    I bought some Eley High Velocity Hollow Points and they have just floored me! .1's at 50 yds and .3's at 100 out of my Anschutz 1710 DKL Sporter. Only Lapua X-Act can compete with that in my rifle.

    Thanks for the video. I enjoy this type of testing. I typically do something similar by allowing 2 shots per 10 to be discarded from the group size, when having fun with friends and family. But also to allow for environmental influences and ammo quality. I might measure and weigh a batch, to see if it makes an obvious difference

    I got a case (500 rounds) of this off of the prize table at a local NRL22 match. I honestly thought it was Eley club when i snagged it. Wouldn't group in any of my NRL22 guns, so my boy has been burning through it in his single shot savage.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had great luck with it. It just shot pretty darn good in all the rifles in this video. But I’ve had bad lots of Center X so I wouldn’t give up on it. Nor am I saying every lot of this ammo is good. It’s a Roll of the dice every time we buy different ammunition that isn’t lot tested.

    • @jonathonschram3429
      @jonathonschram3429 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @RimfireSS well, to be fair, we don't really need to roll the dice anymore. Send your barreled action to AZ and let Lupua do your lot testing for you. Or Eley in Texas (I think anyway). One of the companies had a semi trailer where they would lot test at the rimfire nationals when it was in St Louis I believe.
      I went the Lupua route a couple years ago and sent my action to Mesa. They told me they were working on a similar setup in Indiana or Ohio for the future. They tested like 6 or 7 lots...emailed me a report. They had a suggested lot, cold bore shot, etc etc. At the time I did it, if you bought x amount of cases the entire procedure was free except rifle shipping back. I bought 22 cases, and shoot the same ammo in my BR rifle and my NRL22 rifle.
      When I run dry, I'll go ahead and do the same thing again. Way, way cheaper than buying a bunch of random lots and trying to determine minute differences at an outside range over the course of a couple months of varying atmospherics.

  • @fosterprice5690
    @fosterprice5690 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Gidday Don. Interesting video, thanks! I've done similar tests with various cheap ammos, and I've found the very occasional "hummer" two that spring to mind have been particularlots of Eley Club abd S&B SV HP - both these shot amazingly well through my 3 best rifles and I bought a case of the S&B. But as Jaia from RFC points out "you're only as good as your last lot" and this seems to especially apply to the economy end ammos. Makes for good fun testing various lots though to find a winner!

    Don, I've done sorting by weight and rim thickness. The best and most repeatable results I've ever had came from sorting Remington Subsonic by weight. The heavier rounds shot the best. The theory is that the heavier rounds have fewer voids and inclusions in the lead bullet. (The lead bullet makes up most of the weight of the round, so it has the biggest effect on total weight.)
    That being said, with that ammo it wasn't worth the cost to get a decent amount of highly accurate ammunition. Sorting an entire brick was also a serious time investment. And with other brands of ammunition I've sorted the results weren't nearly as dramatic or repeatable.
    It would be interesting to see how you choose to sort and if it works for you.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve tried it all, weight, rim thickness, loose crimp vs tight crimp. And all of the above and I’ve never been able to identify bad rounds.

    • @sapago4166
      @sapago4166 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RimfireSS My opinion is that sorting by weight works if you are sorting ammo that has poor quality control. I've never had much luck sorting ammo that already shot fairly well, such as CCI Standard Velocity. My guess is Ely Contact will be the same, where the variations between rounds aren't big enough to see much improvement from sorting.

      @@RimfireSS i get it. So many ways to sort. I sort by rim thickness and do occasionally sort by weight as well so a 2 step process. However there is too many factors. The primer compound may ignite hotter in one round compared to another, the actual grains of powder can vary round to round and the projectile can have variance round to round. But for cheap ammo for testing and plinking i would certainly buy to have on hand. Its decent and considerably better in performance to some. Too bad we cannot load our own for better consistency.

    I've shot a lot of contact, especially out of a pistol. I have found that it is precise for the money, but 1 out of 100 rounds is a cull because of malformed bullets- the culls have a "burr" or "casting flash" . At times they won't chamber in a semi auto because of this without a little help. I'm not sure if it is present in all lots, but it was in the 2 lots I have purchased. I also found that they require more frequent cleaning of the chamber because they tend to leave more residue, perhaps because of the lube.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’ve had really no problems with feeding. I do get the occasional dud round or over/under charge, or wild flier which is probably from a burr or casting issue like you suggested. But after making the videos I just made of the CCI and how bad it shoots. I’ll be buying more Contact as it beats the pants off anything CCI is producing and it costs about the same as the Standard Velocity.

    Excellent array of rifles! Very interesting comparison and some good results. Weight check and rim measure would be interesting to see if you can identify duds. According to some experts, 20" seems to be the optimum barrel length...after that the bullet starts slowing down through friction and powder is burnt up. This could account for the slower velocity on the second rifle. Fascinated to hear what other Tubers think! Great shooting and video as always Don. Thanks!

    Dang! I wish my relatively new B-14r shot Contact as well as yours. I bought 2 bricks based on the reviews I've seen. So far, after about 450 rounds, Contact is the worst performer for me. Hard to evaluate a new rifle with the groups I'm getting from it. I haven't tried the real expensive ammo yet, but so far the best performers for my B-14r are SK standard+ and tac-22. I got a small one hole group from Wolf match extra yesterday, but the rest of the groups with it were average. I wish I could try one ammo in multiple guns like you instead of the other way around!

      My B14r shoots everything fairly well. Think I got lucky. Try the Eley Semi auto bench rest, regular and Outlaw. Those shoot excellent for me as well. Is the Bergara your only .22? Or are there others?

    Another great video. I find it interesting that all your rifles shot the Contact very well and fairly similar. I would have expected more if a difference between them. You do have some really nice rigs though. One question. Did you try this ammo in your 10/22 with Kidd barrel? I tried it and it shot well but I had a heck of a time getting the rounds to chamber. It appeared as though the bullet/casing diameter was a bit oversized and I had to manually force it in. Just curious if you had a similar experience. Thanks!

    I noticed on your 457 Open, after the “dud” round, each shot was “spewing” something out (check the video) much more so than the 1st 2 5-round groups (in those, mostly gas, very little particulates but moving quickly), but the last 3 groups, the particulates were really coming out and falling just out just beyond the table.
    Edit: I wonder if it is cartridge filler? Watching the rest of the other rifles, it would be visually apparent after 10 rounds for each of the other rifles. Wonder if that is why it is cheaper as non-match ammo.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  ปีที่แล้ว

      I clean them more then I have to. I’d say 3-400 rounds. I use BoreTech C4 carbon remover. I take a wet patch and run it up the barrel. Then I take a new patch wet it down and put it on top of the carbon ring. I let it sit there for 20 minutes. Then I take a brass brush put it in just far enough to get over the carbon ring and then turn it clockwise about 15 times, then with small strokes over the carbon ring probably another 10 strokes. Then run a poly brush up the barrel maybe 20 times. Then I run dry patches through it till they come out clean. Usually around 8. Clean the bolt face with a dry poly brush then wipe it down with brakeleen. Run a CLP wet paper towel through the receiver, then a dry one. Small amount of Lucas gun oil on the bolt and your done. Takes about 30 minutes and it’s usually a pretty deep clean. I find most shoot better clean after about 30 rounds have been fired and the bore is re fouled.
