  • This particular Beards 'n Cars Rivals showdown might not seem to be an obvious one on the surface of things, but in reality the question of whether to buy a Jaguar XFR or XKR is a legitimate one, especially if you plan to use your supercharged Jag of choice on a regular or even daily basis. Even from personal experience I was in this exact position of deciding which one I preferred and wanted to buy.
    So with these two similar yet distinctly different high performance (and properly good) Jaguars heading up against each other head to head, let's find out which one is the better choice, in particular depending on what kind of use to intend to put it to...

    I have an XF, but, i would really love an XK.
    In my opinion the XF/XJ/XK/F types - These designs will go down as CLASSICS - the XK and F-Types are both natural design successors to the E-Type and time will treat ALL of these models kindly as their looks mature like fine wine.
    AND OF COURSE THEY'RE JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGS

    Love my XFR, whilst the XKR is undoubtably beautiful, i love the wolf in sheeps clothing of the XFR, people think its a jag grandad carriage, then you obliterate them from the traffic lights or destroying 2 door sports cars on track days, And i do think the XFR wins in the looks department, but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    I bought a 2015 XF Supercharged 5.0 a year ago and I love it. It's a beast in power, handling and braking. It's super comfortable and quiet, it's a total sleeper, it's so luxurious and nice inside and out but it's a fucking monster. For the record, if you cruise on the interstate at 75mph the MPG is high 20's according to the computer. I've seen 28.9mpg average if you drive like a sane person.

    I bought my XFR on the strength of your review of it...I have no regrets. The XKR is stunning to look at. But I prefer the sleeper look of my grey XFR. As Clarkson said "it could even be a diesel". Mine is also handy for taking mother out to look at flooring samples as you have extra seats. But shhh 😂

    I went to the showroom 6 years ago to test drive an XK-R but after driving both over the following week purchased a facelift XFR. It was a truly spectacular car with a much greater range than the 300 miles stated. In fact more like 400 miles.
    Service costs were also very reasonable in comparison to the BMW 6 series I had previously. If you haven’t driven one then I recommend you do. I have changed my car since. If I could buy another I would in a heart beat

    Great comparison here, among my cars I have an early XK8 4.0 and also an early XF but only a 2.7 diesel which is my daily. I love both of them for different reasons, obviously the looks and power of the XK shine through for me but if my XF had a V8 in it I could definitely see it being a fantastic drivers car - although it would then not be practical enough for me as a daily. The standard desiel XFs are really comfortable and nice to handle, along with being one of the better looking saloons on the road. I plan to add a newer XK at some point and upgrade the XF to the 3.0 as a daily.

    I think this is exactly the video a lot of us are hoping for. For me ultimately I think it comes down to the fact that I don't drive much, but when I do drive I want something that looks special. And the XKR and Maserati GranTurismo were really the only ones in the price class, and the XKR you can get a bit cheaper. The one thing I hoped both had a bit better, is the interior. There's a bit of that plastic thing going on, but you can't get it all with the price it is.

I watched your video on the XFR before I bought it and found it the most insightful and informative by far. I agree with everything you have ever said about the XFR and XKR BTW. Congratulations on your purchase! You have a real talent and I love the simple format..just a car guy discussion filmed in a way that makes the viewer a passenger.. Have you ever driven an Ftype R? I just bought a 4.2 XKR.
    I've had a fair few saloons so I do like them, the highlight of which was an e39 M5. However, a gorgeous 2 seater coupé will always have a party piece that no saloon can match- they still feel special at 20mph.
    As good as an XFR is, it is based on a humdrum saloon at the end of the day. If you don't need 4 doors I'd say go XKR.

    I drove the XFR before buying the XKR given an equivalent XFR nowadays is around 10k less. After I drove the XKR I knew it was the one to have; I found it far more exciting and much preferred the sound, noise & looks of the XK. I couldn’t go back to the old man saloon look for me. Another note I paid 25k just shy of 2 years ago and it’s approximate value now is still 23-25k so it definitely done well on the depreciation front.

