Red Dead Redemption Stories: Dutch Van Der Linde (All Cutscenes)

  • Dutch van der Linde is a central character and one of the primary antagonists of Red Dead Redemption, and a central character in Red Dead Redemption II.
Dutch van der Linde was the leader of the infamous Van der Linde Gang, which once operated in West Elizabeth. Notable gang members included Arthur Morgan, Micah Bell, John Marston, Abigail Marston, Bill Williamson, and Javier Escuella.
At the time, Dutch was an altruistic and idealistic rogue, believing the gang could make a difference in the world. He fashioned himself into a Robin Hood figure, taking money from those who had more than they could ever need, and giving it to those who had very little, and truly needed it. He saw himself as a symbol of the romanticized Wild West, and a humanitarian champion of the people, opposing government control, supporting individual liberty and punishing general human cruelty and selfishness. His romantic image and charisma inspired his gang to believe in his vision of a "Savage Utopia", and it was in the name of Dutch and his cause that they committed crimes such as murder and robbery.
As the years rolled by, though, Dutch slowly began to realize the futility of his cause. With new technology making it easier for the government to exert control over the people, liberty had given way to bureaucracy. The violence and greed of humanity had not stopped, and no one had been inspired by his example. His work had ultimately changed nothing. Worse still, the truth of his own hypocrisy crept deeper and deeper into Dutch's thoughts. He and his gang had attempted to change the world for the better, yet in doing so, they had become the worst humanity had to offer. His idealism turned into extreme anger, and Dutch gradually descended into madness, masking his pain with meaningless violence and an unfocused hatred of everything and everyone around him. In the end, Dutch himself caused the disillusionment of the other gang members.
Van der Linde had not been seen nor heard from in several years, and despite claims of sightings was thought to have perished in a fire following a botched robbery in 1906. During one of the cutscenes in "The Gates of El Presidio", it is rumored that Dutch is in Colombia and not likely to be seen ever again. This is proven to be false and Dutch goes on to play a central role in the remainder of the game.

@@shaunogden9706 obviously, but rdr2 is a prequel and at the end, John and Dutch meet on top of a snowy mountain while pointing guns at each other. This shows us that Dutch is obviously talking about the meeting with Micah and Sadie.
Rockstar didnt have Johns entire backstory written down, but they had an idea of what they wanted it to be like. Lines like when Dutch says "we gotta stop meeting like this" prove this because its almost the exact same situation as rdr2's epilogue.

Arthur was his last straw. Only reason he didn’t kill John in RDR2’s epilogue is because he only went after Micah to avenge Arthur. Dutch was so easy to hate in RD1 because he was basically ust a common outlaw and murderer.
Dutch's story is definitely a tragedy! Yes he was always a stone cold killer but he only did so in RD2 when he felt like it would be for the best interests of all those he love and cared for.
Dutch's issue was he was obsessed with "One last heist" in order to start a new life. I guess you could say this was his addiction. In the end that mentality began to cost him his sanity and led him down a path that ultimately led to his death.

Yep, the whole ending didn't make much logical sense, but it couldn't deviate from its course because of Red Dead 1. At the mountaintop, John finds Micah's stash of money, giving him 20000 dollars (After presumably splitting it with Charles and Sadie). This would be more than enough to leave the country (with Dutch possibly, after he redeems himself shooting Micah) Marston had no reason to try and hide in plain sight, other than the fact that the storyline was forced into lining up with RDR1. (That and the whole Abigail being tired of running thing.)
IMO Dutch shouldn't have made that final appearance, with some final showdown dialogue stating "Dutch went his own way" The chest full of money should have been a "Indiana Jones Last Crusade" moment, where the chest is lost in an avalanche or rockslide. This would explain why John doesn't show more emotion when confronting Dutch again in RDR1, and why he didn't leave the country.

