  • Hello sailors. In this week's episode we welcome new crew aboard and take them sailing in the Sound of Mull. We'll learn a valuable lesson about anchoring in a mooring field without a tripping line, catch mackerel for dinner and watch some of West Highland Yachting Week.
    Thanks to www.yachtingimages.co.uk who kindly allowed to use a couple of images and some of their beautiful footage from West Highland Yachting Week.

    Shame about the anchor, can only think that was a rouge boulder down there and an unlucky spot. I have stopped diving now but still carry a 5L cylinder and basic kit on board. Not needed so far. BTW some superb diving in the sound, including a wreck against an underwater cliff. However, you were right to not try and free dive that in cold water.
    Love the way locals offer visitors fresh fish. We bought two superb bass recently off the trawler, just superb.

      Always a fan of the fishermen! And they don’t try to rip you off either, which is also brilliant. We got a couple of bass from a boat in Portland, they were absolutely the finest bass we had ever tasted!

    Ouch that was expensive. Just bought 75m of 10mm and a 15kg spade not cheap.

    There is a specific tool to get the anchor unstuck and up (I'm sure it has a name)...it's relatively heavy steel ring that slides down to the anchor chain all the way down to the anchor and it is attached to a separate line so you can go around and give it a pull from different angles.
    Not the same as trying to pull it around with the original chain especially if there's 11m of water. Pretty sure the channel Fair Isle had to use it once...here's the link th-cam.com/video/wYmcS-imG_4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tcW2Ge_Sq6DluKW1

      I had seen that before! When your anchor is as expensive as theirs, it makes sense to have that ring. Just the ring is more than twice the cost of our anchor! Do you know if there are cheaper rings available?

      @@sailinghjem Called an Alderney ring, but think it requires a planning hull and speed to quickly lift the anchor. Not sure what happens if the anchor doesn't come out and you are doing 20 knots.

      @@sailinghjem I think one could make one quite easily himself to be honest. But then again our boat is totally self build so maybe I'm biased on what people can or cannot do.
      No alternative source because never searched for one

    It would be nice if you'd attached a line and bouy / fender to the chain and anchor that you dumped on the sea bed and paid to get it recovered. Why leave for someone else to get tangled in .

    • @sailinghjem
      @sailinghjem  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, that would’ve preference by far, but we were in the middle of nowhere and we needed to get off. There was no one around to help, we checked at Lochaline and at Tobermory!

    quick fix for windspeed use a handheld annometer shame about the anchor , pity no divers were around mark it up come back for it later

      @sailinghjem  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! Hadn’t even thought to check for such a thing, thanks for the suggestion! That’s the thing, we were in the middle of nowhere, there was no one around at all to help. We do have the coordinates of where it is sitting just in case we ever get back there!