    Excellent video. I’m afraid I’m late to this comments section as the XFR v XKR vid popped up today on my YT feed. In the main, I fully agree with most of your commentary in the vid but disagree with a couple which I’ll mention below.
    Speaking from my own experience, and after owning 8 BMWs, inc an E61 (V10) M5, I bought my first Jag in 2014, a 59 plate XKR 5.0in grey with ivory leather. I loved that car. The 507 horses gave a smooth power delivery without any nasty behaviours. Apart from its awesome power and decent handling, Jags are as well constructed as any that the Germans have to offer. In 7 years of ownership, not a whiff of deterioration, just some slight oxidation on the tailgate dampers. No significant maintenance issues; some early weeping on the water pump (replaced immediately), a loose underside exhaust protector and a design fault on the air con condenser drain tube, and that’s about it. Running costs; as you’d expect, road tax is over £600pa, but insurance is less than half that. The XKR is a beautiful looking motor; a friend of mine had a DB9 and they are remarkably similar in appearance, though the Jag was c 2/3 the price of the Aston. I chose the ivory interior; two others had black leather, which doesn’t quite match the walnut veneer. The driving position is perfect for 300+ mile trips, air cooled seats and the heated steering wheel are essentials.
    At this point, I’d say that the XKR and its ilk are ludicrous designs interior wise. The so called “seats” behind the front seats would’ve been better utilised as additional storage space; I gave my student daughter a lift once, and it was hilarious watching her get in and out of the rear.
    For mainly practicality reasons, in July this year, I decided to trade in the XKR for a 2015 face-lifted XFR, in Italian Red with Red and Black leather, and black alloys - a stunning looking motor, which I suppose compensates a little for its looks when compared to the XKR. I was smitten when I got behind the wheel for the first time; after 7 yrs in the XKR, all the instruments and controls were where I’d expect to find them, albeit updated (2009 to 2015) for the better. Apart from the driving position, which is equally as comfortable as the XKR, this XFR felt was to be unleashed up the road. It immediately felt quicker than the XKR, which given identical bhp ratings, was undoubtedly due to the 8 speed box (6 on the XKR) - I hadn’t realised the increase in gears until I put it into flappy mode! Performance is, both motors are as quick as most people need in this police state of a road network.
    My first point of disagreement is on the fuel consumption comparison. I never got more than 26.5mpg out of the XKR; on the 140 mile drive home from the dealer, which was a mix of A roads and motorway, I returned 38mpg in the XFR, astonishing for a 5 litre supercharged beast. Six months of ownership doing Covid limited urban mileage gives slightly better consumption than the XKR, in my case 17-20 mpg (cf 16-18).
    Do I regret the change from XKR to XFR? Mostly no, though I do concede the XKR is a better looker. The XFR sadly has no heated steering wheel, which is a brilliant winter aid. Apart from that, and the smaller fuel tank, the improved infotainment and practicality make it worth buying. And by the way, the XFR is better for golfers, as the XKR’s predecessor was better - Jags used to be designed to take a set of sticks laterally across the boot, so you can fit your trolley in. - it’s a tight fir in the XKR, easy in the XFR.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the experiences, and yeah after owning the 4.2 XKR myself the economy was more like 23 mpg average in practice. May still get an XFR at some point, but if I ever do, I'd love to get my hands on the bonkers XFR-S

    I have a Salsa red XFR and am very happy with my decision.Its easier to drive slowly.A lot more practical and every bit as fast as an XKR.The handling is more on the edge and putting its arse out is easier.The XFR is a lot more chuckable too.The higher seating position and shorter bonnet helps too.I think the XK is more of the 'gentlemans' car.They are a beautiful car though.
    Mine is close too 600 bhp and the Powerflow exhaust I had fitted has made the car a different animal.It now sounds better than anything I have heard.Awesome cars both of them but the 'sleeper' nature of the XFR is a bonus too.

    Excellent Excellent video Thanks.
    I own both cars. Admittedly not the "R" version of either. My daily driver is a 3.0 ltr diesel XF and my recently acquired fun car is a 4.2 ltr XK8 convertible. 2015 and 2003 respectively both with similar mileage circa 70k both cars with remarkably low mileage when I bought them. The XK replaced my XJS that I had owned for 25 years and loved but it blew its engine earlier this year and the cost of re build was prohibitive for my budget.
    I will qualify all further comments with the fact that I have only owned the XK for one month whereas I am 3 years plus with the XF.
    Fully agree with the comments in the vid about the similarity between the 2 cars.
    Both are comfortable, both are fast. Both are proper cats. Nice and docile until you step on their tail then they both turn into snarling monsters. Obviously the XK has that glorious V8 sound but you have to make it make that noise if you see what I mean whereas the XF has a great growl all of its own that manifests itself more often.
    The way I would describe the looks is that the XK is pretty ( and boy is it pretty) whereas the XF is Handsome ( I have the sportsbrake which IMHO is even better looking than the saloon).
    Practicality I'm afraid the XF has it in spades. Usable rear seats , huge estate, and for a pretty quick car if you drive it sensibly huge fuel economy. 50Mpg is easily attainable as opposed to 28 for the XK and boy is it comfortable. The ride quality puts its German rivals to shame let alone the silky smooth V6. The ride quality on the XK may be a bit compromised by being a convertible.
    Speed, well I think the XF has again got the XK. I am sure that if you put them both on a track the XK would win but on a normal road the XF has got it. With the 8 speed auto in the XF the useable acceleration is better. I feel you have to chase the XK a bit more to make it go, but when it does WOW. These comments may be modified the longer I own the XK.
    Grin Factor. When I was buying the XF I needed and estate car and I did test drive a 2.2 diesel. Yes lovely car but even my wife commented that it was not quick enough for me. When I test drove my current car it sure put a grin on my face. When I am driving the XK its not a grin but a beaming smile. It feels like it wants to corner, it feels faster than it really is and it is the first convertible I have ever owned.
    So basically I really love both cars and look forward to many more years of fun in both.
    I do miss my XJS I do miss just going out for a waft but then you had to stand on its tail just to show that it was a very capable GT and the sound of that big lazy V12 at 5k rpm+ was just magnificent.
    The XK is great for a waft and is exactly the same when you stand on its tail that raucous roar of the V8 at 6k rpm is something different.
    Thanks again for the video. I hope my comments are helpful for anyone that cant quite afford the "R" versions but love the XK XF marque.

