  • Automatic, Manual, everything in between, and everything outside, there are quite a few types of transmissions, so let’s cover the 5 most commonly used transmissions in cars, Torque Converter Automatics, Stick Shift Manual, CVT’s, DCT’s, and SMG’s. So without further ado, go watch the video and stop reading the description!
OH, and I already know someone is going to be upset about me hating the SMG, but before you say, "try it before you knock it". YA BOI HAS TRIED IT, AND YA BOI WILL KNOCK IT. I've had to go from one M6 to another in search of a SMG that wasn't complete dog turd, but low and behold, such does not exist. Even at 50,000 miles, those transmissions love to self destruct on themselves! You're never safe! It's a shame that beautiful V10 had to be mated to such an awful fragile POS. If I could, I'd still buy a M6 anyway, but I'd DCT swap that mofo. The newer DCT in the new M6 is nice, but the lame TTV8 in those sound god awful. Like BMW, how did you mess up a Twin Turbo V8 sound? If only the best of both worlds could combine...BMW please make a M6 that has a V10 and DCT.
That's all I could ever want from this world...that and a Lamborghini Diablo of course.

Manual is still the most fun, hands down. I know it's not the most effective anymore, but all you have to do to accelerate in an auto is mash the accelerator. In a manual, you get the satisfaction of slamming the shifter from one gear to the next. Not to mention, manual transmissions open you up to techniques like clutch kicking. In short, automatic for performance, manual for fun. I don't know about you, but the decision is pretty damn easy for me to make. I mean, what's the point of performance if you're not having fun?

I think I drive a manual much differently from most people, for me it is all about how soon can I up shift and not bog the engine? I have to be careful the occasional time I downshift for acceleration, as I'm so used to shifting early, I never remember what speed the different gears redline at! "I want to pass this truck who is only going 50," shifts from sixth into fifth and the engine hardly revs any higher, "OK, guess that's the wrong gear." Though under shifting is still probably better then the alternative: downshifting too much and having the engine explode at 10,000 RPM!

I own a automatic car (1979 Chevy Camaro) and a manual (1970 Volvo Amazon) and i have to say, the automatic transmission is slightly better than the manual because when i hit the gas, the car just launches but the Amazon just thinks about it a little bit and then goes, probably something is worn out in the gearbox. And if you havent noticed, im into old cars. And if you own a classic car or any car which isnt a hybrid and someone says like ''Your polluting the enviroment'', which has been said to me ALOT, just dont listen to them because in the end, you are doing what you like and you are happy doing it 😉 Hello from a car enthusiast from Finland 😊

I have a 2008 Lancer GTS with a CVT, and if you dont like the "soullessness" of most CVTs, I think you would enjoy the Lancer's CVT, as it also has an option to shift into a more DCT-style of driving, as it has both paddleshifters and a simple "stick" that you push forwards or backwards to shift between 6 preset gear ratios. The CVT can be fun, as you can hold it right at the point of power endlessly, which for my lancer is about 3500 rpm, or you can shift it into "manual" and have the fun that brings.

  • @TheRguru1

A sequential manual can still be a true manual. Some of them do still have a manually operated clutch, but you only need it for getting going from a standstill. That is unless you consider automatic fuel cutoff and rev-matching to be too much automation.
Also. Basically any kind of automatic can have paddle shifters (even some ordinary family SUVs have them now). And basically all of them do auto rev-matching. These features are not exclusive to the DCT.

Couldn't agree more about the CVt lol, especially those early 2000s CVT.
I had a 2003 Honda Fit. Tuned it with a piggyback (put a few maps on the ECU), headers, downpipe, and HKS exhaust. It's now made around 118whp, It's quite fast and also much more responsive. HOWEVER, that CVT couldn't put the power down instantly from full stop because the differential is fighting with the gearbox on how to put the power down.
But when you get to a certain rpm or speed, the car is actually quite responsive and a bit fun. Honda's usually get their CVTs right, but not Nissan though or Toyota. but a simple piggyback, a tune, and some upgrades can make the car fun but not as fun as dual clutch, manuals, or even traditional Automatics.
but at least my car still gives me good fuel mileage after installing all that mods lol, so issokay.

The fun thing about CVT specially the frist ones made by DAF was they did not have a reverse speed block and caused em to go a little to fast backwards, aka same speed forward was also available going backwards.
This meant a DAF/volvo 66 with had em could do 80 kmh backwards.

The only experience I've ever had with a manual car was when I test drove the Kizashi Susuki at the dealership(they taught me on the spot, even though I didn't buy it). It was a CVT but it had a clutch. I actually did that at two different dealerships. lol. Wasn't hard to learn, just put the pedal down and shift apparently somewhere halfway for both the gas and clutch. I did stall trying to reverse however. I've had a g35 03 coupe, and two kia optimas, none of which were manuals, but I plan on buying a 2018 Kia Stinger GT2 later this year so I guess I wont be accustomed to driving a manual for a very very long time.

