3D Touch sensor - the biggest issue

  • In this video, I am talking about the biggest issue with the 3D touch sensor and I am also announcing the July 2019 giveaway. Have fun watching!
The 3D touch sensor seems to have an inheritent problem with vibrations causing the sensor needle to fall down occasionally. This can lead to fatal print interruptions and the needle can get bent when it hits printed parts at the same time.
I am showing how to fix a bent 3D touch needle, how to magnetize the needle to prevent it from falling out and also I am showing you what to change in your slicer software to avoid the printhead from scratching printed parts especially when you are printing multiple parts at the same time.
Also if you intent to install a 3D touch or BLTouch sensor to your Anet A8, watch my video about it here: • BLTouch on the Anet A8...

Hello Crosslink, I have been watching your videos for a while now. I was gifted with an Anet A8 a little over a year ago and have given time to learning it as work and family allow. I am now at the point where I have printed the enhancements and some toys for the kids. I have chosen to learn about 3d printing for a couple of reasons. I see that there is an incredible paradigm shift in the youth of my generation and the current one. 3d printing coupled with electronics will allow this generation to create things like never before. I am learning and teaching my kids how it works and how to do it. I also have kids involved with cosplay and they build their own costumes. I am learning how to design wearables with special effects that they can use to augment their costumes. Thirdly, I also enjoy woodworking when I get the time. I intend to use plans for a DIY cnc router from printed parts.
I have learned a lot from your videos. I did have to upgrade my sanguino board with the proxy arduino so that I could install marlin. I got the steps and wiring from your videos. I have also added several of the safety enhancements from your video as well. I am now getting decent prints but I am starting to learn more advanced tuning features both in the tweaking of temperature and filaments rates as well as using the software for better prints.
I will stop there before I write a book on your site.
In short, thanks, I have very much enjoyed the videos and look forward to getting much better at this 3d printing.

Hi Daniel, I have found your channel really useful, especially in upgrading my A8, to Marlin and adding Mosfets to the hot end and bed. Just watched your video on upgrading the LCD which I have just ordered, so I have subscribed. I am, and always have been a tinkerer, and would use an Ender to generally make items like sliders for metal shed doors, and other practical item around the home, also for upgrades for tools and fish tanks.
Thanks for a great channel, keep up the great work.

Great video Daniel and love your channel. Glad you suggested the Z Hop. I was sitting here saying to myself while watching "Use Z Hop!" I currently I have an Ender 3 and what used to be an Anet A8. (been modified with a 4020 AM8 frame and linear rails for all axes) but I just love my Ender 3. However I find that there are times where two printers just aren't enough because long prints tie up both printers and I have to wait until one of them is complete. Another Ender 3 would be fantastic to add to my group so that I can get more done in the same amount of time. I have been 3d printing for a little over a year and have somewhat gotten out of the novelty phase of printing silly stuff and have been using my printers to make replacement parts for things around the house and made some great lithophanes as gifts this past Christmas. I'm really getting good with Fusion 360 and creating my own designs to print. Keep up the great work Daniel!

Oddly, It seems the comments don't relate to the video content, guess people were only interested in the give away.
    - The 3D touch in the video is the old model, the current one (v1.2) does not have a metal needle, it is plastic and looks the same (or extremely similar) to the one on the BLtouch. This should decrease the mass and reduce the main issue the video discusses so buyers should look for that one. Many in the distribution channel are still the old ones even though the new one was released several months ago.
    - One doesn't need a special device to magnetize a screwdriver, it's easily done with any strong magnet, I use a neodymium magnet salvaged from an old hard drive.

i already have an A8 that have upgraded using your videos. It has been a great printer but it is getting wore out and i have so many good things about the ender 3d printer. I am big into radio control cars, trucks, airplanes, and boats and i really enjoying making my own parts for them. Plus i make any thing else that i can dream up.

