This was part of their last tour, so yes it was latter Queen. It was poppy, and better than the album version, IMO. Thanks for the reactions!

This was the song for the end credits scene of the movie "Highlander", and - what many people who complain about that song as too much pop/mainstream don't like - it's designed as the hit song to promote that movie, which it did perfectly, as it was a charts success.

not a movie -watcher, though? Queen was asked to write a song for the upcoming sci-fi/fantasy movie "Highlander". Brian wrote "Who Wants To Live Forever" (beautiful), and the others contributed as well. All told, they wrote 6 songs for the film. I don't think a soundtrack was released, or if so, it was very limited. So Queen being Queen, they did some modifications, packaging their songs up along with others and presented us with "A Kind Of Magic" album. Queen did not realize the subsequent Magic Tour would be the last Queen tour with Freddie.

The kind of magic tour was put together,in part on the back of their success at live aid .
Queen where not on the original line up for live aid .l was lucky enough to get tickets being in their fan club, btw Queen has the longest running fan club. Queen stole the show, often referred to as the greatest performance of all time. There sound engineer removed the limiters to make them louder.
Even though Freddie doctor had advised not to perform live aid lm sure glad they did.
Recommend to watch the movie Bohemian Rhapsody.
The kind of magic tour was there biggest and last . Freddie knew he couldn't go on at this pace .
The album kind of magic contains alot of tracks connected with the Highlander movie. I think princes of the universe was released in the States instead of kind of magic. .
    Keep up the good work.

It feels soft because It's really just a pop song. It was quite a big hit for them reaching #3 in the UK and top 10 basically all over Europe. And its immortalized by it being used in the movie Highlander which is one of the sci-fi cult classics of the 1980's. It definitely rocks out more live than on the record, but yeah, at its core, its just pop.

Roger wrote this one for the Queen Soundtrack for the movie Highlander. It is a cool song. One Vision and A Kind Of Magic are both Roger Taylor songs or at least Roger Taylor concepts, he brought them into the studio but Freddie took a lot of editing freedom on both Roger's and John's compositions. So far in all your reactions, albums, etc, you have not favored Roger's songs so it might just be that, you are not a fan of Taylor's songwriting. I like this song and I do like the energy it brings...and yes the drums and bass do sort of chug along but I do ride on the guitar solo and guitar in general on this one. Live, the crowd loves this song.

  • @copski9361

I'd say the bass is the least ABBA-esque part of this song, though I generally hear what you mean. As a bass player I think you'd really appreciate Rutgar Gunnarson, his bass lines for ABBA were very funky, sophisticated and active. Supremely underrated player in general. Waterloo, gimme gimme gimme, dancing queen, knowing me and knowing you and voules vous are all great examples.

If you didn’t take to the live version you would not like the studio one which uses a drum machine all the way through and is lacking in feel

One vision used in the movie iron eagle
The below songs were all used in the movie highlander
    A kind of magic
    One year of love
    Who wants to live forever
**Gimme the Prize**. Freddie’s most aggressive vocal imho

This is an example of one of several good but not great Queen songs from their 80's catologue. Personally, I don't think they had another great song after Under Pressure. For me, the live version is the way to go with this song and I think the do a good job with it live...the production on the studio version feels too tight and too clean and the drums feel small. Roger's original version of this song (which you can find on YT) was played during the rolling credits at the end of Highlander - it's a little looser and has a bit more of a rock feel to it - I much prefer that studio version. Loved Highlander.

To me, 70s Queen was flawless. 80s Queen was fine but not overwhelming. They still had songs that other artist would have killed for. Personally, I do not like the 86 live shows. Everybody is praising Wembley 86 which I absolutely do not like. I can't listen to it. You hear that Freddie is past his prime and they lost their special touch somehow. Also the setlist is not for me. Too many medleys. They even went back to the Elvis covers from 74 which I never understood. Maybe it's just them having fun but I don't need that. Their best live shows have been on the Jazz Tour and the Crazy Tour in 78 and 79. This was Queen at their absolute prime. The Budapest show is average at best.
