How Good is Public Transport in The Faroe Islands? I'll try as many modes as I can in a Single Day.

- I arrived in The Faroe Islands with no intention of hiring a car or taking an official tour, but would this really be possible? Join me in Tórshavn as I set out on a day of adventure. The challenge will be to try as many different modes of transport as I can so if you fancy seeing how I got on and what sights I saw along the way, let's get on the road!
Filmed in The Faroe Islands on Tuesday 13th June 2023.

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.
FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION?
This can be difficult to pinpoint as I get most pleasure from visiting new places (and often that will be somewhere I've never even heard of). But to try and categorise it, I'd say take me to a small, cold island somewhere the beer is not too expensive and I'll be happy. Any suggestions?
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I love your videos of the Faroe Islands.
I'm a Norwegian, and used to live in the Faroe Islands for 27 years. I was a part of the public transport Bygdaleiðir for a while, and later on driving tourist buses, and being educated as a certified guide for the Faroe Islands. In 2006, I believe, when Scotland played a game against the Faroe Islands, I was driving "The West of Scotland Tartan Army", a fun experience. I even got an official Scotland cap that I use up til today, although it's a bit faded in colour.
Your videos are different and honest compared to many others out there. I'm looking forward to your Klaksvík trip next week.
I'm also looking forward to my own trip to the Faroe Islands in two weeks time, staying there for three full weeks, and I might even get involved in tourism while being there.
I will also check out your other videos, especially of Scotland including the islands up north. I have traveled countless times in Scotland, both as a holiday destination, but also as a bus driver. InShetland I drove bus on the left side for the first time, and later on driving from Scrabster to Edinburgh with 7th grade school children.
Once again, thanks for these videos and for sharing them with us.
Superb, thanks so much for sharing this comment it was a great read! I found the drivers in The Faroe Islands to be so skilled and friendly, I almost got to know some of them even after a short visit. It’s such a magical, mysterious place and I’m so glad you’ve got a trip back there to look forward to soon! Thanks for checking out my videos, and yes, next weeks’ was my favourite, I’m sure you’ll guess which island I’m heading to from Klaksvík ;)
@@steve-marsh I guess Viðoy and Viðareiði, or maybe Kalsoy, the James Bond "resting place"
Fascinating stories! Norway 🇳🇴 is one of my favourite country with Iceland 🇮🇸 I hope to visit Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 soon it looks magical !
Sabrina🇫🇷🇬🇧
Really enjoyed the video, Steve - good to see how you get on - will be watching the next episode.
What made you move back home?
Your pronunciation of local names is actually quite good. Any Faroese speaker would understand it. 😊
Thanks! To be understood is always good enough for me :)
True Scotsman ❤
I thoroughly enjoyed this. What a beautiful scenery. Also the way you present your videos is really enjoyable and engaging. Thank you for doing this.
How I wish I could speak Faroese, I think that it is a very fine language 😊
I've watched all the great TH-cam Travel Vloggers - Bald and bankrupt, Harald Baldr, Gabriel Traveller, but you are up there with them Steve. You have a very engaging and natural presentation style.
What a gorgeous place. The Faroes had just been a distant name for me but what a lovely place to live, especially with their public transport system. Thanks for doing the work for we armchair travellers.
Yeah, for such a small island network, they really do well getting you around! :)
Unfortunately, cost of living isnt matched to the salary of the average worker
This just makes you realise how far rural parts of Scotland have been left behind infrastructure wise.
Its nit Scotland unfortunately Denmark took over the island in the world war 😢
An hour of sleep and still cranks out a top-notch wee tour of the Faroes. That's commitment.
I was 100% on autopilot! Thanks :)
If you ever find yourself there again, there is a boat-tour from Westmanna, that takes you out along the cliffs to see the birds, and caves. Gorgeous tour beyond reason.
Oh I did it in 2015, spectacular, loved the elephant rock!
@@steve-marsh YES! Looks amazing, and I love how amazing the captains/helmsmen are at meneuvereing through the caves!
