@Alaskan donut Yes... the concept cars area at first modelled in clay, adding some parts and wraps to give the illusion than it's a real car... that way the executives can have an idea about how would it look if it was real.
I’ve seen these in person when I lived overseas. The most striking aspect of the Scirocco is how low and wide it is. It’s basically a squished Golf. I think the dimensions are just a few inches different here and there but it makes a huge difference in terms of looks.
Over in the UK they're pretty common and you see these fairly often. They do look pretty cool on the road. It's the sort of car where when you see one you say to yourself "Oo nice Scirocco!". Strange to think that they're rare in other parts of the world.
Well, I'll say this much: this is pure shit compared to an actual Scirocco, that car is just SOO hot. They got the overall stance right, but VW did some of its finest design work on the Scirocco.

I'm from Singapore and I currently own a 2011 Scirocco 1.4 TSI for 3 months so far. Although the practicality lacks in certain areas, it really is a fun car to drive not to mention how good it looks exterior-wise. It really brings me back to the last days of simple automaking in the late 2000s/early 2010s. One thing for certain that I'm not really a big fan of when it comes to the Scirocco is the massive A-pillars, you really gotta crank your neck to look out for curbs or anything of that sort whenever you're making right turns in a junction. It does however have an infamous reputation in Singapore because of the fact that many delinquents favour the Scirocco, there have been many cases and incidents where Sciroccos would get into stupid accidents and even put other drivers in danger, just a little fact.
@@TVCHLORD Sciroccos are pretty budget friendly in europe thats why alot of youngsters drive them first cars usually tend to be Scirocco, Audi A3 8P 3 Door (i own one myself awesome car as well) mk6 golf 3 door usually or a mk5 golf, they all tend to be around the sam area depending on the specs and year they are around 5k to 10k
The owner did an amazing job on this build. Doug could have easily said this was 100% stock and I would have believed it and thought I had just never heard of it. You have to love custom builds that look stock
This build brings back memories! Thanks to Alex for bringing this up to Doug for review. Sad to hear you're selling the car but I'm sure it will continue to bring smiles to the new owner. @Doug, we really apprecaiate your feedback regarding the fit and finish of the car. We pride ourselves on delivering our custom builds as if they've rolled off the factory floor at Wolfsburg and it's great to see that 13 years later this Scirocco still delivers! We are in our 32nd year of business and we still love the VR6 engine and all it has to offer. Stay posted as we are imminently close to announcing a new VR6T program that's sure to make waves. ;)
Great to see HPA getting some love and exposure! But lets not forget your work with 2.0T! I had my car, A4 Avant, shipped to HPA during the lockdown to get a custom turbo setup/custom dyno tune (to replace their K04 I already had installed for a few years with no issues). Worked with Alan during the whole process. They're one of the best shop I've ever dealt with, even with being over 2,000 miles away, in another country no less. Great customer service, great workmanship. Was originally going to drive the car there but the virus put a stop to that, so I still need to get up there to see you guys! Keep up the great work!
I used to own a VW Scirocco R (2010) and absolutely loved it, sold it to a Friend who now had several Changes made to it. The Tuning Scene for these is pretty big in Germany and of course here in Germany these are everywhere and not hard to find. I wish Americans could get these as well and still don't know why they don't. Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
People really don't understand the joy of driving a GTI or other performance VW. The joy is more than the sum of the parts. They aren't really that high performance, they're just fun.
@@jeffk464 Considering the fact that the Golf [GTI] name is known universally, even among non-enthusiasts, I don't think it's accurate at all to say that "People really don't understand the joy of driving a GTI...". Sales numbers alone show that people, in fact, *do* understand the "joy" of driving this specific performance VW hatchback.
It's a different culture here in the USA. In Germany, you have TUV inspections, which do thorough inspections on ALL vehicles to be driven on public roads and can fail a car on even such things as windshield wipers, bad tires, and even minor cracks on the windshield. The USA is pretty heavily regulated, but that's primarily for new cars. For aftermarket and used cars, it's kind of like the Wild Wild West out here. Cracks in the windshield, bald tires, etc. aren't likely to keep your car off the road as it would in Germany. Seriously, would you really want to let a car on the Autobahn at triple digit speeds with bald tires and bad brakes?
