PS4 Gaming on an old CRT TV in 2019... (The CRT ASMR)

  • Just a quick video about a strange setup. No commentary or background music. For the best experience, watch in 1080p and use headphones.
    The PS4 is not compatible with CRT TVs by default because it does not have any analog video output. To solve this issue, I'm using a HDMI2AV converter box which converts digital HDMI signal to analog composite video and audio.
    You can buy the HDMI2AV converter box here:

    • @Red05x

      This is something that confuses me... If the HDR TV can (in theory) have a LOT MORE... a LOT MORE colors than a normal CRT TV, Why on the CRT they look more natural and correct? I really like how the colors look on my CRT 21" and I jut CAN'T reproduce the same color on my OLED B7. On my Plamsa GT25 the colors look almost the same, but the blacks are still better on the CRT.

    • @Unethical.Dodgson
      @Unethical.Dodgson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@Red05x CRTs fire electron beams to produce light and colour. A perceived maximum of about 32bits. LCDs are typically only 8bit colour. CRTs also have the bonus of not using pixels at all. So they can produce much sharper images with greater contrast.
      Funnily enough. Much more advanced vacuum tube tech might be coming back, so we might expect to see newly advanced HD CRT monitors on the market in the coming years.

      @@Unethical.Dodgson I would very much hope so. My 32" Zenith in 1080i straight from an analogue source without any adapters (Xbox 360 component cables) may seriously still be the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. • @Jayrod64
    @Jayrod64 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I'm gonna be honest, I wouldn't go any lower than a HDMI to Component Adapter for the PS4, because at least that way, the resolution and clarity isn't limited. Everything else on a CRT is often much better though, with better blacks, higher contrast ratio, and more vibrant colors.

    • @Jayrod64
      @Jayrod64 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @sagittarianwolf9163 That's debatable sometimes. OLED and AMOLED have the ability to display true black because black pixels aren't illuminated. This also creates better contrast ratio, but the problem lies more in the fact a flat panel makes pixel art and sprites way sharper than they actually are. In some cases there's actually more detail visible on a CRT with pixel art than any modern TV.

    • @Jayrod64
      @Jayrod64 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @sagittarianwolf9163 Very true, though it was worse with earlier OLED displays like the the Samsung Galaxy S3 to S5. It can still happen on modern OLED and AMOLED TVs, but there are so many ways to prevent that takes a long time if not forever to see it. Not sure about some of the new OLED monitors, but they may also have measures to prevent OLED burn in.

    Yikes!, due to your choice of cable (that is composite, though it looks far better than I would expect from such a low bandwidth cable), the CRT is a long way from looking as good as it can (that's putting it politely), and it can look stunning with a PS4 with the right cable choice, even if you had used either S-Video or better yet RPG Scart, on a good 4:3 CRT set RPG via scart can look fantastic, indie games like Shovel Knight, Dig 1&2, Axiom Verge, Cup Head, can look stunning via RGB on a good CRT, giving them that proper classic CRT look that games like these were aiming for in the first place. I just realized this is an HD CRT, so you could have even used component for proper 1080i (or 720p which I personally prefer as it's progressive), which would look amazing and look far better than even the most expensive LCD sets out there, unless you were using composite on purpose, to get as much of a low-fi image as possible out of the TV, but I doubt that, maybe that's all you had to hand.
