I'm an old fogey so I'm more familiar with Dionne Warwick's version but Isaac Hayes made it his own. He's a bad mother....shut yo mouth!

Isaac's version is monumental. The "Xanadu" of soul. But Dionne's version wins. It was part of my musical fabric growing up. All over A.M. radio and brings back memories. Music will do that for you, the places, the colors, even the smells, they return to the surface, albeit ever so briefly. Ignition-cognition. I'm sure someone can better explain it. I'm just enjoying the ride.

Isaac's version tears your heart outta your chest,, stomps alll over it and leaves it in pieces .. then walks by... wow.. Yeah Dionne's version is nice

Without question Isaac Haye's full 12 minute version is the best. It's out of this world. The strings, horns, the keyboards, the killer bass, the arrangement in the 2nd half of the track, the voice. I mean... Great reaction!

Both of them made a brilliant interpretation of the song.
Dionne's is a classy, tender and vocally great soul act which makes you falling in love with her again and feeling bad that you've made her grieve.
On the other hand, Isaac's version feels like a trip on a hot summer day. Its atmosphere has an underlying tragedy, darker than any Motown act at that time and it is yet so smooth and fricking hot.

The Dionne Warwick version was pretty progressive for 1964. The Isaac Hayes version is not only ahead of its time, but is also the kind of thing that's been dissected and sampled by hundreds of people since. That little bass riff, the rhythm guitar warble, the strings, the backing vocals. James Alexander on bass. I love this era of soul music -- Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield... good times.

I like Isaac Hayes version, its like a musical Gumbo of instruments. It's like an epic Orchestra.

Both work in their own ways. They establish different moods

Never heard his cover, I love Issac Hayes. His style & the instrumentation here are great!
But as soon as Dionne starts, its over. I'm Floating down a river of milk & honey. Impeccable. It's much simpler, but her vocals...all day, every day. And a woman delivering those more vulnerable lyrics is more impacful to me.
    Great choice... again.

The Dionne Warwick version is iconic, I never knew the Issac Hayes version existed but it’s awesome.🔥

Real aficionados may like the version from the album that Isaac Hayes and Dionne Warwick recorded together in which they duet with Dionne singing an Isaac Hayes arrangement version of Walk on By interspersed with him singing a funky version of the Bachrach/David/Warwick song I Just Don't Know What To Do with Myself. Now that would make a great reaction video!

If you type in cool and smooth into your search engine 'Walk on By' by Issac Hayes should be playing. Clear favourite here for me but it is a good original very good cover situation. It's also maybe the prog rock fan in me. :D
btw. you should make this with 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' by Marvin Gaye and Creedence Clearwater Revival or 'Proud Mary' also from Creedence and Tina Turner.

Love both versions. Thank you for reacting to Isaac Hayes. I feel like his genius has been largely lost and forgotten, so I appreciate your helping to keep his music alive.

Dionne Warwick all day long. The Isaac Hayes version I don't even count as a cover. Except for the lyrics, it's a completely different song. A great song, just not the same song imo.

Check out the version by The Stranglers . It has a killer instrumental section.

Came here to say this. Especially good for the killer bass tone, and the nice 'n' sleazy vocal from Hugh Cornwell.

Something I really enjoy from Isaac's version is that some of the instruments, like guitar and organ, are used sparingly during the verses, but then he gives the whole band the ending vamp to let loose after such a slow, epic, moody orchestral beast.

I've heard the Isaac Hayes version plenty of times from movies and my mom's soul collection. Then I stumbled upon Dionne Warwick's version. Hayes's version I love because of the instrumentation he usually has in all of his songs.

Another old fogey here. But Isaac Hayes' version has its merits. There was a version produced by Hayes but sung by Warwick on what I believe was the Enterprise label. Tough to find but REALLY GREAT!

To be fair I have heard the Warwick version a gazillion times and never knew there was an Issac Hayes version. I would prefer to listen to the original but I get the cool factor with the cover but it's too busy for my taste and drags on way too long...
