I have the Hahnemuhle 100% cotton watercolor sketchbook and the paper is 250 gsm (120 lb). I’m looking to upgrade to the Kilimanjaro sketchbook when my sketchbooks are complete.
for those in the asia area, baohong makes wooonderful 100% cotton sketchbooks/paper for very affordable prices!!!! theyre my go-to and absolute joys to use, coming in a variety of sizes and textures. they have a student and artist grade line and it's SO rare to find a student line that's also 100%cotton.
@@marigasudaisuki another vote for Baohong, their sketchbooks must be good. Will have to add them to my list of future art supplies to check out. Thanks for posting!
@@marigasudaisuki I recently discovered that and love it. It’s my go to paper now. Kilimanjaro 300 pound sketchbook is still my favorite for that, but Baohong blocks are available on Amazon in the USA.
I found the Kilimanjaro after a long research. It is the best deal out there for 100% cotton. It is made in USA by cheap joes company. And the thing that many people don't know is that not all 100% watercolor paper behaves the same. Cheap joes also have a mix pack of watercolor paper for you to try. I buy them and make my own sketchbooks, but the Kilimanjaro is always the winner. The also have a Black Travel Watercolor with 25 sheets. I like supporting small companies like this instead of big companies like canton that produce really subpar products. You can get away with cheap paint and brushes but the not with paper. It took a while for me to realize that buying cheap paper and not getting any results. I hope this helps someone that is learning just like me. Thanks for putting this out there!
Hi M B. Thank you for your excellent comments. I agree with you, Kilimanjaro is the winner. I use it in my own DIY sketchbooks and love painting on it. Cheers! :)
Wait it has sketching papers And watercolor papers! I'm sold 😩👏🏼 Also the "I loathe you" spoke to me spiritually 😂😂 I still don't have a favorite sketchbook because I like to try different brands everytime I need a new one, but so far Etchr has been great because I also use it for gouache and acrylic ink and wow does this sketchbook take a lot of washes!
Yep, both sketch paper and watercolor paper. What a great idea, right? I was sold on it as soon as I opened it. Give it a try one of these days and let me know how you like it. Thanks for posting! :)
I love Kilimanjaro sketchbooks! I have 9 filled so far of varying sizes and a 9 x 12 spiral bound waiting to be filled. I have one handmade sketchbook that my daughter made for me. I gave her a sheet of Saunders Waterford paper and an old painting I had put in my death pile. She made the cover out of the old painting so that sketchbook is my sentimental journey.
That is awesome! I've heard good things about Saunders Waterford paper, it is top notch and preferred by many professional and amateur artists. How nice of your daughter to make that sketchbook for you, using the paper you love! Can't go wrong with that. Thank you for sharing!
I’m on my 4th Kilimanjaro sketchbook, they are indeed really nice. Kilimanjaro is Cheap Joe’s house brand, so no other vendor has them. It’s good stuff.
4th one? That is great! It really is a good sketchbook. Do you like the bright white paper or the natural white? And how are you using the sketch paper?
@@morrisonwatercolors i use the sketch paper pretty much as you do, making notes on colors and mixes. I’m not great at sketching so i usually do my sketches digitally in Procreate because I can erase an infinite number of times or trace from a photo. I wish the sketch paper had a little more tooth, Id like to do some colored pencil stuff on it. I had the natural white for my first three, I’ve just started a bright white, and the colors really pop on it. You do know they have a 300 lb version too? I might go for that to practice some really wet washes, but most of my work is florals and the 140 lb is fine
@@starr-starr I definitely have my eye on the 300 lb version but the size I want is out of stock. Like you, I think the 140 lb paper works just fine for most of my paintings. Thanks so much for watching and posting. :)
@@morrisonwatercolors Right next to where it says Out of stock, there's a link that says Notify Me When In. I use it all the time and it will let you be one of the first to see that it's back. Cheap Joe's is the best! 🎨
Just happened across your video, and I am so happy I did! The Grinch was the laugh I needed today! Thank you for the recommendation and the reviews of the other books, as well.
I was not expecting the Grinch clips when I clicked on this video but thank you for the laughs! Unfortunately, I'm nowhere close to a Cheap Joes. I'm curious on binding my own tho!
Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. I buy from Cheap Joe's online, but they only sell in the USA. If you are outside of the USA, definitely try making your own sketchbook. There is a video on my channel showing how to do it. Take care! :)
I’ve never tried Kilimanjaro paper, but I make my own sketchbooks. I have a hole punch for the smooth plastic spiral binding, and I use Fabriano and Arches paper that I buy in the large sheets and cut to the size I want.
