The law of diminishing returns. You can tweak a car, but going all out with big mods, adding forced induction rarely bears fruit. Sure, you could buy a 2024 GTI and put a big turbo kit, suspension and all the go fast stuff on it, spending an extra $15-20k on it. But that $40k VW with $20k in mods will never be as good as the $60k BMW 2 series you could have bought with the same money. That doesn’t mean, you can’t take that GTI and dial in the suspension for what you do, add a little power here and there. But VERY few of us have the engineering background to actually modify a car into a higher bracket of capability. You may successfully add significant power, but odds are the overall experience and execution of the call will be ruined.
I bought this car with a 1.8liter engine used in Virginia Beach in 1992 and drove it up and down the Eastern Seaboard for clinical rotations, down to Mexico for a trip, then up the Al-Can to get me to Anchorage where I lived for a few years between med school and residency. The best iteration I had of this car was with studded snowtires, two spares on top with my snowboard and 5 gallon tank of gas (just in case), driving down the Al-Can in December on snowpacked roads for hundreds of miles to rejoin the continental US. The balance and torque steer were so predictable that I could rotate the car into a curve by giving more throttle or lightening off the throttle without altering the steering wheel orientation. It served me well throughout residency at UVa where I sold it. I wish I still had that car today.
VWs of that era were truly good. Usually they had less power than Italian cars but could do up to 800 thousand kilometers without overhaul. Todays VWs are mostly terrible and to be sure most can't come even close to mileages those old one could.
I had the choice of cars when I was in college, summer of1985, at the Fredericksburg, VA dealer wholesale auction. Two family members were used car dealers and my dad floor planned one of them and helped with car transport on occasion. However, my father was gracious enough to double my savings of $2,300 for a car. I honed in on a TR7 convert and my dad said no way, it’s a piece of junk. Next caught my eye was a Gen 1 Scirocco, then near to it was an ‘82 Gen 2 Scirocco. Won the auction on the Gen 2 at $4,300 just 3 years old and 40K on the Odo. Drove it 200K with synthetic oil and no car payments. I invested the difference of a car payment in the stock market in the late 80s and 90s. Now I’m retired at 47. The ‘82 Gen 2 was a great car in the snow (Colorado school) but was on;y good for 200K, absolutely not 800L Kilometers. However, I now wish I had bought the Gen 1 Scirocco and kept it. They are pricier today than Gen 2
Jason was an awesome guest on this episode, Good chemistry with Jay Leno. I was smiling the whole time watching, especially during the drive. I always liked the styling of that car, and nice to see an example that was tastefully and conservatively modified.
Yeah, that was pretty great. Two car knuckleheads. I built up a Mk3 Jetta 97 over a few years. Each modification was such a huge improvement. But, I still think the best was the short shifter conversion. The stock manual transmission has some kind of clunky shifter mechanism, but it really made a huge difference with new aftermarket hardware. I don't think I could have kept the VW Scirocco stock the way Jason has, so hat's off to him. It's a truly historic vehicle, now.
Maybe Jason can inherit Jay's collection or becomes the curator of Jay's cars he certainly has the personality and humor and Jason is toe to toe with Jay knowledge wise
What I love about Camissa n his Stig is that they are just themselves n does not force to be Clarkson n gang like every other automotive show. That authenticity is refreshing along with the sense of humor n just the format in way he presents the whole thing. It's like the perfect combo btw auto technicality n entertainment factor without being too over bearing. Like a noob would even like it and will get some interesting tit bits. It's a highly consumable format I like the guy from Raitis rides..very passionate. He got that sleek salesman energy lol

Yeah, I’ve always been a fan. Show me a hatchback & I’m usually going to be interested (the Lancia Delta Integrale Evo is probably my favorite car of all time).
I met jason in college when I placed a note on the windshield of the ONLY E30 wagon probably in America around our school at the time. Been friends ever since and such a great person!
