So, as a huge fan of Zero, Iris, and X4 in general, I gotta nitpick one point, at 10:28 Zero didn't kill Iris. Most players attack Iris repeatedly to force her to eject the crystal that transformed her, which is the actual weak point of the fight. However, if during the battle against her, Zero is in critically low health, Iris ejects the crystal on her own and this allows Zero to win the fight without ever attacking her. Despite this, she will die anyway. Why? Well, a bit of backstory not presented in X4 itself, but referenced in many spinoffs and guide books since, that crystal is Colonel's memory chip. Iris and Colonel were supposed to be one Reploid but their personalities were too contradictory to function properly. Japanese books at the time (translated by Servbot20) describe Iris as "out of control" and suffering from "rejection symptoms" from the chip. Fun fact, in the mobile gacha game "Mega Man X DiVE," the character "Iris -another-" appears to represent what would have happened if Iris had been able to install Colonel's chip properly. She should be released in the overseas version in a couple of months, but be warned, the gacha odds are not pleasant. We also saw a postmortem encounter with Iris in the 3DS crossover game, "Project X Zone," in which Zero answers the X4 meme question, and Iris gets the chance to offer a more proper goodbye. It was real heartfelt stuff. Love the artwork for this video. The thumbnail is hilarious, and the "bro beards" for both X and Zero at the end were just perfect.
Love X4. Probably the most solid entry in the series, and always a good time when I go back to it. Thanks for the great video Jirard! So, X6 completion then? 😂
Love this game so much. Split mushroom and Zero’s first stage are my favorite songs💕 also favorite bad voice acting bit in this is when Zero very weirdly says Iris with almost an Irish inflection.
It’s funny that Jirard’s Megaman experience is basically the same as mine. I played the first, didn’t get to play 2 or 3, then played 4. I also consider 1 and 4 to be basically the peaks of the franchise, the best of the best. One thing I like about the story is that for the first time we see “Maverick” be used to describe a Reploid not affected by the virus. They choose of their own free will to not be pawns, to want their own nation with their own rules, and get branded with a label used to describe what are essentially mentally ill terrorists. It adds a bit more complexity to the situation, because what the Repliforce is doing is not good(or at least, the way they’re going about it. Sure, Sky Lagoon was a frame job, but they didn’t exactly do anything to dissuade that idea and instead prepared for war), but at the same time X and Zero are basically fighting against a group of people who just want their own independence.
I say this as a shameless fanboy who knows this game's ups and downs intimately... Please be gentle. 😂 Also nice theme to open with. Edit: Several things. Thank you for not just drowning the game in its mems like god and everyone else and actually talking about what it did for the gameplay of the series and Zero's recognition across gaming in general. Thank you for also actually addressing that Repliforce was infiltrated with bad actors under Sigma's influence. I don't know how but time has changed how people talk about this game. I see a lot of referring to Repliforce as "Robot Nazis" and that's it. Basically you talk about this game like someone who actually has played it extensively and doesn't just know it for its infamy and that's greatly appreciated.
X4 was so amazing. It’s the first game that I was able to introduce gaming to my nephew to. We played together every time he came over and he loved trying to solo the bosses. This game is still so special to the two of us. And we both bought the x collections the second they came out. It was so great to play it again. Especially to see how far we’d come as gamers. Awesome to see a Completionist video for this again.
Mega Man X is a VERY important game series for me (specifically X) and MMX4 was HUGE to me. so the moment i saw this video posted i clicked so hard i killed my trackball mouse megaman x and sonic the hedgehog were the games that built the foundation of my IMMENSE special interest in video games. but one of the main categories for my special interest is game OSTs. i have been listening to them since, well...i played mega man x6. i missed out on a lot of the scene at the time, and say what you will about mega man x6, I still love it and THAT SOUNDTRACK SLAPS i left the mega man x games on in the background while i did other stuff. game OSTs are insanely important to me and a PASSION of mine. mega man x games are a core part of my childhood and i love that jirard holds the same sentiment and that he can provide those serotonin boosts through his videos
Say what you want about the voice acting but it's an Oscar worthy performance and worthy of being apart of The Criterion Collection compared to Last Alert on Turbografx 16. Although Last Alert is possibly the funniest voice acting in a video game ever so it does have that going for it.