What a nice and clear presentation. I'm so glad I came across your video because I was thinking of buying a Kilimanjaro watercolor book, but hesitated. I'm lucky enough to have a Cheap Joe's in town, so I'll need to go again soon to buy one. I also liked your first page color wheel and the music was an extra bonus!
You are so kind! Thank you for the nice remarks. You are very lucky to have a local Cheap Joes nearby. Hopefully they have the Kilimanjaro sketchbooks in stock. If you get one, let me know how you like it. Thanks and take care! :)
Thank you for another informative and entertaining video! No wonder no one is talking about it lol, because you can't find it anywhere. :) I am intrigued, will make sure to purchase one when I visit the US or ask my sister to get me one. Have a great weekend! 🌼
Hi Miss Brontë! Good to hear from you. I hope you get the chance to use this sketchbook, I think it would suit your art very well. If you have a chance to get your hands on it, don’t pass it up. Thanks for posting and take care! :)
Oh. My. I knew that I had seen a watercolor sketchbook with regular paper in between the watercolor sheets! I've googled every way which I could think of to no avail. THANK YOU!
@@MirandaWatsonArt One of the Etchr books is made with Baohong paper, can't remember which one. Amazon sells their blocks pretty cheaply. I love the rough for landscapes.
I just purchased this sketchbook along with the 10x5" and a 5 pack of 22x30" sheets. I tried a small piece of the full sheet last night and I'm very happy with it. I got mine on sale. I'm happy to see your review. I may stick with this paper for all future purchases.
I'm new to watercolours; by watching many video like yours though, I've come to the conclusion that Archer, Fabriano and Kilimanjaro are the best! thank you for the video and ciao ciao :)
Thank you for this video. Your presentation it’s very well done. Your voice does not become abrasive or monotonous and your information is presented in a manner in which a beginning artist can understand.
Painting something nice on the 1st page. That's a great idea! Thanks. I'm going to start doing that. I can see how it can be motivating to sit down, open your sketchbook and see a great piece of art you made. Just might be what I need to overcome my irrational fear of blank pieces of paper when I start a new book.
You are so welcome! Thank you for the nice comments. The fear of the blank page is real for sure. Good luck with your sketchbook painting and take care! :)
What a coincidence I’m always on the lookout for new watercolor sketchbooks (and blocks). Your video just popped up and it was interesting and informative. I’ve had my eyes on the Kilimanjaro sketchbooks for a while now due to them being 100% cotton and the spiral binding. I want my sketchbooks to lay flat. When I’m close to finishing my existing sketchbooks hopefully I’ll buy a Kilimanjaro sketchbook (or two). Looking forward to your next video. Thank you!
The Kilimanjaro sketchbook lays nice and flat, and may be just what you need. I love the fact that it has 100% cotton, that is hard to find in an affordable sketchbook. If you give this one a try, let us know how you like it!
I couldn't help notice your nicely manicured hands. As a newby just starting to learn watercolor, thank you for this video. I think I will learn a lot from you. 🎨🖌️ ❤️
I ran into your channel very recently. I used to take classes in college a "few" years ago, more like 58. Teachers thought I had lots of potential, family not so much. (Dad wanted lawyer.) I still have all kinds of supplies and equipment (great stuff, still usable). I finally decided to start over, which is why I was watching this video. Great info, but what impressed me the most was your actual studio area set up, which you show in passing. Could you post a video about it? I have a separate building in my property (former horseless carriage, even older than me), which I removated and would like to do something similar. I'm sure others would also benefit from seeing it in more detail, even if it's just part of some other video related to your art. It looks like a large kitchen counter, but I'm sure you also have an area for supplies. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words Carmen. Glad to hear you have rediscovered art, I hope you have a fun time with it starting over again. I will definitely consider posting a video on my studio area set up. I have modified it just slightly since posting this video, with better lighting. The arm bar clamp is portable so I can detach it and move it upstairs to my work station. I keep my art supplies in my basement. I like painting on the kitchen counter because I can move the chairs and stand and paint, or sit and paint. Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel! I saw your other comment and got a kick out of it. Take care! :)
It was a surprise for me to find out that Kilimanjaro makes Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper. Yep. I ordered specifically Fabriano Artistico paper to make my own watercolor books and some of the paper inside the 5 sheet sleeve was watermarked Kilimanjaro. I bought it from a popular art supply company and had to mention it on Cheap Joe’s. It was true. There are only so many companies left that manufacture great quality paper. I made mixed hp and cp books that lay flat as well as my very large 16 x 10 Arches sketchbook. I just got tired of garbage so called watercolor sketchbooks. But indeed I could not hold back that little secret about Fabriano Artistico and Kilimanjaro. Happy painting!😊
Hi Jennie. That is exactly how I discovered Kilimanjaro paper, by ordering the Fabriano 5-sheet pack (from Blick Art) and finding the paper embossed with the Kilimanjaro watermark. At first I thought they sent me the wrong paper! But when I tried painting on it ... I loved it! Thanks for posting! :)
Actually, I think it's the other way around. Cheap Joe's uses Fabriano Artistico for it's housebrand Kilimanjaro sketchbooks. At least that's what an expert in the watercolor paper world told me.
