This is majorly under reported!!! A product this niche having THIS MANY issues is MAJOR NEWS. Jif peanut butter had a salmonella outbreak and of the millions of people who eat jif peanut butter they had only 16 hospitalizations! So the people saying recall is a normal thing in food are trying to minimize the severity of this news

I am SO sorry for everyone that was effected by this product. I had a near exact experience in October 2021 (not from eating this product, it was something else) and after visiting the ER several times, high liver enzymes, gallbladder stones, diarrhea, blurry vision, popping ears, itching... NOBODY could figure out what was wrong with me and it eventually got to the point where anxiety was blamed and everyone dismissed me. This situation has made me feel so validated in what I went through. I speculated it was possibly the chicken wings I had eaten from a restaurant, because I fell violently after eating that. I am STILL effected to this day from it and still haven't been treated, so I am afraid my liver may be permanently damaged. (Sorry to go off topic with my own experience, but these things happen!! Don't let your doctor call you crazy)

You are kind of the YT authority on this company, so this was frighteningly interesting, considering your previous postings. I'm a trained cook and, boy, the stories I could tell about _regulated_ food service, so what this suggests is that with these small scale meal delivery companies with minimal regulation, the customer has no idea about the chain of custody of ingredients/their sourcing, or even the preparation of the food products themselves. These could be made in a commissary God knows where, and that is why a food additive almost unknown here can end up in a ready-to-heat or eat product. Your instincts are good, Marielle. Thanks for posting!

Thank you for covering this! I discovered your channel through one of your Daily Harvest videos and have got a few boxes from them (luckily not recently and not the lentil crumbles). Also, I first learned about people getting sick from this on your Instagram. Very scary, and the way DH has handled it makes me never want to order from them again. I need to think carefully about the other food deliveries I’ve been getting too. If Tara was the toxic ingredient I wonder if DH was trying to find a cheap source of protein and relying on misguided trust that anything natural and plant-based must be good for you.

I am just now watching this. Catching up on your vids! I also remember when all this was going down because I was an avid Daily Harvest customer at the time. Obviously I have hesitated since to order their products again. It's just a reminder that a lot of the vegan food market is super new. There's a lot of scrambling to create novel meat free products. On the one hand, it's great that there are so many meat alternatives now, on the other hand it means that there are a lot of companies out there willing to cut corners in order to be the first to innovate. There was also news with Beyond Meats cutting corners. Plants can kill. Just because something is "all natural" or vegan, it doesn't mean that there aren't mistakes that can be made to make the food unsafe to eat. Be careful out there everyone! I love trying new foods as much as the next person but if you don't understand what it is (regardless of whether it's natural, vegan, plant based, or whatever) you probably should avoid it. It's definitely on a much different scale vs actual food poisoning but I remember back in the day when all the butter alternatives were made with hydrogenated soybean oil. I have been lactose intolerant for a long time but because we had family friends who were chemists telling us to avoid it, our family never bought that stuff. We used all the other dairy free alternatives but still bought real butter, and now hydrogenated soybean oil is illegal. Anyway, just because something is vegan, it doesn't mean it's good for you and it definitely doesn't mean it can't make you ill. Just be careful, read labels. Now with the internet, you can research literally every ingredient under the sun. Just be careful everyone! This won't be the last time this happens with how popular Direct to Consumer groceries have gotten, especially since the pandemic.

Very disturbing. They had some great products (specifically the smoothies which were SO convenient and for the most part really tasty), but the fact that the people affected have never, to this day, gotten any closure is really alarming and infuriating.

@@TotallyForkable Disturbing indeed! I'm still on their email lists and they don't make any mention of the past issues. I feel bad for all the folks out there who are unwittingly signing up for their services, not knowing of what they could be potentially risking!
I'm relieved that I never ended up trying the crumbles. They really did look good (they have great marketing!) and I wanted to try them but their prices were simply too high for what I thought it was at the time. I really thought it was over priced TVP. No one would have gotten sick if they just stuck to tried and true ingredients. Although, I must admit that I did like trying the novel ingredients at DH, but usually they highlight their novel ingredients. This was the first time they didn't highlight the novel plant based ingredient in a product on the outset. It took months to figure out what ingredient was actually causing the problem.

