      Yes once your metal work gets better you'll be using less body filler or sometimes it's better to just replace the whole metal either find it out of the wrecking yard that is close enough or make a pieces from raw sheet metal.
      When I first started doing body work right out of high school in 1987 I was using a whole lotta body filler. Intel I learned what other shop's were doing. Replacing metal. These day's they don't even do body work they replace parts or call it a total have the insurance pay out.
      I bought a few classic with total paper work on them because shop's don't do work on car's that are 20 year's older.

      @@jsh3234 Do you have any video's of your metal finishing work? Just curious. Because after all the welding and grinding sanding seems like trying to work the metal using no bondo/body filler will take up a whole lot of time when a person has a lot of other thing's to the car/truck safe to drive on the road there's a whole list.
      Spend all that time on metal work when some one could just side swip all the work that has been done. I can see if someone was going to show it bare metal then yeah I can see spending many many hour's on metal finishing work and using lead filler what most metal finisher use is lead.

    Awesome video. So much learning going on here. Winter has arrived in northern Indiana too. I stocked up on dog treats and baking supplies so it's hibernation time for me. The heat in the shop runs a lot but the dehumidifier stopped running. I had to edit this because half my post is gone. I appreciate that you explain the concept as well as the process. I can't wait until you do the escape hatch on the roof so I know how to do that. Mary is amazed and jealous of Poe's editing abilities. Well done. • @lalul11164
      @lalul11164 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      With this type of meticulous metal work, very little fillers of any kind will be needed, all adding up, in my opinion, to something that will tend to be much more reliable and durable. I'm not a body person though have done prep work back in the day for painters in big shops, but I imagine that with some of the various types high-build epoxy primers and the like that exist today, that would take care of much of the minor imperfections that might need attention on a work like this.

    Take the high road; the reason you are doing it this way, in chunks, is because you are able to re-use original metal from the original truck as much as possible. Anyone can slap together new sheet steel and make something fancy. Takes more hand-tool use to get the original metal to move where you want it or maintain some of that original fabrication. An homage to the original builders.

    My Dad used this "file" a lot. But with the extremely thin junk of tin that is as heavy duty as cooking foil they use on cars of today you must be extremely careful not to remove any material at all.
    My Dad always used this file also after leading. He was very good and efficient making the leaded parts perfectly shaped. The way you smoothed out the welded parts was acutally kind of perfect. This brought back memories of a teacher in metal work courses that tortured us for days making things perfect. I still have those parts we built in my cellar. Spheres and all kind of weird things with very extreme curves that we were bashing endlessly and then smoothing the entire nonsense til overkill. I even hate looking at those pieces of torture but with the hundreds of hours spent making them I did not have the heart to dump them in a bin. But I think I will throw them soon.

    Great video! I really enjoyed your use of the same techniques employed by the original customers, such as Geroge Barris. The roof, literally, is coming together and the chicken truck looks promising. Thank you.

    Personally I think there is something to be said for customizing and putting pieces of the truck back into itself. Most of us don’t have enough knowledge or equipment to scratch build a complex panel.

    Man you're just pissing me off, I am getting tired of getting my ass kicked on my cab. You make this look to eazy, you are truly an artist.

    You see, Blondie, there are two kinds of people in this world; those who say they can metal finish when they can't, and those who say they can't while they do it beautifully.

    Did the Chicken Truck get its name because everyone else was too "chicken" to take on such a project? If so, then all of your projects could be labelled as "chicken". You've proven over and over that no matter what condition those vehicles are in, you can whip them back into shape with a fair amount of grunt work. I know your videos will inspire more people to rescue these gems from the crusher. I wish my Ram wasn't made of recycled paper because I would use the tips I've learned from watching your videos to tackle the holes of hopelessness that have presented themselves over the past few years.

    Convoluted nightmare. Those would be my projects. Sounds like the title to a biography. Especially mine! That could also be a great band name. You are a master, sir. Your videos will be referenced for years to come. Cheers!

      Convoluted nightmare was the name of my band in high school. I played lead triangle. Feel free to steal the name for your biography, though!
