Majora's Mask is the Yin and Yang of Hope and Pain

  • The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask is one of the few direct sequel Zelda games and one of the creepiest, most somber of entries in the series. Besides the iconic items we are familiar with in Link's inventory we also got a collection of masks for powers that enable new abilities for puzzles and affected how NPCs treat you depending on which mask you wear. In this Completionist episode I played both versions of the game; the classic ROM and the Majora's Mask 3D release. Releasing Majora's Mask on the Nintendo 3DS led to some quality of life improvements, such as displaying a map on the lower screen and the much appreciated improved time control that allows me to jump to a specific hour. AND they added what every good game needs: a fishing game! But what makes Majora's Mask truly unique is not it's masks or amazing 1 year crunch time of development, but the thematic elements of hope and sadness and how they are all part of the healing process. A game that dives into empathy and leaves you thinking to some of the larger elements of life. For all that and more, let's jump into my Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask review!

      Not only that but you can tell, from a completionist run especially, that Link actually cares about helping them.
      A lot of the time Link has to get to know the person's whole life, their interests, daily routine, everything about them, to help them out. Link becomes everyone's best friend to come and help them.

      @@Midnight_Rein The best game design is self evident: if YOU care about the NPCs, and start doing things for them, then the attitudes of the NPCs towards your character reflect that. Because YOU are the character! And from what I remember, MM does that a lot.

      This was less of an “it's funny because it's ridiculous” joke, and more of an “it's funny because it HAD to have really happened” joke.
      It's weird how the human brain can sometimes find humor in a situation becoming jarringly serious.

    • @PomLamb

      Majora's mask story definitely hinges on a balanced level of unfortunate and fortunate fates which
      are highlighted with quotes such as "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" to "Whenever there is a meeting, a parting is sure to follow. However, that parting need not last forever... Whether a parting be forever or merely for a short time... That is up to you."
      The message of this game is that no matter how bad things get in life there is always a way to try to make the best of it. Nothing last forever so enjoy what you can with the little time you are given.
      Majora's mask also relays a message that even in most bleak moments where there is hope even if the light at the end of the tunnel seems unreachable. It is a great concept that goes beyond the game itself and in a strange way it becomes a valuable life lesson.

    A slightly nerdy fact, but the Song of Healing is written in what's called the Lydian Mode.
    When a lot of people hear music they associate the sound of Major chords as being happy ('Walking On Sunshine', 'Lovely Day', 'Jump' etc), and Minor chords being sad ('Thrill is Gone', Ain't No Sunshine', 'Stan' etc). But rarely is music this black and white, and many people compose songs in Modes, which are variation of Major and Minor scales.
    The Lydian Mode that 'Song of Healing' is written in is a Major Mode, but the 4th note of that scale (the first note you hear in 'Song of Healing') is actually unusual within a normal Major song, making it Lydian. This also means that everytime we come to that first chord there's only a partial resolution in sound, so the song never quite resolves.
    This is how I think the track musically has this beautiful sombre and melancholic feel, it's not quite downright depressing, but it's also not quite happy, leaving you in this eerie middle-ground that is forever cycling without resolve.
    Super music geek stuff, but I've loved this song all my life and when I teach music harmony it's one of my go to songs for helping me expressing how music can be so much more than black and white emotion.

    Probably the saddest part of the game is the end when link goes back into the lost woods alone looking for Navi which the previous game explained that anyone who enters the lost woods without a fairy to guide them ends up being lost forever becoming a skull kid or stalfos. There's always been speculation about what actually happened to Link or if it was even real to begin with as the somber tone of the Song of Healing has a lot to do with the acceptance of death and moving on, which is a process of healing through the stages of grief. The Irony being Link was always there for people but ended up alone in the Lost Woods.

