Drive thrus, I just go inside, two line highways, you are not passing a tractor trailer, unless you're in a long sweeping curve, or you trust your passengers judgment. Left turns can be annoying if there is a box truck or large vehicles across from you turning left as well. I just take my time and in never in a rush.
I'm restoring a first gen century. There's nothing else that looks like it or rides like it. Yes, it is a Toyota but anything will break given enough time. Do a little research and prepare to fix the known problems before you buy one. Consider the sticker price the cost of entry. Parts aren't that expensive but shipping costs can add up and take months to arrive stateside. Even then, throwing money at a problem isn't possible when the parts were discontinued a decade ago.
I've had my Century for 16 months now. It's been very reliable but gets more attention than I'd prefer at times. Build quality is the best though and makes any negatives worthwhile.

Kids stare and point at it, teens ask me to rev it and older people ask me what year it is. My coworkers absolutely freaked out when they first saw it. Crazy considering most car enthusiats consider it "just a C4".

And the world’s slowest car is finally speeding up in value!

Almost nobody notices it, but once or twice a month a true car person will get really excited about it. Those are fun conversations. But I can't imagine driving a Countach, for example. I couldn't take the gawking and the hassles from that many people.

The Figaro actually looks like a great weekend car! Something you can get around in on a nice Saturday to get some chores done, or to just drive. This is definitely on my mind now!

My favorite was when a guy ran into the road to stop traffic, setting up his telephoto camera to take a picture and next to me was a black Countach. When he had the leggy woman in her dress pose in front of my ‘67 as the Lambo sped off, my wife positively howled laughing.

$20k will get you a decent Non-ECV or REV HMMWV. Those designations will run up into the $30k range for a decent condition one... of course those are the ones you want.
I bought a 1983 Datsun 280zx for less than $5000 and it got LOADS of attention. I'm sure you could get a really nice turbo model for less than $20k. It was a lot of fun, but I eventually sold it for a 986 Boxster.
Around 10+ years ago, a guy was selling a gold, t-tops, z31 gen 300zx for $550, salvage, no title with a modern 3.5 vq engine swap and ugly large diameter wheels…. I regret not buying it. The exterior and interior looked like they were in good shape, but not sure what other issues it had, ‘cuz I’m pretty sure it had to have issues, maybe it was stolen, or total loss, etc. but I do regret not buying it… I could’ve used it just around the neighborhood, teach my son how to drive and other shenanigans.
Another car I'd suggest is the Chrysler Crossfire. They're super affordable and definitely gets heads turning, especially among non car people. They're not a super serious sports car but are actually pretty well made.
I've seen two JDM cars at my office. One late 90s Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and one mid 90s Toyota Hilux Surf. They don't stand out unless you take a good look at them and then realize that the steering wheel is on the wrong side. I like cars like that, they're if you know you know cars.
My uncle bought a HMMWV at Barrett-Jackson and after the first few DMVs denied it, he did attempt to force Barrett-Jackson to accept it back since the seller "guaranteed" it could be registered in all fifty states. In parallel, he continued trying other DMVs until he found one that would classify it as an "AMC truck" or something generic like that. But even after all of that, he already had a a custom truck he'd drive in the summer, which he decided he liked better, so ended up selling the HMMWV. I road in it for a few miles and it wasn't all that pleasant to be in -- and that is coming from someone who DD'ed a Wrangler for 10+ years. If you want something that is head-turner AND decent for road trips, this is certainly not it.
One thing to note one these, that Doug left out, is that unmodified there is no key. It is "turn switch to run and push button". If you have one, and folks know that, you have very little security as far as it still being where you parked. My uncle replaced that with a starter that used a key, but was designed to still look stock (key goes in a hidden location). Some folks go a similar, but simpler route, of just adding a hidden kill-switch.
The hummvees that are coming up for sale are mostly reserve unit vehicles, which is why the miles are so outrageously low. They were started up, and driven a little bit every few months, but never really saw any real use. The problems you deal with those, are problems you get with vehicles that've sat on an asphalt lot for 20-30 years with little maintenance.