I actually don’t disagree with Jirard’s thoughts. This game is my favorite in the X series if not all of the Megaman games. I actually have a tradition on my channel where I complete Megaman X4 every single year to appreciate it and bring back some nice memories.
@@markxv2267 I respectfully disagree. With games like X6 and X7, there’s a lot to appreciate with X4. The level design, the music, the fact that you can play as both protagonists for the first time, and the replay value for the extra costumes. At the end of it all, the acting is all I see wrong with the game. And in that case, just play the original Japanese dub because it sounds way better. Edit: This is an unpopular opinion but I feel like X3 was even bad because it felt rushed. The boss levels were VERY short, the music was subpar at best (aside from the Doppler stages), and it was really hard even with the boss weaknesses. Just felt way off compared to the previous 2 entries
That's not actually X4's story. HUMANS created Repliforce to defend against Mavericks and other such disasters and things. When the Sky Garden was attacked and crashed into a major city, killing thousands, they were blamed from mere proximity. So they decided to secede and try to just *go somewhere else*, but the humans ordered the Maverick Hunters to hunt them down because they were deemed Mavericks. Colonel and General weren't actually Maverick, they were just DEEMED Maverick in order for the Hunters to be sent after them, and because they weren't listening to the humans who wanted them dead because the thing they were guarding got attacked.
Mega Man X is my childhood. I can't remember how many times I've completed the X series. Although my absolute favorite is X3, X4 comes closely second. I just hope there will be a X9, X10 or so on. Please Capcom!!!!
X4 is still to this day the only Megaman X game that I know front and back, despite never beating Sigma in any of my runs lol. It is always the form after normal reaper Sigma that trips me up as either X or Zero and while I do wish that X's story didn't feel like nothing in comparison to Zero's or that Zero's relationship with Iris should have been fleshed out more so I could care more or that Sigma haven't been the main villain again, it is still one of my favorites in the series next to X1 and X8.
I've always found X4's sound track to be... lacking. That's not to say it isn't good, because it really is. The problem is that it isn't... Sticky, for lack of a better word. It doesn't stay with me. Chill Penguin, Storm Eagle, Magna Centipede, Gravity Beatle; basically any song from the previous games are just a mention away from playing in my head. But X4, I always have to think back and try to recall the songs. They don't stick with me.
Still don't get the few people that think the ost in x4 is good. Every track sounds like the same 4 synth notes played over and over again while the previous games had straight up bangers. As of now I like some x4 tracks but only in covers or arrangements that make them sound good and because they grew on me, not because I liked them from the start. It's really not up to X's Ost standards
I just love X4 to death. The beautiful spritework, environments, level design, platforming, bosses, and armors are so masterfully done. Zero is a perfect compliment to X's playstyle and a fresh and fun way to play Mega Man, one of the best additions by far to a Mega Man game. And while I know people often criticize the music, I really like it. Each piece matches each stage and scenario and there's just an overall feeling that is so different from any game in the franchise (X4 credits theme is my favorite Mega Man credits theme). The anime cutscenes feel special being only in this one entry, and while the English voice acting is bad, A. it's laughably bad so I can't hate it that much, B. the Legacy Collection has the Japanese version and the Japanese voice acting which sounds great.
Yep, Mega Man X4 is great, love that game, might be my favorite in the series. Loved playing as Zero, loved the cutscenes, all of them. I think everyone who makes fun of them is crazy, Zero's line delivery when Iris dies is perfection, no notes, you're just a bad person. But seriously, it's a pretty nostalgic fave for me. When I got a PlayStation for the first time, the first game I bought for it was Mega Man X4. It kicked my ass for so long, that final Sigma gauntlet of a fight is insane, but my friend and I were able to beat it together and it was amazing.