    • @LOS18
      @LOS18 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NEETKitten Okay, hear me out first, but are you sure it lasted? Link had a fairy when the Great Deku Tree died so the blessing didn't need to be there. And I realize that this isn't confirmed, but one fan theory is that Link is dead in Majora's Mask, so if he is, it would explain why he didn't need a fairy while in the Lost Woods.
      I mean, looking at it from the perspective of the Zelda Timeline, Link being dead doesn't make sense and especially not when considering that Twilight Princess Link is the descendent of Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask Link (I mean unless...). We don't know how long it takes for the Lost Woods to turn people into Skull Children or Stalfos or whatever they become, so maybe Link was in the process of becoming one, ended up in Termina (which isn't the Lost Woods so the curse wouldn't apply), saved Termina, and then after leaving becomes the Hero's Shade (who looks like a Stalfos).
      Sorry for this being so long, I just had an idea and ended up writing way too much.

    This review made me realize something. My dad passed away in september 1999. I was 12. We shared the love of Zelda games, so much so that when our original pre order of OoT was sold out, he went out of state to find another copy(he had cancer at this point so he knew his time was limited). Majoras mask was the first zelda game released after he was gone. I didnt realize at the time how dark and emotional it was due to my own feelings. But after watching this review and hearing "They realize that a union, however brief, is more valuable than dying alone." really hit my heart and brought me back to that time of grief and healing. I will cherish this review more than you will know. Thank you.

      That’s the gut punch reality of the game, and one of the prevailing themes of MM. But never forget that while Link is too far removed for him to help the poor soul of the Butler’s son, you help Darmani move on as a ghost, helping him find acceptance when his soul is tormented by his failure, then you help Mikau come to terms with his own mortality in his last moments, helping him find peace with his dying breath, and, finally, he saves Pamela’s father, finally breaking the cycle of death, and in a way, redeeming himself as a hero, because though he “Saved Hyrule”, he still was responsible for the deaths of everyone in Castle Town, something that, while fixed, might have tormented him up to that point.

      @animeartist888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Same. The second I saw that happen on Odolwa, I was enraged. And worse yet is how they used the eyeballs to force you to beat the boss in a specific way. It used to be that you could beat Odolwa with bombs or arrows or sword and not even use the Deku. But the 3D version requires you to stun him with the Deku. Same issue for having to switch back to human Link with Goht and the second half of the Twinmold fight. I heavily regret buying MM3D as I sincerely doubt I will ever touch it again. First time I have ever literally thrown a controller (or console) in anger and frustration was that very Twinmold fight, and I'd really rather not experience that ever again.

  • @jpfoland01
    @jpfoland01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I’d call the changing of the boss fights by adding huge eye weak points a big strike against the remake. It takes away the player’s autonomy of fighting the bosses however you like (like with the Goht fight you can chase it as a Goron or stand in one spot and take pot shots at it). Not to mention it’s just extra padding to have to wait for a specific weak spot to appear versus just being able to attack the boss directly.

    • @IonSquared
      @IonSquared 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Strong disagree and I hate that this is seemingly a popular opinion now. The revamped fights are so much more interesting to me. The original Twinmold is 45 seconds of mashing the sword and nothing more... What a disrespectful conclusion to the best Zelda dungeon of all time. The new Twinmold fight is a multi-phase epic worthy of that honor. The remake integrates masks into the battles perfectly; in the original, they were useless...after a dungeon in which you spent the whole time using them. And sure, you could hit the bosses with any item in the original, but what would the point be of using anything but the sword? Pointless, weaker options are hardly enticing.
      The only thing I can say in defense of the original bosses is they are more "unique to Zelda" for not really having weakpoints/the whole boss itself being a weakpoint. But uniqueness in the series does not a good fight make.
      E: Oh, and also, Fierce Deity Link not being able to wail on all the bosses anymore because of their changes is also a point for the original. So there's that (but it's still no contest to me).

    • @callinater6133
      @callinater6133 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IonSquared I suppose the point of contention is that the original had more ways of fighting bosses while the remake’s bosses were more restrictive but also more structured (they don’t have ways of being cheesed).
      Having only played the remake I don’t think the weak points are that bad but I could imagine odolwa being more fun to fight.
      And hey, the bosses being more challenging overall works with the game’s vision of being an intentionally challenging game.