The Scirocco has a special place in my heart. My girlfriend in high-school had one. A 81 (or 80) wolfsburg edition. Her father was stationed in Germany and bought the car brand new, brought it back to the USA, drove it but then it sat for several years. They restored it together when she was getting her license. At first I thought meh, some Volkswagen. The car was incredibly fun to drive, was quick, handled well. Really opened my mind. That is when i realized that cars did not need to be American v8s in order to be fun. Thanks for bringing the car on. I really miss that car. Her not so much. 😂
"Common" cars always become iconic and cool years or decades after they stop being common. Everyone knows the Ferrari's and Lambo's will be forever cool, but no one realizes how cool "Common" cars will be a few decades after theyre trashed and on their last legs. The biggest moment it hits you is when you havent seen one in years, and one makes its rare appearance around town. Or someone rolls up in a mint condition one.
I love how passionate and honest Jason is about his absolute love for his Scirocco and it really comes through when he talks about it, in his expressions. You can really see how much the car genuinely means to him and the way Jay completely understands, it just makes for a fantastic episode. Loved it. The car really comes alive with both of them in it.
Wonderful to see this pair having a blast. This and the 87 MK2 Golf 16v were superb cars. I have still never owned the Golf at 48 years old. They are rare in the UK now.
As a former 3x owner of Sciroccos from my early driving days (culminating in a 1988 16V in Tornado Red), all I can say is that this video meant a whole lot to me. Thanks for sharing the Scirocco passion with Jay in such a wonderful way, and I so love the fact that this is your all-time keeper car. Although I sold mine well over 20 years ago, the memories are forever, and it's the car I first took my wife and I on a date. As I always say within the context of 1980s era Volkswagens, there are Golf/GTI people and Scirocco people, but they often don't mix. I was always very proudly a Scirocco man!

Great to hear his enthusiasm for the Scirocco! I bought my Scirocco MK2 16V in 1998 and still today its amazing to hop in for a drive, never gets boring. 😍😍😍
@@FYMASMD You're joking right? The dude is one of the best automotive journalists of our time. His pieces are some of the best and most fun to watch out of anything out there.
As a German from Düsseldorf, I'm NOT amused about the Cologne number plate... - just kidding, old city rivalry. Jason presents himself as a great guy - humble, funny and well-informed! I love how he also mentions the German horsepower which is different. One reason was: In the early 80's we didn't have a catalytic converter. After Volkswagen integrated one in the mid Eighties, horsepower figure of the GTI 16V fell from 139 to 129. I had the pleasure to drive in one of the non-restricted versions, but it was a Golf, not a Scirocco. At that time, these were light and agile rocket ships on every road, especially the Autobahn. What's so good about these is that they are solid (except some rust), reliable (except the valves and timing belt) and practical with some space and cargo area. The leather seats were quite good and special. They had a version where the black leather front seats were produced by Recaro. My son still has them in his mid-90's VW Polo with just 75 hp but it runs like hell. Nice episode which brings back some memories.
Wish we had public roads in the u.s. where we could do a buck fifty. Germany's on my short list to visit one day. Not specifically for that. That's just one aspect.
Proud Scirocco owner here. Thank you for doing this. I totally understand why so many people never experienced these, especially the muscle car crowd. But when I bring my 1979 Scirocco to car shows it always gets a lot of comments and the stories start flowing. Even the people who never drove one knew somebody who had one. Fantastic cars.
This is all location though, in Europe these don't get any attention at all. If you bring a Chevrolet C20 anywhere tho you get people taking pictures and asking you about it, while it would be just another square body in the states. They are beautiful cars though! Glad to hear people still keep them in good condition and on the road.
@@sporkeh90in 1972, my dad was sent to Germany for work and he had his beloved 67 Impala shipped over there. In the world of Mercs, Porsches, BMWs, Audis, and tons of other European makes, EVERYBODY slowed down, stopped, gawked, asked questions, even took pictures. Turns out, after three months, it wasn’t working out, my dad got pissed, and quit. He sold his Impala to a German car. It for a huge profit and we went back home to Cali. Once back, he got a new job and bought a BMW E9, which got him a lot of looks and compliments here.
In college I had a Scirocco, and I absolutely loved it. Even though it was really just a tarted up Golf, it gave me many years of driving pleasure. And that opening shot of Jason giggling like a schoolboy was priceless! A fantastic video, and a great looking Scirocco that brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks for sharing!
Jason's been a recognizable name in the automotive journalism scene for a long time, but once he started making Hagerty videos with the wildest production value out there he's now must-watch with every single thing he makes for them
I had an '85 Scirocco Turbo. These were 8 valve 1.8 liter engines with a dealer installed turbo kit that was covered under the Volkswagen warranty. It made 6 psi, and had about 130 hp, but also 150 ft/lb of torque. Total bottle rocket and faster than the 16 valve cars. I had problems with the exhaust pipe since there was no flex coupling. I wish I still had it, it was VERY well built!
