What an incredible work! Having lost my beautiful black cat, who meant the world to me, i have been looking for medium's to try and capture his likeness and have started trying pastels for the first time! I had no idea of the tricks and techniques involved, in creating depth and shading through layers, with pastel, i feel a bit less scared of trying some of these now. So thankyou for such a clear and helpful video !
Ian Ashenden Hi there Ian, I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your cat. I truly hope that my tips in this video will encourage you to create a portrait of your feline friend xXx

Awe thank you ☺️ Your comment is truly appreciated xXx
I just love your tutorials you shouldn’t worry too much I don’t mind seeing your hair lol, you are so down to earth and not pretentious at all for an ordinary person like me it’s less intimidating. I’ve just ordered the set of ten drawing pan pastels which I think will give good base colours for most subjects which I want to do then I can add to this individually, I have the complete set of Faber castell Pitt pastel pencils and soon the Caran d’Ache when they arrive. This means Thst with your excellent tutorials along with my knowledge of drawing I can start to do some of the animals snd birds Thst my children have been asking me for. I love how you e plain everything also about bringing the company, ours of the background into the subject in a subtle way I wouldn’t have thought of that
Wow there's going to be no stopping you now Margaret 😊 I hope you love the pan pastels as much as I do, they're so easy to use, and the colours blend and mix so easily. Have fun xXx
Exceptionally well done. And, mind you, it was with dust!!
Lol thank you Chad, truly appreciated and you made me laugh too 😉 xXx
Love this painting. Could you do one with soft pastels? I really have trouble painting fur. You are so good at it!
Hi there Karen, sorry I missed your comment first time around. Thank you for watching my video and for taking the time to leave a comment - truly appreciated. Your 'fur in soft pastel' suggestion has now been added to my 'to do' list 😉 xXx

Absolutely stunning!! I just bought pan pastels and CarbOthello pastel pencils and I think this will be my 1st painting! It is truly amazing! Hoping your new microphone (I read your comments) helps with the volume, I could barely hear you on this but, the video was great!! So glad I found you! amazing techniques

Hi Kerry, this is the first time I’ve watched your work and it’s fabulous. You are also a gifted teacher. Thank you for sharing your skills with us. Could you please tell me more about the rod you use to support your hand when you work on the fine detailing ?
Much appreciated..
Anu
Hi there Anu, thank you for watching my video and and for taking the time to leave such an encouraging comment - truly appreciated. With regard to your question: The rod I'm resting my hand on is called a 'mahl stick'. These are usually made of wood and are about a meter in length, with a ball-shaped pad at one end. The pad can be rested on the easel or table (or even on the painting itself if working on a larger project) with the other end supported by the artist's non-painting hand. The main body of the pole can then be used to rest the artist's working hand on without fear of touching or smudging the paint/pastel/charcoal etc. I hope this helps xXx
Super useful demo - Thankyou sound quality could have been a bit louder - didn’t want to miss your pearls of wisdom 😘
Awe thank you so very much for taking the time to watch my video and for leaving an insightful and encouraging comment, truly appreciated. I'm sorry that the sound quality wasn't brilliant. Awe thank you KristiLee your encouraging comment is truly appreciated ☺️ I don’t, as yet, have a Patreon site, however this is something that I’d like to commit to in the not too distant future xXx
Thanks for sharing your process. Awesome work! You inspire-me! I wanna try a fur now! hahah Your audio is a little low for me, but I turn it up everything I culd to hear you.