Hello Daniel, I have been working on model railways for years. I think I can print many parts in 3D, such as tunnel portals and retaining walls. I have watched many of your films and I do like that possibility. I have already tried to design something in Thinkercad and that is going well. I keep watching your movie. It is a new world, I should have been born later. (now 1948)

I wonder why z-hopping is not on by default. Is it because of slightly longer print times, or does the print quality decrease (I saw some upwards stringing on the video)?
Also, I would use a 3d printer to create tools and guides for my woodworking projects, and possibly print some miniatures for d&d

Everyday I try to make something new and a 3d printer would be an amazing tool. I think I should win this contest because ever since I was little I have always had the urge to make new things and improve upon past designs and with a 3d printer I could achieve so much more. Thanks again!

I'm glad I didn't bother with the mechanical sensors.
Mainly because I blew 12 volts through my bed temp pin and had to steal the only servo pin to fix it.
But the number of times I've jammed my print head into stuff really makes me question whether a BLTouch would have survived.

    • @thumbwarriordx
      @thumbwarriordx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

There is techincally one more pin you can repurpose on the Anet board. You can gang Z-enable to XY-enable and break out that pin.
However in my case I literally broke off that pin. So I wouldn't recommend it.

Like many users, you've performed a lot of modifications to your Anet A8. Perhaps you could do an overview of the different mods, why you decided to do them (or use a particular design over a similar one.) and which ones yielded the best results. For example: Apparently, you replaced an inductive sensor with a less sensitive (or so I've heard) and evidently more problematic touch sensor. But you never mentioned what brought on the change.

Hi Daniel, great hack and wonderful explainination in in the video. Thankyou for running the giveaway too. I am interested in the Ender 3. I want to design a service robot - an open source vaccum cleaning robot design for people to print and use with off the shelf electronics and open source visual mapping; to make their own device which is cost effective and can compete with brand offerings like Neato, Dyson etc. In short power to the users, instead of paying the hefty price to the corporation people can build their own robotic appliance. To this effect based on the reviews the ender 3 seems to give better prints with minimal mods and upgrades. The build will comprise of the robot chassis, wheels, motor bracket and suspension and electronic enclosures.

Hi Daniel! I love your video! I would honestly like 3d printer because of the following simple reasons:
    1. I never had a 3d printer despite designing many CAD files for printing because I never had the money for it!
    2. I want to design and print 'smart' equipment to show people how close we are to that futuristic cyberpunk world, were 3d printing + microcontroller programming can allow people to make pretty much everything they want!
    3. I want to review my creations here on TH-cam to show people that you don't have to always go and buy the most expensive stuff, sometimes a little DIY and tutorials can help you make things cheaper and understand them better! 😋

I have just installed the BL Touch on my ender 3 pro .
After a lengthy process of installing and making sure everything was ok
I managed to do a first print ,taking approx. 45 min.
    This was an amazing print
I changed the pla and turned the ender back on ,as soon as I did. I got a very strong smell of electrical burning
The light immediately went out on the sensor
I am now left with this not working at all

The needle had not been damaged or anything, as it had returned to home after the last print

It has a magnet inside the heat shrink tubing. The needle is aluminum, it's not magnetic. Cut a tiny bit of that extra heat shrink tubing on the top which will bring it close to the set screw allowing it to 'stick' better. just don't take all of it off it it may stick too much.

Hey, Thanks for your time . i have manually leveled my bed, 4x4_mesh Marlin_2.0_bugfix. I was wondering, is the BLTOUCH worth having ? All most every time I make a change to the system i have to redo the mesh (LCD). As well my printer is home made (me 60 retired) and i spend more time fixing and making part for it than i should. When it's in a good mood I print D&D for my son and his friends, gadgets for the house and car. I contribute everything i design to Thingiverse (Sanity check). Cheers all.

  • @MisterkeTube
    @MisterkeTube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

My 3DTouch has very bad accuracy. I feel the BLTouch design is flawed because of using a Hall sensor as this makes it less accurate and reliable as external magnetic fields can affect the detection. Why is no company making a servo + opto-interruptor based probe? With dedicated components, that could be made as small and much more accurate (as the light used for sensing is not affected by external factors).

They love the models and I can create models unique to the individuals favourite character, which greatly helps them learn and they absolutely love it. I'd love to be able to get better quality that a Ender 3 would give as sometimes I cannot print the models they want good enough, or even at all, and as I dont accept any money for what I do, I can't afford a better printer to do what I want to do for them. I have ordered a replacement pin and will try it out. Let's see. What inductive sensor are you using? Mine is 4mm sensing distance and 8mm diameter.