I’ve seen a Nissan Figaro here in Utah. I saw it and thought, “That is cool and unusual.” As a car enthusiast, the weird, unusual, and underrated cars are more cool than mainstream cars.
Who ever buys some of these vehicles. They better know how to troubleshoot and fix them. Without wife wanting a divorce. Not just change the flat tire, oil and burnt light bulb.
I know an old lady who runs a dog sitting business who accepted a used arnage as payment for unlimited dog sitting for someone’s dogs. She’s 65, 4’11’’, sings at the local church, and donates 10% to local charities. I CANT WAIT to send her this video.
The Century is funny because it’s a Japanese domestic market car that exists to satisfy elite national pride but its name on the trunk lid is spelled in English🤦🏻
The 5th Gen Quattroporte/GranTurismo are hugely undervalued and bulletproof. I've been DD'ing my QP for 2 years now and have spent nothing on maintenance other than $200 oil changes. I beat the daylight out of it and yet it's been the most reliable car I have every owned.
Nice choices. I'd like to submit a couple more; some based on experience. -MR-2 Spyder will do the trick ($6-12k), but even the MKI and MK2 Toyota MR2s get plenty of attention and can be found for under $20k (and will probably appreciate too). -BMW Z3 Coupe (several nice examples under $20k). -1960s -1990s Alpha Romeo Spider / Fiat Spider / Triumph Spitfires / MGB Roadsters (many available in all conditions but $20k will get you the nicest example) -Aston Martin DB7 (okay it's not under $20k but if you REALLY want attention, $26k will get you into one). -Kei cars in general, but especially the Honda Acty (and other similar looking Japanese work trucks). $6-9k will get you into a decent one that's been imported already. -Cadillac XLR's can be found for under $20k (one is listed in good condition for $15k currently)
Being a us army soldier. The hmmmv aren’t exactly well taken care of even while in the military. My shop spent over 4 months trying to convince maintenance that we needed a new battery and that’s why the truck wouldn’t start
jeez car market has really gotten fucked up, 15k for a bare bone worn down military transport cant be justified i know someone who got an nsx for only 30k before the quarantine messed with the price of everything, he still drives it and it costs a dime to maintain compared to most of these
This 2 CV might still be faster than than most race cars on very rough trail or terrain between the potatoes. Suspension was special and it deserves all the attention.
When I was in high school, my best friend's dad owned Import Auto Service in New Orleans. He had a French & Italian car dealership, so I got to ride around in a wide variety of interesting cars. My favorite was a Citroen 2CV. The muffler looked like the same muffler on a 3.5 hp Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine. The seats could have doubled as beach chairs. The Citreon DS21s & SM were awesome. My favorite sedan was a 4 door Maseratti, maybe a Quadro. Lots of room in the backseat & just a really cool car to drive around.
Wearing two t-shirts allows you tuck the undershirt into your jeans. Way more comfortable. You don't want to tuck in the outer shirt since that'd make you look like a dork.
I actually test drove one when they were new. Two points stopped me from buying; incredibly slow, almost unsafe on highways and as I was leaving for the drive, one of the mechanics walked up to me and said quietly, "don't do it."
@@agrippa1234 I wouldn't argue with slow or unsafe on the highway- I keep it off highways. No idea why the mechanic would say that- Japanese simplicity and reliability. Its a joy to work on.
I got a z32 300zx and lots of people give the thumbs up, and come up to me to tell their story’s about having one in high school, or as their first car back in the day. I never expected this reaction from people when getting the car!
I drive a 1985 aw11 toyota mr2 (bright red). bought it for 8k and let me tell you in this, it gets so much attention even women like it and have aproached me to talk about the car.
the 2CV was nicknamed "umbrella on wheels" because of the tarp on the roof and the gear shift looking like an umbrella handle (the kind of quirk Doug loves)
If you want a car that will get attention on a budget I'd recommend the NA miata. I got one this year and I'm usually an introvert but I get a lot of ppl walking up asking what it is or telling me how tiny it is. Mines also has a cobalt exhaust so it's loud and ppl assume it's fast. I've even had ppl take pictures of the car whilst I was in it. It's also a fun car to drive.
