    That's one lovely elbow. It will look great decorating an empty corner with flowers in it.

    Pretty cool, with the 💜 shape pith area, you call it you heart bowl!!😊, i too like the bark left on it. At first it looked scary to watch you start with weird chunky shape, but it came out beautiful. I thought it would cause some Rough bumps with your knife, spinning like that.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Steve. Yes that pith added a special treat to it.
      It actually turned pretty easy which is a good thing.

    It's so cool to have a bowl made out of wood from your own property. This Oak is well aged, just like it's turner! LOL! I'm glad you turned it, as is. I agree with you, to see it now as you have seen it for the past 11 years is really neat, only now, it's all shined up just like it was on it's best day overlooking your house. Great memories, great shiny new bowl! Great job, my friend! Keep'em coming! 😊

      Thank you very much Phil. If the darn thing had not started lifting our driveway it may still be there. But it also makes it easier to back in our home away from home as well.
      It was such an odd piece to pick up and look at. Funny thing is this is what I have always wanted to. I was just afraid of it getting all messed up looking.
      Thanks for watching my friend,
      Gary

      Nice job Gary, love the original shape and bark, always good to turn a piece from your own property. Thanks for sharing.
      All the best to you.

    I still want to find a nice elbow sometime to make a full bark exterior bowl. It would probably require some clever cutting and sawing to eventually end up with a rather shallow elliptic bowl with a very thick bottom, but it should look cool.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes is would look very cool Judith.

    Nice job. That’s what I like about woodturning. You start with a piece of wood not knowing what you’ll end up with. Sometimes it just a pile of shavings. 👍

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true. Reminds me of a joke. One wood worker says: Sometimes I make something nice..most of the time I make sawdust!

    Really nice work Gary.
    You certainly are a very accomplished wood turner. Finish is a little too glossy for me , I prefer beeswax and oil to give a satin finish, particularly with natural edge bowls, personal choice though.

    The Oak grain stands out well in this piece sometimes leaving so much bark really works as with this one, like Phil you kept the nature with the elbow.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Lewis. It is so hard to decided how much bark to leave and how much shape to cut away to have less.

    When you had the raw piece in your hands, I was picturing what I would do with it. My vision was very different but I really like your final product. I’ve often thought if you had 5 pieces of identical wood and you gave one to 5 woodturners, how cool it would be to compare the end results. You have to have the eye of the artist to see what lives within. You sir, are one of those artists. Nice work! 🥸👍👀✅❗️

      Hello Papa that piece of oak tuned out great I really enjoy watching you and your friend Phil Anderson turning wood and trying to leave it in the natural state that it grew in. You never know what kind of beauty lies in a piece of wood ,it gets revealed as it takes shape .Keep up the good work .👍

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much Henry. It is nice to be able to leave some of the tree when turning. Phil is the master of that.

    Beautiful! The grain is exceptional, but then, too, it IS oak, after all. Nicely turned!
    As for boring grubs, I've had a dedicated microwave in the shop for a few years and use it frequently. Currently, I've got several pieces of infested European birch wood. Paraphrasing now, "I just love the smell of nuked grubs in the morning!" 😂🤪

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Dave. Oak from the ol homestead is hard to beat.
      After we got a new microwave I was going to keep the old but it was kind of small. So we donated it. I do not use the new one we have in the house. If I know what is good for me I will keep it that way.
      You love the smell of grubs in the morning LOL
      That is a good line and I smelled the other stuff many times. I did not love it much though.

    Gary I have several elbows like that in my garage. I for the life of me couldn't figure out what to do with them. Now I know thanks as always with your weekly videos, because otherwise. Very nice piece Gary. I understand about picking something up and the light just catches your eye and makes you focus on what is something there. You can finally see what that wood is showing you. I have had something across the shop on the floor for along time. Just one day everything looked like wow I can do that with that piece of wood. Thanks for sharing. I hope I see you on the next one.

      Thanks so much Albert. Sometimes I have a piece sitting out where I can see it and can not get my mind off an idea. This was somewhere else and I was looking for a piece to turn and saw this one and it just came to me. I had wanted to do it like this before but I could not get myself to take the chance and maybe ruin it. This time there was no changing my mind. Like you say when you see it is time to do it.
