How to use ImageJ for leaf area? Step-by-step instruction for ImageJ to measure leaf area

- ImageJ is one of the available PC tools for leaf area measurement (alongside Petiole Pro and other mobile apps). How to use ImageJ properly to get leaf area? What guideline to use in order to get the most correct estimation? Does ImageJ measure area accurately?
Answers to all these questions are available in our new video. We have launched series of video to check tools for leaf area calculation and creating the step-by-step guidelines for other researches to follow.
As an alternative to ImageJ, Petiole Pro is a mobile platform for real time measurements in horticulture and floriculture. One of the modules in Petiole Pro is a Leaf Area Meter, which can help with leaf area estimation using a smartphone.

I used Lafore. But it is not updated, thus it is very slow and can not handle large imagines.

I would like to ask, if it is possible to measure a leaf, if on the picture there is no scale? I know only the dpi of the picture. Thanks before.
Hi Aniko, thank you for your question. As we suggest, you will not get correct measurements in ImageJ without a ruler or any other type of scale on the photo. The software will not have a benchmark to assess the area of leaves.
However, you can try other software for this task.

Does this area refer to one side or both sides of the leaf?

Why choos 5 cm in scale
I followed your instruction, but I always get NaN for Area, although the Leaf I want to measure is read and selected. Do you have an idea what the problem could be?
