    After replaying the Uncharted games, I find Naughty Dog games a little more difficult to go back to and play a second time. The first time I played them, I was pretty darn blown away. But a second playthrough is pretty different beast. I think this is because they are pretty damn slow games and have a lot of story/exposition/cutscenes. The first time you play, it's pretty exciting, but that's precisely why it's harder the next time. This goes for lots of different games, not just Uncharted. I'm sure if I went back to TLOU (which is my favorite game of all time) I might find the experience a lot less enjoyable, which is why I never go back to it (don't want to tarnish that feel good memory, ya know?).
    So, though this video may seem pretty critical (and it is - that's the point) I think some of it could be attributed to this feeling. Maybe not with my section on combat, but during my thoughts on the traversal and pacing.
    Just wanted to point that out for those who think that I now hate this game. I don't. I just think it doesn't play as well a second time through.

      I played Uncharted a bit back when it was released and didn't enjoy it. I was still a teenager and loved high octane PC shooters and CS, so it wasn't really my style at the time.
      I got the remastered collection for PS4 in the begging of last year, having just played TLOU for the first time and then a second time right after. I had just finished the first Game as my country went in to lockdown and I was without work for a couple of months. So I continued playing through the remastered collection one after the other and got through them in only weeks. I got 4 and the spinoff and played through them both, then 4 again.
      I really agree with there being parts of the game you'll be rushing through to get to the good stuff, but for me that wasn't the gun fights. I loved sliding around Scotland, that part where you drive around with Sam and sully, figuring out the puzzles in Madagascar, The pirate islands before Libertaria and espescially Libertaria and the jungles. I found the gun fights satisfying, unlike especially 1 and 2, and they were great for pacing. But those slow moments. Like when your driving with Elena up to the mansions, when Sam and Nathan are going through the pirate trails, the climbing in the rain and that last part in the caverns. Those were the ones I was returning for. I really think that what you'll returning for will be different from person to person . In the end I think no matter what part your most into, they're all great.

      I think naughty dog games are the closest thing to interactive movies. The story quality is often as good if not better than most movies and the gameplay is fun and smooth. Although they have yet to recreate the feeling of watching a classic movie that is enjoyed with every viewing. Video games, especially modern ones, take substantial mental effort to enter into and complete a story.

    My favorite scene in the game is when Nate and Elena are at the table and Nate is recounting the history that must have been. "These are - some of history's greatest pirates. Uncharted 4 has the best climbing to date of any game period. It sounds like most of your negative impressions are around the climbing early calling it boring. But those parts are some of the best parts of the game. running around climbing as kid drake is a total blast. Since it's the beginning of the game the polish of the climbing mechanics are still really fresh and can easily carry the fun factor of the game on it's own.

    • @HighMisticFive
      @HighMisticFive 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Best climbing to date of any game period? Zelda: BotW have a better climbing with more dinamism.

    • @mattecrystal6403
      @mattecrystal6403 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@HighMisticFive Zeldas climbing is fun but it quite literally is just the same lame animation going up a mountain. It doesn't change at all.
      Uncharted you are constantly climbing in realistic feasible ways (minus the fact that it's still a game and being able to climb as many structures as drake does at the speed drake does would ultimately result in death)
      Your constantly looking for handholds in different locations and for totally unique objects throughout the entire game. Many of which require you to jump to or grab hold of in different ways Plus the number of different ways to jump to the same handhold keeps things interesting. The shear number of climbing animations in the game is staggering.
      The main difference you can argue that makes zelda better is the stamina factor but that is far more dependent on the type of game. uncharted is a linear story driven game. Zelda is a open world go anywhere type game.
      I think a better way of looking at it is imagine playing Zelda and having that stamina bar but also having the actual climbing mechanics of uncharted 4. All the physics based animations, multiple ways to jump to the same areas and, unique crevasses and holds (you can't just climb up any flat rock) Plus the physics based rope and knife. That would be a killer game because the climbing is so well polished.
      But now take that example and consider what parts were taken from which game. Basically everything but the stamina bar comes from uncharted. Hence yes the stamina bar adds a lot of fun factor but when it comes to climbing uncharted has it beat big time.
      The stamina bar is just a supplemental thing, it itself is not signifier of how well done the climbing is.
      Also by your logic if zelda was the gold standard than shadow of the colossus would actually be the winner because it's basically zeldas climbing system done better because you can climb all directions and it's physics based.

    I'm gonna have to disagree with you with you there. The way I see it, the game purposefully has 2 slow paced climbing sections at the beginning because they want us to get used to the new Nathan we're introduced to. An older, more relaxed Nathan who is living a slower paced life.
    The beginning is slower, but then picks up the pace intentionally, conceptualizing Nathan picking up the pace and getting back to the life he left behind.
    I do agree with you that the platforming probably could have been handled better, plus Nadine's character kind of sucked and was unnecessary.

    • @eziospaghettiauditore8369

      @rh_BOSS ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to disagree with you. You play through the first climbing tutorial as kid Nate, then play through the second one as young Nate. Essentially, in the first 2-3 hours of the game the narrative jumps all over the place both in time and location, yet the gameplay stays the same, which really makes no sense thematically. That is just some shitty gameplay pacing from ND, which is the biggest issue with this game.

      And to add to that i'd say Uncharted 3 has the most raw essence of the franchise since it features the best and most jaw dropping setpieces which is what the games are all about.
      Uncharted 1 on the other hand while still good feels pretty dated and pales in comparison to all three sequels and The Lost Legacy (i don't know how it stacks up to Golden Abyss i haven't played it).

