Modern PC Gaming on a CRT

  • CRT's are fabulous, mighty creatures that remind us of a simpler time.
    But can they offer the modern PC gamer benefits today?
    Their fast refresh rates, and instant response times make twitchy FPS titles more enjoyable- and their blacks are to die for.
    -- THE FLICKERING, is only generated by my silly camera and in real life, is not present at all.
    To test, we are using a Sony Multiscan GDM-500PS Trinitron Monitor and a few of my favourite PC titles such as Chivalry Medieval Warfare, Left 4 Dead 2, Minecraft, GTA V and CS:GO

      If you really want a big, high-refresh CRT, look for the HP p1230. It has pretty much the same guts as the Sony presented above, but it can do much higher resolutions and refresh rates.(h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c00355202)
      I have one of these beasts and it can do 2048x1536 at 85Hz. Or if you find that resolution is too high, it can do 1600x1200 at 120 Hz!
      The only downside (not mentioned in the video, BTW) is that it uses about as much power as a gaming PC. And after about an hour of staring into it you'll want to gouge your eyes out. But the insane refresh rate is totally worth it.

      Michael Jhonny Well the CRT probably has a VGA cable on it so you can just buy a VGA to mini display, hdmi, or whatever. Just look up on amazon or eBay, HDMI to VGA adapter. or Mini display to VGA adapter. I am actually using a mini display to VGA adapter right now for my CRT.

  • @cloudskipa

    CRT technology is still superior to LCD and Plasma in a number of ways. The fact it can handle a multitude of resolutions without any form of upscaling needed, the complete lack of input latency and on top of that it has perfect motion resolution. Talk about perfect gaming tech.
    The drawback is the size, weight, life span and price to manufacture which is why it was ditched for the cheaper LCD tech. Only now since around 2014 companies like Sony are catching up to CRT technology with super low latency panels coupled to BFI strobing technology offering some of the benefits of the mighty CRT.

    • @realgroovy24
      @realgroovy24 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +cloudskipa I agree with everything you said but life span? CRT's I've found have had far better life spans than any flatscreen, the ability to be repaired if a CRT fails is better than any flatscreen I've seen

    • @cloudskipa
      @cloudskipa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sony Trinitron Well from my own experience I've found CRT to have a poor lifespan overall, there's a lot of things that can degrade due to the magnetism (if you don't have a degause function) so picture quality and geometry also suffers over time. They can also be quite volatile and I've known a few poeple who have had their tube implode and catch fire to the house. I've really only owned mid to higher end LCD and I would say flourescent backlight is on par with a tube for lifespan but LED edge or backlit is far superior.

    • @sinephase
      @sinephase 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +cloudskipa don't forget colour uniformity/viewing angles! :D

    • @cloudskipa
      @cloudskipa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sinephase Very true! and still a problem for many non-IPS LCD used today. One of the biggest issues is still backlight bleeding especially from LED edge lit LCD and a certain amount of clouding and imperfect light uniformity is considered "normal" even on high end sets. It's sad what's happened really, first CRT then Plasma.

    • @sinephase
      @sinephase 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      even IPS doesn't have the same uniformity and viewing angles like a CRT does

    I know quite a few graphic artists who still insist on using CRT monitors as the colours are more accurate than LCD/LED screens.

I also have to admit my eyes hurt after staring at it for a long time, it feels like it flickers light into my eyes. The good thing though is i was able to run my games at 85 hertz instead of 60, which looked kinda smoother but just isnt worth it imo. If hertz and response time is what's important to you then just get a 144 Hz G-Sync monitor.

    We can sit here and laugh at CRTs and VGA but we must remember that the image that we see on our modern equipment is all analog. CRTs are analog and their VGA interface is the highest quality RGB analog video source in existence. We must respect the purity of this old technology and where it has brought us to this day. Right now I'm typing this on a PC with only a 1080P G-Sync display that can't touch the resolution or black-levels of this decades old Sony Trinitron. Sad...

    People think the old farts are just being negative about the technology of today, but CRT's were truely superior, in nearly every way, except how easy it is on the eyes. For office workers, LCD's were a blessing, no more 60hz flicker headaches. Of course, CRT's addressed that issue with a higher refresh rate, and THIS is the exact reasoning behind the refresh rate craze, and why more was always better. Most good CRT's were 85-120hz, since a lot of people had problems with 60hz flicker. Response time on CRT's is decided by the length of the monitor cable, and is basically 0. The colors depend heavily on the monitor, but CRT's have a natural problem with their brightness fading over time. So most CRT's you find today suffer from tube age, and are not very bright, causing dark scenes to be a problem. Dimming brightness is solely an issue with the ceasing of manufacturing of CRT monitors tho, since when they begin dimming, it was normally time to replace them.