I have a 73 Buick riviera and I haven’t had one bad comment about it, people love the car and it is a neck breaker. For 20k you can get a very nice riviera and get a ton of attention from old timers.
Of all my cars the cheapest one I have gets the most attention - and all positive attention… it’s my Porsche 928. Everyone waves and gives a thumbs up, everyone at the gas station wants to talk, everyone who’s had one wants to tell you a story… And funny enough, if you take it to a cars and coffee, the people who seem to care the least are Porsche guys who are obsessed with 911’s. But don’t worry, if those guys are talking to me and I get the sense they’re brushing it off because it’s not a 911, I tell them about the 911s and other Porsches I’ve had, and then blow their minds by telling them the 928 is still the best Porsche I’ve ever driven (relative to its era of course).
Attention & admiration are very different things. These cars may get attention, but they are just clown shows. Stop being cheap and get a 500K supercar.
You forgot to mention how easy the Humvee is to steal. Things don't even take keys to start. It's just a dial you turn. Anyone can just walk up and take it. Also, you'd need to replace the seats, they're uncomfortable as hell
You know what, these cars (aside from the really rare ones on the list) would attract the attention of my 16 year old self. In my 30s now and having had so many “at the end of their life cool cars”… a nice warranty and reliability attracts my attention. Just get a lightly used Civic Si or a GTI or a new Maverick for that money.
@@dan__stuff The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is. There are a few other boxy retro-styled cars, like the Mercedes G, Ford Bronco, upcoming Scout revival and Suzuki Jimny.
I used to drive an Mr2 Turbo here in the UK that got a lot of attention. Japanese import. A lot of 1992 imports had registrations ending in CEV There were loads of Figaro's around at the time, also ending in CEV. 1 near me was 1 single digit different to my plate 😂
2017+ Fiat 124 Spider. There weren't enough of them sold for most people to know what they are and they are regularly guessed as being some kind of expensive exotic.
Yup. The 2CV is the only one on the list that is actually cheap to run. All parts (including brand new frames) are readily available (more easily in Europe, admittedly, but you can always have things shipped, at least the smaller parts, like an entire engine), it needs fewer petrochemicals to drive for a year than your average hair metal band during a single stage performance and even someone who has never worked on a car can easily fix one of the five moving parts that might go wrong. You - yes, you, IT person who has never held as much as a spanner in yourlife - can take the entire thing apart with the toolkit that comes with it. Those huge fenders are attached with a single bolt each. And once you've gotten it back together, you'll realize that it rivals the luxury cars on this list in terms of how comfortable the suspension is. It might even surpass them. For all its cuteness, simple tech and efficient use of space and resources, it's first and foremost absolute marvel of automotive engineering. Just in case it's too cute and/or conventional for your tastes, there are some lesser known official and unofficial variants of it that should be mentioned. There's a panel van, the more upmarket and even weirder looking Ami 6 and Ami 8 (same suspension, but available with more powerful engines), the Méhari (essentially a French take on VW's Thing, but with a highly flammable plastic body) and then there are various fun kit cars using 2CV tech, chiefly among them the gorgeous Burton from the Netherlands, which looks like an early 1930s race car. The best thing about a 2CV though is that you can blow someone's mind by telling them it's a 1988 car, then get out and use a crank handle to start the engine - because they retained this ability until the end of production in 1990 (production models always came with electric starters as well though).
For a ultra cheap attention getter, I have been considering a midget 2cargo or maybe midget2 kei truck😂😂 probably nobody will have any clue about it and freak out when I show them the engine under theseat😂😂
Actual car that turns heads for little money. MG M!dget (no need to risk the filter, lol). Its so small, that even in european traffic it looks child-sized. It is a convertible. It has elegant sporty styling. And they are under 10 grand.
Panamera, hands down, gets the most attention for the least amount of money. Trust me, I own one. And every time I park it someone says “damn, nice car” and it was 181k brand new. I paid 31k.
These are the cars you get if you're a rich person who wants to roleplay as a poor person trying to roleplay as a rich person

My dad’s 1969 Corvette with the L88 option only cost him about $7,000. Now that I own it attracts a lots of attention. Good for me.
