These people don’t take long term ownership into equation. The reason the Toyota is a best seller is because it has better resale value and will last past 3 years without major issues.

People who only consider Toyota brand vehicles either have wild imaginations about how much time people in 'lesser' brands spend at the mechanic's shop or were all very unlucky and owned some truly horrrid Malaise era junkers. Some Toyota vehicles have been class leading or class competitive but some at times have not been.
For all the supposed enthusiasm for owning the same care for 15 years because it's so reliable, there have been a LOT of Toyotas that I wouldn't want to own for 5 years let alone 15. These include the Toyota Corolla back when it had a 3 or 4 speed automatic transmission years after other cars moved onto 6 speeds. Or the early-mid 2000's Tacoma's which were reliable but pretty horrid to drive.
Personally I've owned 4 GM cars, 1 Volkswagen, 2 Nissans, 1 Ford, and 1 Subaru and none of them were so unreliable that I would even consider the reliability to be a big factor in choosing to buy or not buy the same brand again. Most of them were with me past 100K miles and none were ditched early because of mechanical issues. Would all of them have been effortless to keep running to 300K miles? Probably not, but honestly, when I get into my mother's 260K mile old Camry I mostly feel like I'm in an old car with outdated crash standards, a floaty floppy ride and a stereo with a CD player that hasn't worked in 150K miles. It hardly makes me green with envy.

Kia is up there. I have Toyota, Mazda, and a Kia between 2017 and 2020. Kia's are well made and reliability of these cars are not going to be an issue until 12, 15 years into ownership and even then Kia is up there in reliability. The thing that Hyundai and Kia does that no other brands have done is to IMPROVE at every new generation of their models. The 2019-20 models are significantly better than 2014-17 models. The 21-24 models are significantly better than the previous models. Their warranty puts their money where their mouth is. The current 24 models are top 3, or 4 in reliability and the difference is miniscule.

It sorta does, but obviously doing so leaves some unanswered (or wrongly answered) questions. The thing is, almost all of these reviewers get what they get from the car companies. Consumer Reports is, to my knowledge, the only large scale reviewer that actually goes out and BUYS the vehicles. Very few, if any, car companies put their base models into the press fleets.

After a year, we have never had the sun off the piano black. The media /climate panel is fine. You can run all media from the steering wheel, and you can set climate as it's default.
What about the magical space in the Kia in the cargo area by the wheel well?! No one every talks about that. I love it. I have a backpack, laptop, three jackets, a hoodie, folding chair, umbrella, first aid kit, and the spare tire. Plus there's even these little pockets and things to put stuff into! Fabulous space. All out of sight under the floor. Or, you can move that floor down two or three inches to make more space.

If MPG's are your ONLY concern, then certainly you should buy the RAV4. But all of these rigs will be pretty reliable. And not everyone wants that noisy, cheapo Toyota interior or the CVT. The Kia and the Honda have a physical connection to the rear wheels, which will make them superior in snowy weather or light off roading. That's why their MPG's aren't as good. If I'm driving a car for 10 years or so, I want to enjoy the interior and features as well. The Toyota just doesn't cut it in that regard. Still, to each his own. Lots of good in all these cars.

All these cars have their faults, but after owning several cars to include Toyotas, KIAs, Hondas, Acuras, BMW’s, Tesla, and Saab. I found that Out of all those companies, it is actually Toyota (and Saab) that sweat the details the most. Best car I’ve ever owned was my 2019 Toyota C-HR Limited. Yeah the engine sounded like absolute shit at WOT. Didn’t matter, the car was built like a tank. No paint fading or chips after 3 years, no squeaks or rattles after 3 years, and unmatched dealer service.
If you want a cool design, flashy interior, and inevitable electronic gremlins down the road, 1000% get the KIA. If you want a nice classy design and decent driving manners, get the Honda. If you want an appliance that you can beat on, get the RAV-4.

07:26 It's all well and good saying one car costs $X more to fuel than another car... but fuel prices are variable.
Since they went to the same fuel pump, there's a far better metric: the _percentage_ increase/decrease in fuel cost.
Remember, the higher fuel prices rise, the more $$$ that % will represent to your bank account. E.g. If fuel goes from $1/gal to $10/gal, you're paying +$9/gal. But if fuel goes from $10/gal to $100/gal, you're paying _+$90/gal,_ even though the percentage change is still +900% in *both* cases!
    Over 5k miles:
    *Rav4 - $527.67* (-10.72% vs CR-V; -13.98% vs Sportage)
    *CR-V - $591.04* (+12% vs Rav4; -3.65% vs Sportage)

New transmission at 61k...new engine at 73k. I know the Seltos is a cheaper/lower model, but mechanics are saying this is a Kia-wide problems. The Kia service CSR's at my local dealer are saying - what you see is what it is. And yes, I loved my Kia until the powertrain problems started up.