@@morrisonwatercolors I think it is hilarious. I had ordered from Blick’s but had been familiar with Kilimanjaro paper many, many, many years ago so I was shocked to see the watermark. That happened about 6 years ago and I let everyone know on Cheap Joe’s reviews that Fabriano Artistico makes it. It is sad to see the number of paper mills either decreasing or switching parts like Arches and Cansón. I still use the newer Hahnemule books and they do fine as long as I’m not layering continually. I really enjoy making my own, binding them each uniquely and they make great gifts. On TH-cam DAS has an awesome channel on how to do every variety of stitching and all the trouble shooting. He is an amazing teacher as well as professional binder.
Looking forward to trying it. I only have one water, color sketchbook, and to be honest I don’t even remember what kind it is. The paper does not hold the wash and the paper buckles very easily even when just swatching paint. I’m happy to have found your review.
I found this video just at the right time as I just finished my moleskine sketchbook. I was thinking about getting an etch sketchbook as I was not very impressed with the moleskine paper quality but I like the size. I will definitely make some of my own sketchbooks, this really inspired me.
Hi Irene! Yes, I would definitely suggest you try making one of your own sketchbooks. I have a video on my channel demonstrating how I make my own. But there are lots of other videos on TH-cam also showing how it is done. Good luck!
Yes!! Heartily agree with your assessment of all of these sketchbooks. I just found the Kilamanjaro sketchbook and papers last year and fell head over heels for them! The sketchbook is heavenly. Just delightful with the wonderful Kilamanjaro 140lb watercolor paper, plus the sketching paper and heavy cover paper. I was concerned about the spiral binding, but as it turns out it works really well for this sketchbook. Anyway, great review, and you have a new subscriber 😊. Thank you!
Wonderful comments! I like how you describe this sketchbook as “heavenly”, I agree! It is the best I have found so far. Thank you for subscribing and take care! :)
So glad i came across this video today! I live about 30 minutes from one of Cheap Joe's 2 brick and morter stores. The one im nearest to is actually attached to their warehouse from which they conduct all of their online business, and its their "outlet" store. Its my favorite place to go and stock up on watercolor supplies! Im like many who continue using Arches paper because almost everything else i try has something about it i dont like. The only one ive actually liked as much as Arches is Saunders. Well, on my last trip to Cheap Joes Outlet a few weeks ago, i purchased my first Killamamjaro paper ever, and it happens to be this exact sketchbook! I havnt used it yet but now im overwhelmed with excitement to open it and get going! Btw...your colorwheel painting is awesome! What a beautiful and inspirational cover!
Hope you like your Kilimanjaro sketchbook! Thank you for taking the time to post a comment, and for the kind words about the color wheel painting. Have a great day!
@@sherrywoods4630 I definitely recommend making one of your own. I do have a video on my channel showing how I make my DIY sketchbooks. Feel free to check it out and good luck! :)
I felt the loathing of Canson XL deep lol. I used two a5 sizes and swore never again. Though the Grumbacher paper you can sometimes find in Walmart is actually even worse if you can believe it.
Thank you for your review! This is my first time seeing your videos. I am a relative newbie to watercolor. My experience is in drawing, mainly, and acrylics for painting. I do like watercolor a lot though and plsn to spend more time with it!!
Hi Perris, welcome to the channel! I hope you enjoy your watercolor journey, it is a very difficult medium to master but is also very fun to play with. Watercolor is my happy place. Take care and thank you for posting a comment! :)
I've loved these sketchbooks for years! Kilimanjaro paper is my favorite and it's great to have the same thing in a sketchbook that I use on blocks. The pricing is reasonable for the quality. I think the spiral design and limited availability (only at Cheap Joe's) is what stops them from being a more popular choice.