I put a try-y header and a stainless steel flex. 2-1/4 auto tech exhaust. My dad called it a pissed off weedeater with a five speed. Oh yeah, and I change the cam and sprocket. It was so fun .
@@dipren443 No, these were produced by a company called Jackman Racing and sold to Volkswagen. Non intercooled, IHI RHB5 air cooled turbo. This was covered under the warranty, VW never had any official connection to Callaway. Callaway provided kits to owners only.
My parents used to have a 1985 Wolfsburg edition, 8v… The fun I had just being a passenger and the engine sound on high load around 2-3k rpm… I can’t describe it and never heard anything alike…
German here. Jason has fantastic knowledge of these cars. One of my most beloved cars i had from 1992-2000... It was a Scirocco GTX-II. 112hp engine. Maybe it was the nostalgia of the youth, but i still miss this car. I even lost my photos of it somehow. Today they became so rare and expensive, that i can't afford one anymore. Back in the days, you got some for a box of beer or 500 marks for a nice one.
👍 Brit here, I had an 87 scirocco GTX Mk II 112hp - still the car I had most fun in… I was waiting for the exhaust rasp on the 2nd - 3rd upshift at the redline - 6300rpm as recall - but no I didn’t hear it… that’ll be the upgraded engine and exhaust but still great nostalgia - miss that car so much it only cost £1000 in 91 with 100k miles on it - unfortunately stolen and insurance write off😢 great memories
The 16V Scirroco was my favorite car in the 80s. I’ve always dreamt of getting one and now that I can afford one, they are so rare and impossible to find.
@@jonathanhowe2652 Interesting you say that, as I'm from Ireland and back in the early 90's my Uncle had a black GTX that also got stolen and was never seen again. But that car probably made the best noise I've ever heard from a 4cyl at full chat. They were awesome cars and great value on the 2nd hand market for a long time.
@@HendrickT-bi4iw that’s a shame but they were so easy to break into that when mine was recovered (joy riders) it literally had “see how easy it is” graffiti’d down the side… the worst part of that sorry tale is that I went from my favourite ever car to my least favourite ever car - a Ford Orion 😩
I had a Mk1 Golf GTi (1800) (Mars Red, OF COURSE! :) ). I loved that car and I wish I still had it. Not as stylish as the Sirocco (I suppose, but still a great look) but just as much fun. As Jason says, it would be doing around 4,000 rpm at 70 mph - not good on a long motorway journey, and that's what caused me to sell it. (Damn long-distance relationships!)
These were one of the greatest cars made! It was the first car I ever bought in the 80s and I LOVED that car! My little son used to call it "His bolts wagon" 😊😊
As someone who absolutely adores early water-cooled Volkswagens, this was a rare treat. They're often overlooked, and they don't get a lot of respect in automotive enthusiast circles, but they're just unpretentious, enjoyable cars that are a blast to drive. As the owner of a 1984 Jetta GLI with a 2.0 liter 16V, it was a joy to see Jason open Jay's eyes to the thrill of a 16V Scirocco. Well done!
I had an 8v 1985 Jetta back in high school and my friend fell in love with it, bought himself an 87 GLI 16v. My next car was an 1990 G60 Corrado, love the Mark 1/2 era.
I've owned many VWs. My favorite was an '85 Scirocco that my best friend and I passed back and forth whenever one of us owed the other one money. That car was part of my life.
This is what i love about Jason Camisa. He knows the nuances of the history behind vehicles. I love the details. Jay kinda slighted him when hes explaining the kink. Yes, Jay is a car guy and a gearhead but Jason is that, plus a knowledge and automotive history buff. He is a true automotive connoisseur.
@@htimsid perhaps using slighted was too harsh. Jay just dismissed Jason's extremely detailed explanation when he replies with "that was more information than I needed to know".
@@htimsidI think he was meaning Jay kinda blew off his historical background that Jason poured his heart into giving which let’s be honest he kinda did
Jay Leno has a long history of insecurity and isn’t known in the entertainment industry as a friendly mentor. Yeah, people take up for him because he has a nice car collection and the generosity to share it, but that doesn’t mean he’s the nicest guy.