This makes me feel super nostalgic. X4 is the first Mega Man I ever played and it's still my favorite. Also I love the order he chose for the bosses. That's how I always go through the game as well.
I emulated them up until x7 and ive got to say x4 and x8 are the ones that give me that comfort food feeling when i play them. x1 is the origin, its gritty and fun but theres just something x4 and x8 brings that really stands out in the series. im glad the legacy collection came out for better or for worse because of console fx varations for certain ones i.e the sega saturn version of x4, but still 20 bucks or so for the full series (except command mission) is a good deal last time i checked it was around 6-8 hundred bucks to get the original releases from x-x8
I played X4 before I played X, so I'm a bit more nostalgic for it. I remember taking the ride armor to fight magma dragoon and thinking I was slick for cheating the fight. Also, wow that thumbnail.
Man, the memories I have of this game. I remember first seeing this title in Hollywood Video and going "They made a _fourth_ one!?" I remembered liking the first three X games and rented X4 that day. When I played the game, I LOVED IT. Zero was playable, his saber combat was awesome, he had a girlfriend (I absolutely adored Iris), there were animated cutscenes...I don't know if any Mega Man game ever left an impact on me as much as X4 did. After playing X4, I used to daydream about the series all the time at school.
MMX4 was a legendary game from my childhood. My one friend who lived 400 miles away from us had a Playstation, and Megaman X4. I knew Megaman X inside out (mostly) and to go from X1 on SNES to X4 on Playstation, with all of the beautiful and glorious sprite animation was an absolute spectacle.
Ugh the music during the credits always makes me want to cry!! It is my absolute favorite bop from ROCK MAN, you know the game themed around getting you hyped with rock music? Lol yet my favorite piece is the slow, beautifully emotional credit song 😂
I love corny VA work so Megaman X4 was a gem right off the bat for me. In terms of gameplay, I rank it just under the original as one of my favorites in the series. The stages and bosses were all memorable, and the story was pretty good. I loved the twists each campaign had! Great fun, one of the highest points in the series.
I don't want the megaman series to be a gem of the past. I wanna see this series go back to its glory days, such as this game. I really hope Capcom does this game more good.
MegaMan X4 was my first game from the MegaMan series. This game had such an impact on me as a kid that because of this series I chose my career path as a software engineer.
Nice to see MegaMan X4. I really loved the original version, and nowadays we have a mod that changes the translation to something more close to the original japanese, but the original is already great, and big respect for the voice actors. Yes, some lines are strange, but that what makes it special (or just funny)
Um. What mod are you talking about? Is it only on emulators I'm guessing? I legit wouldn't know. I only play Rockman X4 now a days cause of the shitty translation and voices.
@@1122markj the one I was referring put japanese audio with new more faithful English translations. I already saw people putting it on the console, but I used it on a emulator
This was my first Mega Man, and will always be my favorite. My preferred route is Web Spider to Storm Owl, that way I can get the Buster upgrade ASAP. Then I'll hit Cyber Peacock and follow that weakness route
What a surprise, I just re-played the X story line in X4 yesterday. I did it Buster only and randomized the boss stages (closed my eyes and shuffled the L-Stick around), and yes, it's still a lot of fun. The only thing I would note is that it is one of, if not the easiest game in the Megaman X series. I know the half-way transition point was because of limitations back during the PS1 era, but having a life refill after the half way point does reduce the threat of the mid-bosses somewhat (I'm thinking of you, water-goop machine in Spark Mandrill stage). Still, I'd say because of it's difficulty factor (or lack thereof) makes this a good game to just get back and jump in to. And the music was definitely banger: I sometimes have the soundtrack playing in the background while I'm playing some other game.