CVT is actually fairly standard on two-wheeled vehicles. Also it is invented by DAF, a formerly Dutch car manufacturer who only used CVT and manual gearboxes.
The cars got the rep for being insanely fast in reverse (just as fast as forward = over 80 km/h)and were actually raced that way on Dutch national television (it's why they have gone from 'everywhere' to serious crown jewels in some collections, they got wrecked every week for over ten years!).
Also they had the moniker of 'Granny's car' because you didn't have to manually shift gears.

The automatic transmission has more moving parts but it’s really not too difficult on how it works. Everything works off of fluid pressure faster the engine spins faster the fluid pump builds pressure and with the help of the engine computer and transmission computer it determines by driver feedback of the gas pedal and engine rpms and speed of the vehicle when too shift by open the solenoid valves releasing that fluid pressure to engage the clutch bands and hold that gear in place. The torque converter is also responsible is acting like a clutch and allows slippage when vehicle is in gear and stoped at a traffic light.

  • @TheCrazed6295
    @TheCrazed6295 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I hate to bring back such an old video, but actually, the sequential manual transmission is basically a manual transmission that has the gears ordered to actuate with the rotation of a shift barrel, instead of cables like a regular manual, as well as (most of the time) dog ring engagement, making it basically only suitable in racecars like the 911 GT3 Cup car, as well as giving it the unique ability to clutchless upshift. With all this said, it is the same type of transmission like you'd find in a bike. The shift peg rotates the selector drum, which moves the dogs to the other side to engage the next gear. However, the SMG in the BMW E60 M5 and M6 of the same era is basically just an electronically actuated single clutch manual (like the Lamborghini E-gear in the Aventador).

With Wut u were saying about paddle shifters becoming more common you are right since my friends mum has a Toyota suv with paddle shifters although it is the “sport” version whereas the regular doesn’t have shifters

I remember when I was a carwash porter at a BMW dealership, and I was in either an M5 or an M6 with that odd transmission. It was cool, and fun and all. But, I can totally see why people hate it. It's a bit clunky to me.

This was just a thought I've had all day, but maybe you should do a video on different types of tires and which conditions to use them best. And which states you'd recommend them in like NY where it sees all four seasons compared to a state in the west coast like Cali where it's relatively hot all year-round.

I don't know what SMT is, but sequential trensmission is one of the best thing to have in a race car.
    And super common in motorbikes.
And in british deathmachines like Ariel, or Caterham.
    Or in track oriented cars.
Or in Pagani Hiura. Or F1 cars.
So, in fact if you are serious about having a competitive trackmachine, you probably will end up with a sequential.
But it sucks for daily driving, thats true too.

I was shifting through gears in the automatic using the paddle shifters and I thought d stood for initial d, so when I put it in d I tried to drift. My tires aren't happy and I'm happy I didnt crash.

Sentra owner here, CVTs are efficient and soulless but the belt is their Achilles heel. It's made of metal and as trans fluid breaks down and mile rack up, you will get belt slippage and that can royally mess things up on the inside.
My sentra has eco, normal and sport modes. I used to switch between these bc that's what I thought it was meant for.
Please don't ever do this. I'm glad I had a warranty with my car bc I'm 99% sure this is what wore the belt out so quick. It started slipping.
The other thing to know about CVT is it absolutely needs fluid changes. I was told early on that "it's a sealed system and doesn't need trans fluid changes". That is a load of horse manure.
The oil we put in cars is also a sealed system and will eventually break down and get all chunky. That's why we change it. Don't neglect lube for your car. It will deteriorate and will need flushing/ replacing. It absolutely needs service and you should check your manual and try to follow as rigidly as you can to manufacturer spec.
Remember that warranty I mentioned, that got me a new transmission bc I went nearly 78K without transmission maintenance. Learn from my mistakes, please.
Another thing, don't run CVT without warming up. The trans fluid does a worse job at lubing when it's cold. It has an operation temperature. Improper temperature mixed with higher RPM will ruin the belt quickly. It's not really made for high RPMs, it's strength is maintaining highway speed at lower RPM.
The sweet spot for my Sentra is about 80MPH. Any faster and it's working too hard, any lower and you're leaving speed on the table.
Thank you for reading this. Please treat your CVT well and remember to change the fluid on time according to manufacturer spec.

CVT's have been around a while. The late 60's if memory serves me correct. It's an interesting yet brittle design and they have been limited to smaller vehicles for a reason.
I'll stick with my manual transmissions. They get me where I need to go and double up as an anti theft device.