    It makes total sense why this would be such a good completion game for the completionist. To do that, you have to do all these sidequests and collect all the masks, and along the way of doing that you connect with all these people on such a deep and interesting level.
    Plus you get one of the most badass completion bonuses ever in the form of the Fierce Deity's Mask.

    My brother and I know that feeling when we first played this game. We had only played Link to the Past and bits of Ocarina of Time at our grandma's house because we didn't have an N64 yet. When Christmas of 1998 rolled around, Majora's Mask was one of the first games we got with our new N64. We were just absolutely floored by how different Majora was from what we had experienced with Zelda so far.

I myself played through the game when I was younger but didn't understand half the despair hiding in this game but growing up and replaying it recently shows just how grim this game really was. I loved ocarina of time more when i was younger but now majoras mask is definitely my favorite of all time.

    This is my absolute favorite Zelda game, and by extension, one of my favorite games of all time. This is the game with the most beautiful side quests ever. You actually do these quests because you actually care for the Npcs. You get to know their stories and their pasts, and you do your best to do something good for them before the world ends. The plot of this game is very sad and ominous, and the atmosphere is fantastic.
    I love the fact Termina is basically an alternate dimension of Hyrule, with many characters resembling the ones you already know and love.
    I love the gameplay diversity given by the mask system. I love getting all the masks. I love the dungeons and their complexity.
    And, as Jirard himself said, I will never finish this game without completing it 100%, because that’s the true nature of the game. I always 100% when I replay it and I will always do it.

    I really want to see the transformation masks return in Breath of the Wild 2. As a LoZ mechanic it’s relatively unique and exploring the environments of Hyrule as races best suited to them, Goron on Death Mountain, Rito in the sky, Zora in the rivers, lakes and ocean, would add a level of immersion while opening up more of the already expansive Hyrule that’s in the original game.

    Majora's Mask is one of the few games that I feel gets better every time you replay it. Most games that I love are pretty constant in their appeal, in that my thoughts and opinions of them aren't much different after a replay than they were after my first completion of them. But with Majora's Mask there's always something that I can see in the game that I never thought of before and makes every experience different and unique, no matter how subtle. This game is a masterpiece and one of the best games ever created, Nintendo or otherwise.

    As a kid when I got the 64 my dad picked up OOT for me and since I was to young and didn’t know how to play it. I watched my older cousin beat it. It was a great memory so I promised myself that the next Zelda game that comes out I will beat it fully and oh boy I didn’t know what I got myself into when My dad picked up Majora’s mask. I remember when I started it how scared I was for each and every turn the game took but even though I was scared and there were times I had to take a break because it got to heavy for my young child mind I kept pushing through. As a kid I felt I had an obligation to help all these people and I would genuinely get sad when I had to use the song of time. When I finally completed it and received the FD mask I was so happy I legit felt that everything I went through was worth it. This game will always hold a special place in my heart and every time I look back at it I smile because it’s something I will never experience again but a memory I will never forget.

    When you take into account that Link had just gone through hell to save a kingdom, only to be left forgotten and alone as his last friend - the only one aware of the hardships and sorrows he had to go through - abandoned him, this game takes on a much somber and depressing hue. Link left Hyrule as a forgotten hero searching for Navi, and stumbled in a world where every single person bore the likeness of the friends that he lost, and had to watch multiple times as they all were destroyed by the moon.
    Maybe he is the "hope" to the people of Termina. But to Link, Termina is just a nightmare. An undeserved punishment.

    This is one of those games that makes completionists out of people. There's not one moment in my playthrough of it that I felt like I was pushing myself to complete something I didn't want to. It's pure bliss that rewards you the deeper you delve into it.
    Plus, the fact it's a direct sequel allowed the devs more freedom to make it slightly harder and weirder. It feels like just the right middle ground between your typical, full-fledged Nintendo game with fresh, memorable set pieces and a fan hack that has faith that you've reached the necessary skill level to get the most out of its mechanics.