    • @xan1242
      @xan1242 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Smith Exactly the issue with mine. I need to amplify the RGB signals one way or another to get a proper gamma (and brightness) off of my LG T710PU. I'm very sad about it and there's unfortunately nothing much I can do about it... Maybe replace the flyback but that wouldn't help against aging of the tube itself, and most of CRT production has ceased around 2011. I know Sony still makes some CRTs, but those are for hospitals and they're more like PVMs rather than computer monitors.

      xan1242 CRTs fade because of the phosphors on the screen burning out. Knowing the reason doesn't really instill much hope in fixing it.

      Richard Smith Yea I know. I'm not sure about oscilloscopes, are they still being made with CRTs as well or are they now made with LCDs? (not counting ones you plug in your computer etc.)

      xan1242 Modern oscilloscopes are LCD as well.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The issue with phosphers was not an issue in the absorption to emission time, but the decay time of the emission. This could cause ghosting and color bleeding.
      It was the off time which had a potential for delay, not the on time.
      I pointed out the cable length was the bottleneck in jest, to point out that response time was not even a consideration. That was meant as a joke. It was a non-issue.
      The issue comes in due to digital decoding, which although does allow for precise pixel perfect pictures, it introduces inherit latency since those signals must be processed.

      No Name That's actually why they're so good at motion though. An image pulses brightly for brief period of time and then the phosphors dim until the next refresh.
      This produces wonderfully natural motion, because the older an image is, the dimmer it is. Objects moving across the screen don't appear to be moving in stop-motion like they do on LCDs at refresh rates < 240 Hz ;)

    Issues I have with CRT. Darker and hard to see, The annoying transistor noise or tube noise that some of us with sensitive hearing can hear. The weight of them. Lack of modern DVI-HDMI ports that most Graphics cards only come with. Price per month $20-40 hike in power bill.

    • @SgtPnkks
      @SgtPnkks 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      darker and hard to see? CALIBRATE, first step of any monitor regardless of panel type should always be to properly calibrate... the other concerns are (mostly) valid, my last CRT was the quietest i owned but at times i could hear the noise especially if you pushed the resolution closer to it's 2048x1536 max, it was a boat anchor, only had VGA, and $20-40/mo is a stretch... but it did use considerably more juice and put out some warmth

    • @TauCu
      @TauCu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The noise is actually from the HV Transformer, not the transistors LOL.

      I think you might have had some bad experiences with CRTs ): I dug one out of my neighbor's trash pile and it's surprising bright and crisp for it's age. I don't use it for either of my main PCs, but when I get a windows 98 setup going I'll use it for that. You're right, not a lot of modern applications for CRTs, but if you want to go retro it's a lot easier to use a CRT for older systems.

    • @MsHojat
      @MsHojat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Wolf
      Unless you're running a completely fanless system _and_ have the PC in a room that is isolated from other noise in the home (venting system, outside noise) there's no way that you'd notice any sort of hum. In fact, I've been to many quiet computer labs filled with CRTs and never noticed any monitor hum, nor any of the CRTs I've used at home.
      Price per month is not such a large difference. It's like 60 watts more, and when factoring in that it's turned off when not in use, adds less total wattage. at 8 hours a day, and 10 cents per kilowatthour that's only $1.40 per month.
      Video cards frequently come (or came, and hence can easily get adapters for cheap or free) with adapters to VGA, so that's not a problem either.
      One of the only significant problems with CRT is their weight, but considering that they're almost never moved, I don't see how it's at all relevant unless going to a LAN party (and even in that case, they aren't too heavy to transport, as people used to do it all the time. There's also the option of just bringing a different monitor instead.).

In competitive gaming it is in fact the best and most used option.

      Good modern monitors have great response times. 1-4 ms is really good. Sure it's still thousands of times slower than a CRT, but that's irrelevant because the gap between one us and one ms isn't detectable to a human.
      Modern LCDs also have better refresh rates, which makes for smoother gameplay.
      I like my CRT, but LCDs have finally caught up to them as long as you have the cash to pay for good ones. (I got my CRT for free)

      +Mshojat Response time is a completely useless spec, used as a marketing.
      What is important is for example pixel transition for all colors and signal delay; the real input lag(CRT has 0 signal delay, your typical IPS has about 30-40 ms), you can read more on the internet.