Well I was never interested in a Scirocco...until I saw Jason´s passion for it. Great story!!! Jay is a legend and Jason is an icon - both bond over a Volkswagen...only in the car world. I get goosebumps.Thank you so much!!!!
@@basshead. It is for me because many personalities in the "automotive youtube" space take their job way too seriously, however Jason actually has fun with it. The closest people in spirit to Jason that I can think of is the "savagegeese" duo. All that aside, having Scotty on Jay's show would be based.
I owned a 16V for a decade, and it's really hard to explain to anyone who hasn't owned or at least driven one, but these cars have a certain soul that just makes for an incredible driving experience. Back in the '90s there was a large group of us who communicated via an internet mailing list (before the days of forums), which Jason was also a member of. Good times!
My 2 biggest regrets are selling my Scirocco 16V and my Corrado G60. And Jay, I was one of the guys that fully built that engine with a stand alone fuel system. Got about 225 hp out of it, but with that light weight it was a rocket!
Still have my 87 16v, bought it in 1998. Still my favorite car. Great to see that people with a huge experience in automobile appreciate this little car.
A close friend of mine owed a ‘76 Scirocco. He worked at NBC and drove it to work. His assigned parking spot was right next to Leno’s. Every time I watched the beginning of the show Jay would drive up and park his car right next to my friend’s Scirocco.
I bought a new 1988 red 16 valve Scirocco at Chaisson motor company in Las Vegas NV. I mean it had nice power and I really liked that car a lot and the guys right ...is probably one of the best cars ever for such a low price point. I had a 1978 that I bought used it was rusted though. Hidden underneath the undercoat. Silver with a black interior. I had it in college and everybody on campus and in town that had a scirocco, flashed their 'bright lights' as we passed -with the lights in the daytime- when the lights were off only; European cars did that.
I've got an 88 GTI 16V I bought in 88 while in the Navy. I drove all up and down the East Coast for duty and leave and Mr. Cammisa is spot on about the 4 grand at 70 mph. I love my GTI. Four different people have driven it since 88. Another reason Jason's my fave American car guy.
There are several design elements in this Scirocco that are similar to my 1982 Honda Accord hatchback, including the Hofmeister kink. I bought that Accord new, and still kick myself to this day that I ever sold it.
I used to drive Sirocco with one central wiper. "Silver bullet" was it's nick name. I loved it. Thank you both Jay and Jason for bringing back good memories.
Hey Jay, so sorry to hear of Mavis’ struggles with dementia. I truly wish you both the best as you both handle this challenging illness. It’s true that behind every great man stands a great woman. I’m sure that you will handle this with all the intelligence and grace you have exhibited throughout your career. ALL THE BEST, JAY !
Gorgeous car ! I remember that there was a Scirrocco Storm Edition when I was growing up in europe, but it was towards the later end of the production run. Always liked the Scirocco .
I had a 79' first gen Scirocco, and I loved that car, wish I still had it today. It was a blast to drive, it is the only car I have ever owned that when ever you met another Scirocco, we always waved to each other.
Yes I bought my '78 as a leftover in '79. Still had to pay full sticker but got the dealer to put on the set of competition anti-sway bars off of there race setup Scirocco. Added a Flex-Dam front spoiler. That car was so much fum - 4 wheel drifting in total control.
I also had a '79, and my brother had an '88 16v. As Jeremy Clarkson said about his MK1, that car didn't spark my love for cars, but it cemented it. Still my favorite car, though I haven't driven one in 30 years or so.
Jason is incredibly engaging to listen to, he speaks passionately and convincingly. Love his stuff on Hagerty. I'm also sympathetic being on my 9th or so VW (currently a Mk3 VR6, Mk5 R32 and a '69 Beetle). Jay reminds me of my dad, I'd regularly reappear from my bedroom as a kid and be allowed to stay up to watch Jay. What a great combo.
Two absolute masters of their automotive craft. These two have forgotten more about cars than I'll ever know! Such a great way to start my Monday! And, of all the cars these two could review, they chose Cammisa's OG Scirocco. I love it! Thank you to Jason for bringing out one of my teenage lust objects, and to Jay and the Crew for another great episode! Also, bring Jason back for more visits!✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦

I had this exact car. I drove it to school in 1986 / 1987. It was fast! Handled like it was on rails. Happy Jack Rd between Cheyenne and Laramie. The Old West meets Bavarian Mt roads. Epic. Loved that color as well. Only issue in DRY Wyoming I had 3 exhaust systems rust out. WTH?
