    For the same price you rent some 3-bedroom apartment in downtown Shanghai, you can only get a room share in downtown London (if you are lucky) - the main reason I hate living in UK.
    Probably all street restaurant in China are better than most restaurant in any Chinatown (London, Montreal, New York....) at a fraction of the price.

    • @mlsi
      @mlsi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ambiva don't forget that most people there make less money than the people in london.

    • @ambiva
      @ambiva 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sarah Brooks One can simply do not go to any Street Vendors
      Even in large, famous restaurant or chains the price is still very low (compare to UK/US) because of heavy competition and the advent of online reviews. Loads of options if you pursue safe and cheap, cook yourself (ingredient price is also cheap), or buy cooked meals from large supermarkets (Carrefour, Metro, Walmart, RT-Mart, Tesco, etc.).

    It's shocking how high the price of things can change in such a short amount of time. When I visit China, I like to visit small places away from the hustle and bustle. I recall one time when I drove into Shenzhen to buy a can of soda for about 3.5 rmb, same can in Guangzhou 3rmb and 2rmb in the outskirts. A few years ago, 2006 I was on the outskirts of Foshan, a small village where I bought breakfast at an open market, 1rmb for 5 dumplings, and a bowl of wontons (15 of them) for 1.5rmb. Today, you can't get it for less than 10rmb.

I have seen some other videos from him, and it is sure that he lives a comfortable life in China and off course at the level of middle class. he's really a nice guy.Another fact is that, I live also a comfortable life with no more than 10 RMB per day.But I am an institute researcher and live in a campus, in a second line city,different circumstances.

    You also mentioned before, cheap medical. The problem with the cheaper places is the crime. I have not seen one place that doesn't have security doors on the balcony and front door, and that's also the case for the fenced in secured gardens. My girl was pick pocketed the other day, right off of Shennan, caught them but didn't scream - worried they would shut her up. Just picked up her wallet, said sorry and got moving. Someone said they saw, it was a group following her. I never had an issue.

    Transportation in general is super cheap in china. taxis, metros, super high speed trains, buses. buses by far especially long distance ones are pretty harsh. taxi drivers drive crazy but it's fine when you are used to it. metro systems especially in tier 1 cities are amazing. high speed trains are cheap, modern, and will allow you to see other cities easily.

    i don't know where you lived in china, but in our province, which is Jiangsu... the neighbourhood you lived doesn't have anything to do with where your kids get their education...i supppose you've heard the quite common word "fee for choosing school", if a lesser presitigous school locates in your district, then you can pay up certain amount of money to the school you wish your children to attend, and get it done.

    I think it's difficult knowing what to do in a hypothetical situation because it's different each time. It's a lot easier to assess if it's happening in real life.
    In an office, you usually have the benefit of knowing the person and you can see the expression on his or her face and hear the inflections in their voice, i.e. the change in tone and pitch.
    Also, I too have a dilemma, but it's a little different. I'm usually pretty nice and easy going, but some people interpret it as being weak.

    How about the following costs: insurance (healthcare, car, others), telephone / internet, visas (HK travel), (local) taxes, parking, fuel. In this respect, SZ is as expensive / inexpensive as HK, though renting in HK is much much higher. As long as you stay local, life can be pretty affordable. How does spending compare to disposable income (in general)?

    Try living here in Sweden, taxi fares go about 70-100 rmb for a destination in the same city. 29 rmb for a busride even if it is only 1 station. But i assume you're comparing to other places in China, that's fine :)

    Hong Kong is not Mainland China and therefore should not be misconstrued to mean China (at least not to those in the know) - i know you were using it as an example but i'm just clarifying. rent and cost of living in Nanjing is cheap too (especially for shared housing) so his general assessment of the costs is at least relatively accurate. certainly it depends on the area but food is still extremely cheap all around though, too!

    in chinese supermarkets it's pretty cheap. really but don't expect a clean looking western supermarket. in a western standard "high end" supermarket it will be affordable for things like veggies eggs etc. anything imported is more than it would cost in your hometown. therefore if you want to eat imported food in china you cost of living will be higher in china. generally average restaurants chinese, japanese, vietnamese are affordable 60rmb per meal. less than 10usd.

    I think it's kind of complicated to explain China's education system, because if I would go explain China's education system, I have to explain Hukou institution in advance. Not only China's education system but lot of other things is bound with Hukou. But I can tell you the public school is the most prime in China, and the connection between school and neigborhood in China is basically same to it in US, good neigborhood always has good school.

    generally saying, china can be cheap if you live the chinese lifestyle. if you want to emulate a western standard lifestyle you will pay the same or more compared to western cities. you can spend 6 rmb on meat stick stands or 600rmb per person at a french restaurant. up to you. you can spend 4000rmb for a "shit" apt or 30,000 for a modern downtown located one. expats usually get housing allowance of 30k-185k(executive level) per month.

    I think you forgot to add insurance and taxes for your car, health cost, how much is petrol per liter, how much your wage is, or simply how much money do you keep for yourself after you've paid all the aforementioned costs. How much is the average wage in China for a Chinese person?

    I never understood why you are always referring to prices as Renminbi/RMB, which is three syllables, when it's not even the actual numerical denominator, which is the one-syllable yuán.