You just made me spend 80 dollars. Cheap Joes thanks you! Lol. Yes, I had the watercolor sketchbook issue and I’m glad to know I’m not the only one not drooling over Etchr. I’m of the opinion that cold press should actually be cold pressed which I find is not the case with most watercolor sketchbooks. By the way Stillman and Bern doesn’t thank you as I cancelled that order the moment you got done with commenting on it. Thank you so much for being honest and not just going with the crowd. Really, how many people or artists actually like every thing?
If only I was an affiliate of Cheap Joes, I would be scoring some nice commissions! But alas, that is okay. I hope you like the sketchbooks. Cheap Joes has an awesome 100% guarantee and nice return policy, so if your purchases don't work for you, be sure to make use of their return policy. Cheers! :)
I have been using Arches 140 pound cold press, watercolor paper for over 25 years. Someone told me about Kilimanjaro’s 140 pound watercolor paper, stating that it was as close to Arches as they have ever found. They were right! I have been using Kilimanjaro 140 pound cold press, watercolor, paper along with Arches now, for about 10 years. And like yourself, I have made my own sketchbooks from arches paper, 140 pound watercolor for over 10 years. I have also used their 300 pound Kilimanjaro, watercolor, paper, coldpressed also, and love it! I have not tried Kilimanjaro sketchbook yet, but after watching your video, I am going to try it. I trust Cheap Joe, the owner of Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff and have liked all of their in-house products. Love Joe’s own brushes also. Mary at Hart Lane Studio in California
I love Kilomanjaro 300 lb paper in the sheet form. I never stretch it and I use both sides if I have a failed painting. It is my second choice after Arches and much less expensive. If you love hot press you must try Baohong Satinado in Block Form. It is surprisingly wonderful to paint on. It's my new favorite for florals. Thank you for a great video. I so agree with you.
i have heard great things about etchr ! i was considering getting one because i am practicing watercolor, but this video is all the more reason. nice upload !
I love my Etchr sketchbooks, but not for swatching or testing paints on. They r very expensive for sure. I'm going to try and order these if they ever r in stock.
I use Kilimanjaro w/c paper all the time. Absolutely love it, both 140 lb. and the 300 lb. for a treat. Will be looking for the sketchbook now! Thanks for the review.
Hi Betsy! Kilimanjaro is great watercolor paper. I agree, both the 140 lb and 300 lb paper is fantastic to paint on. After trying out the 300 lb paper, I have fallen in love with it and I think it is my absolute favorite. Thank you for posting and happy painting! :)
Looking forward to finding and trying this paper/sketchbook out. I’ve tried most of the sketchbooks you reviewed and I agree wholeheartedly with your experiences. The canson one made me angry xD😂

I've just returned to watercolor after two years. I went to commercial art school forty years ago and worked as an advertising artist, but never did watercolors. I find it relaxing and it gives me joy to present a finished piece to friends. I'm glad I saw this video. While I don't do sketchbooks. I have the two Canson ones you mentioned and I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion on them. I will be purchasing the Kilimanjaro sketchbook you mention, because I can do quick tiny paintings in them to give to people while enjoying the process because the paper is so good. Thank you for a great video.
Hi Rebecca. Thank you for taking a moment to post a comment. I am happy to hear you have picked up watercolors again. If you get the Kilimanjaro sketchbook, let me know how you like it. :)
Yes! Went through so many different brands until I found Kilamanjaro! Love their sketchbooks and blocks too. Hard to find such nice paper for the price.
Hi Thomas! Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. I am glad you also enjoy painting in these sketchbooks. They are just great sketchbooks. I will need to try their blocks some time. I have some single sheets and like painting on them, so their blocks will probably be even better. Take care!
The worst experience for me is to love a paper that I can’t get. 😂 Checked the site and every Kilimanjaro is either back ordered or out of stock. Every. Single. One. Grr!
I’ve never tried the Kilimanjaro sketchbook but now I want to try it. I have made my own sketchbook out of Arches paper. That was a lot of trouble though and I have since decided that I really like Arteza brand mixed media pad for my watercolor sketching.
Hi Katdancing! The hand-made sketchbook you made out of Arches paper sounds fun to paint it. It can take some effort to assemble. I am glad that the Arteza pad is working for you. Thank you for posting! :)
THIS is my EXACT problem for months! I couldn't find a sketcbook with proper weight watercolor pages and each one someone recommended just couldn't handle my beginner's abuse and scrubbing and learning water control. I can't wait to get this now!
