    From the spec here I think the CRV using same technology as my 2018 Accord hybrid. I like the fact that, like my Accord, CRV doesn’t have auto or cvt transmission. I would take CRV over RAV4 for this reason.

    I have been looking at both of these hybrids as the Honda is yet to get to Australia. What a great review! I just love the banter between the two of you that I would be doing if someone was shopping those cars with me. I fully concur with one of the other comments- you should do a co-review as a regular gig as you have got something special here. Thanks for taking the effort to look over these cars in detail and talk about the differences, for different people with different tastes and dimensions. Just gold...!

    Great review Bob and Sinead. I really like the idea of the twin review and the direct comparisons. Very professional, natural and honest review with great chemistry between you both. This is screaming out to become a regular series. Having been both a Toyota and Honda driver over the years (now VW), I think I’d go with the Honda for the slightly superior level of finish and sound deadening etc, as I think a vehicle like this is not necessarily bought for driving performance but on levels of comfort. The lack of Apple carplay/Android auto is astonishing across the Toyota range. The lack of a spare wheel in the Honda is also a big negative in my book. Great job 👍

    I just purchased the Rav 4 AWD hybrid in USA and drive it at 1,341 meters above sea level using 85 octane fuel (Euro RON 90)
    The RAV 4 hybrid uses a eCVT that operates on a planetary gear system using electric motors to keep the gear at the optimum range.
    Planetary gears are stronger and will last longer than the CVT the CRV uses which is a pulley and belt system.
    When the belt breaks the CVT will need to be replaced at $5,000 or about £4,000.
    I drive 120 kilometers per hour on the freeway and my Rav 4 is much quieter than your hybrid when you accelerated.
    I am averaging 41 mpg freeway and around town or 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

    • @valdius85
      @valdius85 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The only problem with what you wrote is that iMMD doesn`t use the pulley and belt system. It has one coghwheel "gear" for motorway speeds. For lower speeds there is no conventional gearbox at all. The combustion engine produces electricity to add it to the e-motor.
      Honda`s system is very similar to Outlander PHEV.
      I suggest you make more research ;)

    • @robc8593
      @robc8593 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. I would like a mixture of both, the driver assistance aids on the Honda were hugely superior to the Toyota ones and the Honda had a marginally better ride but the Toyota is still financially more compelling, as well as the far lower CO2 figure.

    Congrats to the both of you from the UK. I've been looking at these 2 as potential company cars for my wife , to try and reduce the BIK tax. I like the CRV a lot, but the 120gms/kilometre push up the taxation quite a bit compared to the 2wd RAV 4's 105 grams / kilometre. We've not been out in either at the moment but the CVT in the Toyota worries us, the Honda is supposed to be quieter. When you're doing over 30k miles a year you need the car to be quiet. The RAV 4s larger boot is also a bonus. A great collaboration, let's see more of it. Well done.

      @@BobFlavinVideo Hahaha, I like the Rav 4 best in white! Cheers from the USA! I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time, and my '99 Toyota is still tearing up the highways here between rows of corn (& soybeans) in the state of Iowa! Based on my history over the last 20 years with 2 hondas ('00 Accord LX & '02 Civic LX) and 2 Toyotas ('95 Camry LE & '99 Camry XLE), I'll be going with the Toyota each and every time! My 2 Hondas I owned for much shorter time periods, one got a bad transmission and suspension parts failing too soon (under 50K miles), the other with intermittent engine emission & electrical issues. While both of my Toyotas have been solid with only needing normal things like timing belt services, tires, brakes, & struts. Even the Toyotas I bought for my parents have been solid ('99 Avalon, '06 Sienna), only the minivan needing an a/c repair, but that one has been modified for a power ramp/lowering/lift suspension for wheelchair access (modified interior/floor, electrical, fuel/emission lines & a/c systems).

    We drove a Rav 4 Hybrid LE and were disappointed in it's driving dynamics. It does not come close to a 'driver's car". A Sienna SE drives better, and a 4th Generation Prius 3 Touring is superior, also. So, the question is begged: why did they leave out the engaging experience? Toyota is finally learning to stop producing "numb-driving vehicles", but NOT this model, in the face of the Honda experience. The Honda CRV awaits our comments. Thanks for a good review. Great review from you both. More like this, please. I owned a 2014 2.2L diesel CRV and used it to tow a large caravan all over Europe for two months a couple of years ago - even up and over the Alps in the snow after one of the major road tunnels was closed. The car never missed a beat. But the CRV is regularly beaten by rivals in car reviews as lagging behind and in need of better tech, spec and handling. The usual conclusion is very reliable but boring. Personally, I prefer reliability and safety over everything else. Land Rover models are regularly praised with little or no mention of the appalling reliability. So form over substance seems to win most of the time. I am now looking to change by VW Golf for an SUV with AWD for the soft off roading capability for my many ventures into the often rocky and muddy countryside. A difficult choice as no one car is best at everything. My shortlist at present includes the Kia Sportage, Skoda Karoq, and Seat Alteca. The VW Tiguan was another possibility but it just seems to be a slightly jacked up over-priced Golf - and ugly at that.