Fun story. Around 1996, when I was still living in the US, I came back here to Taiwan for a vacation. I picked this game up for the PC in Taiwan. Fun fact, the dark X and dark Zero codes are different on the PC version than on the PSX version. Second fun fact, that game came with trading cards. One for web spider and I forget on the second one. I carried those cards with me for years because of how cool they were. Suggestion: try the japanese version of the game. IMO it that extra *umph* that makes it worthwhile. 1) The bosses have phrases they say before the fight. Not like text dialogue, but actual voices. 2) The intro has a different soundtrack. 3) The cut scenes are much better acted. I really need to get off my a*s and mode this game...
The only reason i have any nostalgia with this amazing Mega Man X game is bc i lived with my Aunt and Uncle who had a playstation. I've never owned a playstation even till this day. Idk i guess I'm a loyal Nintendo guy. I remember going to block buster and seeing X4 and asking my Aunt to rent it. I loved it and rented several times. It was the second X game i could actually beat as a 8 year old young gamer with X 2 being the other. I owned X 2 so i could practice a lot with that X game. I always got to Sigma when i rented X 1 and X 3 but could never beat him in neither. It's odd thinking i found X 1 and X 3 so hard bc now i can beat the first 4 X titles no issues at all now but X 4 was so badass to me and still is simply bc u can play it 4 different ways and Zero is fir more than just a Z saber like X 3. Great review Jirard.
This was my first megaman game when it came out, i was probably like 12 or something, i never noticed how bad the voice acting was until all the memes came out. I thought i had some sort of mandela effect going on but its hard to believe i thought it was good LMAO
I grow up with PS1 era megaman games and they are still my fav megaman games specially X4 also shout out their mods, they change the translation and make important gameplay teawks to 5 and 6 and also the Japanese voice acting for 4 is actually amazing, so mod that too
Haven't even watched the video yet but I had to gush. This is the first Mega man game I've ever played and one of my favorite games of all time. First game I've ever completed too. I love this game and know it like the back of my hand. (Not that I know that much.) The soundtrack is so damn good (Slashbeast stage was a B-B-B-BANGER). Someone should've been arrested for making gameplay that smooth and good my lord. The cheat codes for X and Zero were always a fun time. This game was and still is so much fun to go back too. I can't say enough good things. Zero and X are GOATS
So I knew growing up Megaman X4 and its sequels existed, but they felt mythical to me. I played X 1-3 on emulators and could never find a PS1 emulator that could work and since I was in a Nintendo family, I didn't have any way to play. Still haven't. Maybe I'll give this mythical game a shot now that I'm an adult with a PS5!
I didn't play X4 when it first released so it wasn't as impactful for me as it was for everyone else in the comments section (and Girard!) The first three games in the series remain my favorite. X4 was the beginning of the end for me.
Hey man! I’ve only just started to comment on videos, but your channel is what got me into TH-cam over five years ago. Now the platform is my primary source of entertainment.
I like the Donkey Kong and Wild Arms ost inserts. MMX4 was clearly made with passion, unlike it’s sucessors. It is really remarkable, it is really the best.
Christmas 1998, finally got a ps1, had 20 bucks extra from xmas money, went to the malls gamestop/ebgames/insert whatever it was, and there it is a used copy of MMX4. $24, ouch, My grandmother took me to the mall that day, and she happily handed me a 10 before i even asked. Cool thing my grandma was an old school NES gamer and played with me as a kid, young teen me she still got me :). Greatest gift she ever helped me get.
I remember being late into being a Megaman X fan. I didn't find it until I was 21 but when I found X4,I fell in love with it to the point where every time I could put a clan tag,I'd always but MMX4 because it became my favorite Megaman game of all time. I need to finish them all but X4 has put the bar so high,I don't think it's going to be removed any time soon
Probably the same as the other comments, this will always be my favorite of the series, and the one I have played the most. I originally played it on PC back in the day, so I had instant access to all the cutscene movies without even playing the game. This game gave me hope that there could've been an anime using the movie animation, but sadly it never happened.
