I can certainly say that the Gioconda pencil by Koh i Noor is not black enough. It doesnt cover well, looks washed out. I am going to try your tips. I have never tried square pastels, but my dad has them, I will check them out. And I will pop into the art shop too! Looking for very bright medium blues too for a blue jay! Any tips for that?
The Cretacolour Black Chalk pencil is very good too, but I shall have to compare and contrast with my Nupastel and Art Spectrum now I have some black horses to do!
Thanks Daz, I'm the same with YT. I think it helps a lot if you hit the bell icon on my videos. They're supposed to send a notification then...glad you found this one and like it!
Brilliant video, Emma!!! 👍 What a useful video! 🌟 Not only for finding out the blackest Black- but also for the different temperatures of Black! 🤗 Thank you so much! ⚘ A tip for you from me: Baby-wipes with aloe vera! Great for your skin, and a dream to wipe mucky pastels off! 🤗
A true artist! 😉🎨 I use soap and water too, of course - but these baby-wipes leaves a moisturizing effect and are neat to have at the side. 👍 My hands got so dry sometimes, but no more! 👐🌟
I am mostly a charcoal artist. Transitioning to more color. Koh i noor pastel pencils where my blackest black so far and i tried so many charcoal products. I just use them for finishing touches.
What a great video, Emma. Thank you for doing all that. It will save us much time. I have a few blacks and find Faber Castell, Gioconda, Caron d'Ache pretty good. Now that I have seen your video it is clear which are the better pastels. I will try and get the Nupastel. The Girault was pretty impressive too. Very helpful!!!
great video, good to see all the different result. Bruynzeel is a Dutch brand and indeed they are great pastel pencils ( and colorpencils) to work with.
yay Nupastel! I find it to be a very dark, almost sparkly black that brightens rather than dulls the work. It's quite beautiful. And Bruynzeel has been my go-to black pencil. I'm happy my favorites stack up well against the others.
GREAT VIDEO! I have enjoyed watching your evaluations and I have to admit that on this monitor/screen(iPad) I had trouble seeing the difference but I believe that you did a wonderful job and sharing your opinion and expertise is why we tuned in to begin with! You are truly inspirational and so generous with your knowledge, thank you Emma. I am glad that I have a few of the darkest choices and I have no need to go buy more pastels! I believe that this is the first time that this has happened!
Haha what a result! Always nice to realise you have the best ones. Yes it was a particularly difficult video to light. Black just looks black! Only really in person is it possible to see the subtle differences I think.
That was a fantastic experiment. Saves us so much time and purchases! Thank you for this. I really appreciated it. I have a few blacks I really love, but will now add a couple more from your suggestions in this video. Cheers! 🙏❤️
Thanks Judy, yes it was expensive to get hold of all these. I fund this with my Jacksons Art affiliates link. When people purchase there using my link in the description I get a small % from Jacksons which I spend on these videos. So everyone helps me fund them :-)
@@EmmaColbertArt Ok! I bet it was expensive! Of course, that resonated as I ordered a bit of supplies after watching. Good to know. I’m so sorry that I didn’t realize this about Jackson’s. 😳😳
That’s super helpful video....so now I know which black pastels to purchase. How about video on white pastels and pastels pencils? I love your works lamp, may I ask what brand it is? Thank you
I'm working on a white video next! And I have plans for several more comparison videos on colour and different brands. My lamp is made by the Daylight Company.
This is so helpful thanks! Have you also tried Conte a Paris Pierre Noir 1710? It’s different from the Conte a Paris Fusian Charcoal and seem darker than Carbothello which is my fave. It also blends well with the diff pastels tho it feels a bit ‘waxier’ :)
Pretty sure I haven't tried that one. It's the 009 I was using which was recommended as their darkest by Dakota Pastels. I'll give it a try if I get a chance but I'm very pleased with both the Wolff carbon and the Bruynzeel which I've been using since I made this video.
Yes I found it difficult too and ended up getting it from Dakota Pastels in the US along with several others in this video. I won't mind continuing to use my Faber Castell from this video to be honest. There is so little difference between them! Unless you have them side by side you won't notice.
Thank you for this. I use the NuPastels all the time and did find that the NuPastels black was darker and more reliable than my pencils (Stabiilo). Now, though, I’m still looking for the darkest, richest brown for those dark, dark brown horses! In some breeds, it’s called Schwartz-Braun (black-brown). These horses are almost black, but not. I’d love to find the right color for them. :) Thanks again.
Very very helpful. I’m working on a black Japanese Obi and been having a lot of trouble getting a really dark black. Any of those you tested have a blue undertone? Like a ravens wing?
Hi Lynette, no these were all a very flat dark black with no colour tint. That's what I was looking for here. Terry Ludwig actually does some lovely darks with different colour undertones. They don't actually do pure black which is why they didn't feature here.
Thank you Emma, have a bunch of Giraults in my Dakota Pastel cart and will add the 2 blacks tested. Question, Terry Ludwig has some serious darks are surprised they were in the test. Did they not make the cut?
I do love the Terry Ludwigs and use the darks constantly to liven up my black areas. But I was really searching for flat dark black in this, and yes I don't believe they do that. I was searching for the black hole in outer space black here...something I don't use in abundance, but for realism it is useful to have.
Hallo Emma, thank you for this video :-) Can I ask you for whithest white pastell pen? I have Conte a Paris, CarbOthello und Faber Castell Pitt Pastell, but none of them really shine white !!!
My next comparison video is all about white! I'll release it soon, I don't even know the results yet...only just received all my whites in the post! Excited to find out :-)
Charcoal pencils seem to be a good option too. Was trying my best to keep it to pastel for this, but did sneak in one outsider! :-) My FC Polychromos stick is still close to top so I know FC do good blacks.