I'm a fellow Scot (living in France). I don't know when (if ever) I'll get to the Faroes but this was a fascinating video. Well done sir.
Not now (i want to see next week’s) but maybe sometime you could make a video about your production processes, what platform you edit on, how many sd cards, how you manage all the camera bits and bobs while away and so on. I really enjoy your videos. Many of the places Ive been to or they are on my bucket list which I wont complete (im getting older). For me your videos are down to earth, honest, not pretentious at all and fun - they are a great way to see some place I cant visit. Thank you.
I like Joseph's suggestion. It would be a video that I would be very pleased to watch.
Thanks so much! Hey cracking idea, I'll have a wee think about how I could do that!
I was really looking forward to this one and it did not disappoint! You did a grand job despite the total lack of sleep. Everywhere you look, the views are drop dead majestic. I've quite fallen in love with this place, and now, knowing there's another installment coming makes me super happy. So worth the time and effort and so lucky with the weather too!
Thanks so much! Oh I wish the concluding part was ready to go now, it gets even more spectacular! :)
I don't know whether to be more amazed by how beautiful it is, or by how such a small & remote place manages to be so developed.
Imagine before all the modern infrastructure, those little places would have been totally isolated apart from the odd boat :)
One unique feature of the Faroes is the tunnel beneath the Atlantic which also incorporates a roundabout! Absolutely wonderful video Steve. Can’t wait for the next one.
Aye I tried to do it for this video but would you believe the bus routed another way and bypassed it completely! Will I ever experience the jellyfish roundabout?! :(
The only 'downside' for going round the "Jellyfish Roundabout" is that driving through the 'Eysturoyartunnil' the toll cost (for visitors/car rentals), without an annual pass... is 175 Dkk (approx. 24 Euros) each way.🤔 Bearing in mind that is just one tunnel, it get very expensive, very quickly, driving around the Faroes. Just saying!
Two down one to go....what a superb video of a place most people are totally unfamiliar with, in fact I bet that there's very few that could even find the Faroes on a map Steve. And you were extremely lucky with the weather I bet that there are days when you wouldn't be able to se a thing beyond a few hundred yards. What a place for a traveller such as yourself, loaded with sights that are a vloggers dream, really looking forward to part three mate.....super!!
The weather was the most unexpected part, it was just incredible, and not just the blue skies but the lack of wind, up there in the North Atlantic! Excited to share part 3, cheers for coming along on the adventure!
I'm in England, 65 and when doing geography at school struggled to remember the islands to the North of Scotland. So I made the mnemonic 'FISO' to recall the three island groups (in order N to S - towards Scottish mainland). Easy Peasy, it stands for "Faroe Islands, Shetlands & Orkneys".
Another cracker. Great editing 👍
Hey thanks so much! The clips were a bit all over the place with my lack of sleep, so it was a challenge to piece together :D
Stunning scenery. I love places like this, and Iceland, Norway, the Scottish Highlands etc. Absolute paradise. Need to tick the Faroes off my list one day. Thank you for these videos!
Cheers Ben! There really is something special about this part of the world eh!?
My son is a teenager and refused to travel with mom and younger brother, but couple weeks ago he showed me pictures of Faroe Islands and asked if we could go there for summer road trip. Now I’m looking for informations and planing out trip. It’s far from HongKong, i’m glad I found your video!
Yet another Saturday morning living vicariously through Steve, fave part of my week!
Aww thanks so much! Enjoy the rest of the weekend :)
Thanks for taking me travelling with you..I am currently stuck in a hospital bed in Melbourne Australia well and truly on the mend but in need of something interesting to watch. Looking forward to the next episode
So glad to hear you are on the mend, let the recovery continue quickly!