Yes I would like to see you do animal eyes please 🙏❤️
I'm half way through filming a leopard painting that shows the eyes being created xXx
Thank you🥰
Awe my pleasure xXx
one more thing you can sharpen those with sandpaper.
Yes, all of the pastel pencils can be sharpened using sandpaper xXx
I just found you as I searched for black fur in pastels. Excellent video. I am curious on the size of this piece. And, wondering if you usually use the white pastelmat or is this a light grey. Thanks as this is going to be a huge help for my black domestic cat!
Hi there Bev thank you for watching my video, I hope you found the information useful. This piece is quite small, 10" x 12" I believe. I never use white paper, only light grey or a sand colour one. If I had to stick to one colour of paper then it would definitely be the light or mid grey as I can do everything on that. I hope all goes well with your black cat project xXx
After commenting on MeWe after the sale of this piece, I found this very helpful. You explain your process and I now need to binge watch all your tutorials. Just curious is that a Lincolnshire accent?
Lol hi there Denise, welcome to my TH-cam channel ☺️ My accent is a Leicestershire one xXx
@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist Re-accent, I was close! Just watched the Lynx eye and loved being able to see the whole process! Never would have been brave enough to use those colours but wow they really work once the details are on🤗
Great job like your big black kitty Even though I’m a dog person . New subscriber also .
I too am a dog person, owner of a lurcher, but I do love all the other amazing creatures of this world too - from spiders to snow leopards :-) Thank you for your feedback and for subscribing too, truly appreciated xXx
Hello Bev, I was wondering how you achieved the background in this painting. It's beautiful and works so well with the cat! Thanks!
Bev? 🤔 Hi there Marilyn thank you for watching my video and for taking the time to leave an encouraging comment - truly appreciated. I've made a separate video on how to create an out of focus background, I hope this will help you: th-cam.com/video/mlOMCtiea2E/w-d-xo.html
@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist Hahaha...sorry for the confusion! I was talking to my sister Bev at the time on a phone call and typed her name instead...dummy. Thanks for the response I will definitely look at that video!
another problem for me is i dont sketch lol . I am just a colorist so i would be doing these things on already colored pages. Would it still work
Yes these techniques work in many mediums. Undercoats of different colours will always affect the way the top coats look. Get a spare piece of paper and keep it next to your colouring book to try out different layering techniques before applying them to your project. xXx
I would like to see you do a lion 🙏
Hi there Johanne, sorry I missed your comment first time around. Thank you for watching my video and for taking the time to leave a comment - truly appreciated. Your lion suggestion has been added to my 'to do' list. xXx
Massive, massive help thank you so very much, lovely work, perfect
Hi there Michael, I'm so glad you've found this video useful, that's what it's all about :-) xXx
Kerry Newell - Professional Wildlife Artist would buy one of your prints or originals are they on your website thanks 😁 your work is outstanding
Awe thank you Michael, I'm just in the process of updating certain aspects of my website. I built it myself and the gallery/shop is being updated at the moment so it's appears more user friendly. I also need to update my latest finished originals ... but please feel free to have a look now: www.KerryNewell.com
Kerry Newell - Professional Wildlife Artist thank you
Loved this tutorial, I have a black cat and I would like to paint her guided by your painting, I will use velour paper, my reference picture is my cat in green grass, what velour colour do you think would be best suited? I have black, grey , sand and light grey ? Thank you. Your pastel tutorials are truly wonderful to watch 👏🏼
Amal Bensaleh hi there, thank you once again for your encouraging words, they are truly appreciated. Both light grey or medium grey would work well for your new project. As you have both colours available, I'd choose the light grey as a darker grey could dull the green grass background. I wish you well with your new pastel painting 😊 xXx
Kerry Newell - Professional Wildlife Artist thank you very much 🤗
Thank you for sharing this. It explains the techniques much clearer than most. Your work is beautiful. Please can I ask what you used for the whiskers? Thank you ❤️🎨
Awe thank you Deborah, truly appreciated. For the whiskers I believe I used a sharpened Caran d'Ache white pastel pencil (my usual go to white pastel pencil) xXx
Thank you Kerry, I need to invest in some of these pastel pencils xx
What brush are you using to apply the pastel ? Your drawings are beautiful.
Hi there, it isn’t a brush but a Sofft Tool. It’s like a palette knife with a soft removable cover. They come in four different shapes, each with replaceable covers, and can be used with pastel, charcoal, graphite and other dry mediums. I hope this helps you xXx
@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartistthank you very much
Did you use a toned pastelmat paper and if so what color? I would also like to see what you used for colors on the background. Beautifully warm painting.
Hi there Pamela thank you for watching my video - truly appreciated. In answer to your questions - the pastel mat paper was light grey in colour and the colours used in the background were lilac and white which mixed to different intensities on a separate sheet of paper before applying to the panther painting. I hope this helps. Stay safe and stay creative xXx
@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist very helpful. I have a difficult time deciding on what color toned paper to use. I actually picked a light grey last night! Did my sketch and can't wait to get started on the painting. love your work and tutorials!
@@pamelabaileyverity6391 Brilliant Pamela, have fun and thank you once again xXx
@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist omg! that panther is so hard. you made it look easy. the ugly stage is very hard to get thru. I will walk away for a while...
@@pamelabaileyverity6391 hi there, it's just practice and patience that's all. We all hit the ugly stage of a painting at some point, and I too will often walk away and grab a coffee etc. When you go back to your painting you'll be looking at it with fresh eyes. Try to concentrate on just a little area at a time and that should help. Getting a small part near to completion puts the rest of the painting into context, and will let you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Stay safe, stay creative and most of all have fun xXx
why the red?
Hi there Sherry, thank you for watching my video, truly appreciated.
In regard to your question - the red undercoat adds warmth to the painting. Without this the body of the panther would look a lot cooler. xXx
My favorite animal! Amazing! I looked 3 times! (I need speak better engl.)😊🌞
Awe thank you, they truly are a stunning species! This little video is my most favoured one so far it seems. I guess many people find black fur hard to tackle in pastel 😉 xXx
@@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist
I don't have pastels, but it looks stunning to watch (I never try that medium). Thank yooooou!💓
Great tutorial such a pity it was quite difficult to hear you clearly through the sound interference
Thank you for your feedback Carol, truly appreciated. I'm new to the tech side of things, but yes you're quite correct, I'll purchase a microphone before doing any more voiceovers. Thank you xXx
Thats great am looking forward to your next one xx
I've just ordered my microphone, should receive it by the 16th May :-) xXx
Thats brilliant will be much better as your tutorials are so full of great advice they deserve to be heard for years to come xx
Awe thank you Carol :-) Wishing you a truly wonderful weekend xXx
Just to let you know I am subscribed and have the notification bell set to ring but I did not get your notification. Will un-sub and re-sub to see if that makes a difference
Hi there Thomas thank you for letting me know. Unfortunately it is a well-known problem (that the notification bell) doesn't always work 😕 When I do have a new video go live I always share it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn too, just in case the notification bell doesn't do it's job. Many TH-cam creators, even the ones with over 100k subscribers are having the same notification problems xXx