When you came to my city in 2017 for Retropalooza, I wanted to ask you about X4 since it was a big part of my own childhood. Glad you enjoy the game as much as I did. Keep up the great work!
Back when I was a kid when I still had the PS1, I didnt had a memory card, but I always keep going back to X4 and never cared of not saving. I just love how amazing it was and it got me being a megaman fan. I never did beat the game til years later when I did the ultimate armor cheat and I never cared about breaking the game. I always had a wonderful time and X4 is no exception.
X4 is my favorite, no competition. Mostly because of the gameplay, but also because of the art design. The music perfectly captures the mood and set the vibe perfectly, too. At least for most of the game. I could go on and on about why I love X4! At the same time I totally get why people crap on it, and prefer 1-3. The Completionist nails it, essentially

I say this as a shameless fanboy who knows this game's ups and downs intimately... Please be gentle. 😂
Also nice theme to open with.
Easily one of my most favorite mega man x games along with X2, X3, X6,X7, and X8.
Mega Man X is a VERY important game series for me (specifically X) and MMX4 was HUGE to me. so the moment i saw this video posted i clicked so hard i killed my trackball mouse
megaman x and sonic the hedgehog were the games that built the foundation of my IMMENSE special interest in video games. but one of the main categories for my special interest is game OSTs. i have been listening to them since, well...i played mega man x6. i missed out on a lot of the scene at the time, and say what you will about mega man x6, I still love it and THAT SOUNDTRACK SLAPS
i left the mega man x games on in the background while i did other stuff. game OSTs are insanely important to me and a PASSION of mine. mega man x games are a core part of my childhood and i love that jirard holds the same sentiment and that he can provide those serotonin boosts through his videos
ALSO THAT ANIME INTRO ALWAYS GOT LIL BABY ME SOOOOOO HYPE
Recompleting X4 Sigma's voice out of nowhere " Are you ready for round two?!"
Say what you want about the voice acting but it's an Oscar worthy performance and worthy of being apart of The Criterion Collection compared to Last Alert on Turbografx 16. Although Last Alert is possibly the funniest voice acting in a video game ever so it does have that going for it.
I remember playing Mega Man X4 on Gamecube with the X collection. Most of my family played X4 because we loved the art style and how cool/fun it was.
I actually don’t disagree with Jirard’s thoughts. This game is my favorite in the X series if not all of the Megaman games. I actually have a tradition on my channel where I complete Megaman X4 every single year to appreciate it and bring back some nice memories.
me either and that's awesome you have a tradition on your channel where you complete Mega Man X4 every year to appreciate it
X4 is the weakest entry though
Zero in the thumbnail represents me when I finally saw you made video to X4.
Mega Man X is my childhood. I can't remember how many times I've completed the X series. Although my absolute favorite is X3, X4 comes closely second. I just hope there will be a X9, X10 or so on. Please Capcom!!!!
Unfortunately Capcom don't have ideas on Mega Man games so it up in the air.
Gunvolt and LAIX took the MMX torch and keeps it alive and going.
X4 is still to this day the only Megaman X game that I know front and back, despite never beating Sigma in any of my runs lol. It is always the form after normal reaper Sigma that trips me up as either X or Zero and while I do wish that X's story didn't feel like nothing in comparison to Zero's or that Zero's relationship with Iris should have been fleshed out more so I could care more or that Sigma haven't been the main villain again, it is still one of my favorites in the series next to X1 and X8.
same, i only did it once without using savestates and these days, i really just stop after the first form and dont even try.
if there's a new easy mode, it really only had to make that one boss easier
I believe Zero's black armor is not just cosmetic, but it also alows you to cut trhough some enemie's bullets
Magma Dragoon is basically a shoto which is dope. Also whoever edited this is a legend for using Wild Arms music.