So cool to see HPA getting some well deserved clout. Canada’s best kept secret in the VW and Audi tuning world. Their twin-turbo VR6 builds are absolutely bananas 🤘🤘
@@jeffk464 its very fast but the engine and transmission is weak, you cant beat the car on a daily basis like i used to do with american cars, i hate my audi, biggest financial mistake i made
This build really shows how modular VW's cars are, and how skillful people can take advantage of it. I've got a '09 Skoda Octavia RS estate, which is basically a Mk6 Golf GTI with a different design, and some of the Golf's extras were unavailable in the Octavia. I had the same radio/GPS system in my Octavia as this Scirocco has, but switched it for a VW Composition Media PQ. Now I have CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in Bluetooth (opposed to a module under the front passanger's seat) and DAB+ as well (AFAIK, US versions had satellite radio tuner instead of DAB+). The steering wheel controls do work as well. It would be worth looking into this upgrade for the future owner of this Golfrocco :) (there's also the Discover Media PQ, which adds GPS, but who needs that with CarPlay or Android Auto?)
I was hoping this was going to be a floor pan conversion. I wonder if you could take a us Jetta or similar and convert it to a us legal Octavia. I would have thought just using the running gear wouldn’t be enough to use the us spec cars vin.
@@MrJordanwain the pre-facelift Octavia Mk2 is basically a Golf Mk5, the post-facelift is a Mk6, and the Mk3 Octavia should be based on the Golf Mk7. At least that's how it is here in Europe, the US spec Golf might differ. I believe guts of a Mk6 GTI could be used to convert a post-FL Mk2 Octavia RS to meet US specs. Maybe even the wiring loom could stay as well, as the engines are very similar (CCZB in the Golf and CCZA in the Octavia). The only thing what is questionable, are the headlights. Speaking of US spec VWs, I would trade my '09 Octavia RS for a US spec Golf Mk6 with the 2.5 liter inline-5 engine, because I love the sound of an I5 :) (had a '98 Volvo V70 2.5 TDI before, and a '98 C70 T5 as well)
@@volvo09 That's true, but with his reputation I would think people that have or know about a clean build would approach him. Maybe it's just me, but I also wouldn't mind seeing the occasional hack if it's something really cool like the 2J swapped minivan.
The Scirocco is common in my country, people modded them and crashed them many times. We also got the Scirocco TSI R (188kw) with extra gauges on the top of the dashboard. Electric seats, updated headlights and taillights from 2015. Its actually wide and low in reality. It still looks great even today.
I love the fact Doug knows VW facts and our VAG events such as H20i…I always wanted to convert my Eos to a Rocco’ but totaled it before I could make that happen. This is a great build and hope to have one of these in my garage when they turn 25yr old
Hey Doug, thank you for still reviewing some of these more unique and fun cars! I appreciate you sticking to your roots now that you have more financial freedom. I also enjoy the new cars as well but I think you have found a nice balance overall.
Can’t believe I’m seeing a video of you reviewing a Scirocco 🤩 the facelift Mk3.5 VW Sciroccos are even better looking!! It’s a shame it was never sold in the states…
@@bwofficial1776 100% missing the point. The Scirocco and Golf would perform identically but one is infinitely more practical. A Prius or minivan is no comparison because the performance isn't the same. If two vehicles perform the same, why would you choose the less practical version? Nothing about that "looks" better to me. It is the same with the Civic Si Hatchback vs Civic Si Sedan/Saloon. Identical performance, one is just far more practical. Why would anyone want the less practical version? It "looks" like a stupid choice.
@@rayhan4502 That makes zero sense as it is just worse in every way. Appreciating a beautiful RWD sports car vs a hot hatch is one thing, because the sports car will perform better in most cases. But a FWD hot hatch vs a slightly gimped vs of the same car with zero performance difference is just worse in every way.
I had a 1976 Scirocco bought new, headers and ansa exhaust and mild tune...loved that car, weird handling characteristics--the neighborhood named it the flying mosquito! loved that car
Walter de Silva’s most emblematic creation was the 1997 Alfa Romeo 156. This was never imported to the US (Alfa had left when this came out). I remember when it first came out and I saw one on the street. Jaw dropping beautiful. Considered by many as one of the most beautiful sedans ever made at the time. It made Walter de Silva famous and VW snatched him soon after. And it was a sedan. Not a coupe, or a sports car. A sedan. Proof that you can make an everyday car beautiful.
What has not been mentioned is that the front bumper, side skirts and the lower rear bumper section are aftermarket parts too. The original Scirocco bumpers don't look that aggressive.