    • @MrGencyExit64
      @MrGencyExit64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +dacasman You can 100% tell the difference between an LCD with a theoretical instant response time and a CRT simply because the LCD's pixel brightness doesn't falloff over time and this creates terrible motion artifacts unique to LCD. Sample-and-hold is the worst thing ever to happen to gaming. LCD was supposed to be a stop-gap technology before OLED or SED, but it has long outlived its welcome.

    • @theindiediary5950

I don't recall the mass gaming population ever stopping mid game on their brand new lcd monitor and say, 'down with this sort of thing! There's a huge difference. Look when I move left, it very noticeably takes 1/1000 of a second longer for the response! We have been had! or sumfin like that. :O
      Unfortunately just like the flat Earthers, these people exist.

    • @MrGencyExit64
      @MrGencyExit64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mikee Remastered Very funny. If you actually read what I wrote instead of being an ignorant jackass, you would understand why pixel response time is meaningless.
      An OLED, which has pixel response time measured in nanoseconds is inherently no better than an LCD with a pixel response time of say 1 ms if they both sample-and-hold. You can reduce this number to 0 if you want and it doesn't change the real problem.
      www.blurbusters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/sampleandhold1.gif
      On the left, is how motion behaves in the real-world. In the middle is how a low-persistence display (e.g. CRT, plasma, DLP) works and on the right is how LCD and most OLEDs currently on the market work.
      And below, you can see the problem created by this stair-step motion:
      www.blurbusters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/sampleandhold2.gif
      The only way to fix that problem is to jack refresh rate up much higher than it needs to be. Changing pixel response time does jack squat assuming it's less than 1/refresh rate.

    Serious Question: I hear that CRTs (depending on brand and quality control) usually last upwards of 15-20 years before the tube goes bad. Now it's next to impossible to find anyone who is willing to work on one. I want to know if there's some way to test a CRT to estimate how much longer it has to live? There's some really good CRTs I grabbed for free off Craigslist (Sony Trinitron Multiscan 200sx, the some-what decent Viewsonic Optiquest Q95 and a Gateway VX900) all of which I've restored via Retr0bright for days on end. My IBM G70 is starting to become more and more violent when turning on/off and I fear the worst has yet to come. How can I safely test and calculate how much longer these new monitors have before their demise? Otherwise, is there any safe haven left that still works and repairs CRTs? For the love of all things analog, who here can save them!?

    A CRT may be better because they have better response times than LCD and can produce better blacks since they do not have a back-light. But to me, it is not worth the extra space and lower non-HD resolution.
    Also, any monitor over 120 Hz is a waste of money because your eyes cannot detect the difference. 144 and 240 Hz monitors sell because the specs sound better on paper and manufacturers just use it as a way to justify the extra cost.

      non hd resolution? a midrange CRT around year 2000 (older too, but more into hirange) could do 1280x1024 with ease. Consider its 4:3 aspect ratio, is just shorter at sides than FHD because its shape.
      I own a 2003 CRT on my main PC. its "non-hd" resolution is 2304x1440 80hz by stock and can be pushed up to 2560x1660 60hz! (it's a 16:10 monitor, Sony FW900 )
      also, lowering resolution to 1600*1200, allows 120hz, so you can use active 3D with better performance than LCDs ""designed"" for such task.

      It´s pretty hard, to SEE the difference between 120Hz and 144Hz (and above), when the image is displayed continuously. (A single image pop at eg 1/200 of a second is easily noticeable by many people.)
      Nevertheless you can FEEL the difference between 120 and 144 - it feels much smoother and more responsiv. It´s even more obvious when you´re going back from 144Hz to 120Hz. The important thing here is that you have to be used for a short time, playing on high frequencies, and you´re fps keeps the pace.
      The benefit of playing on high frequencies and fps might not be instantaneously obvious for most, especially people who have no experiences or even never played above 120Hz, but i´ts no marketing gag at all. It even was demanded from high grade gamers (not only "pro" gamers).

    Modern LCDs are still better. Tired of seeing hipsters talking about CRTs.

      You think only hipsters care about CRT? Go to literally any serious gaming tournament, and tell me what kind of screens they're playing on. As an analogue piece of tech, CRT still rules the roost when it comes to latency and response times.

      Sam Sales Now a days all the gaming tournaments I've seen have been using LCD screens for many years now. When I go to LANs I'm like the only person there with a CRT.

      It depends how modern you're talking. If you're buying an 8 Megapixel LCD screen that goes to 144 Hz, sure, but you're also going to be paying like $600-2000 for one.
      I got my flat screen 3 Mpx CRT 8 years ago for free and it's worked great. It's only been in the past couple of years where the resolution and refresh rate have finally started to surpass CRT, but one has to dish out a ton of cash to get one still.