    **SPOILERS FOR RDR2 AHEAD**
Even though Dutch was a bad guy, I never thought of him as a “bad guy” ya know? Like, yeah, he killed tons of people and betrayed many too but he just wanted to be free so badly that he thought that was the only way he could live his life as a free outlaw. The only reason he left John to die is because he didn’t want to be killed/captured, yeah it’s selfish but can you blame him (also going by what he said afterwards saying, “I didn’t have a choice”).
In RDR2, Arthur kept telling Dutch that outlaws were being taken down and America was being tamed but Dutch didn’t want to believe that he would have to leave this life that he has probably lived his whole life. I can’t really imagine Dutch settling down in a nice farmhouse with friends and family without cause crimes and murders. Also at the end of RDR2 no matter which ending you get, when Arthur is just about to die Dutch doesn’t kill him and join Micah (even though he joins later) he has sympathy towards Arthur, he never wanted him to die. Arthur was “like a son” as Dutch put it, so was John. And at the END of the game when Dutch shot Micah, that was him showing sympathy towards John as well.
The years passed and Dutch final came to his realization that Arthur was right, outlaws were dying and crimes were thinning rapidly. I believe that is why he ended his life, he couldn’t live without the rush of committing murders and robbing banks and trains. It was like, an addiction that was worsening by the year, driving him to want to kill old friends and gang members. One of the main things that I believe really damaged Dutch was when Hosea died, you could hear the grief in Dutch’s voice when Hosea was shot, Hosea was like Yang to the Yin and Yang. Without Hosea’s positive support for the camp and to keep Dutch’s bad tendencies to go out of whack, all went to shit.
*sorry for that long ass comment but thanks for reading. Plz don’t hate if I got anything wrong, I’m not really that in depth with the full stories yet.*

Thanks for the comment. It was a pleasure to read so dont apologize (make a bigger one lol). I think your view on Dutch is interesting and I agree with a lot you said actually. I hoped that Dutch would have saved Arthur though and he didn't. He actually left him to die twice. That troubles me so much (I fucking love Arthur!!!) because Arthur had served him blindly for so many years and Dutch discarded it while choosing to listen to Micah. I like to think that at Dutch's end he realised the mistake he made and regretted not saving Arthur, a thought that can be argued as he used the same line previously in RDR2 at Arthur's end (cant change etc).

Dutch is a bad guy from nature. He did so much bad things, what ever was is goal. Robbing bank and killing innocents people. For what ? A kind of "freedom" he wants. He wants an ideal, something utopian. And his interest always pass before everybody, and innocents people. That was a bad boy, what ever nice ideal he was thinking of and he was a leader . Compare to Marston, or Morgan, were just simple buddies. Influenced people. Not bad enough in nature to stay bad whole life. Trying to be influenced by civilization after their thought past and chilhood.

rdr2 was the perfect prequel. It makes rdr1 10x more impactful when your attached to the history dutch & John are speaking of. “Our time has passed John” hits me hard

Dutch is a really deep character, after all those replays and videos I still can´t say if he was always evil and twisted or if the circumstances and micah just put him over an edge he didn´t recover from. I guess it is the later since Arthur seems to have quite fond memories of him and Hosea when he was a child.
But on the other hand why would´nt a child idolize his "father", even when he´s as twisted as Dutch.

My impression is that Dutch was always egotistical and deluded, Hosea was what was holding him from going full egomaniac. Without a voice of reason, Micah just sped up the descent into full madness by being a sycophant bastard.

I love that the parts of Dutch's final speech before he jumps in RDR1 is in RDR2 when he and Arthur fall backwards into a river to avoid getting killed..

One of my favorite little details about Dutch's death scene is when John says "Then I have to shoot you," and then Dutch smirks and chuckles--since he knows John won't do it because John can't change who he really is either and thus isn't capable of killing Dutch.

The fact that Dutch is completely insane at this point and yet convinces a whole bunch of native americans to follow him in rebel against the white man despite being one himself
