  • Trælanipa is one of - if not the - most famous location in the Faroe Islands for photographers. In this video, I return to this epic location along with Nick Page and our workshop group. We get a few shots from a couple of vantage points, I show and tell what is new about this location and share some photography tips along the way. Be sure to watch my first video from the Faroes to find this location.

My favorite place on the planet. I was there in July for the first time. I was able to chat for a while at the "welcome" hut with one of the farmers who owns part of the land. It is nice of them that if the weather is crap when you go, like what happened with me, they let you go free of charge when you try a second time. I was fully prepared to pay again, so that was a nice little surprise. He was a dear. He showed me some photos of a different perspective of the lake/ocean, told me they are thinking of adding a guided hike to that location, and showed me the website his son is working on.
I was drinking a coffee at a cafe in Torshavn when I received your email announcement Mads, about the workshop next December with Nick. Needed all of 10 minutes to think about it and sign up. See you next winter. Can't wait to soak in the EPICNESS with you guys! Really looking forward to it!

The Faroes are down on my must visit's simply because the Cliffs of Moher are 20miles from my house. Yes there are a lot of selfie takers (2 deaths this year as a result) It is free to enter and hike after you pay for 'car' parking but it is not a condensed space, it can take over 8 km's to hike from one side to the other which certainly allows for plenty of private photo opportunities. You will have to visit sometime Mads..... The Burren, The Cliffs, The Abbey's, Bunratty Castle, Dromoland Castle, The narrow cobbled streets of Ennis, The Beaches and the beer! Co.Clare is a match for any Faroese Island!

Really although epic gets a bad rap sometimes there is no word that seems better. The similar word is whopping but just doesn’t have that classy sound! The origin of the word “whopping” is on my list!

I don't get why a word can have a bad rep. It's so weird. Call it what it is. The Faroes are epic ;)

Unfortunately, my experience is that people abuse their tourist status. It is bad enough in the cities like Venice that are now just Disney world with the trash, ignoring of laws, rudeness, etc. In natural places, plastic bags, cans, cigarette butts, etc. There are some natural places that have become some open trash pits. So, I’m more pessimistic. Were it my choice, the entry fees in the Faroes should have been $60 - $70. But it depends what the aim of the government was: build tourist facilities or discourage tourism.

Many of the roads there won't be able to handle a tourist rush, There are a lot of one lane roads and tunnels
and there are pull-offs every 100 meters or so. There were quite a few drivers that had no idea how to maneuver
on the roads causing chaos! Flights are very limited into the Faroe's, one way to control the boom. Mads, I hope you
don't object to my interaction with some of your subscribers.

Unfortunately, in the Faroes, the money goes only for the landowner. Not the government. And because of that you have a lot of mixed experiences in the Faroes... some places are tourist friendly. Some places are more like tourist robbers. Some places are simply "tourist are not welcome".
In this location, it is one of the few places where you actually see that your money is also used in order to improve the trails and maintain the place in a good shape...

In other trails, unfortunately I don't saw the same spirit. You pay a LOT for a "pseudo guide" that, supposedly, will guide everyone in order not to disrupt the wildlife much, etc, etc... Reality is, you don't have any kind of marked trails. I almost stepped over a birds nest (eggs)! The guide just says for you to climb a hill wherever you want... the group has everyone spreaded dirupting all the birds in the area (people asked the guide about a trail! And he simply says to go through wherever you want!!??!!??)... common... at least some painted wood sticks on the gound in order to mark one single trail, no!? They have that at the Mykines island and people stay close to the sticks so that the Puffins aren't afraid at all from human beings... At the end of the trail, the ""guide"" stays sitted somewhere without saying a word and then gets up and "lets get back"... you go again through the nesting area... the guide simply dissapears never to be seen again even when I got back to the parking lot. No control if everyone got back safe or if someone fall into the water... ridiculous...
This is not good for visitor, not good for reputation of the Faroes and most of all, not good for wildlife and for the place overall!! It is only good for the owner and some "guides" pockets... nothing else.
Some beautifull places are completely free. Some are paid when there is good weather (!!!!). If it is windy and rainning, maybe the landowner simply isn't there... at least I went to some places I expected to pay and I didn't see anywone around... lol
Don't get me wrong, I loved the Faroes! And already got a couple prints on my wall but they really need to find their way to explore their own potential...

Very true, it's a young country when it comes to tourism. They'll hopefully figure it out eventually but their concerns about the wildlife seem overly pretentious. Just an excuse to grab money. What hike were you on that delivered so poorly?

It was not in the Faroes but places in the USA. I have seen scattered trash at Zion, Yosemite, Smokies and a number of other parks. I refuse to travel anywhere that appears on social media because it soon becomes a disney destination. When I first visited Iceland in 1964 , it was pristine. Now one needs to avoid the masses. When I studied in Vienna in 1971, tourist season was June to September with a 1/3 of the number of tourists. Now it is all year long and the residents have lost control of the tourist area of the city. I will not even write about the mess in the center of Salzburg. Both cities pay a lot of money to keep those areas clean after tourist visits.

Mads Peter Iversen it was Dragarnir hike. I arrived at the Faroes I think in the day you recorded this video (was this recorded during the first workshop with Nick Page? I arrived there by the time you were finishing this hike.
I went to Dragarnir next day I think. It was not the same guide you and Nick had and that I see appearing in other TH-cam channels whenever workshops go there. It was a younger person. So, maybe your experience is completely different then mine there.
Edit: And many thanks for all the work you’ve made to help people visiting the Faroes! Your map and videos helped so much to make the most of the time I was there!

Mads Peter Iversen Just hope the area does not get overwhelmed with tourists as so many other locations have as a result of so much publicity and exposure (no pun intended). Just ask Nick why his Instagram posts all show Mesa Arch for their location. Me thinks he is onto something. By the way your vlog and images are superb.
