Sectioning The Hood on a Classic Truck. Amazing Transformation! 1953 Chevy Radical Custom Bodywork

  • This is part 1 of sectioning the hood on our tasty Chicken Truck, the radical kustom 1953 Chevy pickup. Thanks to old collision damage and bad decisions, the project becomes much more complicated than anticipated and I end up having to splice two hoods together. Also, several critical mistakes are made.

I was restoring an old church entrance from the 1820s which had some very ornate moulding and mortis and tenon work throughout. The job required full disassembly of the parts with fabrication and replacement of the rotted pieces, etc. Upon fully stripping the centuries of paint, we could see where the original craftsmen had made mistakes here or there. This was. an epiphany for me as a woodworker, because it showed me that everyone makes mistakes, but the masters are able to parry and make adjustments to the piece so no one would ever realize the shortcomings. The masters were prone to mismeasurements or making a wrong cut, but they knew how to cover it up like a magician. As my father said to us, "people that don't make mistakes don't work." ... He also said the reason I had blisters on my hands was because I don't work, too.... yeah. He was tough!

Great show!! Take some advice/comments from an old engineer - if we kept doing things like we have always done them where would we be bows/arrows and spears with stone tips and animal skins for attire, etc. Edison tried something like 10,000 different ways to make a light bulb. He never considered any of them as a failure but as a learning experience - he found 10,000 ways that didn't work so that the 10,001st way would work. Some of my best successes came from the lessons I learned from trying something different failing or at least not succeeding and then improving from there. The thing I hated hearing was "We've never done it that way" or "We have always done it this way". Give the nay sayers the good old middle finger you're number one salute and keep on keeping on. Your ingenuity/creativity, eye for detail and seeing the evolution of your ideas makes the shows all the more worthwhile in my opinion. Also appreciate the dry self deprecating humour.

Kyle has an exceptionally good eye for compound curves. After considering the option of adding material to the rear and/or middle, he was able to conceive and visualize how to stretch the top part onto the bottom part so the graft was 'seamless.' Super cool. Even Covell didn't do it this well. Kyle has enviable visualization skillz. I have none.

I’m loving this build. I can’t wait to see what grille you opt for. No hurry. No worries. I watched a guy working for three years on a Fury splice with lots of agents pitching in. 😂 (I’ve always loved those Pontiac waterfalls).

Pshaw...the harpsichord entirely lacks sustain. Only a hack like Mozart could make it work.

Because my last comment sent the earth spinning off its axis, I will not make any attempt at comedy of any kind. In accordance with modern society, I will only say.... good job... you are very special... you are one of a kind. Cheers from the shed... (man... I'll be sore tomorrow)
