    People keep hating on this game without any noteworthy arguments.
    You keep on collecting well reasoned arguments that are actually meant to describe how the game interacts with the player, but additionally they express why the game is so good. Thank you.

    This amount of exploration has never been explored before. Thankfully, you have shed more light into this detail. And with your explanations, it could be possible to make a Super Mario Maker level, using this method of exploration.

      Not too sure about that...Nintendo wouldn't force new players to do something like that. If a player that is new to platformers plays that game, then it would be very frustrating for that player.

    Another thing I like is how they made the collectable item no longer a Star Coin but actual Power Stars. Granted there are only the green variations but it just adds a sense of accomplishment to getting them. Whenever you play 3-D Mario games you always want to get all those Stars because you don't really beat the game unless you do. So you play 3-D World and you see a shiny green colored Power Star. It's like "I have played previous 3-D Mario games to know Stars are important. Got to get all of them." And they are. They unlock stuff and you need all of them in Worlds 1-11 to unlock the 12th World. They also unlock individual stages in worlds which are marked by Bowser Statues.

    Multiplayer in this game is also fun, but in a portal 2 co-op sort of way. Soon-to-be-ex-friends troll like crazy, fight over grabbing things for points first, and often force you to miss secrets by rushing ahead or heading straight for the flagpole (and without good communication, some of this could happen by accident even when playing with friends who aren't trying to troll, compete, or mess with each other).

    Having played Super Mario Odyssey without playing 3D World, I didn't think the games had anything in common structure-wise. But thanks to this video I see that Odyssey's philosophy of "cram every inch of the level full of little secrets" was used just the same way in the 3D World. Odyssey just took the philosophy and applied to more open sandbox levels, while 3D World used it in linear levels. Super cool and it makes me even more hyped to finally play 3D World when the Switch port comes out!!

    13:40 Well, I don't really like placing a secret in what would normally be a death trap. That kind of gives you the feeling that potentially any bottomless pit can have a star, making you jump into actual death pits. There needs to be some sort of indication, that this is no "normal" death pit.

  • @kyleeeee_c

  • @Stephen-Fox

    Since you mentioned this being the first game you noticed rewarding you for failures by hiding hidden things in places where you don't naturally get to unless you fail at something, Sonic 3 does in an early level; one of the first special stage entrances in the game is hidden on a path that you need to fail a jump to reach (And, I don't think it's coincidence that Sonic 3 is the first Sonic game that starts to actively reward exploration rather than simply presenting alternate paths through levels depending on how you deal with obstacles)

  • @casperdewith
    @casperdewith 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    10:00 This level section is symmetrical. Over one of the deadly shockwave emitters, there’s a block. An observant player might notice that, try it out on the other one as well, and get rewarded a power-up.

  • @pukalo
    @pukalo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    On that point about the game rewarding failure: There is a castle in Super Mario World where you have to ride these blocks that spread out to make a platform. At the last section before the boss the blocks will go into a pit. Riding the blocks into the pit reveals a small reward. Similar things can also be seen in the New Super Mario Bros series where you can ride sinking sand into a secret area to get a star coin.

    The only problem with hiding secrets is that it doesn't make sense to have them required to unlock secret super difficult levels. The people who want to play the super difficult levels are not always the same people who want to find hidden collectables. DKC:TF has collectables that unlock super hard levels, but since the KONG letters are always in the open it's always fair to players who want the hard levels. In fact, the same abilities that would favor a hard level allow you to collect the KONG letters.

  • @KyletheReflectionist

    Okay, I agree with most of these points, but there are a few I don't.
    First: I don't like how some stages require a certain character. If you play through a level and find all the secrets, but don't complete it because you were the wrong character? That's dumb. It feels like padding.
    2nd: I can understand what you meant by that one green star where you jump into the pit to get it, but I also think it's unfair that you get no hint towards that green star at all. You just have to be lucky enough to mess up. Maybe if there was some kind of sound coming from the pit, it would have made more sense.
    3rd: The time limit. I know it can be argued that it's there to make you replay levels, but in a game that's all about exploring, there should be no time limit, or it should be much less strict. In levels where you are encouraged to go fast, it's fine, but not in the majority of the levels.
    Lastly, one of the main focuses of this game was multiplayer, and I feel like if you play this game multiplayer, it nullifies almost all of what was said. Exploring the levels in a group isn't as fun, because some areas are harder to get to with multiple people. And then at the end of the level, the game rewards whoever got the most points with a crown, which encourages the more competitive players to not work together, or get in the way of each other just scrambling for points. Also, playing multiplayer and exploring makes the time limit unbearable sometimes.
    So yeah, I think this game is pretty fun single player, but a total mess multiplayer. Personally, I much prefer super Mario 3d Land to this game, but that's just how I feel.

  • @Korajiyo

    I feel like this is sarcastic sometimes. I mean "Players have to challenge platforming norms, like how pits normally kill you", when praising a secret hidden in a pit.
    I mean, it just doesn't make sense so it have to be sarcastic. HIdding secrets in places that normally kill you is just assanine, especially without any form of hint.