Thank you for sharing about your experiences with sketchbooks. I’m considering buying a watercolor sketchbook to encourage myself to paint more. I am also interested in your palette. Can you tell me where to get one like that?
Hi Janet. Thank you for stopping by the channel. The palette depicted in this video is a Heung Il palette that I bought on Amazon. Here's the link (affiliate link): amzn.to/3oBI7wo. Mine has 30 wells, so it can fit a lot of colors. I am using it right now as my studio palette. Sometimes buying new supplies can help get the creative juices flowing and inspire you to paint. Good luck!

I simply love your work Morrison! You have an incredible sense of colour and your sketches are very graceful. Ciao! And thanks a lot for sharing this.
Thanks Elisabetta! Sorry this sketchbook isn't available in Italy. I wish it was more readily available so more artists could share the love of it. Anyway, your words are very kind. Did you notice the "Ciao Caio!" at the end of this video? It was for you. Cheers! :)

I have been making my own sketchbooks with Saunders Waterford paper. I also buy pads of arches and Saunders Waterford and take them to my local office shop and have then spiral bound. I have tried many commercial made ones and am not satisfied with any of them. The etcher ones are out of my price range.
DIY sketchbooks are the best! That is a great idea to take the paper to a local office shop for binding. I agree that most commercial sketchbooks just don't cut it. And Etchr is very expensive. Thanks for posting!
I just happened to land on your channel and I love your style. This video was super interesting, sadly it looks like the Kilimanjaro isn't available in Europe.
Hello Morrison, that was a very nice tour through your sketchbooks. I have not bought one or fallen one I am a beginner and also want to find my favorite paper. I very much think that I have to find my favorite paper on my own.many greetings from Christiane Berlin Germany I have subscribed your channel. 😊😊
Thank you for watching. I show how I painted the color wheel in the video but may be willing to do a tutorial for it if enough people are interested. Cheers!
I started out with some sample postcards they threw in with my purchase many years ago. I then bought some 300lb paper and I have the panoramic 5.5 inch one. It is excellent. I’m not normally a fan of wire binding but I admit there are advantages when using it for plein air. But I like the look and feel of a hard cover book. I wish they’d make a hard cover option. I thought kilamanjaro was exclusively Cheap Joe’s brand.
Hi Sharon! Great comments! I think you are right about Kilimanjaro being exclusive to Cheap Joes. By the way, did you know Cheap Joe's has a black travel sketchbook? It is still spiral bound, but has a "hard back" cover. Here's a link to the page on their website: www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/35825/s/kilimanjaro-black-travel-watercolor-journals/
😆The Grinch I don’t have a favorite sketchbook because I like them all!! It just depends on my mood and my purpose. Like if I’m in the mood for pen only sketching, I’ll use a cheap blank 100gsm book. For daily art journaling, I’m happy with U.S. Art Supply 230 gsm watercolor book. I love Art Creation 140 gsm mini books for when I’m out and about. I have a ton of different papers and books! I’ve also stocked up on Arches - I buy them when they’re on sale on Amazon and I plan on binding them so I can get the size that I like (I paint small). My real problem is that I don’t paint fast enough to use up all my papers and paints!!
I'm a newbie, trying to learn from online tutorials, & I'm seeing that the paints are just not reacting the same on paper for me like they are in the tutorials. Lo & behold, what paper am I using? That Canson XL. 😆 I figured I'd start out with cheaper paper until I'd studied & practiced some, but I've come to the point where it's more frustrating than anything, so I'm ready to move on, & will try the Kilamanjaro! One of the pros I watched said that she did the same as a newbie, but when she switched to the best paper, everything changed for her!
Hi Blu Skyz! I really am sympathetic to the plight of newbies. Everyone starts out not wanting to spend good money on expensive paper only to waste it on practice pieces, so they practice on inferior paper and get bad results and then often give up not realizing that the paper is holding them back. Your post brings back some vivid memories for me, and is a common experience. I hope you stick with it and enjoy the journey. Thanks for posting and sharing!
One more thought: some good practice paper to learn on is the ready cut strathmore paper, 5x7 inches, or ready cut Bee Paper, 6x9. Both are 100 percent cotton paper. And you can buy them in bulk at a good price.