Absolute perfection. Two of the greatest in one room, riffing effortlessly off of each other, sharing their passion and bonding over a common man's love of his first love. Enjoyed every fantastic second of this. Thank you.
I have had many Scirocco's and still own the first one I bought in 1999, a 1985 Wolfsburg example that has gone under extensive modifications and continues to evolve.
I imagine you're in touch with a bunch of Scirocco groups/people. Do you have any idea where I could find a Kamei X1 front and rear bumper lip? Even broken or damaged. I need them for my 83 Silver California edition.
My dad bought an 81S new in 1981. A few years later when I got my licence, I bought a 78. And then another. And then a friend bought a 79 and we drove it from Boston to San Francisco. He ended up buying an 80S when he found out the brake lines on the 79 would cost more to replace that to just buy another car. He sold it to me a couple years later for $300, and I drove it around California before driving it back to Boston. I finally gave it away because it needed a bunch of work and I didn''t have the time to work on it. I'd kill to have another one again. Best car ever.
Very nice car. I owned one of those but in black. I also enjoyed my 1984 GTI which was modified. So glad to see this beautiful vehicle still alive in someone's heart.
OH THE JOY! So stoked you got the Rocco on the show! Thank you! Made my day! I also have had mine for 26 years. Still my daily ripper! Such a fun car to drive! Back road slayer! Drive, break, fix, repeat! Getting difficult to find parts these days. It's a labor of love!
My scirocco was the last year they made a single windshield wiper blade. I could never beat my cousin in his Mustang unless it was in a corner. I loved that thing!
The funny part is the amount of bickering over the trade. I don't think Jason would take cash for his baby. He'd have to get one of Leno's prized possessions in return.
My first new car was a 1978 Scirocco "Sidewinder II". Traded in my 64 1/2 Mustang fastback which went straight into the nearest ditch every time it rained or snowed. The VW was a blast to drive but was a nightmare to maintain, you needed an automotive electrician on hand at all times. My current daily driver is a 2012 GTI, also a blast to drive and totally reliable. Thanks for the memories, Jay!!
Thank you for this video. I love these cars and have owned alot of them. I smile everytime i see one. They sure dont make em like that anymore. Long live the scirocco !
I remember seeing the GTI, GLI, and Scirocco with those red 16V badges and tear drop rims when I was in high school and used to think "WOW, I need that!"
I had a friend that was in the Navy in California from 1985 till the late 80’s and he had purchased a Scirocco, I don’t remember the year , he showed me a picture once. He was the typical Wild Navy guy got drunk and in a serious accident with it totaling it and being put in the Brig for this. He always talked about that car and how much he liked it and wanted another one. I never absorbed the specifics he mentioned cause I was all American muscle car only then . He always wanted another one cause he liked it so much, he would have loved to see this video, but regrettably he passed away early at 39 years old in 2006 and never got another one. Thanks for giving me an education on what I couldn’t appreciate on this car years ago and getting to actually see and hear one. 😊
My first car that I had was a 1988 Scirocco 16V, my dad said it was mine as long as I paid to fix and learn how to work on it, and drive it because it's manual. After about $10k, 2 motors, 3 transmissions, and various CIS-E problems I still have it, and it is my favorite car. It is the one that always makes me smile when I drive it, even if I know it's probably going to break again 🤣
Could not have been more enjoyable to watch. I laughed with Jason mentioned turbo charging - my dad had a '76 Scirocco that he autocrossed and it had a non-intercooled turbo kit that eventually caught fire and destroyed the car. He's still modifying cars at 82 years old.
Had a non--16v Scirroco, stick, that i loved way back in mid 80s. Drove it into a thru water across the road that was only a few inches deep.....turned out to be deeper and engine siezed and new-old replacement into the engine bay. Put a trailer hitch on it and pulled a u-haul from Michigan to Tucson....for school.....with no problems. Used to drive it up to Summer Haven at 8000 ft on Mt. Lemon late at night and then rocket down the two lane winding to the bottom. no guardrails. not entirely sure how i am still here to type this, but....here i am talking about my favorite car. I wish....I wish....I wish...I still had it.
