Precision tuning your 10/22 for The Tightest Groups Possible

  • In todays video I show you the best way to "Tune" your 10/22 to your ammunition. Swapping between different manufacturer bolts will change your groups, and sometimes the change is drastically good. Each bolt tested had a different head space measurement, and this video will show you just how different each bolt made the rifle shoot. It's quite shocking.

    Great video Don, I sent two 10/22s to Connecticut Precision Chambering for the exact thing you did today, he tunes a stock bolt to .043 headspace, squaring up the bolt to match the barrel chamber face, barrel set back and reboring with match chamber and recrowning. He shipped them back today so I’ll know more soon, Randy knows 10/22s. Thanks again for all your projects.

      I’ll have to check him out. The bolt definitely has more to do with accuracy then I previously thought. I used to think they were made to print and had the same general geometry. There is definitely a difference and after measuring everything the only real difference I have found is the headspace.

      One of my 10/22s is the Competition Model, Randy told me the only Ruger parts is firing pin and charging handle. The receiver and bolt are Brownells. It shot pretty well but the chamber was sloppy and the headspace was good. The All Weather 10/22 Stainless got the whole treatment and also threaded the barrel for accessories. Hopefully I’ll have them reassembled and tested by the end of the weekend.

      I received the 10/22s back from Randy and got them scoped and zeroed. By the time I got them back I had traded the Ruger Competition Model for another toy but my buddy that has it now says it shoots as well as his Bergara B14r, I haven’t shot it yet but I have before groups at 100yds so I’ll know soon how well it does. The All Weather is just a plain Jane synthetic stock with stainless tapered barrel. He did his magic on the bolt, .043 headspace, setback the barrel with match chamber, threaded the barrel for the silencer. With seeing the threading you wouldn’t know anything was changed changed. I shot multiple 3rd groups while tightening the action screw beginning at 10in lbs and settled at 30in lbs for my best groups. Funny thing, they were all MOA or smaller at 50yds. It likes SK SemiAuto and before I left I shot one round at a shoot and see target to see if I could bullseye one, dead center. This is going to be my sleeper because in the end my RimX may not shoot $3500 better than this $300 10/22. Give Randy a call and tell him Luther sent you

    Chamber type effects headspace, if you take different ammo and measure diameter at the bullet, or lube rings , then measure the distance from the rim to the end of that lube ring you can see how a shorter chamber, or one with more angle at the tip of the reamer would actually be tight on the bullet. If it’s too tight, especially in a semi auto the extra headspace could start to effect accuracy. I’ve got specs for at least 25 reamers plus my own custom, many are only different by a ten thousandth hear or there but if you look at the Bentz (made for semi autos) you can see why the shells extract, where a match chamber, depending on the rifle to allow a loaded or even a fired case to extract. I worked for some time get a reamer that just allows SK and Ely to chamber and extract at 0.043” headspace.
    It seems a lot of chamber designs were made as the long rifle round was developed by multiple manufacturers and a standard got makers closer to each other, match ammo will always be tighter

      I was reading about this a few weeks ago and tried to explain it in the video (poorly) so I cut it out. Some bolts from my testing matched barrels better then others. And I’m sure it has to do with how the chamber was cut like what you have experienced. I’m getting better at explaining things but fail miserably sometimes, then I get flustered and it hits the cutting room floor.

I've been thinking of one since i built my rifle from parts, the bolt having some corrosion and pitting, but not on important surfaces, and wanted to make it look better. nice to hear it's at least a little better than stock. I think it’s really going to depend on the ammunition your using. The stock bolt is set up more for high velocity bulk ammunition where the KIDD is better for Match ammunition but will still work well with the bulk stuff. @marktracht7782 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Lilja shoots better than I do for sure. It's a 20" heavy barrel and at 50 yards it will shoot inside a dime a good part of the time and inside a nickel most of the time. I shoot outdoors at a fairly windy site and mostly shoot Norma TAC-22 and some RWS target. Will spend money on guns but too cheap to buy spendy ammo. After your previous message I ordered a Tandemkross bolt and put it in the Ruger receiver with the Ruger Stainless barrel that CPC had worked and it shoots really well. It's my lightweight gun and the Lilja barrel gun is my heavy one. The Ruger receiver and barrel seem plenty happy with CCI SV and the Lilja likes Norma or RWS Target Rifle much better than CCI. Didn't like the Tandemkross charging handle(sharp edges) and their DoubleKross mags required a bunch of filing and sanding to get them in and out of the rifle. Next step is to switch bolts but winter here in Spokane WA is interfering with my fun.@@RimfireSS