Kilimanjaro’s not bad! Since arches came out with their cold press travel journal, that’s the ready-made sketchbook for me. I’ve made a few of my own sketchbooks as well-always the best❤ it’s so great to find your favorite already made!! Nice video! glad I found you.
I need to check out the Arches sketchbook, some others have suggested it and of course you can't go wrong with Arches paper. I agree that making your own sketchbooks is the best. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel! :)
I am currently using the Etchr Perfect Sketchbook Signature Series with Fabriano Artistico 100% cold press watercolor paper. B5 portrait. I love it and for those of us in Europe who cannot get our hands on the Kilimanjaro, I think it is the perfect alternative without having tried the Kilimanjaro, but based on your description.
Since this video was made, Hanhemule has released a 100%cotton watercolor sketchbook. I’m interested in your thoughts on it. I DO like Cheap Joe’s paper. I also like Bee Creative 100% cotton book. It’s even harder to find.
Thanks for watching and for posting a comment. I haven’t tried the 100% cotton Hahnemuhle sketchbook yet but I have heard good things about it. The Kilimanjaro sketchbook is working great for me, so I am sticking with it (I am now using the 300 pound/640 GSM version of the sketchbook, which I love).
My last Kiliminjaro sketchbook had its siral being fall apart. Cheap Joes replaced it, but all my hard work in the sketchbook was no longer bound. That's been years ago so I'll give them another try.
I have tried for years to find out who makes the Kilimanjaro paper and to verify that it is 100% cotton as you state. Cheap Joe's doesn't share much. I have used some of this paper separately but have not spent the time using it as you have. I have now some Bockingford spiral bound books I bought from Jerry's Artorama; made by Saunders Waterford. I like the paper and use it for finished paintings as many British watercolorists do. If you know what the Kilimanjaro paper is made from and who makes it, I'd appreciate knowing as I think others would as well. Thanks.
Hi Mike. Here is some information from the product page for this sketchbook on Cheap Joe's website: "Kilimanjaro Original Bright White Watercolor Paper is made of super white 100% cotton rag sized internally and externally with plant-based, synthetic sizing. It is archival, acid-free, and chlorine-free, and is tough enough to handle lifting, scraping, and scrubbing. Created for both quality and value, it meets the demands of the most discerning professional artists." And one more quote: "Manufactured at Cheap Joes Art Stuff, Boone NC with components made in Italy and the US." Hope this helps answer some of your questions. Thanks for stopping by and for posting a comment. Take care! :)
Awesome! I will get one. The only thing I’m wondering about is the tooth of the paper. I like a tooth so that my granulating colors can sink down in and give me the effects I desire. I love how it has a sheet in between for notes. I think I would prefer the bright white also. But if needed I could also use the alternative. Thanks for a great video. I watched Jess Karp on TH-cam tonight and she has a new video out. She is starting a new sketchbook and she paints the double spread page at the beginning of her book. You should check it out! It’s very nice.
I like the tooth of this one. It is cold press and has a nice texture to it. Especially the 300 pound sheet but also the 140 lb paper as well. I like it. Also, I love Jess Karp and you won’t believe it but I actually watched her video and then saw your post, what a coincidence huh? Jess is using the Strathmore mixed media journal and she is very talented. Plus her videos are extremely well made, something to aspire to. 👍👍👍

Love this review! I agree, agree with your assessment of the watercolor books. I do love the Etchr sketchbook...but the price keeps me from painting in them. I'm excited about your review of the Kilimanjaro sketchbook. Have you tried Indigo Art Journal? I do love them...but you do need to prep the papers with a spritz of water and allow it to soak in for the best results. I love the deckled edges of that paper. I believe it's made in India...not sure.
I love the look of deckled edge paper, especially in sketchbooks. I haven't tried the Indigo Art Journal (yet), but I actually think I saw a video about it awhile ago and was meaning to check it out. Thank you so much for taking the time to post a comment, I appreciate the kind remarks. Take care! :)
Excellent video! I’ve been making my own sketchbooks for years, but this one is so very tempting to try! I’m wondering how you cover your homemade sketchbooks and bind together the signatures. Thanks for the excellent video. I look forward to following you and learning more!