I am from China. And spent my teenage years there. I remembered when this car came out when I was 10. In China, this car is called ShangKu in Chinese pronunciation. At the time, I think this car is the coolest looking car and sportiest. That time my mom is driving Tiguan and my father drives a Camry which are pretty boring looking car to young me. Whenever I saw people driving this, i cannot take my eyes off it. Just pure gold childhood memory. I almost forgot about this car, until this video came up. Definitely brought back memories. Good work as always Doug!!❤
I always love seeing these when I'm abroad, and as a GTI owner and fan, I love the build. Surprised Doug didn't mention that the grille on this example is definitely from an early-model Audi R8.
Gorgeous car….usually there are beautiful cars that we love but have some kind of styling that we don’t like. However this car is truly perfect from every angle you look at it! I wish to own it one day and if i can’t I will customize it myself. Great review Doug as always.
Buddy of mine had a Scirocco back in the late ‘80’s, early 90’s. He cut the back end off and grafted a tag axle. Yes. It had 6 wheels. It was awesome looking. Made it into a ton of VW magazines.

122hp and "super fun" don't really seem to go in the same sentence too me... My Passat has 170hp (which drives more like 190hp) and I'd say it's decently fun. 🤷
@@jasono2139 well you did not drive the scirocco, only people who drove them know how fun they are. Just because it's not extremely fast does not mean it's not fun. I had a tlx a spec and now a mach E GT performance with 480hp and the scirocco was more fun to drive around corners. The GT is just extreme fast off the line.
@@scottthebullet I test drove a Jetta which also had 120hp... It was terrible. Otherwise, I could say the same thing about my Passat. After lowering it, putting aftermarket wheels on it, and increasing the front and rear track, I would bet money it corners just as good as your Scirocco.
@@MrDuncl I’ve probably driven close to a hundred different cars in my life so far and I can safely say that you don’t need a ton of power to have fun. A 150 hp civic with low weight and a manual gearbox can make me grin just as good as a 600hp amg mercedes boat tbh
I love the old Scirrocco, looks like a mini Audi rally car. Love the golf R32 and really sad the engine went away for the golf R. The Scirocco R doesn't even have 4WD. I love seeing them on the road so this is the best of both worlds
I don't know why we like sedans. Give me a wagon, hatch or SUV. Probably gonna have to buy a sedan for pure mpg soon. I wish there was some good used hatchbacks on the market but nope.
Sciroccos are fairly common where I live and its my friend's all-time favourite VW. They are getting quite expensive tho as VW stopped making them in 2017. The nice thing about them tho is that like Doug said, they are basically more wide Golfs so everything when it comes to engine and maintenance is exactly the same. I really hope VW will bring them back, im not much of a VW guy but these cars are definitely exceptional compared to other models.
Brings back great memories of my friends '81 Scirocco S. Got it new as a H.S. graduation present. One of the best handling cars ever! Too bad VW stopped selling them in the US.
I wrote an email to Volkswagen demanding they bring the Scirroco back to the U.S. They think it will cannibalize the GTI, but they're wrong. Car buyers like me will NEVER buy a GTI. I can't guarantee I'd buy a Scirocco even if VW brought it here, but it would at least get me into the dealership. As it stands, there is absolutely NOTHING in VW's lineup that will bring me to the dealer. Fantastic video, Doug. Thank you!
@MrDuncl Realistically, I love everything about the GTI except its appearance... it's always seemed, well, frumpy (don't shoot me). I mean, styling is obviously subjective and really shouldn't make a difference since it has no effect on the capability of a vehicle. Ironically, this fact should be particularly true for me - my daily driver is a 2011 Miata FRHT and my motorcycle is a 2015 Triumph Speed Triple, neither of which have styling that I really like but performance I LOVE. My problem with Volkswagen was the modern Scirroco was amazing to me because it blended the performance of the GTI with styling I preferred. The fact VW wouldn't just bring it to the U.S. always bugged me. Similarly, I'm irritated that Subaru killed the WRX wagon in the U.S. I know - the WRX wagon is SO similar to the GTI in so many ways - but, for me, I've never cared for Subaru's styling (except for my Toyobaru 2013 FR-S that I sold last year when used car prices skyrocketed) so I always looked at the WRX wagon as a multi-function utility vehicle: I'd have a great car for hauling people and stuff with AWD for the winter, but then it would be a blast to drive in the twisties. The big difference between the WRX and the GTI/Scirocco was that Subaru didn't have a nicer-looking model it was refusing to sell and VW did. I know, I know. I'm crazy. Thanks for asking, though - I appreciated the question! 😀👍