I thought there was an actual cat behind you on the shelf then I realised I watched the tutorial of it 😁 great video
Haha! It could be him some day, he's always up to badness!
The Cretacolour Black Chalk pencil is very good too, but I shall have to compare and contrast with my Nupastel and Art Spectrum now I have some black horses to do!
Dakota Pastels is great! I purchase from them all the time.
Thank you for making this video Emma. Very helpful.
I know I’m late to this party! TH-cam haven’t sent me any notifications for your channel in months.
This comparison video is amazing, thanks 🙏🏻

Thanks! I tend to use good old soap and water which is why my bathroom sink is a different colour every week lol!

Very, very useful. Thanks
This is incredibly helpful. Thank you so much.
You should try Cretacolor 460 12... imo. Anyway beautiful video and usefull tips as always
Thank you for doing this for us.
I am mostly a charcoal artist. Transitioning to more color. Koh i noor pastel pencils where my blackest black so far and i tried so many charcoal products. I just use them for finishing touches.
I've had this one recommended by someone else too. Will have a look :-)
Rembrandt carre black is also a fairly intense black.
What a great video, Emma. Thank you for doing all that. It will save us much time. I have a few blacks and find Faber Castell, Gioconda, Caron d'Ache pretty good. Yes whichever of those you can get, Nupastel or Girault, even the Faber Castell I use often, all those are good!
great video, good to see all the different result.
Bruynzeel is a Dutch brand and indeed they are great pastel pencils ( and colorpencils) to work with.
Hi Trudy, yes I have heard of them and was super impressed by their black in this video. Worth getting a few more :-)

Great test Emma. Faber castell Pitt charcoal round stick and Caran d’ache charcoal pencil are also very black.
Thank you Emma, great video and a big help, sometimes I feel I can't make an area as black as I really like to,

very informative, thank you. I use mars lumograph black (also a carbon pencil ) and it works wonderfuly
Thank you! So interesting.Would love more of these. Eg. The best red..best blue etc. Just fantastic. I actually had each of the best ones yeh!
Planning another already! :-)

A while back I tried to get my hands on a Nupastel but difficult as I live in the UK
Yes I found it difficult too and ended up getting it from Dakota Pastels in the US along with several others in this video. I won't mind continuing to use my Faber Castell from this video to be honest. There is so little difference between them! Unless you have them side by side you won't notice.

Hi Laurie, I like Unison's BE6 and Dark5 for really dark browns. One is warm and one is cool. Maybe that's another video to make! :-)

I don’t believe that Terry makes a black stick! It goes against his philosophy of color mixing, if that is even a thing anymore?
I do love the Terry Ludwigs and use the darks constantly to liven up my black areas. But I was really searching for flat dark black in this, and yes I don't believe they do that. Lol
Wow that might be the fastest comment ever haha! Thank you :-)
Great Video. I use Charcoal pencil Pitt soft from Faber Castell. He is very very dark.
Charcoal pencils seem to be a good option too. Was trying my best to keep it to pastel for this, but did sneak in one outsider! :-) My FC Polychromos stick is still close to top so I know FC do good blacks.
Nupastels are discontinued
They are only being sold in sets I think. So you can't buy individual colours in boxes. It's a shame.
🏅👍
