  • The Asmat people live on the southwestern coast of western Papua. A land that remained unknown for a long time, free from outsiders, discouraged by the Asmats' terrifying reputation as cannibals and headhunters!
We went to film them, simply to be the witnesses of their untouched culture, in one of the last unexplored regions of the globe, and to better understand their way of life in this singular territory.
    Extract from the documentary: “Asmat”
    Direction: Jean-Michel Corillion
    Production: ZED, Odyssée & RAI
SLICE wants to fill up your curiosity!

I spent 2 months with the Asmat in 1994, just before the Indonesian government opened it up to foreigners. I'm sure the culture and environment has changed a lot since then.

20 year old, but very nice short documentary about Papua. I was lucky to get see the birds of paradise, cassawaries, and komodo om Bali as I really could go further East to Komodo annd onto Papua just on my own. For that you adventure, you'll need specialized guides and guards that gets expensive though the protection services are necessary particully if starting out in the dangerous high crime city of Port Moresby. I guess what's probably changed the past 20 years on Papua is the sold a lot of forest for the Chinese to cut down exported to the West as lumber for things like American wooden buildings.