Hi Gayle! Welcome to the channel and thank you for posting. There is a video on my channel explaining how I make my homemade sketchbooks. I don’t put a cover on them, I like them bare, with just regular watercolor paper. Nothing to fancy, but they work for me. Cheers and happy painting! :)
I'm about to make my first sketchbook. I think for the cover I'm going to use an undesirable Wc paper and gesso it and paint it with acrylic. I think this will give it some sturdiness and protection and just look nice. 😊
Looks like a decent sketchbook. I like the format. My latest favorite is Strathmore watercolor 500 series it takes time to get used to but ones you learn how to work with this paper is pure joy to me. I tried a lot of sketchbooks throughout the years honestly I like them all for different projects. This year I decided to take a break from sketchbooks and bought Arches hot and cold press paper. Quickly realized I don't have time messing with cotton paper, it takes much longer to dry and fuss around. So now I am thinking about getting Daler Rowney Simply sketchbook, is so lovely for watercolors. You can't really display or sell your work, but I enjoy painting on this paper so much, better than those fancy cotton papers are.
I am just getting into watercolors from acrylics. Plain watercolor paper works pretty well for my acrylic painting as I don’t go too wet with it but water colors require cotton paper I am finding. Thanks so much for this video! I will def pick up a Kilimanjaro journal when I get chance so I can try it out. I find etcher and Arches just too pricey for my taste when it comes to 100% cotton. Good info on paper!
I wish it was available in the UK. But Fabriano Artistico paper is very similar, so maybe a sketchbook with that type of paper might be available to you? Or maybe you can make your own sketchbook? Thanks for stopping by and posting a comment! :)
It's the name of the orientation, friend. If the longer side is horizontal it's called landscape, if the longer side is vertical, it's called portrait. It's not telling you what to paint on it. You can paint at whatever angle on any paper.
I’ve tried a lot of different sketchbooks and the only ones that haven’t disappointed me has been the Etchr Perfect Sketchbook (the dark grey cover one with 140lb paper). The one in your video with the white cover is the Everyday sketchbook with only 90lb paper. For that I’ve only tried their hot press which was lacking. These sketchbooks (both white and especially the grey) are very pricey so I’ve been making my own sketchbooks (even with a hard cover on them!) out of Arches and Saunders Waterford. I’ve done Fabriano Artistico soft press but that was disappointing. The best part is it comes out to only $10 for a 36 page book. Much more cost effective.
Hi Lity! I totally agree with making your own sketchbook. I love that you can choose the paper you want, the size you want, etc. One of these days I am going to try the Etchr Perfect Sketchbook but it just costs too much for my tastes.
@@morrisonwatercolors it really does! :/ But so many artists rave about it and use it it was one of those things where I had to do it just to finally see for myself or i’d always wonder if I was missing out on something. So I’m glad I splurged just once on it. It allowed me to confirm that making my own is still the best option.
What a great find. I've seen this on Cheap Joe's but haven't tried their Kilimanjaro paper. Good to know it's worth a try. BTW, is your tape by chance Hobein Soft Tape? It's my favorite but I can only get it through Vermont Art Supply and always seems too precious to use all the time.
Definitely worth a try, in my opinion. Also, you almost guessed the washi tape! It is actually Nichiban tape from St Louis Art Supply. Thanks for posting Katherine, have a great day! :)
It’s a darn shame these sketchbooks are not available internationally. I am going to reach out to Cheap Joes and let them know they are missing out on a larger audience. Thanks for stopping by and posting a comment!
Always been a Canson fan with mixed media for my pencils. As for watercolor, the 500 series have been my go to or 500 paper I can buy individually from art stores. Now I live in an area where art stores are nonexistent. So I’m restricted to commercial sketchbooks I can buy online.
Have you found a watercolor sketchbook that “sings” to you, like this one does for me? I would sure love to hear what sketchbook works best for you.
I did find a bamboo/cotton - 90bamboo/10 cotton. Hahnemühle is nice for practice but 125 lbs.
But Kilimanjaro is my special primo.
You had me worried for a sec when you almost panned the kilamanjaro. 😊
I know, right?! Thanks for sticking with me and giving me a chance to retract that! :)
I'm sold 😩👏🏼
Also the "I loathe you" spoke to me spiritually 😂😂 I still don't have a favorite sketchbook because I like to try different brands everytime I need a new one, but so far Etchr has been great because I also use it for gouache and acrylic ink and wow does this sketchbook take a lot of washes!
It would be good if you could add a link to this particular sketchbook thanks.

Thank you!

That happened to me too 🎉
Actually, I think it's the other way around. Cheap Joe's uses Fabriano Artistico for it's housebrand Kilimanjaro sketchbooks. At least that's what an expert in the watercolor paper world told me.