Hey Jay, I want to say thank you for all you do. You’re pure class. I’m an old preacher of 50 years. I want you to know that I pray for you and Mavis and your health quite often. You deserve the best that God has to offer. Many folks forget and even famous folk need somebody that is concerned about their everyday life. Thank you, Buddy.
I love Jason Cammisa. He thinks about cars like I do. It's about time he came on this channel. He's my age. I remember when these Scirocco's were new. They always turned my head when ever I saw one. I've always been a big fan of anything Giorgetto Giugiaro designed. I also love the VW Corrado. I still hope to own one some day. Thank you.
My Dad, a WWII Battle of the Bulge vet, loved VW's ( Beetles) and had many prior to his 1985 Wolfsburg Edition Karmann Scirocco. An amazing car. I got the use of it for a few years before leaving the States for work. I still think about the fun driving it quite often and the sound while you were driving brought back the memories.
Agree, I drove my 1975 Scirocco from Boise to Portland on a road trip when it was new. What a gas of a time we had driving it. Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end...
Wow two automotive giants together… it’s almost like Jason is a 19 year old kid showing his pride and joy to grandpa. 😉 I enjoyed this one so much! Hope you do more videos together.
Got a 81 Scirocco S from an Army officer in 1993 at Ft Gordon, Georgia. Beautiful car drove it all the way to Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona pulling a Uhaul trailer! Best part is that the good Captain never removed his officer DOD sticker so I was saluted by the MP's whenever I came through the gate...I was an E-5 Sergeant at the time. Great memories of that car thank you for featuring this!
I had a Scirroco when I was 16 in 1991! My Dad was a mechanic, and he fixed it right for me! Suspension, exhaust, and ground effects. I got a lot of attention in high school with that thing.
The best episode ever! Jay and Jason are true car guys! Seeing Jason eyes light up while Jay was driving made me smile the whole time. Would have loved to spend time in the car with both these guys!

I have 2.0 16v too ! but its got a 1.8 t in it and doesn’t go to bad.

Jay seems to really like anyone thats into cars.
You can feel the respect and appreciation Jason has towards Jay. Kind of like the student showing off his child to his mentor. Wonderful segment.
Jason was an awesome guest on this episode, Good chemistry with Jay Leno. I was smiling the whole time watching, especially during the drive. I always liked the styling of that car, and nice to see an example that was tastefully and conservatively modified.
Exactly!
Ya, I love these kinds of JLG the most.
What was up with Leno’s comment at the end there about voices going high? Did he feel slighted by being “schooled?” Found it a little odd.
I have an 87 Scirocco 16v. In its day it punched way above its weight. My first new car was an 88 Scirocco 16V. Lots of fun.
These two are great together, their timing, the way they play off each other. I hope they have another episode in the future 😃
I think the 190 2.3-16 needs to be reviewed ;)

The exterior shots of that car going by are hard to match. What a great looking car.
My two favorite car guys, I wish this were a series. It would be epic.
Jason is a really charming guy. I love his Hagerty episodes.
This was great. My two favorite car personalities together one one show!
I love it when Jay showcases "common" cars. This was so enjoyable. We'll done Jay and Jason.
^and you're from? Hmm! "Common" just a word where you live+ ..I guess 😛
My first car was an 84 scirocco and I still miss that car (accident), but now I’m all into GTIs… some of us are BOTH.
Glad you enjoyed!
How about the Corrado?

Jason is giving Jay a history lesson. It is a great day in the car world .
This guy is pure gold, best guest on the show ever :) And the car is cool.
That car would make me smile too. Love those old Vdubs
I LOVE how passionate Jason is about the car. ""Please don't touch the car, sir" had me in stictches :D

I love it when Jay hits that perfect RPM whine and smiles and says "I like it!"
We need more episodes of Two Jays One Coupe! Honestly though these two have great chemistry and I could watch them all day.
Haha! I see what you did there.
Mk1 and Mk2 Sciroccos were foundational in my lust for sporting hatchbacks. Beautiful design.
I had a n 86 scirocco 16v exactly like that!! I miss it dearly. When Jason said ' it has a personality' is spot on!😊
I owned a new '87 Scirocco 16V. It is the only car I wish I still had, loved it!