@@GetIrked Thanks for the comprehensive reply. As a former Ford Capri driver I know what you mean. With the Capri (look up Mercury Capri if you are in the USA) the designers were told to take the boring Cortina family saloon and make something that looked far better for slightly more money. I and the market think they succeeded. Many were what people joked were Sheep in Wolfs clothing. Mine was a 72HP 1.6L. It was actually the original Golf GTI which killed off cars like the Capri. The market preference switched to Wolf in Sheep's clothing. A former colleague told me how his Mother test drove a Golf VR6 not realising it was a performance car and gave herself a big scare 🙂
I am an absolute sucker for the Capri. It’s like the American version of the ‘80s Scirocco or, better still, the Corrado. Hearing about your friend’s Mom test-driving a Golf VR6 made me laugh out loud - I have a theory that there are tens of thousands of WRX STIs never revved above 4K because they were owned by grannies convinced to buy the top-of-the-line model by the salesguy without ever asking what they were getting for the price. I can’t mock your 72HP engine at all. I owned a 108HP 1995 Miata and a 150HP Mustang from 1997 with a whopping 3.8L V6 (Ford had to TRY to only produce 150HP from an engine that large - my 2011 MX5 makes 167HP from a measly 4 cylinder). 😆
@@GetIrked Before Hot Hatches became popular the cool small coupes for sale in the U.K. included the Capri, Opel Manta, Sirocco, Toyota Celica, Nissan 200SX. They did Jettas and Golfs with basically the same hardware, but the New Beetle is the car you'd least expect it from.
The line that runs across from the top of the door to the quarter panel and to the top of the taillight is so good. It makes it loon like a big booty/wide body Golf. Truly amazing!

@@Afraz_9n3 Crazy price yes but this car is far from stock and if I had to guess, the owner spent probably almost that much to build it, if not more since this is a complete build and every aspect of the car has been tastefully modified to pretty much beyond OEM standards and that does not come cheap.

I've had a mental asterisk next to 2023 in my head for quite a while, reminding me that early examples of this third generation Scirocco would be legal for import here in Canada as they are now beyond the 15 year restriction. It'll be interesting to see how they're priced. A dealer in Quebec has what must be one of the first imported examples listed for $30K CAD, but I suspect they've priced in a significant premium for the current rarity in the market.
My neighbor would lend me his 81 Scirocco when he was out of town. Only 90 hp? But, what a blast to drive! So fun and nimble, great seats, good shifter, and crisp handling. Cars today are so heavy and over assisted.

I did a lot of my early learning to drive stick in an 80s Scirroco while in shop class freshman year 89. It was a buddies who just wanted it fixed for free (newer used ride a blessing at the time) and my teacher would let me use it to run to the local Napa to get parts. Different times.

Great to see HPA getting some love and exposure! But lets not forget your work with 2.0T!

Thank you!
They stopped manufacturing these in 2017 anyhow. On interest why don't you like the GTI ? What type of cars do you like ?
With the big engine and the 4x4 it has everything the EU Scirocco missed, what a cool cool conversion, really like it!
Absolutely love the scirroco wish we had them in the states
Edit: i remember it being one of my favorites on forza
They are absolutely beautiful hatchbacks, i always think of them as the golf's sexy sister. There's loads of nice ones here in the UK.
14:35 its a sleeper, yeah. I love sleepers.
As someone from the UK i love watching vids like this (on this channel and others) of Americans that have European cars over there. It must be so cool owning something like this in the U.S i bet it starts so many conversations. There's a really good set of videos on an American who imported a TVR chimera over to the U.S recently, love that too. :)
As a fellow UK viewer I agree. Also they chimaera your talking about is it the one that was in max power and imported to the US for car trek?
@@Afraz_9n3 Yeah that's the one, there's a few more also. Another one i was keeping an eye on was on a smaller channel called Aaron's Eccentric Garage. :)
It's funny i saw the Max Power TVR about a year ago or so on a video titled: "Taking the World's Only RICER TVR For a Joy Ride!" and then the YT algorithm popped it back up in the importing to the U.S vids a while later lol
@@moodswinggaming2972 haha yh I remember watching that same video it was Adam C I believe or maybe was hard up garage since they owned it before it was imported. The story's actually pretty cool tbh it was sold by hard up garage to a guy in Scotland and then the car trek guy bought it from Scotland
I have loved this generation of Scirocco since the moment I first saw one in a car magazine or in a video game. Lovely design. If I had the money, I’d have bought it.
I got excited when I saw this video, I bought a scirocco almost a year ago. I love how it feels to drive even though it's the 2011 1.4tsi blue motion. It doesn't feel slow bc it's pretty light, and it handles great with 235 wide tires.
