Not super-important, but curious: I just noticed that her chanterelle string is wrapped around the peg outside the pegbox. Ah, same for the low (outboard) string of the low-D course.
Ah, and _his_ lute has both strings of the low-G strung outside the pegbox.
On my similar (but less-pro!) instrument, string tension does sometimes pull out on the low-D peg.

Being mostly familiar with John Dowland's lute songs, I was so impressed with the complexity of the "Forlorn Hope Fancy"; if I hadn't already read the name of the composer, I might have mistaken it for a work by J. S. Bach. Is it the case that most lutenists don't include this piece in their concerts or recordings, due to its particular difficulty?
I played it on guitar on a recital. Incredibly difficult piece. I can tell you that I did not play it as well as she.
The subject of this lute fugue is the same as the second subject of Bach's A minor Fantasy and Fugue BWV 904. My heavens, it does develop into Bach-like texture....

@@dbadagna I suspect that that motif is one of the "standard old Renaissance contrapuntist hacks", sibling of the "lamento bass", "romanesca" etc (cf Gjerdingen), that both Robinson and JSB were aware of. If you like this sort of thing, check out my channel.
Yes, shows that Bach summarized all previous music. Note the resemblance to the chromatic Canon in Art of Fugue. That's on a celestial level.

Beautiful playing but the sound recordist did not check for rattles and buzzes and other extraneous noise and who left that creaky chair in there?!!
believe me, it is mot easy to find a place without any external noise. The other noises are fro the lute wood.
