  • I take you for a ride on the scooter to see an interesting phenomenon that surrounds new apartment complexes here in China, and I also bump into a dead bloke.

It is like in computer games, where you see the shop, you see the door, but you can't enter because developers haven't made the interior.

By the way your Scooter driving and Motorbike driving is entertaining all by itself even without any commentary. I know to you it must seem normal but watching it for the first time is eye opening and extreme. Weaving in and out and between large trucks where you have just inches and split seconds to get through is quite amazing especially when listening to you comment on it because to you its normal and just the way you drive on a normal day Your trip home with no lights on a bike that barely runs was also quite entertaining. Being from the US its quite a site. Have you ever been in an accident and if so have you ever gotten injured badly? I thought driving a bike in the US was dangerous but now it seems safe!

I am addicted to your video series! I have always had an extreme interest in China and the East but your video series has really got me hooked. I'm in my late 40s and a entrepreneur and my wife is in Mgt in Pediatric Cancer care at an elite hospital in the US. I plan to visit the area you live in in the next couple years and I am exploring the possibilities of moving there in the future, I know mostly young people decide to move there but as our kids are almost grown I think relocating for 5 plus years would be something each of us would enjoy and thrive at. Maybe I am wrong, not sure how many 50 year olds decide to try to relocate but I have never followed any norm! Even if I dont decide to relocate I have decided to learn the language to make my visit more enjoyable and enable me to travel without having to stay in areas where English is understood.

Not fake shops, as there is no shop there at all. It's just marketing to suggest what could be there. I'm sure the buyers of apartments in those buildings fully realize that, especially since there is no way to enter into those empty units.

    • @ciamarrajohn
      @ciamarrajohn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

You're both right; Serpenta's point still stands, to westerners it's false advertising.
Although local Chinese most likely know these [potential] shops won't all exist, or exist at all, the marketing technique still has it's effect - which is to sway a buyer to rent an apartment which may otherwise hold no interest or benefit for them by location or price wise.
The point is these blatantly false store fronts are a slightly shady, unethical way to conduct business and wouldn't be tolerated in most western countries. He's just giving another observation from a foreigner in a foreign land.

fake shops is correct in both interpretations of the phrase:
      1) fake = not real. TRUE: The shops are not real...or even open.
      2) fake = imitation of an original. TRUE as well.

Shenzhen looks like such a fun place to hang around, enjoy life, do business, go out for food and buzz around on a motor scooter .. The fake shops are hilarious - mind you, judging by all these new skyscrapers and other reports I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a real estate bubble happening... I'd love to live and experience Shenzhen for a year.. (maybe I'll come on a tourist visa for a month instead...) Serpentza makes it look like such fun..

It's amazing that China has such little regard for blatant copying. Aside from the legalities, I think most other countries would be embarrassed doing that kind of thing. Korea used to do it a bit , but not like China, and it's a disappearing thing. Korean's want to show their individuality and creativity. Like if I put up a Star Cuocs with the same signage as SBUX in S. Korea, people would probably publicly shame me. My guess is that as more and more people in China experience life outside of China, they will probably start to change.

They aren't 'fake' shops, they are placeholder examples - also they do encourage shops to be setup. You do see them all over the world just without the store name signs, and everyone knows that they aren't real shops. Go to any newly built mall in the US or UK and they put vinyl with possible shop opportunity (e.g. bar) image on the windows.

the advice to come up behind pedestrians not giving notice will be source of grief to somebody sooner or later.I can remember a similar situation riding a motorbike on a bridal path in a park.I came up on a woman from behind and just as I was about to pass her she became aware something was coming in back of her and made a quick dodge to one side--the side I had been planning to pass her on.Luckily I was going slow enough to have time to swerve around her. So, better advice: Slow down when riding on sidewalks. Best advice:Don't ride on sidewalks in the first place.

I know this is like vintage and all but I'm now learning mandarin (from Europe) and whenever you say little things I'm trying to decode. I'm really just beginning, like 1 month in. I learned like 5 verbs in class so far; guessing the rest.
There at 9:15, I suppose you may have said "我 * 来 看 见" to the guard guy. If I'm correct, what is the * there? :)
I'm only sure about 我 and 来 though, hehe.
Please put subtitles if it's not too much of a hassle :). It's be great, especially for the little phrases you say to people.