@@mkbuike7895That’s what I meant to say. Made in Italy.😊
"The Painting of the Kilimanjaro" is truly among the most epic few minutes of video I've ever seen on TH-cam.

Looking forward to trying it. I only have one water, color sketchbook, and to be honest I don’t even remember what kind it is. The paper does not hold the wash and the paper buckles very easily even when just swatching paint. I’m happy to have found your review.

So glad i came across this video today! I live about 30 minutes from one of Cheap Joe's 2 brick and morter stores.
Hi Alli! Awesome comments, I agree completely!

Hello Morrison, that was a very nice tour through your sketchbooks. I have not bought one or fallen one I am a beginner and also want to find my favorite paper.
I very much think that I have to find my favorite paper on my own.many greetings from Christiane Berlin Germany I have subscribed your channel. 😊😊
@@christianebehr138 thank you for the sub!
You’re hilarious. Also, can you do a tutorial of creating that color wheel!???
It is nice to try different ones. I am like you, I have a lot of supplies sitting around, just waiting to be used! Cheers! :)
@@morrisonwatercolors 😆
Like how you define a palette for each sketchbook.
Thank you! :)
Say what? Arches has a travel journal now? *runs to blick to see if they have it...*
@@gigiartstudiowithartistvir3919 yes!!!! Blick is where I get them. Enjoy❤️
@@gigiartstudiowithartistvir3919 let me know if you find it available for sale, I also need to check it out! :)
@@artonthecreek Thanks for mentioning it!
@@anettenielsen168 Good choice! Can’t go wrong with Etchr.
I like Canson Watercolor XL for the textured look when used with markers. I used it to design the cover art of my cd.
I think the Canson XL would be good for markers. Sounds like it is working well for you for that purpose. Thanks for posting and take care! :)
Great video, subscribed :)
Awesome, thank you for subscribing and welcome to the channel! :)
Take care! :)
@@morrisonwatercolors it does help, thanks for sharing this. I'll give the paper a try.
@@morrisonwatercolors I agree about Jess Karp. I just went to Cheap Joes and ordered a sketchbook! I’m anxious to try it and am sure I will love it. Thank you.
@@loveandlife4222 I hope you like it. I think Cheap Joes has a good return policy if you don’t. Let me know how it turns out.
@@morrisonwatercolors They do! "Our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee ensures that every purchase from Cheap Joe's meets your highest expectations or you can return it for a replacement or refund anytime within 365 days of your purchase." I worked there several years ago, and it was the best company I've ever worked for.
@@polgara28 yes! Their return policy is very good! Thank you for confirming that. :)
❤beautiful you are awesome with that brush I really like your studio.😊😊
Aw, you are too kind. Thank you so much! :)
I have two after a long search! My favorite! I also tried natural white in small size, but not a fan of color or size.
Hi Kathy! I do very much prefer the bright white color over natural white. Thanks for posting! :)
You sold me on the sketchbook, now to get one 😮
Hope you like it!
You make some really good points. It really does boil down to what you want to use the paper for, doesn’t it? Thanks for posting!
Thanks for introduce lots of watercolor sketchbook~❤❤❤👍💕
You are welcome, thank you for watching! :)
Thank you for the nice comments, you are very welcome. :)
Like the look of it x i also like the 100% cotton paper in spiral form. I'd give it a try but not available by the looks of it in Britain.
I wish it was available in the UK. But Fabriano Artistico paper is very similar, so maybe a sketchbook with that type of paper might be available to you? Or maybe you can make your own sketchbook? Thanks for stopping by and posting a comment! :)
The Kilimanjaro sketchbook is not only for landscapes. You can also use it in portrait mode if you rotate it by 90 degrees.
Good point! Absolutely correct!
I really enjoy the Koval sketchbook 😍 handmade stunning stuff for watercolors ❤
Another vote for the Koval sketchbook. I am going to have to check it out. Thanks for psoting! :)
Unfortunately I detest spiral bound notebooks, but great review. I'll stick to Etchr which can be painted on the cover.
Yep, many artists strongly dislike the spiral binding. Etchr is a good alternative. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts.
Loving the dramatics! Chef’s 😘
Use it, love it
Kindred spirit! :)
Shame I can't seem to get these in the UK. Not on Amazon. ☹️
Hi Seabreeze! You are right, Canson is good for mixed media. Some of my favorite portraits have been done using it. Cheers! :)
I would recommend putting a wax medium on top of your finished watercolor cover to protect it.
