    Nowadays 3D Touch is much closer to BLTouch from design perspective. It has the same wire harness, same style plastic pins. It is probably hard to tell what is the difference when using firmware like Marlin, Kingroon etc. However, In Klipper you will find the difference when you begin to test newly installed 3D Touch. It will respond as intended on BLTOUCH_DEBUG COMMAND=pin_up and BLTOUCH_DEBUG COMMAND=pin_down (of course, if the harness connected correctly), but when you switch to the touch_mode and check touch pin and it will retract, and then check the state with query_probe command, it will never give you the TRIGGERED state. I spent hours trying to figure out why this command refuses to work, blaming contact loss and so on. Then I found the answer. The official Klipper responded on this in the topic #5088 and the answer was like "Klipper does not support clones when query_probe.". Other than that everything like G28 works fine and it stops when touch pin on descending. Oh, and probably on 3D Touch you will need to check pin itself (the pin side where the magnet is mounted). Magnet should not move inside the pin, otherwise this will give you big inaccuracy in sensor readings. In some videos people cut the plastic on the magnet side of the pin and glue it on.

    Dude. I unfortunately don't get to say this enough (especially not on youtube anymore). This a real honest review with proper research done. I like this very much. Thumbs up! A lot of people automatically assume that something made in China or any other country than European or USA is worse. And as such, let that opinion colour their review. But in the case of small consumer electronics, the differences are to small for any normal person to notice. And no, i'm not from China, I'm from Europe. Good review!

    I felt it necessary to edit my comment here. I had already ordered a Bltouch clone before watching your video. My clone turned out to be a dud. The servo mechanism did not work. No amount of cleaning , adjusting or tweaking made it work. I went and ordered a genuine Bltouch to replace it and it worked right out of the box. No adjusting or fiddling required. The Many hours I I spent trying to debug the clone could have been better spent doing anything besides messing with a piece of crap. I can't recommend the clone to anyone really. There are many on the forums that have suffered the same fate as me with the clone. My advice is to save your money elsewhere, not on this part. 😩

    Thanks for the video. I had a bit different experience with 3dtouch sensor on my Ender 3... The standard deviation in corners was between 0.06-0.2mm, in the center it was around ~0.02mm, so i was able to print only in the center of the bed. Tried to tight everything on the printer but nothing helped. When i replaced the sensor with the original one (got it from Amazon) i got the deviation between 0.003-0.009mm which is way better... The first layer is now perfect...

    In 2020, even the no-name BL Touch clones now come with the extra wiring and accessories.
    After having some problems with my clone's pin not deploying, I replaced the metal push pin with a similar length of 1.75mm ABS filament that I straightened. The magnet for the hall effect sensor is just held onto the pin with some heat shrink tubing that you can easily pull off.
    The clone's standard deviation went from between 0.03-0.07 to 0.01-0.02.
    I didn't think such a small reduction in weight would increase the accuracy and consistency that much but there you go.
    I guess that's why the BL Touch switched to plastic pins lol.

    Thanks for the video/review. I have both and connected both up to a printer (clone of a Prusa!) first with a glass bed, second time without. Then did some wierd things like actually made the bed seriously unlevel (slanted) by placing a 1.5mm bar under the print bed one side (gradual increase in Z hight with X) and then one corner (gradual increase in Z height for BOTH X and Y). After all the print tests All PLA @ 195'C to a 50'C bed. honestly didn't see a difference between them. Leave the bar there and perform manual bed levelling use feeler gauges (not a piece of paper!), with a digital and then an analogue depth gauge (both pretty accurate and used in CNC milling) and well within the margin of error of the BLtouch measurements you quoted to see what the differences really was. Nothing. Auto levelling was a bit faster once fitted but manual was just as good and if you don't move the printer about doesn't have to be redone often.

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great testing! Thanks for watching the video. I wonder if the clone sensors are getting better since I bought mine. I wouldn't mind giving these tests another try at some point with new sensors to see if anything has changed.