Thanks for keeping it on the road Bro !
This is all location though, in Europe these don't get any attention at all. If you bring a Chevrolet C20 anywhere tho you get people taking pictures and asking you about it, while it would be just another square body in the states. They are beautiful cars though! Glad to hear people still keep them in good condition and on the road.
@@sporkeh90 Nice C20's attract a crowd here in the States now, too. 😄 They're starting to sell for a lot of money.
My friend Danny had one, and let me drive it now and then and it was awesome.
Callaway kit I assume?
Yup the calloway turbo kits
I put a try-y header and a stainless steel flex. 2-1/4 auto tech exhaust. My dad called it a pissed off weedeater with a five speed. Oh yeah, and I change the cam and sprocket.
It was so fun .
@@dipren443 No, these were produced by a company called Jackman Racing and sold to Volkswagen. Non intercooled, IHI RHB5 air cooled turbo. This was covered under the warranty, VW never had any official connection to Callaway. Callaway provided kits to owners only.
@@ibidu1 I once test-drove a cabriolet that had the Callaway turbo kit, but it wasn't for me. I would have driven a Scirocco to that test drive.
My parents used to have a 1985 Wolfsburg edition, 8v…
The fun I had just being a passenger and the engine sound on high load around 2-3k rpm… I can’t describe it and never heard anything alike…

A close friend of mine owed a ‘76 Scirocco. He worked at NBC and drove it to work. His assigned parking spot was right next to Leno’s. Every time I watched the beginning of the show Jay would drive up and park his car right next to my friend’s Scirocco.

My first HS car was a 76 carburetor scirocco. Had no power but looked cool.

I have to say, Jason's passion for the Scirocco is contagious. Love seeing the enthusiasm and the knowledge he brings to the table. Great video, Jay!
There are several design elements in this Scirocco that are similar to my 1982 Honda Accord hatchback, including the Hofmeister kink. I bought that Accord new, and still kick myself to this day that I ever sold it.

Jay is a comedian by trade and a car guy by nature. Jason - a car guy by trade and a comedian by nature. What a combo!
The funny part is the amount of bickering over the trade. I don't think Jason would take cash for his baby. He'd have to get one of Leno's prized possessions in return.
Very well said Sir.@@filipkonopacki1547
I'm not sure Jason's brain would survive A) damage to his baby and B) caused by Jay Leno
@@filipkonopacki1547 Well said mate.
So much "chemistry", you and Jason are like father and son. Perfect balance of the love of cars and comedy. Please more videos together.
One of the best collaborations I’ve seen. I love both of these guys for their passion.
We had an 85 when I was a kid. I loved that car. I still love Scirocco's and always will.
I share same sentimentality!! Trying to get back into one
Good old CIS something I don’t miss
Could not have been more enjoyable to watch. I laughed with Jason mentioned turbo charging - my dad had a '76 Scirocco that he autocrossed and it had a non-intercooled turbo kit that eventually caught fire and destroyed the car. He's still modifying cars at 82 years old.
And I bet if you ask him about that 76 Scirocco. It was the best driving car he ever had.
This car and the Alpha Romeo GTV 6 were my favorite affordable sports cars back in the eighties.
One of the best EP I've seen yet. Jason is a character you can't forget.
Check out his stuff with Hagerty. It's must-watch for me.
My first car was a Tornado Red 1987 VW Scirocco 16v. Miss that little car everyday.
Thank you.
Always a pleasure. Erudite, entertaining, humble, educational.
I'm not a car guy, but I'm always glad to watch these.
Thank you Jason for sharing your passion. I hope you get a chance to do more with Jay. You two are fun to watch together!
Amazing he was such a Volkswagen fan, given the Beetle’s history in the war. Beetles are wonderful classic cars though.
My friend had a Sirocco in 1987. It was a moon unit. Really cool car.
Every show that has Jason Cammisa is GREAT SHOW!!!
We need more of Jay and Jason! Always love both their passion for cars.
Oh man, I owned a Scirocco just like this in black, used, when I was in college '97-'98. It was old by then, but absolutely loved it.
Also thank you Jason!!!
Yes I had an 80 Scirocco and put a hitch on it and also pulled a small U-Haul trailer and it did fine
Absolute joy
