Some explanation about the stage setting of this production: In a theatrical programme about money, power and pleasure, the Netherlands Bach Society brings to life the fashionable Leipzig of the early 18th century. The performance begins with Bach's ‘Erwählte Pleißen-Stadt’; we extend this song of praise to the city of Leipzig to our present time. Imagine a company, CEOs talking about the success of their companies, standing behind their lecterns like you have at a press conference. But then, in Bach's expressive cantata ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’ BWV 19, whistleblowers wonder: what about that success? What goes on behind the scenes cannot pass muster. Power, money, sex, the same old story. In the complex story of Telemann's opera ‘Der neumodische Liebhaber Damon, oder die Satyrn in Arcadien’, the satyr Damon tries to conquer a kingdom from which he has been exiled. Like a true contemporary seducer, he explores the boundaries of sexuality and bourgeois decency. The characters from Telemann's opera already enter the stage during BWV 19, the first complete Bach piece in the program. With some artifice here and there, a storyline emerges as if it had been conceived together by the two Baroque composers at the time. Director Caecilia Thunnissen: "In the end, this production is all about the longing for love. Some try to obtain love with wealth, others with macho behaviour. In the costuming, designed by Mahshad Safaei, we play with gender fluidity, the new sexual revolution is happening now, the discussion is hot. We give the contemporary seducer a stage, what does it look like? Someone who plays with decorating, sexuality and eroticism, and who feels free in it."

Der intelligente und unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockorchester im veränderlichen Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Hörenswert vom Anfang bis zum Ende!
A beautiful and powerful cantata by Bach, about the battle of Saint Michael with Satan, performed by the choir and soloists with a passion similar to Bach's. I congratulate NBS on another impeccably performed work by J.S.Bach 🎵😌🎶
This was perfect in the context of the programmatic concert about the relations between money, power and pleasure.. but if taken alone, this production can be problematic because it's very strange, maybe too much. Always grateful nonetheless, the singing and instrumental finesse in the rendition of this cantata for the church couldn't be bettered, even if this time i forced myself to close my eyes
New Stile? Was soll das?
Great performance, as always! But I have to admit I'm not a fan of this strange and sexualized stage setting.. seems out of place for a church cantata.
“Out of place” vis-a-vis the original liturgical purpose is a non-starter argument, unless you want to banish the women from the stage. This is performance in the 21st century. That said, I also do not favor whatever this semi-staging was; it made no sense to me, and it added nothing to the glorious music. So I looked away from time to time, which must have been when anything sexy happened, for I saw nothing of the sort. ?
I am certainly willing to accept the rather unusual, controversial interpretation in exchange for a superb performance of this cantata. The Tenor Recitative and Aria, with the high trumpet sounding the chorale melody is especially noteworthy. Thank you!
It’s not even the weird costumes but the moving around that utterly ruins this. You’ve been presenting these cantatas for years performed to such a high standard, and to come up with some director’s clownery at this point…
I'm not "offended" by the staging of this cantata, nor do I find it to be sacrilegious or blasphemy or woke or whatever. The simple fact for me is that the words and music of this cantata tell a story. And Bach was an absolute master at using his music to infuse the words with even more profound meaning, in order to the tell the story in an even more captivating manner (the astonishing, multilayered tenor aria "Bleibt Ihr Engel" being a perfect example of this). But here, his work is utilized to tell an entirely different story, which means the interpretation is unfortunately no longer in service of the work being performed, but in service of some type of "concept" some theatre director has concocted. Such concepts *can* work, and maybe this one works for the Telemann opera...but with respect to this Bach cantata, IMHO it falls completely flat. And in the context of "All Of Bach", a seminal project dedicated to this truly remarkable composer and his groundbreaking music, I find this...quite unfortunate.
For my friends who are protesting the costumes, don't be alarmed, the lyrics have not been changed and the message is clear: in the fight between good and evil, Christianity is victorious through faith and divine protection.
Let me tell you about the next step. During the Coffee Cantata performance, the sopranos will drink coffee and empty their suddenly full bowels into each other's faces.