It looks like you have formed a liking for them so may I humbly suggest the following. Do a test on your magazines ( the ten round only) and see what you get. I have 25 or more ten round mags and only four pass the accuracy test. You can wrap up a lot of money on parts, but if you don't do a through test of your mags, you will never truly know where you have a issue. Trust me on this my friend! The rotary mags will at lest fit snug with no wobble. Even then some mags will feed the round in too high or low. You can't start off by shaving a round and expect it to group. That is why you see benchrest folks loading single rounds with great care.I could flood you with 10/22 information but don't want to step on your board. I purchased a couple of mags from a company (TI) that had adjust screws but I could never get them where I wanted them to be. Have you tried loading your stack mags and hand cycling them ? That is another little thing that adds up. Magic mark the top 12 0'clock position on the brass on the top round. Then hand cycle it slowly by hand. Then eject it on something very soft and look for any skinned spots. You can normally tell a good mag as you will see when the bolt picks it up, it aligns with the chamber as it enters. If they enter high, I take a Dremel and take off some of the feed lip a little at a time. If they enter low, throw them away or give them to a competitor. :) I set my spring on 10 round mags at one full turn plus three flats. Clean them with silicon spray. That’s a 28” Green Mountain Barrel, it’s a tad long, but they do make a nice 24” barrel that shoots great also but I’ll leave a link below. Nothing wrong with the KIDD barrel and bolt combo. There chambers are alittle tight so you may have issues with some Eley ammo. But there good for the most part. I can honestly say I’ve never been disappointed with any of the Green Mountain barrels I own. The KIDD bolt is a good match up with that barrel as well. It kinda got screwed by the ammunition in this test.

I measured 8 of my bolts today and the two I tested in this video are the only ones with different headspace measurements. I’m sure all these manufacturers are going for .043 So I think these are out of spec…. Lol. After the testing I did today on 4 with the same headspace, they still all shot differently. I was doing some reading and apparently it has a lot to do with how the chamber was cut and what chamber is used. From what I can tell so far, certain bolts do match up better with certain barrels. I have done this test with all 4 of my GM barrels and everyone prefers the Brownells bolt. And by alot. At least with Lapua ammunition. This could get pretty complicated since there are so many different bolts being made by different manufacturers. All I can say is these are my results, yours may be different so take all this with a grain of salt.

    Hey Don, got a question about your results. You said at the beginning of the video, the closest your headspace is to the rim thickness of the ammo you use, it should produce the greatest accuracy.
    However, your measurements of the three different bolts, the Kidd should have been the closest to the SK ammo you were using. (Brownells - .0465, Stock-.0485, Kidd-.0435)
    Am I missing something? Any idea why the Brownells did better? TIA.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Honestly the KIDD bolt got screwed by two rounds that measured in the 1080s causing a couple fliers that killed the group average. Without those 2 rounds the group average (while it probably wouldn’t have beat the Brownells bolt) it would have been alot closer to it. I would rather have a KIDD bolt then a Brownells any day. I’ve have problems with light strikes with those bolts. Installed Kidd bolts and the problem went away. I was in no way recommending any of these bolts, just that if your super serious about getting the absolute smallest groups possible, it wouldn’t hurt to have a few different bolts from different manufacturers to see if it would help group size and consistency. I’m doing more testing tomorrow with 4 different bolts with almost the same headspace to see if those shoot differently. There so many different factors at play here testing .22lr, inconsistent ammunition, out of spec parts, different types of chambers, different depth chamber reamers. None of this stuff is “to print” and when you start mixing and matching different manufacturers parts you never know what your gonna get. Lol, it’s a deep ass rabbit hole with no bottom.

    • @susanball1311
      @susanball1311 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ihe light strikes are most likely due to the firing pin not being pinned or captured. Save some of the fired brass and give them a look. If the strikes are more to the outside of the rim, you will get a group spread. I have taken firing pins and ground them down to get the strike from the edge to center. (@RimfireSS
    43 minutes ago
    I probably should have demonstrated that in the video. Sometimes I forget people don’t know how to do this stuff. So the measurement is from the bolt face to the bottom of the recess that holds the round and the firing pin comes out and strikes the round. That measurement is your headspace. It’s kind of a pain in the butt to get the correct measurement. I’m going to do another video about this, I’ll demonstrate it on that video.).

      Not sure where your going with this your comment is all over the place. Headspace is headspace, only on the 10-22 you can’t just add barrel shims or shim the bolt to change it like on most bolt actions. It’s set in stone on the bolt you use, unless you have a mill or know someone who does.

    Suppose you could measure the rim thicknesses and match the correct dimensioned rims to your bolt or buy a brand of ammunition with thicker rims??? Save buying a bolt or multiple bolts. Check this yourself by measuring the shell rims within a box of ammo or from brand to brand if you aren't aware of the different rim thicknesses.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We’ll of corse I’m aware of differing rim thickness. And if the same or the optimal ammunition was available at any given time, say SK or Lapua that would be a good point. But we all know that some manufacturers have a hard time keeping up with demand. Point of the video is for some reason, (and I don’t think headspace is the whole reason for why these bolts shoot differently) each bolt shoots differently. Is it a combination of ignition and headspace? Hard to tell but there’s definitely a difference in how these bolts shoot any ammunition regardless of there headspace. So why not try and find the best (optimal) bolt for your rifle that shoots all ammunition the best it possibly can.