    • @grantmalone

      Yeah, when Uncharted 2 came out it was fresh, the big set pieces made your jaw drop, the climbing with the breaking ledges had you on the edge of your seat. Two games later and Uncharted 4 was doing the same old stuff with a shiny coat of paint. It looked brand new and felt a decade old. Lots of reviews said so. Uncharted 2 is easily the most revered in the series.

UC4 turned out to be my favorite game of all time, and I quickly bought as many PS4-exclusive games as I could (including Horizon, The Last of Us, LBP3, Dreams, Ratchet and Clank, etc, UC:LL). Literally every game I played from Sony Interactive, Naughty Dog, and Media Molecule were masterpieces. Man I'm so relieved that its not just me who thought the platforming is over tuned, boring and shallow. Played all the series in 2020 for the first time and they are a mixed bag for me: characters, their interactions and the scenery , world bilging is all awesome, than comes the absolute zero realism writing and the platforming and I want to throw out the ps4 in the window. Best for me was Lost legacy, which has proportionally less platforming, more funny character interactions between the two polar opposite personality of the protagonists, all was very good.

It’s story is amazing but how the whole narrative is conveyed is what made me like it. Always felt like a fun action movie. The amazing cast of characters and antagonists were always there and never disappointed. I enjoyed the puzzle for the games in 1/2 but 3/4 I wasn’t feeling it. The parkour was amazing in every standard in my opinion. Uncharted 4 had my favorite gameplay it was very smooth and u can see how the time differences rly improved the game. I've played Among Thieves probably more times than I remember. Played it as a child, played it as a teenager, played it as an adult. I've also played it 2 more times to achieve Platinum. Same goes for Drake's Fortune and Drake's Deception. All great games (especially Among Thieves, which has a unique place in my heart as the first true story-based game I ever played).
    They all were and are great games but, for me, what makes A Thief's End the best of them all, is what it achieved. Not what it achieved from a mechanics or a graphics point of view (which in of themselves are pretty remarkable for the PS4 and for 2016), but for what it achieved as an ending to such a beloved franchise.
    So many times studios invent beloved franchises yet they fail to understand how to end them, when to end them or they simply never want to and they choose to keep exploiting their name for profit (*cough*Assassin'sCreed*cough*). Other times, studios end their franchise at the correct time but the hype that the title has amassed builds a promise that they can't fulfill.
    So, for me, what Naughty Dog achieved with A Thief's End, what they proved, is that even if a game has massive anticipation around it, even if the franchise behind it has so many great titles, even if you deliver a story that most fans weren't exactly expecting,
    you still CAN make a game that the fans will love. You still can achieve your goals. It's easy for studios nowadays to cover their failures with the blanket called "too much hype" , "overbearing anticipation". Now we know you can succeed even with all that in mind.
    Naughty Dog's proved it.
    Great video man..

    My GF used to HATE video games, but when Uncharted 4 first came out she kept asking me questions about it when she'd catch a few good story moments during my play. She made me restart the game so she could follow the story and watch me play, eventually taking the controller to explore and climb only giving it back when there was a gun fight. She loved it! I then asked if she wanted to play TLOU Remastered and she enjoyed that too, then she proceeded to play the Uncharted Collection solo, then heavy rain, Detroit become human, until dawn, she even platted lego batman 3! Currently playing through beyond two souls and the dark pictures anthology. She tried COD and went 1-28 but I'm glad she enjoys the story type games, you just gotta find your style of gaming! :)

      Honestly I kinda disagree. Uncharted is good, but the climbing gets super tedious. At least it did to me. Maybe it’s because I played through all 4 of them in a short time span. But it just feels like so much of the game is padded out with climbing

    The graphic is awesome but you know what is awesome? two brother's relationship, their journey across the world, and even the criminal world have it owns charm in uncharted, Uncharted teach me that freedom is worth risking. After all, the idea of freedom itself sounds fun and makes you feel alive, especially when you discover something new along your journey. Uncharted 4 is not an open-world game but it gives me a sense of freedom that no game can compete.

    21:29 noticed it to? Yeah I felt the same way with the first last of us since Niel (Pre Tlou2) had a stop and go and repeat type of story telling. The game would start with this action set piece before slowing down the pacing to drop exposition on you. The story was great but the pacing just felt off for me.

I just binged played all the uncharted games in the past week for the first and I was low key disappointed by how tame U4 was, especially coming off the heels of 2 and 3. U4 definitely needed WAY moments like the Madagascar chase scenes. Not to mention Rafe was kinda wuss compared to lazarevic and Talbet from 2 and 3, thoese guys always felt like a constant looming treat, Reaf didn't like that much of a treat in comparison.

      @Alâ of course the Level design, graphics, gameplay the whole nine yards is better it’s on a much superior console to the ps3. While the game is very gorgeous it just doesn’t have that sense of Aw and wonder the past 3 had. My biggest problem which is more of a my own opinion type of thing but I always enjoyed the 3 boss bad guys the past 3 games had and was disappointed that this one only had one though I did enjoy the boss fight a lot. I was also really dissatisfied with it not being a bit more magical. Uncharted has always had some form of mystical unnatural aspect and the 4 game didn’t have that. More of a grounded realistic approach which strangely took me out of the game. I guess my thing was I was so use to the same formula the past 3 games had and enjoyed them so much that a change wasn’t welcome this late in the series. Undoubtedly the physics and graphics are superior and make this game a joy to play but I think the past 3 had superior stories than this one did.

      @@Who-Uhm-Cares I've tried numerous times to replay TLOU 1, a game I love, but I've never actually managed to finish any subsequent play-through, because I sort of just lose interest along the way, even on the highest difficulties. The story is such a critical part of the experience, but it's potency diminishes greatly after that first experience. The gameplay really isn't anything to write home about.
