"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
    - J. Krishnamurti

    • @kft
      @kft  3 ปีที่แล้ว +223

At the Krishnamurti Foundation archives we researched Krishnamurti's vast body of work and we are now fairly certain this isn't an authentic quote of his. The origin of this quote is probably a book written by Mark Vonnegut (Kurt Vonnegut's son) about his mental illness (The Eden Express: A Memoir of Insanity). The book was published in 1975 and attributes this phrase to Krishnamurti (spelled "Krishna Murti") without giving any sources. Vonnegut might have paraphrased or misquoted it, and it must have spread from there.
Aldous Huxely - a close friend of Krishnamurti's - also has a quote that is remarkably similar:
"The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does. They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.”

@@robertrobbmaciag3937 maybe, maybe not. But do they really have to be? I mean, society is run by people and their ideas. Sure, they are often just doing their jobs or "just following orders" and acting like society is some megastructure outside humans. Well, maybe sometime with advancement of AI we will see societies (infrastructure, laws, everything that can be externalized and run by machines) that are outside of human agency. But we are not there yet.
So, the question is: are we upholding societies we actually want to live in? Do we live with each other in such a way that we could say we live a life worth living? Or could we start living a more satisfactory lives?
These sorts of questions are now quite important, since the world is still at a sort of halt. And there's upheavals everywhere.
So, what sort of a humanity do we want to emerge from this time of crisis and change?

great last words to end the speech:
"Our difficulty is that we listen to a lot of things, we know a great deal, we have searched , asked, read, we have sought the advice of others, we have wandered the earth and find out, to find out what it’s all about, but we have never asked ourselves, we never demand ourselves serious deep questions. We always ask superficial questions and so we make our life very superficial. But if you asked questions, questions that demand answer from yourself so that you exercise your brain, your feelings , your whole attention is given to the question, the you being to discover for yourself without being told by anybody including the speaker. WHEN THERE IS FREEDOM FROM FEAR, YOU DON’T WANT GOD, YOU DON’T WANT ANYTHING FROM ANYBODY IN WORLD, THEN YOU ARE REALLY A FREE MAN."

This video gave me some understanding on how fear is formed. And started to practice mindfulness of fear.
When fear comes, I look into the physical sensation associated with it, generally in the belly, sometimes in the neck. And I generate only one clear thought. "fear". Every time I breath out inwardly I say "fear". And I observe as the physical sensation dissolves.
I don't care why I'm afraid, because that feeds it.
Fear is bound to be impermanent. But usually I used to ran away into looking for something that can calm me, or be lost in it, and then feed it with fear based though forms. Then it turns into paranoia.
The deeper you are in it, the more mindfulness it requires. But at any point in the process you can stop and be mindful and see it's impermanent nature.
Then you make it a habit. And fear helps you bring mindfulness into your life.

As I grew in life and experiences I realised that the answers given by others are utterly useless in real life. And one does not need to real many books by Krishnamurti or watch many videos. Half an hour of initiation should be followed by our own meditation. Once I can see and catch my mind in action of generating time and thought and fear... That's the end of it all....

It's amazing how in life most of us never bothered to stop and think. Just mindless repetition of work to survive like ants back and forth from food source to their hive. But great thinkers like him, deviates from the routine and take a step back to examine life in its entirety.

Of course time and thought is the root of fear, but thought and foresight might also protect you from actual future danger and that's exactly why it's so difficult to give up.

No. Your intuition will take care of future danger. Your subconcious already knows.

Kaikkk4947: If I have cancer and if I constantly think about dying then the sensations will create havoc in my body and living. But if I pay complete attention to the present without giving time and thought to death then there will be no sensations of fear and I can live a normal life giving my body a chance to heal with the help of medical treatment. Practising is more important than words. And as K mentioned when the self is not there time and thought are absent from every activity.

I ve heard memory and imagination as engendering fear - but this is much clearer : thinking and time. Then the attention to it . So you have a clear choice. It s a great way to go.

*To get rid of all suffering, it´s very simple: Get rid of ALL attachment. Attachment to material things, attachment to your dreams, projects, achievements, attachment to your family, attachment to your body... See, you came to this planet bringing nothing. Why do you want to carry anything when you die ? What you have here serves only here. Don´t be attached to what you´ve got. Be grateful for the life you got, the people you know, but don´t get attached. All this will have an end someday. You must die every moment to anything that do not belongs to you. And what belongs to you ? Nothing. Just have a life, a good, great life . When you perceive that, when you get this really inside of you, there will be no more fear, no more suffering, no more conflict. In order to get that perception, you need to watch yourself carefuly, have an extreme attention to what happens inside of you. When you have full attention, thought cannot play tricks on you anymore. And you become totally free.*
