humor, that is a very poor choice for a joke :/
@Kiran Kumar Tamarapalli Juding from your name, I am guessing you're Indian? Because if you are. We come from the same place and am pretty sure that joke won't fly around here.
Perhaps you surround yourself with people who aren't a good influence on you. Maybe you expose yourself to media that effects your way of thinking. I don't know your story. But the way you think isn't very nice.
Please work on what you think is humor. You might accidently hurt someone you care about one day.
I hope you get over your internalized misogyny and I wish you well.
The title is misleading, I though they were selling like in supermarket or auction. Seems more like a date gathering with wealth in the equation.
dts i don’t see it “misleading 🙂
I have suddenly fallen in love with Documentaries
They keep most of my time busy
LMBO!!!! “Enough makeup!” Dads will be dads worldwide. Lol
*sigh* I have to tell my daughters this all the time. Lol
Why dad has to stop daughter from doing make-up I don’t understand
@@howcomeseriously4401 Have you seen the Dave Chapelle schtick about "a whore's uniform"?
Because fathers know how boys look at girls and we don't want boys looking at our daughters that way.
Medic83 dads are amazing superheroes for their daughters i love my dad soo much❤️❤️thanks to all fathers for everything may your family have a happy life 😊😊
🤣😂🤣😂 facts
Daddy wants to follow traditions, that's his decision. But to force it on his own child is control. And there's a good chance that the young man will do the same with his own child. Sad.
I agree with you on the control part. But if anyone would go out and escape such tradition(s) and culture. He or she will see how other people live and is the able to make comparisons.
That's how you keep these abusive cultures going.
@Tigray Adey If you like to be controlled then you are an obedient child and you stay an obedient kid as long as your parents are alive. So whatever your parents want you to do, you do it. And one day you become the same control freak as your parents were.
Failing to accept change will cause change to force them to change
'Dad, I'm thinking of marrying a rich supermodel with a phD.'
'No, son. You need to marry an ignorant Kalaidzhi girl and produce children with genetically inherited diseases otherwise the community will gossip about me saying I can't afford to bleuh bleah blah.'
Hahaha! Underrated comment
Why does it matter. Parents need to set a better example and not worry about what the community says
😂😂😂😂
😭😭😭😭😭
Model and PhD don’t really match off
How exactly is pushing our wives and daughters into the labor market helping them? Question for the guy at 14:00
Contribution to society* bad translation. Man says it's bad since they end up uneducated and useless on their own, ain't nothing helping em
Struggling to feed his family..still drives mercedes
they don't have/pay can insurance over there at least not much.
Ohh I see...and here in my country we gotta pay import tax as well for a Mercedes...
Yeah and ironically amobg these low budget families you'll find mercedeses and the newest smartphones

$30,000 for a bride when you don't have a stove?
H Pyle but they don't say what 30,000 is worth in $
rivahkillah if its euros, it’s worth more lmao
30 000 lev is what he said not euro, if you convert that into euro it'll be half the number and ye it's still a big sum. I'm having a feeling that they just boast and lie, typical of gypsy people.
There are many ways to keep warm
they probably spend even more than that. usually their weddings last more than a fortnight. and yeah, the only thing they do is steal and sell drugs in Bulgaria. Oh and of course also breed 15 children for which they claim child support and then later unemployed with children support. Let me tell you, its great being a Bulgarian tax payer.
"Wife, you're as wide as a barn door."
Said no husband ever...except this guy.
@anonymous no they dont , ive never heard this saying in Britain
@anonymous i live west
My dad would!
@anonymous yea
Sasharie you are NOT British darlin
Uncle has the honest bluntness you only get from old men.
“Everyone wants a wife with a lighter complexion because that is more beautiful” disappointed but not surprised 😔
If you think selling off a woman is stupid. U should most definitely know that saying fair skin is considered beautiful is also stupid
Its5:53 A.M factz every tone is beautiful
Naturally. Problem? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Lol where the white women at?
George Bush I guess you have a point there Mr. Bush... regarding where are the WHITE WOMEN? Especially due to the fact that as a child you were raised in the city of Compton in the Santa Fe Garden Apartments... I'm sure there wasn't a lot of so-called WHITE WOMEN available in your neighborhood at that time LOL.
Roma's father: " 10k euros and you can take my daughter"
Les from pawn star: "I'll give you 80 euros"
more like "i can only do 20"
I'll call in an expert to take a look
GOLDENSPIKE3000 lmao , how about " well she is going to sit on the shelf for awhile , or it's a tight market for Bulgarian wives right now
GOLDENSPIKE3000 LOL
GOLDENSPIKE3000 and then will take her to an auction will sell to €100000 coz she is virgin.
Thanks You Tube for taking me to all over the world . I love watching cultures.
Welcome and i love cultures too
Me like it too
I feel so sorry for the women being paraded at the bride market, being required to look "as light-skinned as possible." It's humiliating.
It's uncanny how similar they still are to Indian culture! Arranged marriages, marrying within the community, similar family dynamics, flashy clothes, reputation being important, showing off relative wealth, etc. Even the whole thing where you can't wear the same fancy dress more than once lol
They are from India.
That's because Roma are of Indian decent
@@sugandspice9397 i know, that's what I said "how similar they STILL are". They kept a lot of their culture over the centuries.
i am from Morocco and we pretty much have almost the same traditions
Still better because whole India is not the same now...at least we Indians don't have to go to a fair to get sold.
Lmaooooo "ur as wide as a barn door" how to raise your wife's confidence 101
doesn't seem she cared a damn about it.
so you want him to lie???
Random _ User always look who’s talking
Lmfaoooo
You don't want to raise your wife's confidence. Raising her confidence will mean she will think she can do better than you, and eventually cheat on you and divorce you.
If they keep marrying within the same community won't they encounter inbreeding later somewhere down the road and develop genetic problems?
It is also said so in the documentary, if you didn't watch it completely. All people that practices this for preserving their wealth or "tradition", including royalties are influenced heavily by this. The people in this documentary are like 15k, they are probably all cousins.
no, if their population is really big
no the problem is that is about 18000 kaljiki in just 1 CITY but ther are atlees 1000000 in bulgaria and romania and maby more in serbia and macadonia
It is not a problem as long as cousins up to the third degree are not allowed to marry. The habit of marrying first cousins is usually the main cause of genetic problems.
There's another show on this, they do say that cousins and first cousins marry:/