Absolutely beautiful islands ..great editing. Thank you Steve
Oh I appreciate that! It was a tough edit with tiredness affecting a lot of my video clips :D
@@steve-marsh but you always manage to pull it all together for us to enjoy👍
I probably could have been first commenter, but once I clicked on the video, I was mesmerized! What a gorgeous place! Those sea stacks on the first ferry ride were stunning. I am so excited for the next installment. The Faroes are definitely on my list of places I want to visit. Cheers and ATB
Magical and mysterious, yes, next week I'm off to my favourite island, I wish I had it ready just to share right now! Thanks Erin :)
Wow what an absolutely gorgeous place! Fab video as always - the first ferry ride was especially breathtaking. On my list of places to visit now! 🇫🇴
That ferry trip is just so iconic, albeit very tricky to film at that speed :D The scenery will just get better next week :)
A great video in keeping with your high standards, sorry to hear about the accommodation but at least you got some satisfaction in the end. Must say these islands look stunning would like to go there myself one day, till next time stay safe and well and cheers.
Cheers Simon! Aye, I was worried I'd be stuck with that room for the duration and when I was out and about without wifi there was no real way to hear if it had been resolved, but they came through in the end with a cracking place eh!
Departing from the idea of public transportation @10:15 is the ultimate American-made personal luxury car, the Lincoln Mark IV/V. Not quite a Maserati or a Rolls, but still a fantastic vehicle for its time. I wish I had one.
Visited this magical, mystical place some years ago. Your videos are bringing me back.
Stunning! Added to bucket list along with the Lofoten Islands in Norway.
Oh Lofoten is high high on my list too, even though I still struggle to spell it...
@@steve-marsh maybe see you there🙂
Great video Steve , i was absolutely blown away with how beautifully green it was . I didn't realise how developed it was , the town was gorgeous as were the islands . This was a real eye opener 🇬🇧
Honestly, the vivid greens were like no other shade I've ever seen, it was like I had a filter on my camera the whole time!
Good stuff 👍 That stinking apartment was a disgrace but you got a result.
Yes, you'ld think that the weather couldn't change much faster than in Scotland.
But when I was in the Faeroes, I could see it raining cats and dogs on a neighbouring island, while I was in full sunshine on our island.
Even though I've been to the Faroe Islands myself I still can't believe that place is for real. The landscapes are unbelievable.
Another great adventure there Steve.
What an amazing place, its stunning.
You certainly got a great upgrade on the accommodation and quite rightly too.
Look forward to seeing your next video there.
I was scared I'd be stuck in the first room for the whole trip, but they really did come through with the goods eh!
Wow, the islands are even more stunning than I ever imagined! Even the houses look cosy and inviting. Definitely bumping the Faroes up my bucket list. I just hope that when my camera and I do get to visit, we'll be as lucky with the weather as you seem to have been!
It's great to know that it's relatively easy to get around by public transport, too. I would imagine that a hire car doesn't come cheap! Having been to Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland a number of times, I know that nothing comes cheap in that part of the world! Still, I don't mind living on hotdogs and Haribo for a few days. 😁
Thanks for the great video, mate. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Cheers Andy! When I was last there the weather was pretty bad, but to be honest it also added a mysterious feel to the place that would work well for your camera :) Aye, driving is not something I'd do there without a LOT of research. The roads are great, but there are many things to consider, tunnel tolls etc, and I'm sure I'd get confused at some point! The bus drivers were great, giving tips etc as well, so they definitely enhanced the experience!
The Færøerne are still on my bucket list and after seeing your video I definitely want to go. Oh... I really need to visit Scotland soon.
Scotland is waiting for you :)
Unlikely that I'll get there myself so thank you for the tour! Spectacular place.
You are so welcome! Thanks for joining me!
Looks amazing. A place on my list, but would need to go in settled summer weather. Glad you got your accommodation changed.
Oh that was a tough day on zero sleep! But I can't be too critical of them after the way they dealt with the problem!
@@steve-marsh it's hard isn't it? We recently had to change a flight due to French strikes and ended up doing a whole day on a couple of hours sleep 😴
Stunningly beautiful, and fish & chips...........what else could you ask for?
Oh that fish was as fresh as I've ever tasted :)
Hi Steve thanks what a beautiful surprise seeing the Faroes
Glad you enjoyed it Davey!
