For an instrument like koto to faithfully make music of Bach's time one needs to constantly retune, repurposes strings while constantly augmenting intonation on the fly, and on top of all these, project the great musical thoughts and emotional depth the work itself carries. I can't speak for her, but as a koto player, what we normally do if we have to quickly change the bridge position during a piece, is during setting up, make a small chalk mark (on the sound board) at the point we need to move the bridge to. It is surprisingly accurate, because even if the strings tighten or slacken due to temperature, as they are all the same thickness, they all adjust by the same amount.

@@IfUfindthisURlost That's fine once, but all the time?
She isn't retuning all the time, most of the time she is simply string bending. The string is supported by a bridge, which divides it in to a playing side and an untuned side. When she pushes the string down, she is doing that on the untuned side, in order to tighten it. This can be done in half or whole steps in order to gain two more tones from the same string. When released, the sting returns to its previous tuned note. This is not retuning the instrument, but is equivalent to a guitar player bending a string.

In the 70s I found a recording of Bach's music played on Japanese instruments it was a marvelous recording that I cherished for a long time. This performance, although the difficulties of the composition and the inherent difficulties of the koto, is of such beauty that any praise to the performer falls short of my thoughts and words. ¡Bravo, bravísimo! Thanks for such beauty. There's something about the Koto that has the warmth of flesh. Certainly if Bach knew about the instrument he would wrote exquisite music for it, as he did for the lute and the cello.
From the first chord to the last note's resonance fading, good balance and expression between tension and peace had me listen to your interpretation many times. A well-chosen repetoire and sincere respect from Seoul.
Amazing, one is transported to a recollection of Lute and Harpsichord timbres... yet this is unique. Your rubato and dynamic sense are superb, even invoking the ponticello and tasto of the original violin manuscript (BWV 1004). Your roaming intonation and tuning changes/string depressions are a sight to behold! Bravo Maestra.

I've been watching this video for many times now but still can't find the words to express my feelings. Doesn't matter, others already have said everything what possibly could be said. I just want to add, it was a great occasion when a great piece, a great artist and a great instrument met each other. And the most important thing: the devotion to the piece was unsurpassable.
Unbelievable beautiful - she is not only able to play this complicated piece - she can also tune the instrument while performing, just beyond this world. I have heard this chaconne being played by many artists and also on unimaginable instruments and all of them where up to this monumental piece of music. I got to know this chaconne not before I was in my 80s - I am thankful that I didn't die before that happened,
When you say 'tuning' are you referring to Ms. Kimura placing her fingers on the other side of the bridge and pressing the string down? That would just be temporarily bending the string to get chromatics. That is often done to get vibrato, but in this case, it allows her to tune the 25 strings to a single key, and then bend the notes for any chromatics needed in the score. UPDATE: Sorry, you are correct, I see that she is moving the bridges as the piece progresses!
All you need is Bach, artists in love with music, complex instruments they play and ears to listen. Your soul connects with its homeland and a new life begins ❤
As a guitarist, I played this wonderful work with tears in my eyes, so deep and transcendental is the wonder of J. S. Bach's musical thought. I found everything here while listening to this work played on a Koto. The delicacy, the depth, I would even say the respect that we must have for this work so demonstrative of the deep connection that J. S. Bach had with the world of sound. A wonderful interpretation that goes beyond understanding, so much so that the adaptation on this instrument requires constant adjustment with the alterations. A performance that leaves us speechless, but makes us live a pure moment of bliss. Thank you so much Mrs. Maya Kimura for daring to confront this immense challenge with so much sensitivity, and a mastery that makes us completely forget all the difficulties of adaptation.
What some humans can achieve! This is just insane 🤯 I us no idea a koto was capable of all this. Bending pitches, moving bridges and still playing with such emotion. The major section transition 8:05 is beautiful 😍
Absolutely breathtaking. As a pianist, this interpretation gives such a breath of fresh air to the piece entirely. Taking this piece at this slower tempo with so much space and air between harmonies creates such an intense atmosphere that is so captivating. Bravo 👏🏼
Wow, what a treat! Knowing Bach's fondness for experimentation, I am sure he would have been delighted not only by the technical challenge of performing such a chromatic piece on an instrument best suited for pentatonic music, but the really beautiful and compelling phrasing and musicality of Ms. Kimura's playing. I heard this piece performed on the harp before, but the Koto adds a dynamic bite that just brings another dimension to those dramatic melody lines.
Yes, imagine any other instrument, other than the human voice, that you can tune and re-tune on the fly, so to speak. Truly mind boggling virtuosity, that.
The runs of 16th notes are handled beautifully. Masterfully nuanced playing. Changing key on the fly by depressing the string of shifting the bridge is also a wonderful demonstration of proficiency of the musician.
Absolutely and utterly amazing! Many years ago, I saw Segovia play this - but now I think this is my favourite. It's not a question of the evident skill or the difficulty of the instrument, but the sheer musicality of the interpretation.
Not only was the interpretation beautiful, the mastery of the instrument and the dificulty of playing bent over it just blew my mind. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.
Lovingly performed and faithful to the original. Your technical mastery of the koto is on full display. I really enjoyed the performance. Thank you for sharing this video.
@@dcc70A musician can't interpret a song? If she can't be too rubato, I guess she shouldn't be playing it on a koto, either. I mean if one were trying to be pedantic about it, it seems the tempo would be the least of one's concerns.

