- In the small remote South Pacific island of Pentecost in the Vanuatu archipelago, men prove their courage by jumping into space, their survival depending solely on the vines tied to their ankles. For the children of Bunlap village, this first land diving or Nagol is a major step on the road to becoming a man.
Wabac, Sali and Telkon, our three Bunlap kids dream of doing the “head jump”: the jump from the highest point of the tower. Along with their friends, they will participate in the construction of the tower, they too want to jump. An impressive ritual on the road to become a man.

I think they should've mentioned that in the title. See how easy it is to perpetuate misinformation. I'm from Samoa not very far away. I saw a Documentary in the Mid 90's about this right of passage. Then all of a sudden someone magically invented Bungee Jumping lol. Just like Captain Cook "Discovered" Tahiti 🤣😂. A place that was already inhabited for about 15k years.

The bravery of the boys & men diving from platforms of various heights is simply breathtaking. The exhilaration of achievement is palpable.
This is insane culture.

This is absolute madness but nevertheless fascinating to watch. These folks who wear minimal clothing and who likely only developed primitive technology before contact nevertheless dreamed this thing up long ago and developed the engineering skills to not only build the towers but to also ensure that most of the divers survive their jumps largely uninjured. Incredible ingenuity and foolhardy bravery all wrapped up into one event.