Sorry to hear about your hotel woes, but brand names maybe boring but at least they are consistent and reliable and usually close to stations. What a beautiful place the faroes is, you certainly need a week to give it justice, and not just a football stadium. Best view was 3:55, love ferries especially when you can just walk on and tap a card. Thanks Steve
That's a really good point about the hotel brands, unfortunately in my travels I never know what I'm walking into :D Yeah, a week is a good time (after which most people will run out of money!) Next week though, in my opinion, will give the best views...:)
Steve, that was more than a "mildly acceptable" video - it was fantastic! The Faroe Islands are fascinating with truly incredible scenery. I was also blown away by the luxury public transport and wonder how they manage to afford such a great public transport system and roads and tunnel infrastructure with such a small population? Also, do you know why they have grassed roofs on the buildings?
I wonder exactly the same thing, they are not even part of the EU, so that's another funding option closed to them! I was imagining Alicja telling me to go out and cut the grass :D I guess it's good for insulation? I've seen photos of sheep on the roof before, but didn't see it on my trip! Thanks so much for the kind words by the way!
@@steve-marsh Today it only for the tradition, but for most of the Faroes history, there has only been stones, driftwood (Notice there are no wild trees in the Faroe islands), and grass to build with. Only the ultra rich could afford importing wood.
Side note which i find interesting, In the olden times, there have been many buildings that have been "torn" carefully down, and rebuilt in an other village because wood was so scarce. Even one or two churches.
How? The same way Greenland does: Money from Copenhagen.
One factor is that Denmark subsidizes them with 75 million pounds a year. Another factor is that Faroese people are generally very entrepreneurial and innovative when it comes to making the most of the conditions given.
@erik_griswold The 75m pounds is 3.25% of the Faroes gtp vs 460m pounds that Greenland gets, which is around 20% of Greenlands gtp. Denmark is not paying for road infrastructure, at least a small % of the 3.25% goes to it, as there are ares that are fully Danish controlled, such as the police, judicial system, etc. These the bloktilskud (grant) pays fully.
Fantastic video, thanks Steve! Up to now, I have only seen a lot of aerial photos of The Faroes. Your video made everything real. What a spectacular place! I hope one day I can visit. 😍
Yeah, I noticed that in research - I guess it's set up perfectly for drones, but it's nice to get down on the ground and have a proper look round eh? :)
@@steve-marsh Much, much better!
I just love your videos, so much humanity in them; thank you for the pleasure it give me. One request, would you consider putting in a wee clip of a map every now and then to show where you are? It would save me clicking out of the videos to go to Google Maps! Thanks anyhow. David.
Thanks Steve! Another cracking video 🙂
Cheers Duncan! Much appreciated!
You packed plenty in on virtually no sleep. It goes without saying that the Faroe's are absolutely stunning, and how lucky you had sunshine. For a quiet life I reckon this would be hard to beat, although I bet the weather can get pretty harsh, and the winters severe. Stunning.
Yeah, I imagine those winters will go on forever! I'm not surprised they keep a flight link open with Spain to get some sunshine!
Loved the ferry rides. Such majestic scenery. I am awed. Love the rooftops! Your upgrade was lovely. Great bus rides.
I must admit falling into my new bed was up there with highlights of the day! :D
Worthy of another Oscar Steve. Thanks.
Haha cheers! :D
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this! I found your channel quite by accident and am so glad I did. Beautiful and high quality work by you, and such a fascinating place! I look forward to more. Thank you so much!