9:08 I mean, who can blame them if they do nazi salutes?
So proud of him for getting through a whole video without calling any of the tracks a "banger" when mentioning the good music.
Probably because music in X4 is legit bland and boring lol.
I can’t wait to see what becomes of this recurring bit where Jirard is both himself and Alex
Maverick Hunter X made me feel the same way you describe this game, graphics on the PSP looked gorgeous
I love the writing of this episode. The 4th wall breaking jokes are perfect.
The original MMX4 video was my first Completionist video. I’ve been waiting for the New Game + for so long, happy to see it
Best X game in the series (imo)
My first PS1 game and technically the first one I remember playing before Pokémon. Thanks Dad for noticing it looked cool!! Miss ya pops
What mod? How do I play it? Does it use new English voicovers? Can I put the subtitles of it overtop of the superior voices of the actual original?
X4*
@@Jackattack359 thx
That thumbnail. It’s just perfect.
I always start with Web Spider, too. Super easy boss, and a sensible first stop for collecting armor pieces as you go.
I still love that intro.
Great video, shame you couldn't keep the joke from Jet Stingray, that speech interrupted got me every time!! :D
What What am I one hundred percenting for!
I cant lie X and X4 are my go to megaman games they are my 10/10 games of all time lol
I insta clicked this video as soon as I saw it. Where tf is Megaman X9! What…What am I fighting fooooooor!
The only Mega Man I’ve ever played and finished. Thanks GameShark
“WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR”!!!
- Zero
This was my first megaman game when it came out, i was probably like 12 or something, i never noticed how bad the voice acting was until all the memes came out. I thought i had some sort of mandela effect going on but its hard to believe i thought it was good LMAO
Mega Man X4 will always be My favorite Mega Man game as well as My favorite PlayStation 1 and Sega Saturn game
Those cut scenes in 97 were epic.
MMX4 is IMO the best X game and my favorite Mega Man game. I can't express how happy I am that you're finally covering it.
I grow up with PS1 era megaman games and they are still my fav megaman games specially X4 also shout out their mods, they change the translation and make important gameplay teawks to 5 and 6 and also the Japanese voice acting for 4 is actually amazing, so mod that too
I really loved the knot to Zero's fighting game appearances (MvC and TvC) based off his X4 version
I play the Saturn version. It's tough to beat the original X, but X4 is right there with it to me.
X4 is the one that welcome me to Megaman franchise
Aww man, this game brings me so many happy memories from my teenage years. We had it good guys, we had it good.
x4 and x5 are my fav megaman games, they were such a big part of my early gaming when i was 4 years old, i can still remember playin
And hey at least we got DiVe where we can play as Iris and she gets to live again
Do you have any video talking about RetroAchievements? If not, it would be nice to hear your opinion about it
Hey man! I’ve only just started to comment on videos, but your channel is what got me into TH-cam over five years ago. Now the platform is my primary source of entertainment.
My only issue with X4 is, aside from the horrendous voice acting, that all the maverick bosses have spark mandrill syndrome
That thumbnail is a thing of beauty.
MMX4 is one of my favorite megaman games as well!
I was literally just watching the Metal Sonic vs Zero Death Battle, talk about timing.
"Rutabaga Man" wouldn't be a Reploid. They'd be a Robot Master, due to the use of "Man" as their second name.
I actually recently completed this game from the Legacy collection. I never had this for PSone, I only have X5.
Doing Magma Dragoon first as Zero, without ride armour, is such an intense and fun experience, and anyone who hasn’t tried it yet needs to.
Mega Man X4 was my first PlayStation game, not my favorite but still good. X and X2 were my favorites and, in my opinion, the best
There is a surprising lack of comments mentioning the amazing Pepsi Man shirt Jirard is wearing. It needs more recognition!