    • @dombaines
      @dombaines 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris thanks for the video and pragmatic view. I know the clones are clones and the BLTouch is the original (although not sure the concept is that original) and I have paid for one myself but given 99% of people are working with clone printers and not some original it is a tad hypocrytical of some trying to take the high ground about the BLtouch IMHO. That said some clearly have had a rough time with dodgey poor sensors but I bet they might have been really cheap so the caveat 'buyer beware' definitely rings true. If the clones were all that bad they would not be selling them and as you and lots of others have said they still work and at a tollerance level that is fine for home/hobby use. I honesty prefer manual levelling maybe I'm just a bit odd?

    • @dombaines
      @dombaines 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As asked... my previous clones were from Triangle Labs through Aliexpress. I just bought another from them £10.80 inc shipping to UK! It's in front of me now. Interestingly says "based on ANTClabs" on them, also it doesn't have solder on wires but a plug/socket and 80cm wire with board connections on other end so no more crimping etc

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all, if you have a nice sturdy machine, manual leveling is still the way to go. I personally like the inductive sensors a bit better, but not near as flexible as the BLtouch of course.

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Redemptioner1
    @Redemptioner1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great basic video but you miss the main issue with this sensor, in particular the BL Touch. It has some heatshrink holding the hall effect sensor trigger (magnet) to the probe pin. This means when your hotend heats up the accuracy drops way off as the heatshrink starts to heat up and unevenly change shape. So depending on when you do the calibration and how hot the whole are is, it will massively effect the BL touch accuracy. By how much you ask, well it can be by more than 0.1mm which can be more than 1 layer height. This is why many people report that the accuracy on the BL touch is not good enough, especially if they run a calibration before or between prints as the sensor pin has effectively changed length. The electromagnet inside holding the pin up also suffers badly from heat, this means on a printer with an enclosure the pin can drop down during a print due to the increase heat and ruin prints and or course bend the BL touch pin. The standard deviation of the BL touch on a cold setup might not be much, but the accuracy is not very high (pretty much the worst on the market for Z probe sensors) and it gets worse the hotter it gets....

    I've got one clone 'BLTouch' that works quite nicely. And another that never worked. Then again, my genuine BLTouch only lasted a couple of months before it's died (probably my fault when clearing off plastic), but when you're upgrading a printer that cost a little over £100 a £40 part is quite a lot.
    The problem is that when you can get a functional clone for 1/4 the price then people feel they are being overcharged. Antclabs could work with a Chinese manufacturer to do licenced parts for £20-25 and I think they would sell sufficiently more to make more money out of what is genuinely a useful design.
    For those saying about copyright, that would offer little protection from someone creating something functionally comparable. Antclabs claim to have a patent, but the design looks closely based on an open source design that was published a year before their first model, so their patent is likely unenforceable. It also means that they only refined an open source design and then claimed it as proprietary, which in stifling use of similar designs based around similar (originally open) principles is arguably even worse than the clones.

      Actually, that's totally how innovation works. The moment you close it off from other great minds the technology stagnates and never matures. The only thing happening here is a little less money going into their R&D department. But this will now develop and mature much faster because it's becoming more accessible to a much larger crowd.

    More great info. Thanks Chris! The other consideration with these particular sensors is that the BLTouch is not open source. China's copyright laws are apparently MUCH more lenient than most other countries. This means that the knock off is a copyright violation and is taking money from the innovator of this great product. Of course, most people probably only care about their own costs vs. performance, not so much how their purchase decision impacts a particular company. However, in this instance, it wasn't even a company that created the BLTouch but a girl in Korea. Going to their website, www.antclabs.com, you see that this is not a huge corporation with hundreds of products. It's just a girl who invented something and is selling just that thing. As such, the more people who purchase the knock-off, the less the innovator is recognized and rewarded for her efforts and the less innovation we are likely to see in the future. (Stepping off of soapbox now)

    Statistically, you should estimate your plus/minus tolerance based on at least 2 standard deviations (95% of a normal distribution .. using only 1 srd dev as you did is only 68%). For comparing that tolerance to a 200um layer height, the full tolerance range using 2 std devs .. would be 4X the std dev values you measured. So you should be comparing 44um to 200um for the BL Touch ... and 127um to 200um for the 3D Touch .... now there is a clear winner and loser, right? In fact, the error range of the 3D Touch sensor could be as bad as the bed flatness error on a decent printer, rendering the 3D Touch useless.