Yes--at that time I was in the habit of ordering new Daily Harvest products to make video reviews. I am SO happy that I hadn't gotten around to ordering the crumbles. It's really such a shame bc I know a lot of non-vegans buy Daily Harvest and I can't help but think it must have given people a negative association with plant meats as this was DH's first foray into the category and they f***ed it up so royally 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thank you for breaking this down. I've never tried Daily Harvest, but I don't usually buy box meals. As a long term vegan, I recommend having a good can opener available, having no salt added canned beans and chick peas available, having some vegan bread available (pumpernickel, wheat or rye - check ingredients, some brands include dairy) and of course sriracha and a mixed spice bottle. Also get some peanuts only peanut butter. This way, you'll never find yourself short of a meal. :)

Sad that I'm considering being a customer 🤦 but it's the plant based & convenience that I love. I can't believe they're still selling the lentils or at least not pausing until investigation is over. This is an example of customers being before profit. It shouldn't mean customers get to be jerks. It should mean don't send them to the ER with medical expenses then cover it up & then still sell it 🤷

It's truly shocking that they have essentially "gotten away" with it. I follow a few accounts that were created by consumers who were affected on Twitter and it has very much not been made right with the victims.
I understand what you're saying. I was wondering to myself the other day if there's another service that offers that level of convenience and quality when it comes to their smoothies. I do miss that convenience, but honestly don't see myself ever ordering from them again.

I was a customer for a long time. I can't say that I would order from them again but in hindsight some of their recipes were interesting. I would often find myself ordering things that I knew I could easily recreate at home. They turned me onto gigante beans for example. I frequently use convenience foods this way. So glad I never tried those crumbles! I thought they looked good but I just couldn't figure out what they actually were. I honestly thought it was highly seasoned TVP and thought it was way over priced so I never tried it! I was so wrong! But still glad I didn't try it!

Interesting thank you so much for posting this I was saying on Twitter how I really wanted my box to come in , and then someone told me they were poisoned. That makes me sad the especially food regulations not sure why I’m surprised. I actually like their oatmeal bowls and some of their smoothies but i know how to remake everything it was more of the convenience factor. But I’m going to see if any of the products I have were mentioned, I’m really hoping it wasn’t but I do plan on not ordering anymore. I also really enjoy purple carrot, I watched your last purple carrot video and don’t remember you mention it being scammy. Yes it's definitely a bummer about Daily Harvest because they do have some good products, and I agree it's disappointing to hear about the (lack of) regulations across the board. I don't think Purple Carrot is scammy, I just have mentioned in most of my "food delivery service review" videos that I don't love the structure of "we take your card and charge you weekly" being the only payment option; overall I think it's a bit of a scammy sales tactic. I have heard good things about Splendid Spoon and think I will try them next! I would love to get into gardening too; not sure what you mean with the water though?!

Is Tannic acid toxic to humans?
Tannic acid is moderately toxic by the inhalation and ingestion exposure pathways. Acute, high-dose ingestion and absorption may cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and liver damage. Severe intoxication's may result in centralobular liver necrosis.
Easy to think its a gallbladder problem if you don't know what caused the problem.
Environmental changes like fungi, bacteria, viruses, herbivores, and rough harvesting practices could cause the tarra trees to produce extra tannin's for extra protection. These trees are living beings too and i feel like they are protesting over harvest and unfair living conditions (global warming) with tannic picket signs. which is good for leather but bad for human health. obviously we need more quality controls for tannic acid concentrations in foods (especially tree based foods) now since environments are rapidly changing due to global warming and possible pole shifts.

The main issue is how they handled the situation and their lack of transparency which most likely led to way more people getting sick. They essentially tried to sweep it under the rug, which, when people are having to have organs removed, is unacceptable. Also, as I understand, they STILL have not identified what caused this to happen. Idk about you but I wouldn’t be too keen to order from a company that hasn’t figured out why one of their products was making people violently ill.