Spectacular footage Steve what you did manage to get, like you say that boat trip was beyond words I really enjoyed the whole experience, shame about the bus not waiting, one thing about you Steve you worry a lot but you are never defeated by any amount of challenges thrown at you, an admirable quality indeed, your hot dog 🌭 didn’t get me rushing to the food cupboard today 😅 good thing I’d already had my breakfast! football stadium not my thing since getting on the wrong side of a match at Wembley, England v Scotland my husband said we’ll be ok. as long has we don’t speak, difficult when surrounded by hundreds of hunky Scotsmen offering us copious amounts of whisky strait from the bottle 😂instead of saying no thank you we just smiled politely and hoped for the best, especially if I remember England 🏴 won 🥇 not sure how my husband resisted that challenge as we had visited every whisky distillery in Scotland 🏴 👍🤪
Haha I must say though, the travelling Scotland football support (The Tartan Army) are one of our best exports, they pride themselves in representing their country well. But I can imagine it would be an experience! :D I dare to imagine how much they would have spent in Tórshavn where the alcohol is not the cheapest! It was a fun day, but I must admit I was a bit jaded throughout due to the lack of sleep. The concluding part was my favourite though, and I had a good 6 hours sleep for that, so I was a little more on my game :D
Thanks for sharing your trip. I'm impressed with the scenery and the weather (not to mention your fortitude with so little sleep).
Thanks so much, I was pretty much on autopilot all day! :D
Stunning.
Lovely!!
Those rock formations and stacks are just amazing. Such good quality roads too. Will look into getting up there. Great stuff Steve.
Aye they really have some incredible infrastructure and the landscapes are genuinely breathtaking! I really did land some favourable weather though, even in summer this is rare, so I was happy to capture loads of it on camera
What an amazing trip Steve! Sorry for your rough night, I’m glad the hotel gave you the upgrade to such a beautiful suite. Friends from ours from Colorado USA are visiting the Faros right now as well - great minds think alike! Enjoy the rest of your trip and thanks for the wonderful video.
Ahh superb, I hope they're enjoying it as much as I did! Yeah, I was happy to collapse into my bed after this day, and this trip concludes with my favourite day next week :)
I must take my family there. Gorgeous!
Beautiful country! Would love if you added a map to see what parts of the islands you are on.
How convenient and kind of you to post part two 15 minutes after i saw the first part. Gives me an excuse not to do anything useful.
Haha the concluding part won't be ready quite as quickly :D
Brilliant Steve, have really been enjoying your content since discovering your channel, a breath of fresh air and an inspiration to travel.👍🏻
What an absolutely stunning landscape, and what a fun way to get around! Gotta love a good public transit network!
Hi:) I’m trove the Faroes and realy enjo your content but I just got a comment regarding your comment about the free busses in Tórshavn and Klaksvik, they were Not intended to be free fore tourist only the locals , we sure have the highest Tax rates in the world and that was intended as a service not fore tourist, the same goes fore the ferry’s and Helicopters they are cheap to use cus of the tax payers
Another great video! Thanks Steve
Stunning! Thank you.
My pleasure Janet!
What a lovely place and a good video.

An absolute pleasure to share my experience on these magical islands. Next week is even more scenic!
Steve m8, it's got it all hasn't it? I'll be using this vlog to show the wife why we will be holidaying here next year and not in Germany. She likes the sea and I like the mountains, think we are sorted here.
I can see the weather is definitely a thing here though. It could make or break it but you with your deal with the devil you are getting the weather we all want.
Really excellent m8, looking forward to next week.
Thanks a lot mate! Aye, the weather is the stickler here - I've watched a fair few videos from here and not many feature blue skies and calm winds! Oh next week is my favourite, I much admit!
Definitely go to the Faroes, but if the combination of ocean and mountains is the criterion then most of the coast of Norway will also fit the bill.
You sure picked the right days to visit my Føroyar.
A day either way and the weather could have been MUCH different hehe :)
Fascinating as usual, Steve! That was some great footage from the ferry to Mykines, mind you. Keeping your horizons steady and level must have been quite a feat in that swell! And those wee islands with those cliffs - wow. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks, as ever!
It sure was a challenge! :D The scenery in the next one is even better!
You have done it again Steve !!! :):):)
Absolutely beautiful place to visit. Thanks for taking us along
Glad you enjoyed it Glenys!
OK, wow, what a magical place. And those rock formations on that first sailing are insane! I want to do it on a clear day like you had! Many thanks as always! 😎
For me those sea stacks are the iconic Faroese view, absolutely love them!