It's interesting that you use a lower trim model and a year older model for the Toyota. The 2024 has much better multimedia features with wireless carplay and a much bigger screen. The overall global sales figures disagree with your scores. Your fuel costs should have been extrapolated to a full year of driving to give a better cost of ownership. A 7mpg difference is a significant difference over the life of ownership. I would argue that this is a key factor that was overlooked. I would love to see what the five year trade values of these vehicles would be as well.

I don’t like the Toyota because a) they are practically unavailable and b) boring and cheap inside. The Tucson is almost luxurious. Honda can’t even option the panoramic roof which I use all the time, and again boring inside. Totally happy with double the mileage of my last compact SUV. Five year warranty appreciated, but not a single problem so far after 6 months. I couldn’t get a Sportage Hybrid so can’t speak to that. Did Edmunds check spare tires and towing capacity? I know that the CRV hybrids only tow 1000 lbs, and have no spare tire of any kind. Instead they give you a repair kit, which for anything other than a small puncture is useless. Better hope you have cell phone reception if you gash a sidewall and have to call for a tow. And, if it's after hours at the tire shop, you're dead in the water until the shop opens. Toyota has a spare and tows 1750. Have not checked on the Kia. I'd be interested in the CRV if it had more towing and a spare. Toyota gets expensive fast. Hard to find many on the lot that don't have the option packages stacked on, so the XLE Premiums in my region are running in the 42-43K range MSRP. In Consumer Reports, the Kia isn't bad, although slightly below the Toyota and Honda. As noted, the RAV4 is due for a revised model soon.

I don't plan on towing anything big - just occasional short trips with my utility trailer to haul yard debris. My trailer isn't light, so I don't load too heavy for my current ride, which has 1500 lbs towing. The gas only powered CRV will tow 1500 lbs and does have a spare tire. I guess they had to eat the spare tirewell space with hybrid hardware. In general SUV's are morphing towards tall AWD sedans vs the "all weather capable" UTILITY vehicles they started out as. Can't even get fog lights on some of them now. Part of the motivation for buying an SUV vs sedan is the "all-weather capability", and in my book, that ought to include fog lights.

I’m unsurprised that Toyota fans were upset by this result. After all, it’s common knowledge that if you have to do anything but change your oil and rotate your tires before 200K miles, then you might as well throw the whole car away because you bought a piece of junk

I absolutely love my 2024 CR-V EX-L but I will say that the interior is very fragile when it comes to cleaning. I used my softest glass polishing microfiber cloth on the dash and even that scraped it up. I can't tell it is scratched if it's not in full sunlight, but when it is, it is depressing. My high gloss trim on the inside is also scuffed from just my vacuum's dusting brush. I'm a little neurotic, but that is not the same quality as the rest of the vehicle. It's a shame. I still love it and I would still recommend it but goddamn why did they cheap out on the interior surfaces?

Reliability. Fuel economy. Value retention. Least recalls and problems. Those are my priorities. Don't really care too much about all the tech stuff.
    Rav4 forever.

You’re wrong about the Honda engine acting as only a generator for the electric motors.

Yeah 2 year wait for a Rav hybrid in Australia. Thats a deal breaker no matter how good they are.

Thanks for keeping the rav4 in a bad light, only means less competition for us on dealerships. There is a logical reason why its always sold out. 😊

Yeah it’s in semi bad light because it’s not a top performing car. People ignore the fact that just because Toyota is Toyota, not all their models will be perfect, and will be beaten out by alternatives.

I'd personally pick kia/Hyundai. Toyotas are always boring not fun and too safe. Japanese been playing it safe making these vehicles, they don't change anything, they keep everything old and cheap. And obviously reliability isn't the most important factor for me personally. I can't sit in ugly outdated cabin. I'd rather sit in new modern fun cabin with stylish exterior and drive it for 10 years and get something else

Honestly, i love all of them, but this is a little bit biased for toyota regarding interior and technology. You didnt go to xse tech package or limited trim. Regarding the new 10.5 inch infotainment screen and panoramic display. Is just a ugh. So good.😅 in my opinion.

I will never trust Kia or Hyundai. My 2013 Toyota Camry hybrid battery died at 210k miles, and I replaced it and it has been running smoothly ever since. I’ve never had any major issues with any of my Toyotas and my family owns a lot of them. These flash tests ignore reliability which is a huge factor for me and my family.

I had a 2005 Corolla never had an issue, but But the 2003 matrix a/c quit at 75k mile which is 2 years for me, also the radio failed around the same time, traded for a 2005 Sienna XLE with a lot of wind and road noise, the rear hatch rams gave up a year in and of course we put a lot of miles per year so no warranty on either of those, Toyota wanted $140.00 for each ram , NAPA was exactly half , end up taking a chance with advance and paid $70.00 for both and it last the rest of the life of the van ..... On the other hand we have a 2008 Sportage with over 200k and never seen the repair shop. so there you have it for Toyota reliability. Toyotas are good , very good but they have just as many problems as any other brand .