Funny, my own classical guitar teacher told me the same thing when I was 18 and asked to play this song. She said I need to be older to properly interpret the song. I picked it up again when I was 37 and it took me nearly 2 years to play it to my satisfaction. This woman plays it beautifully on an instrument so foreign to Western music is absolutely amazing.
Yes!!!! When the last measure was about to sound, the single D note was the greatest one of them all, and especially the way it sounds on this instrument. And I think it summarises the singularity Bach experienced. The divinity he was so commited and thankful to. That this whole piece with its extraordinary grandiosity, just ending on a single whole note. Beautiful rendition!
The Koto's pinched timber and deep tones brings some intensity and strength to the piece, and the interpretation is filled with dedication and careful attention. Specificities of the instruments and 'signature' techniques are used with such intelligence and demonstrate such a deep understanding of the original piece. It would almost be rude to mention the technique and the execution at this poiint. Thank you, I wish I could reach your level of musicianship in my old days, which means that I hear forward to hearing from you.
WOW! Once again, proof of the universality of Bach's creations. A piece originally written for violin or lute now played on an instrument native to a land on the other side of the world from Bach's homeland.
If the performer's facial expressions are not the highest priority for you, then may I humbly suggest that you may not have a very interesting perspective on the musical arts.
I am STUNNED to see this performed on the koto. What a masterful performance. There aren’t even words for how impressed I am. Thank you so much for the time you must have spent working on this, and thank you for recording it to share with us!

As a violinist, whose favourite piece of music is the Bach Chaconne, I just want to say
WOWWWW
Mesmerizing. Hypnotic. Magical, Beautiful.
Thank you.
Really beautiful. At certain passages it moves the soul even more than the violin does.
I was waiting for a standing ovation of the crowd at the end of the video... You deserve one, Maya!
Sublime! Bach transcends all boundaries, your artistry commands the utmost respect, Bravo!
Incredible performance! That’s not just playing it. That’s putting it on your shoulders and walking out the door with it!
!!!!!!!
Bach wrote music - he left it to us to play it - even on instruments he never knew about (and even those we still haven't invented...)
Absolutely breathtaking. As a pianist, this interpretation gives such a breath of fresh air to the piece entirely. Taking this piece at this slower tempo with so much space and air between harmonies creates such an intense atmosphere that is so captivating. Bravo 👏🏼
Felicitaciones 🎉20.7.2024
😢this performance had me crying. so touching so so beautiful
She is amazing! Wow!😮 Moving the bridges while playing would be so hard to master.
The rhythm at the beginning already is far from what Bach wrote.
A little too free with the rubato
@@dcc70A musician can't interpret a song? If she can't be too rubato, I guess she shouldn't be playing it on a koto, either.
I mean if one were trying to be pedantic about it, it seems the tempo would be the least of one's concerns.
This is the most extraordinary thing I've seen. Not just the superb performance, but the knowledge and mastery of one's instrument. Tuning on the fly! And what a beautiful sound! Knock out performance of this wonderful Bach piece. Just wow! Thabk you for sharing and thank you introducing me to this instrument. Wow! ❤❤❤
You said what I wanted to say! Spot on.
respect from China!
Maestra Kimura Maya-san has opened a whole new world of beauty in her stunning, incredibly expressive and heart-felt performance of this epic Bach classic on the Japanese koto.
It seemed like the music organically came up from the earth itself through her koto.

Words fail me here. This breathtakingly beautiful.... Touched by God.
I can't believe what I just saw 😮🙏

One of the greatest Bach interpretations. Very deep, passionate and very baroque. Rhythm and Notes inégales are marvelous.
She is Making a sound through her own will ! It was impressive and astonishing.
Absolutely beautiful. I wish there were more yranscriptions played on this instument for the world to hear.
@@didiermontagnier6114you should upload your chaconne.
...a trip to God. Thanks to Johann Sebastian and to you for this great rendering..
Absolutelly wonderful! one of the best musicians ever listened. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Absolutely brilliant, technically and musically. A true master capable of performing this absolute premium master piece by JSB.
WOW! Once again, proof of the universality of Bach's creations. A piece originally written for violin or lute now played on an instrument native to a land on the other side of the world from Bach's homeland.
Many thanks to the cameraman for cutting out of the scene, for most of the time, the most interesting things to see. What a genius.
If the performer's facial expressions are not the highest priority for you, then may I humbly suggest that you may not have a very interesting perspective on the musical arts.
@@dzhaughnne he means what she is actually doing when she is playing the instrument...
@@dzhaughnne You are insane. Watching her perform on the instrument is what's important - not her facial expressions. Not her dress.

Wonderful. Very moving. Bach himself would be amazed. Greetings and love from Korea.

Unbelievable. Such an achievement for you and your instrument.

Just Wow - never would have thought this piece would have ever been considered as playable on a Koto..
Amazing effort!