69 corvette is such a beautiful car! I’d love to own one before they start raising.
I have a '99 Rolls Royce Silver Seraph, which is the cousin to the Bentley Arnage. I get a lot of attention while driving it.
If you want something that runs drives and is fun for less than 20 grand!
MR2 Spyder!
i had got mine for 5k
@fortheloveofnoise I got mine for 3300 9 years ago. Still love it
I had one park next to my Lotus. He had put Lotus badges on it, cracked me up
@@scottyo64 😂😂 that’s hilarious but if it had a 2zz-fe that would be a great troll!
I’m surprised a Polaris slingshot isn’t on this list.
it is not a car
When they were new, maybe, nowadays, nobody cares. Most people have seen them enough not to even turn their head
I’ve seen a Nissan Figaro here in Utah. I saw it and thought, “That is cool and unusual.” As a car enthusiast, the weird, unusual, and underrated cars are more cool than mainstream cars.
I bought a 1997 Toyota Himedic for 16k last year. Lived and traveled all over the US in it and it breaks necks. V8 and 4x4 absolute unicorn 🦄 🚑
Japanese people love English because it's classy and sophisticated.
-1960s -1990s Alpha Romeo Spider / Fiat Spider / Triumph Spitfires / MGB Roadsters (many available in all conditions but $20k will get you the nicest example)
-Aston Martin DB7 (okay it's not under $20k but if you REALLY want attention, $26k will get you into one).
My shop spent over 4 months trying to convince maintenance that we needed a new battery and that’s why the truck wouldn’t start
jeez car market has really gotten fucked up, 15k for a bare bone worn down military transport cant be justified
i know someone who got an nsx for only 30k before the quarantine messed with the price of everything, he still drives it and it costs a dime to maintain compared to most of these
This was great entertainment. I like these videos. Thanks Doug
pretty much anything kei will attract attention.
That was the most echoey “This!” in the history of a Doug video.
Doug, please review a 'De Tomaso Pantera'
Agree, but only if its a Pantera GTS. Those things were rad.
Straight up, 2CV is the winner here. I never got over the horsepower of this thing...
7:25 It was designed in the 1930s, released in the 1940s and production stopped in 1990.
12:08 1967
2:48 whoa hang on a second there Doug... That's the correct side of the car
This 2 CV might still be faster than than most race cars on very rough trail or terrain between the potatoes. Suspension was special and it deserves all the attention.
Literally any Kei car. Tons of attention for very little money.
I’ve had a new Z06 and a 73 VW Thing. Guess which car gets the most attention. It’s hysterical
do you wear 2 t-shirts so you only have to wash the cheap one so the top one lasts forever?
Visible sweating stains
Wearing two t-shirts allows you tuck the undershirt into your jeans. Way more comfortable. You don't want to tuck in the outer shirt since that'd make you look like a dork.
Doug is the kinda guy to eat his pizza with a fork and knife
@@ProToolsApproved while flailing the other hand in order to talk

Suzuki Samurai - I know, I drive one every day. People lose their minds
Its a joy to work on.
doug turned into regular car reviews for the royce lmao
Other cars I’d consider are the Porsche 944, 928, and the Volvo S60R/V70R in a good color
@@CarEnthusiast722 as a huge Volvo fan the s60r and v70r are very much regular traffic.
I got a z32 300zx and lots of people give the thumbs up, and come up to me to tell their story’s about having one in high school, or as their first car back in the day. I never expected this reaction from people when getting the car!
Interesting quirk about the 2CV. The name (deux chevaux which directly means "2 horses") was based on how much horsepower the original engine made. 9.
Doug is the type of guy to rev a Tesla in a tunnel
SW20. A 20k second gen MR2 would be an absolutely pristine example and turn heads almost as much as the FD RX-7's and Supras.
Doug, how is my camo Hummer supposed to get attention if it's invisible? smh
I drive a 1985 aw11 toyota mr2 (bright red). bought it for 8k and let me tell you in this, it gets so much attention even women like it and have aproached me to talk about the car.