    I picked up a 21 plate Honda CR-V Hybrid SR spec in June and it’s a fabulous SUV I’m getting 54 MPG with city driving as I don’t do any motorway miles as Hybrids and motorways don’t make good economical sense. This is my first Honda as I have been with Fords for some years and I swapped due to build quality and MPG and I will be sticking with Honda the Japanese have got it bang on the money with the CR-V I can’t give Honda enough praise with this car it’s fabulous to say the least. Also on a full tank I can get 652 miles what is the to complain about plus Honda have to the ECVT it gets the job done and it works well and it’s not that noisy in my opinion as around town the cabin fall silent you could hear a mouse fart also it drives like a EV car in my sole opinion and the MMI works all the time every time. I can’t say the same for Ford coming from a 18 plate Ford Focus STX in a word glitchy and sometimes the volume would not work and the sat nav is terrible. Honda all the way for me.

    Great comparison. I agree about the noise in the RAV4. When I test drove it, I was trying to convice myself for almost 2 kilometers that it was not very noisy. I eventually gave up and admitted defeat. The cabin was noisy from about 80Km/h. It seemed to be road/tyre and wind noise. Toyota needs to greatly improve the sound proofing. The engine noise did not bother me though since it is noisy only under hard acceleration. Gliding in EV mode in traffic was really terrific.

    Back together again ... I think you have some video and sound kinks to work out, but pleeeeeaaaase continue with this kind of format!!! You work well together and it would just add value to both channels!

    Really they should have tested AWD vs AWD, because the RAV4 AWD uses drive to the rear wheels with an electric motor only, no mechanical driveshaft to the rear, so it seems the set up for an FWD must be different and could therefore affect how the vehicle drives on the road. In the US the Hybrid is only available in AWD.

      You're crazy not to pay a little extra for all wheel drive in Canada. I owned 2 1999 Honda all wheel drive CRVs. The manual transmission one was my fave (I called it my snow buggy because it could go through deep snow easily). Both vehicles ended up getting over 370,000km. Original exhaust system (stainless steel) original struts. The mighty CRV is one of the best cars ever made. They always seem a tad more upscale than the Rav but clearly they are both brilliant long lasting vehicles.

    Hi Bob, interesting review of the two half-hybrids. I commented previously on the older Mitsubishi PHEV- I have just traded for the newer 2.4 l model with the upgraded battery and suspension. You should give it a twirl- a far superior car in every respect. - AND something you did not mention, it can tow up to 1.5 tonnes with a braked trailer as well as having electrical 4WHD. I am sure you would be impressed with the improvements.

    I really liked the twin testing. In the future though could you do twin testing on vehicles that are in the same class and have the same options. I would also like to know the gas mileage. I drive 100 km a day and gas mileage is one of the most important things to me when deciding on which car to buy.

    I'm surprised to see Rav4 2 wheel drive models there. In the US they are all AWD. Also, I believe the CRV has leather upholstery as an option whereas in the US Toyota only offers their imitation leather (Softex). From what I could see of the Rav4 you tested, it was the Softex with fabric inserts. I am waiting for the CRV to be available here. I will probably go with the CRV because I prefer real leather.

    I tested both and at the time I tested RAV 4 hybrid it was available with AWD and that was the clincher, I get average 49.5mpg around town but don't drive it hard, it has 222bhp on the AWD, not huge difference between front WD (219) and AWD (222), but AWD helps take a little sloppyness out of corners. RAV is better

    • @jmw0368
      @jmw0368 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not “RAV is better” at all…..that’s is not factual, it’s only “better” according to your taste and in your opinion.
      So no, that doesn’t mean it’s actually “better”, whatsoever! 🙄

    22:06 - Yes, please, on the twin testing, it brings another level and a different view to each car, when comparing it to its closest market rival. As far, as the "which one do you prefer", I'm most definitely NOT in favor of the SUV/Crossover, etc. hype booming worldwide and I'll be sticking with the traditional sedans (ordered the new Camry Hybrid already).
    Besides, it makes perfect sense, because the manufacturers are trying to lure their customer base back into the "car segment" and they are really stepping up their game with the latest sedans - just look at the Toyota Camry and the Peugeot 508 for example, etc.
    Also, at least in my country (Bulgaria), the Rav4 Hybrid is just about ~500 Euro more expensive for the base model relative to the Camry Hybrid, however it lacks SO many things that base Camry gets. Example, the Rav4 Hybrid doesn't have neither parking sensors, nor a camera in the base trim. It doesn't get automatic windscreen wipers either, it doesn't get a warning for low windscreen fluid, it doesn't get the 7" multimedia center screen like the Camry and it lacks the factory tinted windows relative to the Camry Hybrid... So it's a fairly easy choice in some markets, as long as you don't follow the hype blindly :)
