    It took Isaac Hayes 12 minutes to write theme from shaft and it won him an Grammy award, bought this in 1975 on a 12" single with another bangin tune ' Juicy Fruit (Disco Freak)' the man was a genius.

      I can still remember Hayes coming up on stage at the Grammy's that year in his chain mail muscle shirt. That man invented cool.

    My father Richard "Johnny " Davis played lead trumpet on this and Hot Buttered Soul ! He played with the Memphis Horns, Otis Redding, Booker T and the MG's and many many others! Cool Cat !!

    We ran to our neighborhood theater when this came out. Our own black hero and Black Moses soundtrack. This was everything to us. Power to the People!

      Yup. It was WAY more fun being 20 in the 70's than being 70 in the 20"s. Back in the day, we thought it would last forever. If there's an afterlife, I hope mine is the summer of '73.

    Isaac Hayes led the orchestra. You must hear his I Stand Accused and By The Time I get to Phoenix. He was very talented as a songwriter, singer and producer. His interpretation of songs were creative and entertaining. RIP to a legacy..

    Doc Rich, the layers that you are talking about are the horn and string arrangement by Grammy Award Winner, Johnny Allen. Johny Allen is a legend. Johnny Allen was a genius hiding in plain sight!

      It always reminded me of the layering in "Poppa Was A Rolling Stone", which for my money is the best produced song ever recorded.....horns, strings and soul.

      @@Martin.Wilson Clearly, you have a good ear. Johnny Allen and Paul Riser worked together at Motown in the 60's and remained very good friends for the next 50 years. Johnny Allen won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the Theme from Shaft and the following year Paul Riser won the same award for Papa Was A Rolling Stone.

    I was a Drum Major when this song came out and people knew when we were coming when we did this Isacc Hayes brought the smoke.

    I remember going down to our local record shop after hearing this tune on the radio for the first time, my brother and I bought all of the Isaac Hayes Albums we could at the time, about 5 of them I think. Great music, great memories, not a bad film too!

      I am 62.5 our MOM went out and BOUGHT this record after hearing when out dancing. She even bought a record player from Fred Meyer MARKET TIME the forerunner of today's Fred Meyer's (FREDDIES)....A STEREO!!!!

    Shaft is a series of movies from the blaxploitation era. The first film won an Oscar for this score.

    you are VERY funny, this is the first time ive known a reaction like yours to - theme from shaft this was the way it was way back in the 70s. All part of hat makes this a clasic soundtrack and film.
    you should also listen to- SUPERFLY GUY by Curtis mayfield (also a film main theme)

    DUDE! You didn't know that this was the theme from the movie..? Who were your parents/grandparents..?! I feel like Jack Black in 'School of Rock'... You need to listen to Isaac Hayes Live at the Sahara Tahoe. Came out of one of his first concerts after this movie. KILLED it!!! If you want to hear a Television theme, he also does the song from 'The Men' which he scored for TV. Hayes was a Musical Genius..!

    "Private Dick" is a reference to "Dick Tracy" a popular comic strip police detective. The term "Dick" is like using the term "cop."

      Actually in the movie, Shaft was a private detective. Slang in the seventies for Private detective is Private Dick Probably from Dick Tracy. Not a reference to a cop.

    This is NOT the original, but a remake of the original. Find the album version from the soundtrack. Glad it was Issac who redid this.

    Late 60's - early 70's movie soundtracks were off the chart funky. Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Galt MacDermot and Lalo Schifrin were on top of there game there. Even Japanese movies of this era were full of dope joints :
