  • The question of which high performance Jaguar sports car/GT car is a valid one, despite the XK and F-Type bringing quite different advantages and strengths to the table. In particular when many of their used prices and in most cases much of their intended use fall into a similar realm, it begs the question of which approach better suits what you are looking for in a car.
    One being an elegant and physically larger GT car, with 2 plus 2 seating and longer distance driving blended with cruising being its main appeal, and the other being a more compact and muscular pure sports car, with a wildly different selection of engines, a crucial difference in driving style thanks to AWD options, and with perhaps a more youthful vibe to its character.
    So with all of this in mind, which car should you buy, the Jaguar XK, or Jaguar F-Type? Let's head out on the road and find out...

    I am fortunate enough to own several Jaguars, three of which pertain to your current video. First off a 2001 XKR Coupe which I dreamed of owning for many, many years. A very special, near perfect example which I drove sparingly with the idea that maybe within my lifetime it could be worth significant money. I followed the XKR up with a 2011 XK Coupe 5.0NA, very low mileage and unique in our region as it's Caviar over Caramel. Purchased this one for my wife but we put less than 1k miles per year on it, thinking also that it in its condition it will do nothing but appreciate in value. Now both these cars, plus the 2000 XJR in the garage, all bring immense pleasure and joy when they are exercised...but then 4 months ago I purchased a 2017 F-Type Coupe British Design Edition in Ultra Blue with 44k miles on the clock! Being relatively new-ish and not one of low mileage, I felt this one was for exhilarating fun, with little regard for mileage...just drive the wheels off of it!!! It is the quickest of my fleet, sounds the best, and surprisingly gets the best fuel economy! No comparison in the smiles-per-miles department either...it wins hands down! I have to disagree with you on one point though. After taking it on a 2k mile round trip, I must say it is extremely comfortable. Those seats are fantastic. 5 or 6 hours straight and never having to wiggle and writhe to satisfy a sore spot on your bum during that time! I'll admit entering and exiting is more difficult than any of the others, especially if you are so confined that you cannot fully open the door. That niggle alone actually makes me grin. having owned a couple of E-Type many years ago, they were the same way...awkward to get in and out of, but once in, one of the best motoring cockpits to ever experience. I took many trips in my E-Types and I plan to do the same with the F-Type...in my book, it truly is a worthy successor to the E. And as much as I love the XKR and the XK, if I could only choose one, give me the F-Type!!!

    Yes! I bought an '03 XK8 Convertible for my wife for Xmas 2005 -- she still owns it, w/ 82K miles. We had discussed buying an F Type, but we really liked the practicality of the GTs. So, I bought her a 2014 5.0 Jag XK Coupe, for Xmas in 2017. We/she loves it! It is our "go to" GT Cruiser -- all of our long trips south of Michigan are in that car!

    I owned an XK and loved every moment driving it. Unfortunately, it had a minor accident (not my fault) and it was written off by the insurance company. For two years we were “Jag-less”. Recently, we purchased a low mileage F-Type. The latter is more powerful with the XK being very sedate to drive. Love both .

    Having had a 5.0 xkr and now a 3.0 f type I was surprised how different they are, the xkr has all the equipment as standard but the gearbox and the noise are a lot better in the F type however as a taller driver I much prefer the seats in the f type mines a my18 version and the seats are much lower I found the xkr seats to be too high and even with all the adjustments not great so the extra cabin space mostly pointless.

    I am 6 5 ft and the xk is really comfortable for me - the f-type is a pain to fit in. For me the dashboard is simply to low and there is not enough backward travel for the driver’s seats. When it comes to the shape I think there is no doubt that the xk is a better styled car and looks way more expensive than the f-type.

    I was at Simply Jaguar Beaulieu June this year and I did note that the XKR seems to have quite a following. Gorgeous car but I do prefer my F Type coupe. . Convertible F Type doesn’t do it for me , it loses the F Type shape.

      I have noticed the market swinging back towards F-Types as they come down a little and XK's go up, but yeah both excellent cars for different requirements

    Thank you so much for this video. I want a companion for my 6 series Gran Coupe. And I've narrowed my search down to the XKR, the FType, the M6 coupe and M8 coupe.
    I'm looking for a GT car that can absorb hundreds of highway miles in comfort. I test drove a new P450 two weeks ago. It was a great drive, but I felt a bit claustrophobic. So, after this video I think I can safely eliminate the FType. Luckily there's a specialty dealer not too far from me that has a 2014 XKR Convertible and a 2015 XKR coupe in stock. I have to go take a drive.
    Great video

    Age will be a big factor in choosing, under 40 F Type over 50 XK .... between 40 & 50 who is the old bloke trying to impress 😂 I’d add I have an XK but then I’m over 60 🤫

    I would love an F Type but if I had to choose I'd probably go for the XKR but it would be a close call. The problem with the XK is the 6HP gearbox, it's a very lazy gearbox, obviously the paddles will negate that but in my experience of this gearbox if you're in Drive and you want it to kick down, you need to book an appointment.

      Obviously the f type is faster/quicker and has a better gearbox as a dedicated sports car. The XK is a Grand Tourer. But I think you’re exaggerating the XKR’s acceleration limitations/responsiveness. I had my 2010 XKR in dynamic mode/Sport Gear selected/traction in TRAC mode, and I gave it a brief acceleration starting from 10 miles an hour to show my friend and he nearly shit his pants. He told me he’s only felt that in a car once before and that car had nitrous oxide boosters.

      @Jdjfbficjenenwk3736 I had the V6 petrol XF which was normally aspirated. It produced 238bhp and similar torque at 3-4000rpm. As such I had the 6hp25 gearbox. It was lazy. If you wanted dynamic changes you had to use the paddles. Maybe the higher torque versions fitted to the XKs are better. I'd certainly hope so.

      @Jdjfbficjenenwk3736 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@f-u-nkyf-u-ntime yeah the 5.0l supercharged XKR has 0-60 time of about half that in the XF you’re referring to. Like you said, it should. But as long as I put it in dynamic and sport, the torque is nearly instantaneous. I only feel a slight delay/lag if I were to be in normal Drive mode and have dynamic off. Even then it’s only if I floored it that it would take a second to really kick in. I don’t even use the paddles. But again, the f type, especially the R and SVR are definitely going to be faster and more responsive.
