  • The Sony KD-30XS955 was one of Sony's last CRT TVs made for the WEGA line. Unlike most CRTs, this one has an HDMI input. In this video, I go over some the features of the 30XS955, as well as some pros and cons.

imagine how far display tech would be if they had simply contnued to expand crt tech instead of swapping to lower tech lcds and having to start over with response times/hz. Id for sure buy a modern day crt if such a thing existed.

I often think about the same thing. They are so much more reliable than current monitors and such. Also, some of the CRT monitors made in the late 90's and early 2000's were way ahead of their time.

Driving 12 hours round trip from Northeast FL to central GA tomorrow to pick one of these babies up!
The lag was barely noticeable even with 0.25x on. I bet half of it was just the latency of the wireless controller.

I have this exact TV and it's my favorite TV of all time. And I own multiple plasmas, a high end FALD LCD and an LG CX OLED. My Kuros are my second favorite.
But this CRT has the best combination of image quality, low input lag and fantastic motion clarity and smoothness.

I agree. There just something special about playing your current gen consoles on a CRT like there. I will admit that the color saturation takes a bit getting used to but this can be fixed or adjusted in the menus. Overall, the colors and black levels are very nice on these TVs.

Back in the day, hdmi didn't have audio, my first cable box required me to use analog in for the audio back when this tv came out.
I'm sure someone mentioned below but the control 3.5mm in/out is to control other sony components like their vcr/dvd/avr systems. This if you had them remotely stored away, then the TV would repeat their IR signals down the chain. You missed the cable card (which is just a built in cable box feature so you can rent the card from a cable company instead of a set top box). VHF/UHF is a direct antenna input while the Cable RF is for direct to the wall cable connection if you didn't have your own set top box. Usually back then the TVs could tune up to 125 channels. Anything beyond that would require a set top cable box. Back in the 90s, a cable ready TV set was a thing to save people on renting the set top box.
You can stretch the picture to fit if you wanted using the wide button but its not worth it. Calibration on these flat screen sets are always wonky, CRTs are meant to be curved so without magnets and other tools, so I've also accepted the imperfections that come with owning these units. My own set actually doesn't even accept 480p correctly, only 720p and up works; analog 480p circuits are messed up for some reason.

I passed over this one at Circuit City for the more-expensive KV-30XBR910 with the stand ($2,300; $200 stand was only “free” after a $200 merchandise card). It looks like it would fit my stand because it is the same design. In 2009 they threw out an XS955 where I was working in San Diego but I couldn’t bring it back to Georgia with me and had to leave it.

Oh yeah, these were not cheap back in the day. Definitely a premium product. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel the 910/955/960/970 WEGA HD CRTs have aged very well, even with their output resolution limitations.

Great video as always man! We dont have this models in Russia but I've found nice 36" Toshiba HD CRT for 480p/720p/1080i content. Looks also awesome kinda like yours. But it doesn't have hdmi, only component. So I use HDfury X4 to convert hdmi to component AND it can downscale 1080p to 720p. In the end I got downscaled 1080p on 720p on CRT and its beautiful 🤩

Your showing how it performs with various resolutions/consoles was freaking neat. How does this compare to your FW900 and BVM D24 for 720p/1080i stuff? It's a SFP tube (1440x1080i) while most other HD Trinitrons have only a Hi-Scan tube (853x1080i). I've a 30HS420 and I love it for 7th and 8th gen consoles but do you think a SFP tube would improve the image by much?

    • @Ex_Savior
      @Ex_Savior  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

When it comes to 720p and 1080i, the D24 doesn’t really show much of a difference between the two. As for the 955, 1080i actually looks way better than 720p. I’m assuming this has something to do with the SFP tube. From what I’ve seen, 720p is a bit softer in terms of image quality. It’s also safe to say that the D24 looks way better than the 955 lol. I’ve never owned a 30HS420 before, but I would assume that the SFP enhances the sharpness of higher resolution content. Would be nice to see a side by side one day.

@@Ex_Savior 1080i has twice the resolution, so I'd expect it to look better than 720p. Unless you just can't stand the flicker. I had to set my Wii U to 720p cuz my boyfriend couldn't stand the flicker of interlaced video.

A lot of older hd TVs don’t have the option to remove the overscan on the hdmi input. I had an older Panasonic lcd that did this and I think the only way around the overscan issue was to use the vga pc input. I don’t think your issue is related to any resolution mismatch on 1080i signals I think it’s just the way most early hd TVs were.

get yourself an external scaller device and avoid internal processing with all costs. all super fine pitch HD CRT's from Sony are processing 480i/480p/720p/1080i internally and output it as 540p. so you need an external scaller capable to do 540p or let you program your own custom resolution an timings to fit in that 33.7khz deflection frequency. Kramer VP-728 should do the job.

This made me lose faith in LED TV every LED TV models to my eye are all trash. Sony perfect the picture quality on Sony WEGA in 1998 and in 2024 All Mini-LED TV don’t look quarter as good as the Sony WEGA. I hope LED TV go extinct soon they are too crap. 4K mean nothing if black level is horrible along with blurry motions. My Toshiba CRT TV performed 100x better than Hisense U9G
