Painting Black Fur in Pastel - UART 400 Tutorial

- A full hour and a half length narrated tutorial (Part timelapse, mostly real time) showing my first use of UART 400 pastel paper and creating black fur on a dog.

I use Uart 400 & 500 for animal portraits. You can get great details in fur, especially rough coats using tortillons and stumps. Save your fingers! Thanks for sharing work with black fur!

WOW, the character in that dogs face is precious. UART paper is really some tough stuff. I like the 500 and 600 for the pastels and the 800 is perfect for color pencils. However, my very favorite..is velour. Being in the states Pastelmat is very expensive...wish they could work out something on the shipping for people overseas as well as the US.
I too love velour but am enjoying trying out the other papers. I really want to try the 800 UART. Seems like it might be similar to the Pastelmat. Have you tried ordering from Jackson's Art in the UK? Wonderful video and I already commented that you can use pipe insulation cut into smaller pieces on sanded paper, I love your work on the dark fur, I have seen a couple of videos that you did some white fur/hair I would love to see you create longer tutorials for that as well! Thank you for sharing this lovely picture and process!

Try foam pipe insulation cut into small pieces. Works great for blending and saves those tender fingers.
Great tip! This was only 8" big and it hurt! I'll use tools next time :-)
Emma Colbert Art I have seen others use the pipe insulation and you can cut it into small pointed pieces and so much cheaper than makeup foam pieces!
Beautiful painting! If you want to use your fingers to blend on sanded paper, you can try a finger cot. I think you can tone the paper with a thin wash of acrylic paint in a midtone color. I haven't tried it yet, but I know some artists do it.
I keep meaning to try some methods to save the fingers but I'm normally on papers that feel nicer anyway. Lots of nice effects come from underpainting. On my to-do list also :-)
@@EmmaColbertArt I was wincing every time I saw you rub the sanded paper with your finger. I've done it and it HURTS! Lol

Very well spotted yes it is! It's like he went off the rails after his fame and then we found him wandering in a carpark in Spain. He's managed to retire in some comfort this past 4 years!
Why did you choose to include that distracting piece of wood or whatever it is above the dogs head and on the right side? There's more contrast between the purple and those yellow areas than between the purple and the actual dog. It'd have been so easy to make those areas purple as well so I'm a bit confused why you made those choices.
Nonetheless, you did a wonderful job rendering the dogs fur and I think you captured his expression well. Especially considering it was your first time drawing him!