      Sort of an apples to oranges comparison though, as the driving, performance, sound, etc are all very different between an XK8 like yours and the X150 models, especially the later ones. Whereas in this video, he's comparing two on the same platform with the same engine, similar interiors, etc which makes a direct comparison.

    First off, thanks for a series of great videos. I owned a 4.2 XK some years ago, and like a complete idiot sold it when the market dropped like a rock. Biggest mistake I have ever made with a car. I am looking at buying another example and appreciate your opinion on the attributes between the 4.2 XKR and the 5.0 litre version. I would really appreciate knowing what your considerations were when you bought yours. How did you source it and would you have done anything different having bought the car and having personal experience of owning the it.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I enjoyed mine, chose the 4.2 purely for the little details which I prefer, such as the driving lights in the bumper, J-gate shifter, bassier engine etc. Moved on because I like to change to new cars pretty regularly anyway, but also due to the near total lack of rear seat usability. I bought it privately from a guy looking to make a whim change as I was and it just worked out well in my case for the most part. Needed some work doing when the rear brake lines corroded through and put the car out of commission, but nothing else major went wrong in the 8 months I had it

    Also stay in the UK. I'm looking at xkr or xfr.. I'm worries about rwd in the wet though, especially in the xkr. Have you found any in particular is more planted in the wet? All that power to the rear wheels is alot. I've dealt with 400 odd to the wheels but that 500 just scares me a little. Is it that bad to drive in the wet?

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven’t spent considerable time in the wet with the 500 bhp models tbh, but my 420 bhp R copes fine. I wouldn’t go flooring it or anything obviously, but as long as driven sensibly it’s good enough

  • @johnshaw8013
    @johnshaw8013 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    XK more economical because of less frontal area, less weight, and less rolling resistance.
    XF probably needed to have a smaller tank to fit rear seats and a big in.
    Just physics!
    And sound varies depending on the size of the speaker enclosure! And the amount of deadening and ecu tweakery!

    I love both. Previously had a 2005 final edition XK8-S and have used a friend's 2008 XKR convertible a fair bit. A couple of years ago, I drove a XF S (with the 3.0 diesel engine) and loved it! The S styling really worked and it was a fantastic ride. I've not driven a XFR, but will do, as it really appeals. Why the hell didn't they fit it with a hatchback boot though??? I just don't get it. If it had a hatchback, you could sling the seats down and throw a mountain bike in there etc! I love the 'muscle car' factor and the 'sleeper' factor of the XFR too. The one to go for.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is kinda ironic that the XK has a hatch and the XF doesn't

    • @tubeviewer-qp1fb
      @tubeviewer-qp1fb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HSGAutomotive Yeah. The hatchback on the XK is welcome and makes sense without any styling cost. The XF actually LOOKS like a hatchback, but isn't. What were they thinking! By the way, I liked your XJ 3.5 V8 video (red interior) so much, I searched for the car on the dealer's website and was about to buy it over the phone (on the strength of your video and previously owning a couple of XJs, but that one was Cat D I think.....hence the low price.

      @HSGAutomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tubeviewer-qp1fb Ah, still, you should be able to find another without too much trouble since those tend to be in the 5k region fairly regularly. Even for high mileage XJR’s in fact on occasion 👍

    • @tubeviewer-qp1fb
      @tubeviewer-qp1fb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HSGAutomotive The challenge with the XJ is matching up all of the following: (i) interior (seat) colour (lots of boring light grey out there), (ii) dashboard and door cards (prefer the aluminium look, but a couple of the darker woods are 'ok' (like that one), but some of the wood finish is just awful. (iii) mileage (iv) body colour (green, grey preferred), (v) wheel option (vi) Sport / R trim (dechromed around windows etc). The final edition 2007-2009 X358 facelifted XJ is a sexier looking car, but then you have the £530 (?) road tax instead of £320 (?) - as well as the same trim / colour challenges. When I sometimes find a XJR X358 which ticks all those boxes, it's close on £20k.......different ball game.

    I've got the XFR and considering a change to an XKR but not sure whether it's different enough to be worth it, the XKR is quite a lot more expensive for the same age

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah generally speaking you'll be paying more for the 5.0 XK. I'd consider swapping my XKR for an XFR in future actually, in the right spec at least, a black, pre facelift model XFR.

    XKR for sure. The looks are so much better. If I were going for the sedans, I'd be looking at the XJR or XJR-L, as the styling is so distinct and aggressive. The XFR just looks so boring. :-\
