    This game stands out as the only video game (to my knowledge) to successfully imitate Hollywood blockbuster remakes. The word "genius" gets thrown around a bit too much when talking about Kojima but this game in particular really is a work of genius. I love that he had to sit Kitamura down and say, "No, no, I *want* this to be crazy and over the top, that's the *point* man." Too bad Wild Wild West single-handedly killed off Hollywood's desire to take an old property and go crazy with it.

    • @Naterkix

      The world really could use more things with giant, steampunk, robot spiders in it. More of Will Smith's "great" rapping too. Mostly to add more laughs to the world again and take everybody's mind off all the monumental stupidity that keeps happening with alarming and ever-increasing frequency.

    • @24fretsoffury
      @24fretsoffury 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Pensive_Scarlet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@24fretsoffury I really respect him and his work, I just think a lot of self-proclaimed fans can be too sycophantic in worshiping him and, thus, diminish his work. They are one of the main reasons a friend of mine can't get into the series. Every time he tries to watch or interact with content that could pique his interest, they ruin it for him.

      @@Pensive_Scarlet I think people miss the fact that a lot of that worship is tongue-in-cheek. I for one love the ridiculous "Kojima is God" memes because the whole idea is so over the top and silly and comes from the actual games. As someone who helps run a Metal Gear Solid fan page, I can tell you that the vast majority of MGS fans are actually overly critical of everything Kojima does. Of course, there are surely some people who are truly obsessed with Kojima, but they are a small minority, and crazies like them exist in every fanbase.

      Cliche as it is, sans and flowey from undertale

    • @Spirit_of_Yubel
      @Spirit_of_Yubel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@superanimeniac I'd axe Flowey from that in the fact that the game does "Soft-Save" after certain points, as well as feel more like a lot of the same bullet-hell-avoidance through those points. It feels less of a "Challenge" and more of a "Test" to see if you understand the mechanics of Undertale. That, and it's more bullet hell than the rest of the game. Interesting, but not in the "Meta-Breaking" fight level of Psycho Mantis.
      Sans is a better fit because he physically does break the JRPG-like tropes. Enemies stand in the same spot and never really "Move" , only changing to reflect certain aspects of the fight, like pulling up a shield, changing forms, the likes. Sans challenges this meta-feeling by doing something unexpected for the genre: Literally moving to the side to *avoid attacks*. This *really* set the stage for what Sans was going to be like as a boss. Moreso if you saw his stats first and saw only 1HP.
      Later in the fight, he pulls off a different trick: Attacking you through your U.I. The one spot you can take the time to think, plan strategize, it's gone because of the fact the hurt boxes are now in spots you use. And in and of itself, plays into the last bit.
      Speaking of, said last bit really helps sell it. "Nothing". The typical back and forth of the genre is used against you for once by having the *Enemy* doing nothing. You, the Player, could use this tactic yourself in other games to plan out how to win. So how does it feel to be on the reviving end of that point?
      And what aids the fight more is the length. If you have to spend a really long time on a boss in other JRPGs, it's probably because you're under-equipped, unde-leveled, the likes. Here, having the fight be so lengthy adds an extra layer. It's attrition, on both sides.
      What wraps it all together is how the game has a borderline meta-knowledge of all this without actually breaking belief. It's already playing with the RPG ideas of EXP, LV. and the aspect of Saving and Loading in games. In fact, the game also tempers expectations by having the last "Boss", Mettaton EX, go down in 1 attack because hey, when you're well-equipped, well-prepared, and spent the time grinding in the game, even bosses can go down easy. Sans challenges this by fighting you on equal-footing: Meta-Knowledge. Sans is a true "Meta-Breaking" Boss because he turns what's expected of the JRPG genre on its head alone.

    • @superanimeniac
      @superanimeniac 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Spirit_of_Yubel I include flowey because he's the first boss to really play with the whole "these bosses have knowledge of game mechanics" that a new player is likely to see. Flowey is the first to mess with your save, the first to crash the game, and uses savestates to mess with the player. Even when you beat him...did you really?
      But yes, sans is the truly meta boss.

    Credit where credit is due: The new gameplay tweaks greatly improved the boss fights imo.
    Instead of running around circles with Ocelot, you're actually able to take cover and even shoot pipes to blind him, opening him up for attack.

    I’m a metal gear fan, have played both the original MGS1 and Twin Snakes, and I too prefer Twin Snakes. Though there’s one thing I wish it allowed for. The ability to have the soundtrack from the original game as an option.

    I prefer MGS1 over TTS, but mostly because of the music. I would NEVER tell someone to play MGS1 if they have access to TTS. But, you're in for a good time with either version!

    The hate this game gets is unwarranted, to me I think of Twin Snakes as a SUPPLEMENT to PS1 MGS1 rather than a REPLACEMENT so that's a good thing.

    Glad to hear you had a much easier time clearing this one compared to before, even if it did have its fair share of tedium to go with it. The Metal Gear franchise has always fascinated me, but I stink at stealth games, so I haven't indulged in nearly any, other than Revengeance. Keep up the great work, Jirard, looking forward to the next one.

    They need to bring this game to current gen consoles, complete with trophies/achievements. That way I can finally have the trophy set for the trilogy. I've already completed the Remastered versions of the sequels so the dogtag grind doesn't really bother me. Still a shame this great game got stuck as a GameCube exclusive.

    My one complaint about how they handled Twin Snakes is the way soldiers spawn in just outside camera range. They brought in a LOT of mechanics from MGS2, and I really wish they'd went just a little further and brought in the way soldiers had to enter through the doors leading into whatever room you were in. That's not a realism thing for me, but a playability issue. It's much easier to plan out how to handle raising an alarm when you have an expectation of where soldiers will be coming in from rather than it being as random as some of the worse platformers on the NES.

    I’m a huge Metal Gear fan, and I’ve beaten every Kojima-directed entry minus MG2:Solid Snake. I would LOVE to play Twin Snakes sometime, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I love the original game, and it’s tied with Snake Eater as my favorite in the series, but I’m not about to say the MGS2 updates wouldn’t be a great time, because they absolutely would. I’ve beaten the original game multiple times, and I’d love to see it through a new lens like this.

    As someone who started with Twin Snakes but only plays the PS1 version now, the only real issue with Twin Snakes is the music, they should of let it the same redid it where needed, instead they completely redid the sound track and it makes the game feel different, all the animations, cinematics, and added features feel more in line with the rest of the series tho, so its a great place to start for new people, even if the music is different.

    I’m surprised that no one has mentioned the ghosts that you can find. They are visible by using snake’s camera and snapping pictures from specific locations throughout the game. I can’t remember how many there are in total but I thought it was a nice addition when I originally played through it in 2004

    Metal Gear Solid on PS1 was probably the first game I had ever played with a story that in depth and had that much action. I didn’t even think things like that were possible. It was almost like a movie that I was in control of. I grew up with the Nintendo and SNES but then started falling out of it. But then Mega Man X4 came out for PlayStation and being a huge fan, I had to jump on that. I started getting back into gaming after that. I had just started discovering games like this and it blew my mind.