I would like to get an 3d printer especial Ender3 because to make prosthetic hands and giving it for free like E-nable is doing and also Printing Different types of Prototypes and printing Iron Man suits. I already have an anet a8 but i am not satisfied with the prints so i really need a new printer and I will not take it completely for free I will pay you ( its because new printer will cost too much and i cant afford that) . and I love 3d printers and I love to teach people about 3d printers
    Thank you

Greetings, i've never won a "give away" and my hopes of winning this one are slim to none but none the less, here goes nothing. :D
I am an engineering student and i have some personal projects of my own that i'd love to hold on my hands, sometimes i can't sleep at night because i go into a loop of thinking too much about them, as if an engineering student doesn't get enough sleep, now its nearly impossible. XD
    P.S.: Pls send help.

I would love to put a 3D Touch on a printer if I won one... and turn it into a 3D printing workhorse to sell different 3D printed objects. This video on the 3D Touch was very informative, especially the part about re-magnetizing it.

Hello, Daniel, I will love to win the Ender 3 because I want to start posting videos about building an entire workshop(building a not just a CNC router, also every type of saw, drill press, jointer, a metal lathe; etc.) with the help of 3D printing; so everybody with a 3d printer can replicate the project. But my problem is this: I live in Argentina and we have to pay to import a 3d printer a lot of taxes (almost 50% of the cost of the product+ shipping) and even then, the product can be retained ( It happened to me twice). In the case of a giveaway we only pay taxes for the shipping and the controls are not that strict.
I want to thank you for your content and if I win my twitter account is @FedericoLugon
Pd: Sorry for my English and good luck to everybody

My twitter is @Heat_Advisory . I want a 3d printer because I have a muscular disease and want to build stuff that I physically can't. I am also going to build custom buttons for the xbox adaptive controller to help other disabled people.

Hi Daniel, greetings from a Dutch neighbour! :) I would love to win one of the 3D printers because I'm looking forward to start creating things with my kids. I was already looking around for a nice printer to start with 3D printing and my the Anet A6 cought my eye. personally I would use the printer to create futuristic masks and other fun projects. If i would win, I might pick the A8 as you can modify it almost to no end... something that fascinates me, the idea of owning a machine, that can make it's own upgrade parts and by doing that, improves itself. love the channel, it has a lot of information for a beginner like myself! Hi Daniel, thanks for another grate and helpful video.
I would like to get the ender 3 printer mainly to make my own Frankenstein. I would like too add a new main board to it, 3d touch and some more upgrades that if i wold buy the printer by my own wold just be a too big investment.
    Thank you, @ilay_segal.

Hey Daniel, Thanks for the great content! I would like to enter your contest. Thanks to you my son has the ambition and courage to start his own TH-cam channel, and THIS IS IT!! Thank you so much! We just ordered a camera and he's super excited to get it and get started making content. He said, "he would like to win the Ender 3 (We have an A6) and he would print 100 of his maker coins to do a give away on his channel." He also said, "He would print thousands of other things while creating videos, showing kids, how they can do anything they put their minds to.
DISCLAIMER: We have already entered this contest under my account (Matthew Findley), but Aiden wanted to join as well with his newly created account. Thanks Daniel!!! CONTACT: @MakesAutism on Twitter

Man, the problem is that 3D Touch is a cheap clone of BL Touch.

    • @Crosslink3D
      @Crosslink3D  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, that could be one of the reasons. But more people buy cheap... Btw. there is a new version of the 3D Touch with a different needle. Need to test this as well soon.

@@Crosslink3D Daniel, it's not just a needle. A year ago I got two 3DTouch sensors for my A8 (long gone), one of them wasn't working from the beginning (the needle was not retracting automatically at all), second one had problems with that thick aluminium needle falling from sensor body in the middle of print. It's just a cheap clone. That's all it is. Sure I know many people will buy 3D Touch because it cheaper, but that's what you should expect when you get cheap replicas. So my point is that it might be a good idea to get cheap sensor just to try how does auto-leveling work, but in a long run you should by an original sensor which will save you time and nerves. Same thing with Anet A8 printer - cool cheap thing to start with, not good for a long run.
