The closest anyone will ever get to meeting a silent film star is visiting their grave... Thank you for making this tribute.

Beautiful music along with the tributes to these legends. We owe them so much respect for all they’ve done. We would not have the movies today without them. I hope they are never forgotten. RIP to all of them.

D.W. Griffith is buried about 15 yards from my best friend in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, just 25 miles east of here (Louisville, KY). He has a very nice gravesite as befitting another great pioneer of not just silent movies but movies for all time.

Lillian Gish is still remembered to this day in her hometown of Massillon, Ohio - a short road that connects Ohio Route 172 to Ohio Route 21 is named Lillian Gish Boulevard. There is also a small stone block structure (I don't know what it actually is) that has two paintings of her on it - one side features a scene from 'The Scarlet Letter', and the other has her portrait with her birth (1893) and death (1993) years next to it. She may be gone, but Massillon certainly hasn't forgotten her!

Most (over 75%) of all silent films made are lost forever and of those that exist, will also be lost if not properly stored and handled. That said, there are a few hundred silent films that have been released on DVD and Blu-Ray, so I guess these will be available to future generations for viewing, albeit a very selective group they will be.

I was really miffed when I later discovered these are ALL DVD-R, meaning the discs will probably deteriorate in my lifetime! So now, I'm looking to make some backups and one source is YT.

I'd like to recommend "SIlent Star" by Colleen Moore and "Vamp--the Rise and Fall of Theda Bara" by Eve Golden, two stars who could handle fame and live long, positive lives. Louise Brooks wrote the excellent "Lulu in Hollywood". Glad to see Louise Brooks next to Clara Bow whom she admired and praised as an actress in both the spoken and written word.

rockisheaven I had been watching more silent films and Golden age Hollywood films recently too. I have always been fascinated with them and the actors/actresses and the history behind it. Such a different time period. Stars like Charlie Chaplin, Lon Chaney, Gloria Stuart and Fay Wray only come once a lifetime and it does sadden me to be aware of that. How would a simple conversation be with them...to me, it also serves as a reminder to try and not take people and life for granted. Especially our loved ones. I'm 23 and I wish fellow millennials would be as open and engaging to appreciating such films.

Not sure if anyone else made a comment about the Barrymore's, just in case though, John , Lionel, and their sister Ethel were born in my hometown of Philadelphia Pa. They lived for a time on Arch St. There is a hotel in Philadelphia called the Hyatt that had " The Ethel Barrymore" room. Also John was buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery initially, but some years later his remains were moved to a California cemetery. I'm sure everyone knows that he is actress Drew Barrymore's grandfather.