Had one as my first car. Sadly it got hit by a hailstorm pretty hard. I still miss it. Had tons of space, relatively big boot and drove amazing. To me it has timeless looks in stock. I used backseats 3x in 5 years I had it lol.
Whaha tons of space?
@@pinut187 Yes it did actually. It relatively wide so driver and passenger has good space. Definitely more space for a driver than for example X3 which I found extremely cramped. I'm not talking about the backseats as they are optional addon. xD The boot is also very practical and much bigger than it seems from the outside. This one Doug is showing has modified boot with raised floor so it is smaller than stock. You'd be surprised how much shit I carried in it xD
@@pinut187 I'm talking about euro standards and the space inside given exterior dimensions. Not comparing to some retard barn on the wheels they like to drive in US.
See them (the Scirocco) fairly often over here in Germany. Still look good to this day…
Might look good but it's still a shitbox
Love seeing them in the UK. Shame they're usually 2.0TDI though
@@schnuffelpuff3923 how/why is it a shitbox?
@@oremadetoye6010 Pretty simple, VW interiors and their pretty bad quality and there are much better handling hatchbacks you can get for less money.
Also 3 out of 5 friends that drive/drove a Volkswagen needed way more repairs and had more electrical gremlins than my fkn' Alfa Romeo that's imo wrongfully known for being broken and having el. gremlins.
Don't get me wrong, you can have plenty of fun in a Scrirocco or a Golf but it might not be lasting as long as you'd think.
The best experience I had in a VW was in a Golf 6 driving 140kph on a dirt road while seeing the undertray getting ripped off in the mirror and feeling/hearing the dampers crying for mercy.
Probably don't have to tell you that the Golf is dead.
But hey, the world would suck if everyone had the same taste.
@@schnuffelpuff3923no
This is so cool.
Doug should do more modified cars!
I've been following Doug so long I remember when he used to just drive around and take pictures of cool cars. I have a lot of respect for Doug and what he does in the car industry. And he has certainly come a long way From the days of chasing cool cars around to get a photo. It shows you if you're good at what you do and you're determined to make it work, that you can. Doug is the proof. And hes not changed one bit through any of his success
My first car was a 1980, orange-red VW Scirocco. I loved it!
Ik a guy who has a tuned Scirocoo, and I can say that I really love Sciroccos. They look REALLY GOOD
My mom always had these as company cars. She loved them so much because it was more sporty than a Golf, while being the same price. Really a shame they cancelled it.
More modified/custom car reviews please Doug!
that front bumper is a crime
Imagine having all that work done to have something cool and unique and then bestowing it with that atrocity of a front bumper.
Exactly. It looks weird. The rest of the car looks fine
tbh the rest of the aftermarket body kit isnt much better and doesnt even seem to be colour matched properly
The way he says "Al rIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIght" - he sings it out...De Muro has bacome his own "Brand" brilliant communication skills, great man. Love him...
I live in the UK and I own a 2.0 tsi Scirocco it's stage 1 and has 260bhp but I absolutely love it
I've owned a scirocco r 2015 in Australia. Wish i had the same drive train as this one. Had always hoped Doug would review one... Here we are!
That thing looks incredible for a car that was sold in 2008. It looks a lot more modern. I assume that the original scirocco in Europe was of that era. I love it!
Dayum, I had a used '76 Scirocco till I saw the brand new '78 in November '77 in the VW showroom floor
It was a special model..some call it a Wolfsburg Edition or Champagne Edition.
It was Alpine White, all trim was blacked out and there were black stripes along the side and surrounding the hatch glass.
There was also a tape resembling a snake on the rear quarters panels that read 'Sidewinder'.
The dealer had put 50 series tires on it which gave it this low to the ground stance and filled out the wheelwells.
I fell in love right then and there and gave em a ck to hold it for me.
I paid $7K and my buddies thought I was crazy to pay that.
I kept my Scirocco till Summer of '85 and only paid $25 for a water pump. I did brakes, spark plugs and batteries myself.
I think...no...know...that it was the best car I've ever purchased / owned.
BTW, those Recaro type bucket seats were awesome !!!!
The scirocco is my second car and I do really love it. It’s a great allrounder it’s reliable, fun and kinda practical.
I have the version with the 2.0tdi as I drive 30k km a year and that would be to expensive when driving petrol. But it’s tuned and still plenty fast to get into trouble.
Have always loved the look of these, especially from behind. Big flared fenders in the back, it just looks like a sports car. How cool.