I came for the video...I stayed for stubble doug. Love the look Doug!
the 2CV was nicknamed "umbrella on wheels" because of the tarp on the roof and the gear shift looking like an umbrella handle (the kind of quirk Doug loves)
I remember seeing my first Figaro, and Demuro is right. I had to take a picture of it, just as I do for Ferrarri's, Aston Martin's and Corvettes.
I just want a Toyota MR2 SW20
With a Toyota V12 Century engine swap.
And a manual transmission. NOW THAT would turn heads and be so COOL!
I've owned my 04 Arnage T since 2020 and have loved every second of it. Definitely a good candidate for this list
How expensive has it been to keep running?
For under $20k, you can have a perfectly sorted, sub 100k mi. Mercedes R107 SL, and let me tell you from experience - people LOOOOVE them.
I have a 73 Buick riviera and I haven’t had one bad comment about it, people love the car and it is a neck breaker. For 20k you can get a very nice riviera and get a ton of attention from old timers.
Hey Doug, I’ve got a video idea for you:If you were starting a 5-car Turo fleet, what cars would you pick and why?
I don’t have that much money.
I will never stop loving the Toyota Century. Has to be the best comfort for dollar that's actually going to be reliable.
My e30 costed my something like 25k and it gets more attention than all the supercars here in zurich switzerland!
Exclusively from car guys though, I'd wager. The thing about cars on this list is that they get everyone interested in you or at least your car.
@@no1DdC even non car guys would turn to look at any car from the 80s as no new car is a boxy as they were then
@@dan__stuff The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is. There are a few other boxy retro-styled cars, like the Mercedes G, Ford Bronco, upcoming Scout revival and Suzuki Jimny.
@@no1DdC yeah, but they still looked very different (separate bumpers, round lights, smaller etc.)
another certified hood classic by doug
@dougdemuro. What about my lifted smart car? it turns more heads then any of my exotics lol
@LuckyLopez777 Only way to top that is a lifted Aston Martin Cygnet overland build.
Doug the type of Lamborghini owner, who talks about Lamborghini owners in third person...
I used to drive an Mr2 Turbo here in the UK that got a lot of attention.
Japanese import. A lot of 1992 imports had registrations ending in CEV
There were loads of Figaro's around at the time, also ending in CEV. 1 near me was 1 single digit different to my plate 😂
I am really waiting for When he makes a video for $10k.
HONDA ELEMENT- attracts attention everywhere you go
I don’t purchase cars to garner attention, I buy cars I want.
In my state it is legal to mount a weapon on your vehicle, making the humvee extra cool
2017+ Fiat 124 Spider. There weren't enough of them sold for most people to know what they are and they are regularly guessed as being some kind of expensive exotic.
Every one of these vehicles are on my bucket-list of cars to have at some point.
Thank you, Doug! I like this type of videos!
That Nissan reminded me of Columbo’s car…what ever that thing was
Any old Station Wagon with fake wood.
It is not fair to consider the price point only. It should also include the maintenance cost.
I don't think he made this list expecting anyone with only 20k to buy these.
Those $20k will turn into $40k in a heart beat 😂
For a ultra cheap attention getter, I have been considering a midget 2cargo or maybe midget2 kei truck😂😂 probably nobody will have any clue about it and freak out when I show them the engine under theseat😂😂
Actual car that turns heads for little money.
MG M!dget (no need to risk the filter, lol). Its so small, that even in european traffic it looks child-sized. It is a convertible. It has elegant sporty styling.
And they are under 10 grand.
What about one of Sport Kie cars. Like Honda S660 🫡🫡🫡🫡
What about a Mercedes W116?
The Century debuted way before the 80s, Doug.
5M subs and Doug will get a professional videographer and a sound director. Maybe
At least he doesn’t use a Yahoo email anymore.
Panamera, hands down, gets the most attention for the least amount of money. Trust me, I own one. And every time I park it someone says “damn, nice car” and it was 181k brand new. I paid 31k.
In Germany the 2CV is called "Ente" which means "duck". A very adequate name I think 😅
